The Sovereignty
POV: KAELITH
The harsh spotlight snaps on, cutting through the heavy darkness of the vast auditorium. The low roar of the student body barely registers the change. Hundreds of restless bodies shift in the velvet seats around me, their chaotic energy humming in the stale air. The scent of anxious sweat mixed with expensive colognes fills the space.
A middle-aged man strides to the center podium. His snow-white hair catches the bright glare of the overhead beams. He taps the microphone. The sharp thump echoes across the grand hall, yet the sea of voices does not fade.
"Good morning, everyone," the man says. His voice drones over the massive speakers, flat and uninspiring. "Please settle down."
Nobody really listens. The noise continues to buzz. He ignores the disrespect, pressing on with an impassive face.
"My name is Alaric-Wyvern, the headmaster of Astraea-Zenith-Academy. Today marks the start of another semester. To all the seniors, welcome back. To all the freshmen, welcome to your new reality." He grips the wooden edges of the podium. "You are the chosen few. We are honored to have you stand in these halls. You have been chosen not just for your intelligence, but for your raw, untamed potential."
Beside me in the back row, Tessara leans close. Her shoulder brushes mine. "This will take a while," she whispers over the lingering crowd noise. "Headmaster Wyvern is notorious for his drawn-out speeches."
I glance at her, raising an eyebrow. Before I can formulate a response, she pivots her focus, her expression turning sharp.
"How much do you actually know about the true nature of Astraea-Order?" she asks.
I shift uncomfortably in my seat. The leather squeaks under my weight. I stare blankly at the stage for a second. The truth is, I know next to nothing. My parents and my brothers guarded their secrets like hoarded gold. They locked me in the dark, treating me like an afterthought. They fed my brothers endless knowledge and power while leaving me scraps. My entire focus over the last few years had been set on one single goal: escaping my toxic family. I just wanted to survive. I wanted to prove my worth to the very people who spent my whole life underestimating me. I thought gaining admission to this elite school was a simple, straightforward ticket to freedom.
"I know it is the best school in the country," I murmur, feeling defensive. "That is about it."
Tessara clicks her tongue. She shoots me a pitying look, ruthlessly shattering my naive illusions. "So, you are walking in blind. You are in for a brutal ride, Kaelith."
I frown, my confusion deepening. "What do you mean?"
"Astraea-Zenith-Academy is not what it seems on the glossy surface," Tessara explains. Her voice drops into a dead-serious tone. "People think this is just a place to build your academic prestige, shed your weaknesses, and become an influential figure in the werewolf world. But they ignore the hidden process. Beneath the prestige, this school is a strictly divided battleground."
I lean closer, straining to hear her over Wyvern’s echoing drone about academy values.
"You know our country is split into four sovereign factions," she continues, gesturing vaguely toward the front. "The academy directly mirrors that structure. Four chosen leaders run this place. Choosing an Alpha to follow is a matter of life and death here."
My stomach tightens. A cold sweat breaks out on my neck. "A matter of life and death?"
"Yes. Most students stick to their native factions. For example, if you come from the Meridies, you usually follow the Meridies Alpha. But crossing lines to choose a stronger Alpha happens all the time. The catch? The Alpha must accept and respect you. You must brutally prove your worth to their clique." Her eyes lock onto mine, stripping away any room for doubt. "If you fail to align, you are treated as trash. You become a prime target for everyone. No protection. No peace."
The crushing weight of her words settles over me. The official introductions begin, snapping my attention back to the stage.
"The Alpha of the Orientis," Headmaster Wyvern announces. His voice booms through the hall, demanding attention. "Elian-Rhane!"
The right side of the auditorium erupts in deafening cheers. A tall, lean man steps out from the shadows of the stage wing. He wears black-rimmed glasses that match his dark hair. His lips press together in a tight, unyielding line. Even from the back row, I can feel a cold, calculated aura radiating from his stance.
Tessara acts as my whispering guide. "Elian-Rhane. The youngest son of the current Alpha of the Orientis. He is only a freshman, but his IQ is off the charts."
"Why is the youngest son the leader?" I ask.
"Because of his terrifying strategic brilliance," she replies without missing a beat. "He already ruthlessly dethroned his senior older brother to claim his rightful place as the heir. He doesn't play games."
I swallow hard, watching Elian take his spot under the lights.
"The Alpha of the Meridies," Wyvern calls out next. "Rovant-Marrowell!"
A familiar figure strolls into the spotlight. My brow furrows. I recognize that cocky posture anywhere. It is the arrogant guy I crossed paths with earlier today. The moment he steps forward, he flashes his signature, lazy wink at the crowd. The reaction is instantaneous. A massive wave of girls near the front rows erupts into a feral frenzy, screaming his name.
Tessara sighs deep in her chest. "Still playing the field, I see."
"You know him?" I ask.
"Everyone knows Rovant. He is the oldest son of the Meridies. He possesses immense, untouchable wealth. His family owns multiple monopolies. Right from day one, students line up to get on his good side just for a little spare change—money that could easily cover our rent at the dorms." She shakes her head. "He is also a notorious, insatiable player. Hundreds of girls line up to be in his bed back home. He doesn't even have to try."
I study him as he waves to his screaming fans. The designer clothes, the effortless smirk—it all screams excessive privilege.
"Alpha of the Occidentis," the announcer’s voice cuts through the noise. "Jaxen-Thrayne!"
My breath stalls in my throat. My fists clench on their own. My fingernails bite deep into my palms, leaving crescent-moon indents in the flesh. Just the sound of his name makes the blood roar in my ears.
Jaxen steps into the light. He waves to the cheering crowd. He looks blissful. He looks handsome. He looks oblivious to the agonizing chaos he left in my life just days ago.
Tessara leans in, ready to deliver his biography. "Jaxen-Thrayne. Treasured by his faction. He is known to be reliable, fiercely kind, and formidable on the battlefield in both human and wolf form..."
"Stop," I snap. My voice comes out tight and sharp. I cut her off before she can list another fake virtue.
Tessara blinks in surprise. "What? Are you from the Occidentis?"
"Yes," I say, forcing my hands to uncurl before I draw blood. "I already know exactly who he is."
I bite my tongue hard. The metallic taste of copper coats my mouth. I keep the dark secret locked behind my teeth. This so-called kind leader is a ruthless cheater. When the truth threatened his pristine reputation, his powerful family stepped in. They successfully framed me as a delusional seducer. They painted me as the villain to protect his golden boy image. The injustice burns like acid in my chest, but I stay silent.
I stare at Jaxen on the stage. Beside Elian and Rovant, his muscular build stands out. He is strong, yes. But his character is rotten to the core.
Before the headmaster can announce the final name, a tidal wave of excited, reverent whispers sweeps through the vast auditorium. The atmosphere shifts. The casual cheers die down, replaced by a thick, palpable tension. Students lean forward in their seats.
I glance around. The faces in the crowd hold pure awe.
"He is finally here," a girl in the row ahead of us murmurs, her voice shaking with excitement. "I saw him earlier. He is so handsome."
"The Alpha of the Septentrio," Tessara whispers. Her tone loses its casual edge. It shifts into pure reverence.
I look at her, waiting for the explanation.
"The Septentrio is the most superior faction," she explains. "They are the elite. Their numbers are unmatched, and their resources are abundant. The Alpha of the Septentrio is the ultimate bet."
I stare at the empty spot on the stage, the anticipation building in my own chest.
"If the other three Alphas have a notable merit, this Alpha possesses every single one of them combined," Tessara murmurs. "He has Elian's brains, Rovant's wealth, and Jaxen's strength. He is the most dangerous and popular choice among the student body. Everyone wants to be in his good graces."
The heavy double doors near the stage swing open. The announcer’s voice booms through the hall, louder than before.
"The Alpha of the Septentrio—Kaelen-Varkas!"
He steps into full view under the harsh stage lights. The crowd holds its collective breath.
A small, audible gasp escapes my lips. Shock anchors me to my seat.
I stare at the stage. My eyes trace his sharp jawline, his broad shoulders, and his effortless, commanding presence. I take in his dark brown hair, perfectly styled yet holding a wild edge. I look into his striking, stormy gray eyes as they scan the massive crowd.
My heart skips a brutal beat in my chest.
It is him. He is the exact same impossibly handsome man I had collided with at the entrance gates earlier today. The stranger whose touch had sent a jolt of electricity down my spine is not just some random student.
He is Kaelen-Varkas. The most powerful, untouchable Alpha in the entire academy.
