A Cell Without Sun

MADELINE

"Lock her up, and don't let her see the sun ever again. She doesn't deserve it!"

Donovan's voice cracked like a whip through the cold, fluorescent-lit precinct. He barked the ruthless command at the police officers without a shred of hesitation. His eyes were dead. The man I had married, the man who used to hold me with such care, now stared at me with pure, uncompromising hatred.

Before I could process the cruelty of his words, a rough set of hands grabbed my shoulders. The officer shoved me forward. I stumbled, my knees slamming and scraping against the concrete floor of a filthy holding cell. The sharp, foul stench of stale sweat and grime assaulted my nose, making my stomach churn. I scrambled to catch my balance, but the heavy iron bars were already swinging shut. The metallic clang echoed with a terrifying finality, sealing me inside.

I scrambled to my feet, my trembling fingers wrapping tightly around the rusted iron grating. Just a few feet away, on the other side of the bars, stood my husband and the woman who was supposed to be my lifelong best friend. Donovan and Valerie were pressed close together in the middle of the precinct. Their posture, the way she leaned into his solid frame, made them look much more like lovers than colleagues or friends.

The betrayal cut incredibly deep, slicing through my chest like a jagged blade. Valerie and I had grown up together. We shared everything. She was the person who had always had my back. Now, she was the sole reason my husband was throwing me into a cage for crimes I did not commit. The whiplash was unbearable. It felt like just hours ago, I was humming a soft tune in my kitchen, cooking his favorite dinner, foolishly hoping we could finally salvage our strained marriage. Now, I was a prisoner, staring out from a cage.

"Donovan, please!" I begged frantically, my voice cracking under the weight of my panic. I pressed my face against the cold metal, desperate to make him see reason. "Listen to me! Valerie is lying. I swear to you, I didn't push her! I didn't kill her baby, and I didn't steal a single thing from you! You know I could never do something like that!"

My desperate words bounced off a wall of solid ice. He had returned from the hospital with the police in tow, deaf to anything I had to say.

Realizing that Donovan was a lost cause, I shifted my tearful pleas to the snake I had so foolishly welcomed into my home. "Valerie, tell him the truth!" I cried out. "Why are you doing this? Why would you construct such a monstrous lie? I didn't even know you were pregnant! Please, just tell him!"

Instead of showing an ounce of remorse for destroying my life, Valerie choked out a pathetic sob. She mastered the role of the perfect, battered victim in a matter of seconds. Real tears pooled in her wide eyes and spilled down her pale cheeks.

"Madeline, how can you be so cruel?" Valerie cried out, her voice trembling with manufactured heartbreak. "I was your friend. I loved you. I kept your secrets when you started stealing from Donovan! I didn't tell him about the money! I covered for you, and this is how you repay me? By hurting my baby?"

I stopped breathing. Stealing? What was she talking about?

Then, in a moment of pure, calculated malice, Valerie shifted her weight. She turned her back slightly so Donovan could no longer see her face. Through her fake tears, she looked right at me and shot me a secret, wicked smirk. It was a vicious stretch of her glossy lips that screamed victory.

Before I could even react to the sheer evil of that smile, she twisted back around, burying her face against Donovan's chest. "I shouldn't have said anything," she whimpered, reverting instantly to her soft, victimized tone. "I'll leave. I'll go back abroad, Madeline. I forgive you for the push. But please... just come clean about the stolen money. If you tell him the truth, I'm sure Donovan will forgive you."

Donovan looked down at Valerie, and the rigid line of his jaw softened instantly. His eyes melted into a tender, loving gaze. That softness used to belong solely to me. Seeing him look at her like that—buying every single drop of her venomous lies without a single question—shattered whatever was left of my bleeding heart.

"Don't be sad, Valerie," Donovan murmured, his hand gently stroking her arm. Then, he turned his icy disdain back toward the cage. His gaze hardened into something ruthless. "You aren't the cruel one. You aren't the one who has been cheating, stealing, and plotting behind my back. You didn't take pills to avoid having my baby, and you didn't push a pregnant woman down the stairs."

Abortion pills? Cheating? The sheer magnitude of the lies suffocated me.

Donovan stepped closer to the bars, fixing his uncompromising gaze on me. He delivered a terrifying vow that echoed in the stifling room.

"I promise you, Madeline," he stated, his voice a low, lethal venom. "You will pay for everything. For as long as I live, you will never know peace."

The temperature in the precinct seemed to plummet. Harsh, cold shivers raced down my spine. The horrifying clarity of the moment settled heavily on my chest. He meant every single hateful word. I could not stop the hot tears tracking silently down my face as the man I loved transformed into my ultimate tormentor.
