The Unexpected Defiance
Harrison
I watch that polite, tight smile stretch across her face, failing to hide the lingering panic in her eyes. She has no idea what she is actually asking for when she tells me to share the details. I lean back against the arm of her sofa, crossing my arms over my chest, letting the silence stretch just long enough to watch the erratic pulse beating at the base of her throat. She thinks this is going to be some simple, quiet affair in a local banquet hall.
"Four hundred elite guests," I state plainly, my voice calm, dropping the massive, intimidating details like a physical weight into the room. "And that is just the preliminary count for the reception. There will be extensive and aggressive heavy media coverage surrounding the entire venue. Paparazzi, society reporters, the works."
I watch the blood instantly drain from her cheeks. Her lips part in shock, but I do not give her a chance to interrupt.
"It isn't happening at some run-of-the-mill hotel," I continue, meticulously explaining the high stakes. "I booked an incredibly exclusive California resort. The sprawling property is completely locked down for the weekend. No public access. No uninvited press. It is a fortress."
"Why... why is it so massive?" she finally manages to ask, her voice brittle.
"My cousin is the groom. He is a prominent billionaire tech mogul, sitting comfortably in the top five wealthiest under-thirty individuals in the whole of the United States. His bride-to-be is currently one of the most stunning, highly sought-after supermodels in the world." I let out a dry, dismissive breath. "Personally, I think the kid is a blind idiot for getting married at twenty-three. But who am I to judge his choices? He is in love, and the spectacle is unavoidable. It is a massive deal, Tessa."
Unable to process the sheer scale of the event, the polite facade shatters. Tessa jumps up frantically from the cushions. She begins pacing the length of her living room in pure distress, her arms wrapping protectively around her torso.
"No, I can't," she pleads anxiously, shaking her head as she wears a path into her rug. "It is too much pressure. I can't handle four hundred high-society guests and media. You need to find someone else."
I remain entirely unbothered by her panic. I track her frantic movements, my expression hardening into absolute firmness.
"You have already agreed," I state, my tone leaving zero room for negotiation. "You aren't backing out on me now."
She halts her pacing and whirls around to face me. The fear in her eyes instantly ignites into a fiery, combative anger.
"Yes, because you threaten my damn job!" she snaps furiously, her voice echoing sharply off the apartment walls.
I offer a casual, arrogant shrug, unfazed by her outburst. "You could have simply quit your position. The door was always open."
That stops her dead in her tracks. She plants her hands aggressively on her hips, her chest heaving, and glares daggers at me. If looks could draw blood, I would be bleeding out on her floor.
"We all don’t have the luxury of being billionaires, Harrison," she spits, the raw venom in her tone unmistakable.
Irritated by her tone, I push off the sofa. I smoothly close the physical distance between us in two long strides, stepping directly into her personal space. I stop mere inches away, using my height and broad frame to assert my dominance. I look down into her defiant, glaring eyes.
"You are acting like a brat," I growl lowly, letting the dark, warning timbre of my voice wash over her.
She does not flinch or cower. Without an ounce of fear, she tilts her chin up and yells right back in my face. "A brat? Really? I think I am being reasonable, considering you are the one blackmailing me into this twisted arrangement!"
I suppress a heavy, internal groan. My gaze drops to her parted, flushed lips, and a vicious, primal urge rips straight through my chest. God, I would desperately love to fuck that damn attitude right out of her. I want to throw her down and take her hard until she forgets every defiant word she just spoke. I know exactly how to handle brats like her. I know how to break them down, discipline them, and put them right in their place beneath me. But I ruthlessly force the thought away. She isn't mine to discipline. I don't want her as mine, either.
I need to defuse this escalating situation before I cross a line.
"You are acting like I am asking you to do something terrible," I say, keeping my volatile temper strictly in check. "You are getting a free, highly luxurious spa weekend out of this deal. You get incredible food, expensive wine, and a stunning suite without spending a single penny. In return, all you have to do is smile and pretend to actually like me. Plenty of women would be grateful for the opportunity."
She scoffs, her sarcasm razor-sharp as she shoots back, "Yes, pretending to like you is going to be the hardest part."
The curt reply hits my ego. I take a slow, measured breath. "Trust me, you could spend the weekend with someone worse. Just make it seem like you like me."
Refusing to entertain me for another second, she waves a brazen, dismissive hand in my direction. "Whatever. Is that all? If so, you can go now. I have personal plans for the night, and you are intruding."
My heavy fists physically clench at my sides. The audacity of her dismissal strikes a dangerous nerve. "You can't talk to me like that," I hiss dangerously, the underlying threat clear in my pitch.
Instead of backing down, she stands incredibly tall. She speaks with a stern, awe-inspiring confidence that catches me completely off guard.
"I can talk to you how I like. You are in my home. I am not at work. You are interrupting my personal time, Harrison. You can boss me around at work, but not here. Now, leave."
Her absolute, unrelenting defiance paralyzes me for a fraction of a second. I am utterly mesmerized by the fire blazing in her eyes. Unable to resist the sudden, magnetic pull, I reach out slowly. I lift my hand and tenderly caress the soft skin of her face with the rough pad of my thumb.
I watch closely as she audibly gulps. The combative anger in her expression fractures into a sudden display of vulnerability. Her cheek instantly flushes a deep, vibrant red under my unexpected physical touch. The heat radiating from her skin seeps directly into my blood, fueling the predatory tension stretching between us.
I purposely step forward, shifting my weight to press my hard, muscular body flush against hers. I want her to feel the undeniable physical advantage I hold over her, the solid wall of my chest trapping her in place.
"If I really wanted to, kitten, I could boss you around in more places than at work," I rasp deeply, letting my breath ghost over her heated skin.
She trembles against my chest, whimpering softly. "W-w-what does that even mean?" she stammers, her previous bravado melting into wide-eyed confusion.
I throw my head back and laugh loudly, savoring the absolute power trip. "Oh, wouldn’t you like to know."
I stare down at her flushed face. I internally acknowledge I could easily have her on her knees begging for me right now. I know the exact depraved things I could make her do. I am genuinely surprised by these sudden, intense dominant thoughts violently invading my mind. I have never seen this fiery, combative side of her before today. Her unyielding pushback, her refusal to simply bow down—it is actively turning me on.
I am tempted to close the remaining fraction of an inch between us, forcefully kiss her, and mold her into pliant putty right there in my hands. If I laid my mouth on hers, she would surrender.
But I purposefully pull away instead, letting a dark, satisfied smirk curve my lips.
"I will see you in the morning, Tessa. Don’t be late," I command.
I leave her standing in the middle of her living room, completely bewildered and speechless, and walk confidently out the door.
I step out into the cool night air and slide into the driver's seat of my luxury car. As the powerful engine roars to life, I realize a profound shift has just occurred within me. I am no longer dreading this tedious family weekend. In fact, a rush of anticipation thrums through my veins.
I can have some genuine fun with this fake relationship. I can torture her for kicks, treating the entire charade as rightful payback for her having the nerve to argue with me. It is a perfect game. It will successfully keep my nosy family off my back about settling down. If it were up to them, I would already be married with a family. But I am in absolutely no rush. I don't even know if marriage is something I genuinely want. I firmly believe it would take a very special, profoundly accepting woman to ever convince me to marry. She would have to accept every dark, controlling facet of my life, without question.
I drive directly home, my mind already pivoting back to my empire. I don't have personal plans tonight, but I need to dive straight into work. Being an absolute control freak means I refuse to leave for the weekend without having every single detail perfectly caught up. The mere thought of leaving loose ends stresses me out immensely. Everything has to be handled meticulously and on my terms.
I walk into my home office, shedding my jacket, and boot up my monitors. I anticipate being up until the silly, early hours of the morning, pouring over reports and contracts. I rarely sleep well anyway; my brain refuses to shut down, constantly analyzing and strategizing. A few hours of rest is all I ever need to function at full capacity.
Tomorrow is going to be an exhaustingly long day. I have to manage the operational fallout of my upcoming absence at the office, and then I have to drag Tessa dress shopping. My intuition tells me she isn’t going to make life easy for me tomorrow. She will likely fight me on every garment, but I welcome the challenge. I remain confidently certain that once we finally arrive at the luxury resort and she sees the sheer opulence of the event, she will inevitably forgive and forget, falling perfectly into line exactly as I expect.
