Wolves Among Giants
My muscles seized, locking up in a brutal, uncontrollable spasm from the searing shock. It felt as though my body had been plunged headfirst into a vat of boiling water, my blood singing with a chaotic, burning current. Jagged spikes of heat misfired through my nerves, leaving my skin raw, tingling, and hypersensitive. Before I could even attempt to catch my breath or figure out what had just flattened me against the concrete stairs, thick, calloused hands clamped down on my arms.
I was hauled to my feet with a terrifying, effortless force. The sudden movement made my vision swim. My nails instinctively dug into the solid flesh supporting me, desperate to anchor myself against the dizzying spin of the world.
A low, rumbling chuckle vibrated against my hands. Strangely, the sound drew the heat out of my veins, cooling the residual electricity dancing across my skin. I blinked through the lingering haze of pain and looked up.
The man holding me was breathtaking, built like a towering god forged for war. He had immense, broad shoulders that stretched the fabric of his shirt to its absolute limit, rippling with dense, tanned muscle. His striking gold eyes locked onto mine, shining with the piercing, unearthly intensity of a full moon. A jagged scar carved through his upper lip, curving upward toward his sharp cheekbone, adding a rugged edge to his perfect features. His dark, messy black hair fell casually across his forehead. He smirked, revealing a deep dimple that only enhanced his imposing presence.
"Hello, darling," he murmured. His voice dripped with the same posh, aristocratic accent I had grown to despise—the exact same inflection used by everyone in Queen Cordelia's suffocating castle.
"Pardon me," he continued smoothly. "You seemed to have gotten in the way of my morning run."
My disorientation morphed into a sudden flare of defensive anger. I scoffed loudly, planting my hands against his rock-solid chest and shoving hard to put some much-needed space between us. He let me go easily, watching me with a mix of curiosity and amusement.
"Do you usually run with your dog?" I yelled, my heart still hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "He barreled into me at full speed!"
He chuckled again. Amusement danced openly in those piercing gold eyes. "That was me, darling."
My stomach bottomed out. The horrifying realization hit me like a second physical blow. I was standing in the middle of an elite werewolf academy. There were no mere dogs running around the grounds. The students were the wolves. I had just called this towering, muscular powerhouse of a man a dog.
Heat rushed to my cheeks, burning away the last of the electric chill. I awkwardly rubbed the back of my neck, suddenly hyper-aware of how deeply out of place I was here.
"Sorry," I muttered, swallowing the thick lump forming in my throat. "It was just so small. I thought it was a dog."
The amusement vanished from his face in a heartbeat. His eyes darkened instantly, shifting into something predatory and dangerous. The teasing, flirtatious smirk twisted into a hard, threatening line.
"Trust me, love," he warned, his voice dropping into a lethal, bone-rattling register that sent a shiver down my spine. "Nothing about me is small."
I opened my mouth, my jaw working as I tried to process the blatant innuendo, but his demeanor shifted yet again before I could speak. He leaned in close, his nose flaring as he sniffed the air between us. The flirtatious edge evaporated into thin air. Cold, unyielding authority took its place.
"You must be new," he stated, his tone devoid of any previous warmth. "Did you not have an Alpha in your pack?"
Pack? The word confused me. I had lived my entire life in the human world, bounced around the foster system until Cordelia dragged me into her royal mess. I gave a silent, tight shake of my head.
He hummed, a dismissive, judgmental sound. "Makes sense. Just know that the Alphas around here are massive. They are two to three times the size of a normal wolf. Everyone around here could barrel you over without a second thought."
"Thanks for the advice," I mumbled, dropping my gaze and rubbing my neck again to hide my mounting unease.
He stepped closer. So close I could feel the radiating heat of his body and the soft brush of his breath against my skin. His voice dropped to a harsh whisper. "I didn't know that they let humans into the school."
My breath hitched. I froze. He had caught me. But the accusation stung, triggering my defensive instincts.
"I'm not a human," I snapped back, lifting my chin to glare right back at him.
His golden eyes swept over me with pure contempt. He hummed again, rejecting my claim. "Your smell says otherwise." He took a deliberate step back, his aristocratic charm replaced by raw, primal aggression. "Stay out of my way, human."
He spat the word like a slur. My shock morphed into a fiery indignation. I refused to let some arrogant jerk walk all over me on my very first day in this new hell. I squared my shoulders, planting my feet firmly on the pavement.
"An apology would be nice," I demanded firmly, refusing to back down.
He stopped dead in his tracks. Slowly, he turned back around, his glowing gold eyes pinning me in place with furious intensity. The sheer dominance rolling off him was terrifying.
"The weak," he snarled, the sound vibrating with deep, chest-rattling anger, "don't belong at Alpha Academy."
I stood frozen, jaw slack, unable to formulate a response. Right before my eyes, the gorgeous man shifted. Bone cracked and reformed in the blink of an eye, and the massive black wolf that had knocked me down stood in his place. With a powerful leap, he sprinted away across the manicured lawn, leaving me alone with my racing thoughts.
I shook off his chilling words and the lingering static buzzing in my veins. My hands trembled as I gathered my scattered bags from the concrete. I hoisted them onto my shoulders and marched straight through the heavy wooden doors of the Admissions Hall.
The stern Director sat behind a polished mahogany desk. She handed me a crisp academic schedule, a stack of course books, and a heavy brass dorm key. Throughout the brief interaction, her eyes darted toward my fiery red hair. She lingered on my hazel eyes, clearly searching for the signature Alpha gold and finding nothing. She didn't ask any questions, but her silent judgment and unspoken questions about my presence here spoke volumes.
I shoved the schedule into my pocket and headed back outside. The walk across the sprawling campus put me on high alert. Every shadow, every rustle of leaves had my eyes darting around, expecting another giant wolf to blindside me. I made it to my assigned dormitory without further incident.
I pushed the ornate brass key into the lock and twisted. The heavy, old wooden door creaked open, revealing my new living quarters. I stopped dead in the doorway.
The room was split straight down the middle. My side featured bare, dark wooden furniture and an empty mattress. The other side was a blinding explosion of frilly pink decor. Pink rugs, pink bedsheets, a pink cushion on the desk chair. It looked as though a bubblegum factory had vomited all over the corner. My roommate was nowhere to be seen.
"Might as well get comfortable," I muttered under my breath to the empty room.
I dragged my heavy luggage inside and let the door click shut behind me. Exhaustion weighed heavily on my bones as I unzipped the first suitcase. This bag held the meager, pathetic comforts of my old, neglected life. I pulled out a few worn-out graphic t-shirts I had owned since middle school, a couple of pairs of faded denim jeans, and finally, my beloved, frayed quilt. My very first foster mother had stitched it together from seventy different pieces of scrap fabric. It was old, uneven, and coming apart at the edges, but it smelled like safety. It felt like home. I carefully spread the bottom sheets over the bare mattress, then draped the heavy patchwork quilt over the top, smoothing out the wrinkles.
I turned to the second suitcase. This one felt like an anchor tying me to a life I never asked for. It held the extravagant, high-end royal attire Queen Cordelia had forced upon me over the past six months. Resting right on top of the suffocating silk dresses and tailored blouses was a piece of crisp, folded parchment. I recognized Cordelia's looping, elegant handwriting immediately.
I gingerly unfolded the note.
'Rhea,
Good luck at Alpha Academy. I know we didn't have much time together, but I do want to state how truly proud of you I am. You have grown into a beautiful, independent woman. It is everything I could've wished for you.
With love,
Queen Cordelia.'
A harsh scoff echoed in the quiet room. I stared at the hypocritical words, my chest tightening with resentment. I grabbed the expensive clothes by the handful, the rich fabrics feeling like poison against my skin, and shoved them deep into the dark closet on my side of the room. Then, I crumpled the pristine note and chucked it into a random desk drawer.
"With love, my ass," I hissed to the empty room.
The sheer exhaustion of the travel, the brutal collision, and the emotional whiplash finally crashed down on me. I didn't bother changing. I collapsed face-first onto the mattress, burying my face in the frayed quilt, and slipped into a deep, dreamless sleep.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the window, pulling me from my slumber. I sat up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. A quick glance across the room confirmed my roommate's bed was still empty. I sighed. So much for getting any sort of help navigating the campus on my first day.
I pulled on some comfortable clothes and left the quiet sanctuary of my dorm room for the massive, open campus. My anxiety spiked the moment I stepped outside. I consulted the map the Director had given me, navigating the winding paths toward my very first class: Wolf Basics.
I expected a traditional lecture hall. A quiet room with desks, whiteboards, and maybe some thick textbooks detailing werewolf history where I could just sit in the back and take notes. Instead, the map led me straight to the imposing double doors of a state-of-the-art gymnasium.
Around me, students were casually shaking out of their massive wolf forms. Fur melted into skin, revealing towering, muscular bodies, shiny tan skin, and glowing golden eyes. The sheer size of them made me feel incredibly small, like a fragile ant walking among towering giants.
A tall, intimidating woman with long dark hair bumped her shoulder hard against mine as she walked past.
"First day?" she drawled, looking down her nose at me.
"Yeah, actually," I replied, trying to sound friendly.
"Good luck," she sneered, her voice dripping with thick sarcasm before she shoved past me and pushed her way into the locker room.
I swallowed the rising panic in my throat and followed her inside sheepishly. A bored-looking coach handed me a set of standard-issue gym clothes. I quickly changed into the shorts and t-shirt, tied my fiery red hair up as best as I could, and stepped out onto the main floor of the training facility.
The room was massive. The high ceilings echoed endlessly with the aggressive sounds of grunting wolves and clanking metal plates. The perimeter was heavily equipped with at least twenty battered sparring dummies, their padded surfaces marked by brutal claw strikes. A massive weightlifting section dominated the center of the floor, surrounded by a pristine red indoor running track that looked to be about a half-mile around. I took a deep breath, feeling a tiny sliver of relief slice through my anxiety. I had run track in high school as an escape. Even though I hadn't trained properly since discovering I was a wolf, I was confident I could still bang out a mile in a killer six minutes.
I scanned the chaotic, testosterone-filled room, trying to find a quiet spot to stretch. My gaze drifted toward the heavy weights. A student drenched in sweat was straining hard on the heavy bench press, trying to push out one last rep. Standing over him, effortlessly spotting the massive weight, was a man with a very familiar set of broad, tanned shoulders.
The spotter grabbed the bar with terrifying ease, racking the heavy weight like it weighed absolutely nothing. He turned around to face the room.
I lost my breath. A loud gasp escaped my lips.
It was the exact same arrogant, black-haired man from yesterday. His casual smile vanished the split second his golden eyes locked onto my face. The irises beamed with sudden, piercing intensity. His expression soured instantly, twisting into a mask of pure disgust.
"You," he snarled.
