The Pale Gold Gown

"I think this tie suits you best."

Camilla ran her fingers over the smooth silk, meticulously picking out a deep charcoal tie from Roman’s extensive collection. The massive walk-in closet smelled of aged cedar and his signature crisp cologne. She focused heavily on the texture of the fabric, pushing aside the painful reality hanging heavy in the master bedroom. Her husband merely tolerated her presence. It was a fact etched into the cold, silent walls of this estate. Every day felt like walking on a tightrope, balancing between a wife in name and a stranger in reality. Yet, she was determined to play her role as a dutiful wife with quiet grace. They had a thirty-day agreement in place. Until that inevitable end arrived, she would maintain this fragile illusion and pack away her own bruised heart.

She walked back into the main bedroom and carefully laid his custom-tailored suit out on the pristine sheets of the king-sized bed. The crisp white shirt, the dark jacket, the perfectly chosen tie—arranged to meticulous perfection.

Roman stood near the mahogany wardrobe, buttoning his silver cuffs. He watched her movements through the reflection in the vanity mirror. He did not bother to turn around to face her. He did not make eye contact when he finally spoke.

"You are being foolish," he muttered, his voice a low, dismissive rumble that vibrated through the quiet room. "You are wasting your time on something pointless."

The sting of his harsh words hit her chest, but Camilla remained unfazed by his cruel dismissal. She reached out and smoothed an invisible wrinkle from the suit jacket, focusing on the simple task to ground herself. Turning to face his broad back, she offered a small, patient smile. It was the same mask she had practiced countless times—soft, unbreaking, asking for nothing.

"Maybe I am," she said softly, her tone lacking any trace of bitterness or anger. "But just hold on, Roman. Endure it for just this last month."

Roman shifted his stance, his jaw tightening slightly. Before he could formulate a response to her unwavering patience, the fragile peace in the household was abruptly shattered.

"Roman, darling! Are you up yet?"

The shrill, enthusiastic voice echoed all the way from the downstairs foyer. It sliced through the morning calm like a jagged blade. Camilla stiffened, her hand dropping from the suit jacket. She knew that voice all too well. Valerie Monroe and Margo Ashford had arrived at the estate early.

Roman grabbed his blazer, slipping his arms into the sleeves with practiced ease, and strode out of the bedroom without a backward glance. Camilla took a deep, steadying breath, steeling her nerves for the inevitable clash, and followed him out to the upper hallway.

Looking down the sweeping grand staircase, Camilla saw them. Margo Ashford stood at the base of the stairs, looking regal and imposing, her sharp eyes scanning the house as if inspecting for dirt.

Upon seeing Camilla standing quietly on the upper landing, Margo immediately curled her lips into a vicious sneer. Her voice carried loudly across the open space, designed to inflict maximum humiliation.

"Good Lord, you are still here?" Margo mocked loudly, her eyes sweeping over Camilla with pure disdain. "I would have thought the sheer embarrassment of lingering in a house where you are clearly unwanted would have driven you out by now. Have you no shame?"

Valerie stood nearby, confidently folding her arms across her chest. She scoffed, tilting her head with a look of mock pity. "It really is something, isn't it, Margo? The shamelessness required to just hover around like a ghost where you are unwanted. I could never imagine lacking that much self-respect."

Roman quickly descended the stairs, his heavy footsteps drawing their attention and cutting the ensuing dramatic confrontation short before Margo could launch another insult. "What is going on down here?"

Valerie’s mocking expression vanished instantly. She stepped right up to him, a sweet, pouty smile taking over her face. She reached out, her manicured fingers boldly stroking the lapel of his jacket.

"Oh, sweetheart," Valerie purred sweetly, batting her eyelashes in a practiced display of affection. "I have that huge fitting today. Please, could you drive me to my modeling studio? I cannot bear the thought of taking a cab."

"Fine. Let's go," Roman replied instantly. He complied without hesitation, adjusting his watch and preparing to leave.

Camilla descended the steps slowly, stopping near the bottom rail. She watched them. The familiar, burning sting flared in her chest as they shamelessly flaunted their mutual affection right in front of her. Valerie linked her arm tightly through Roman’s, pressing her body against his side. It was a clear, undeniable claim on the man who was legally Camilla's husband.

Despite the crushing weight in her heart, Camilla maintained her composure. She folded her hands neatly in front of her.

"Drive safe, Roman," she wished him softly.

Her gentle, sincere eyes caught the morning light. Roman physically paused for a split second. His hand halted on the brass doorknob. He looked back at her, momentarily caught off guard by her lack of malice. There was no screaming, no jealousy, no demand for her rights—only a quiet, steadfast resignation.

For a heartbeat, Roman seemed frozen by that look. Then, Valerie impatiently tugged his arm.

"Come on, darling, the traffic is going to be dreadful," Valerie insisted, pulling him out the door.

Roman broke the gaze and stepped outside into the morning air. The very second the heavy mahogany front door clicked shut behind them, the atmosphere in the hallway turned violent.

*Smack!*

A harsh slap forcefully struck Camilla’s cheek. The brutal impact snapped her head to the side. Her ear rang with a high-pitched whine, and the soft skin of her face erupted in a fiery, agonizing burn.

Margo stood towering over her, her chest heaving, her eyes wide with unhinged fury. The older woman’s hand was still raised in the air, trembling with sheer malice.

"Know your place, you wretched girl!" Margo screamed, her voice bouncing off the marble floors. She stepped forward, jabbing a sharp, manicured finger violently into Camilla's face. "You are a disgusting parasite! You are infecting my son’s relationship, clinging to him when he wants nothing to do with you!"

Camilla raised a trembling hand to her stinging cheek, her breath catching in her throat.

"Look at them!" Margo spat cruelly, gesturing wildly toward the closed front door. "They are perfect together. And you? You are nothing more than a pathetic outsider. You are a leech. You are only surviving in this world by living off the pity of my late mother. Do not ever forget that you do not belong in this prestigious family!"

Trembling from the physical strike and the venomous words raining down on her, Camilla lowered her gaze to the cold marble floor. She silently endured the brutal reminder that she was never meant to belong here.

Hours passed, and the sprawling estate grew quiet once more. Camilla sat alone in her room, seeking internal strength from the memory of her late mother. Her mother had faced life's cruelties with quiet dignity. Camilla needed that dignity now more than ever to face the evening's Embassy dinner.

She opened her wardrobe and deliberately chose to wear a breathtaking, shimmering pale gold gown. The dress was personally gifted to her by the late Eleanor Ashford. Eleanor had always hoped Camilla would one day stand proudly beside her grandson. The fabric cascaded down her figure like liquid gold, catching the ambient light and hugging her waist perfectly before flowing elegantly to the floor. She paired it elegantly with her own mother's delicate pearl necklace, the cool beads resting gently against her collarbone. She pinned her hair up in a sophisticated twist and applied just enough makeup to mask the fading redness on her cheek.

When she finally stepped out into the main hall on the ground floor, the rhythmic tapping of her heels against the polished floor echoed through the space, drawing Roman’s attention.

He was standing near the grand staircase, waiting. But as the tapping of her heels grew closer, he looked up.

Roman froze in his tracks.

He forgot the phone in his hand as a faint crease formed between his brows. His dark eyes swept over her, captivated by her transformation. The pale gold gown illuminated her skin, making her look ethereal. The quiet, faded woman he ignored every day had vanished, replaced by a stunning vision of grace.

Feeling nervous under his intense, lingering stare, Camilla nervously brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"Is... is the dress too much?" she asked.

Roman blinked, pulling himself out of a trance. "There is no need to worry," he replied quietly, his voice a shade lower than usual. He pocketed his phone. "Let's go."

The drive to the Veridia Embassy was shrouded in shadows. Inside the spacious luxury car, the usual suffocating distance that defined their marriage vanished. He sat closer, his broad shoulders encroaching on her space.

Camilla noticed his tie was slightly askew. Without thinking, she instinctively reached out her hands to adjust the collar of his crooked tie. Her fingertips brushed the warm skin of his neck.

Their eyes locked in close proximity. The sudden intimacy caused Roman to inhale sharply. He quickly averted his gaze, looking out the tinted window to hide his reaction, his jaw locked tight.

Realizing what she had done, Camilla pulled her hands back carefully. She shrank back into her seat, adopting a submissive tone.

"I promise to maintain a strict physical distance from you at the diplomatic event," she offered softly. "Since you will soon be marrying Valerie, I feel it is only right for me to know my proper place. I will stay slightly behind you in the shadows. I do not want to cause any embarrassing misunderstandings for your image."

Roman turned his head slowly back toward her. His gaze was incredibly sharp, pinning her to the seat. His voice dropped to a dangerously cold register.

"If you dare to step away from me tonight," he issued a fierce warning, leaning in closer, "or if you pretend you are not my actual wife in front of the elite crowd, you will deeply regret it."

Camilla’s breath hitched. She stared at him in stunned hesitation. "But—"

Roman aggressively cut off her quiet attempt to protest. "Tonight, you will stand directly beside me. You will fully operate as my wife. Exactly as you should."

Under the heavy, suffocating silence of the vehicle, the weight of his demand pressed down on her chest. Camilla lowered her gaze.

"Yes," she whispered her strict compliance.

But deep inside her mind, a single, burning thought echoed endlessly as she struggled to understand why Roman was suddenly doing this.
