Accepting the Rejection
{Ryk’s P.O.V.}
"That's right, suck my cock," I growled, my fingers tangling in the blonde hair of the omega on her knees before me.
She let out a soft moan, her lips tightening around my shaft as she slid her mouth up and down my length. She knew what she was doing, her tongue swirling around the sensitive tip of my erection, drawing a low grunt from my chest. I leaned back against the headboard of my bed, letting the physical sensation take over.
Then, a sharp knock rattled the heavy wooden door.
"Who is it?" I called out, not bothering to stop her rhythm.
"It's Macy."
The name sent a sudden shock straight through the haze of my lust. Before I could even process her voice, her scent filtered through the cracks of the door.
It was incredible.
A rich, mouthwatering aroma of fresh roses flooded my senses. It was sweeter than anything I had ever encountered, so potent that my dick throbbed, swelling even thicker in the omega's mouth. The she-wolf on her knees took my sudden hardness as a compliment, sucking harder, her throat swallowing my length. But I wasn't even looking at her. My mind was fully focused on the door.
"Ugh! Go away, bitch!" the omega shouted, pulling her mouth off my cock to glare toward the hallway.
"Shut the fuck up and just suck my dick!" I snapped, grabbing her hair and shoving her head straight back down. I forced my shaft deep into her throat, ignoring her muffled protests as she tried to accommodate my size. Why couldn't they ever just do their job without speaking?
I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself as the scent of roses grew stronger, wrapping around me like a physical force. Grim, my inner wolf, was clawing at the walls of my mind, his claws tearing at my consciousness. *Claim her! Mark her! She is ours!* he roared, desperate and wild.
But I refused to yield. I had a plan, and I was going to follow through with it. I needed a strong, high-ranking female to stand beside me as Luna, not a broken, pathetic maid who could barely look anyone in the eye.
"Come in, Macy," I called out.
The door swung open, and Macy stepped into the room. The moment her eyes landed on us, her face twisted into a mask of pure disgust and irritation. She didn't look hurt. She just looked deeply annoyed.
"What do you want?" I asked, my voice cold as I tried to ignore the way my body burned just from having her in the same room.
"You know why I'm here," she said, her voice flat, devoid of emotion.
I smirked, leaning back. She felt the bond. I could see it in the way her breathing hitched slightly, though she tried to hide it. Grim was pacing in my head, begging me to throw the omega off and claim my true mate. If I didn't do this now, I knew I would lose my nerve.
I grabbed the hair of the she-wolf on her knees and yanked her head back. "You, whatever your name is, get the fuck out."
The omega blinked in shock, saliva dripping from her lips. "What?"
"You heard me. Get out."
"Ugh!" She scrambled to her feet, grabbing her discarded clothes from the floor, and rushed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
I stood up from the bed, completely naked, my hard erection standing proud. Macy didn't even flinch. She kept her brown eyes locked onto mine, showing zero intimidation at my nakedness. She was stunningly beautiful, even with the faint bruises on her skin from her daily chores, but I had to kill this weakness.
"So, I guess you feel it too, huh?" I asked, gesturing to the heavy, electric tension of the mate bond hanging in the air between us.
"Yes," she replied simply.
"Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but if you came here thinking I was going to accept you as my mate, you're dead wrong," I said, forcing a layer of disgust into my tone to mask the sudden pang of regret in my chest.
She just stared at me. There was no pain in her eyes. No tears. Nothing. The blankness of her expression rattled me more than tears ever could, but I pushed through it.
"I, Ryker Thorne, future Alpha of the Nightshade Pack, hereby reject you, Mace Rae, as my mate," I stated, the ritualistic words echoing in the quiet room.
I waited for her to break. I expected her to fall to her knees, begging for my mercy, crying for the bond. Instead, a slow, mocking smirk curled onto her lips.
"Thank you," she said.
My jaw tightened. "What?"
"Thank you," she repeated, her voice dripping with venomous gratitude. "You have no idea how happy I am that you're rejecting me right now. You are saving me the misery of being tied to you for the rest of my life because of some stupid biological bond. And you're saving me the agony of having to be the Luna to this pathetic pack of misfits, mutts, and murderers."
Her words cut deep, drawing blood from my pride. Why wasn't she hurting? Why was I the one feeling a sharp ache in my chest?
"Macy, what are you..."
"I, Mace Rae St-Claire, daughter of the late Alpha Garrett Alaric St-Claire of the Iron Stream Pack, hereby accept your rejection."
The moment the words left her mouth, the world seemed to shatter.
The acceptance of a rejection from someone of pure Alpha blood was a force I was never prepared for. The bond didn't just snap; it was forcefully ripped out of my soul. The agony hit me like a runaway freight train, knocking the wind straight out of my lungs. My knees buckled, and I collapsed onto the floor, clutching my chest as if my ribs were collapsing inward. I gasped for air, tears of sheer physical pain pricking my eyes.
But Macy stood there, tall and untouched. Her Alpha blood acted as a shield, leaving her completely fine. She looked down at me, her expression filled with cold satisfaction. She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving me gasping on the floor.
Inside my head, Grim let out a devastating, mournful howl. He whimpered like a wounded pup, his grief heavy and suffocating.
*I told you not to reject her!* Grim roared, his voice laced with pure fury.
*You never told me she was an Alpha!* I spat back, trying to defend my foolish decision.
*It shouldn't have mattered! Her blood and her rank shouldn't have mattered! We were her mate! We were supposed to love her, cherish her, and protect her!*
Before I could reply, Grim aggressively slammed a mental wall between us. The connection was severed. I tried to reach him, but there was nothing. My own wolf had locked me out, plunging my mind into complete, agonizing silence.

Stepping out of Ryk's bedroom, the sudden lightness in my chest was almost dizzying. It felt like a physical weight had been lifted from my shoulders, the invisible collar of the mate bond shattering into dust. I walked down the quiet hallway, a genuine smile tugging at the corners of my lips.
Deep within my mind, Selene let out a soft, low whimper. The severance of the bond stung, but she didn't grieve.
*Selene, I'm sorry,* I whispered to her.
*Do not apologize, Macy,* Selene replied, her voice strong and steady. *He rejected us first. It hurts, but the Moon Goddess has a far better path for us. We do not belong to a coward.*
*We're leaving after this weekend,* I told her, my determination hardening. *I will not spend another day serving the people who destroyed my family.*
*I am with you,* she agreed. *We will survive as rogues. We are stronger than they think.*
I made my way down to the kitchen, my heart lighter than it had been in eight years. Today was my eighteenth birthday, but there would be no party, no gifts, and no celebration.
I got to work immediately, preparing breakfast for the pack. I moved quickly, frying eggs, grilling ham and sausage patties, and baking fresh bread. The delicious aromas filled the kitchen, but I knew none of it was meant for me.
Once the food was set out on the kitchen island, buffet-style, Silas called my name.
"Macy," he barked, his voice rough.
I walked over, keeping my head down. "Yes?"
"Did you send out the invitations for Ryk's ceremony?"
"Yes, Alpha. They were sent out this morning. Every neighboring pack will receive them within twenty-four hours," I replied, keeping my voice neutral.
Silas grunted, looking over the spread of food. "Good. Since it's your birthday, and you haven't managed to screw anything up today, you may have one small serving of breakfast. Don't let me see you taking more."
"Thank you," I said, genuinely relieved.
I grabbed a small plate, taking a single scoop of scrambled eggs, one sausage patty, a slice of ham, and a cup of water. It was a meager portion, but it was more than I usually received.
I took the plate back to my tiny room in the basement, sitting on the edge of my cot. I ate slowly, chewing each bite twenty times to make the food last as long as possible. It was a trick I had learned over the years to trick my stomach into feeling full.
As I chewed, a few silent tears escaped my eyes and fell onto my plate. I was eighteen. I had just been rejected by my fated mate, and my only birthday present was a small plate of leftovers eaten in a dark basement. But I wiped the tears away. This was the last time I would ever cry in this house. This weekend, Ryk would take the Alpha title, and during the chaos of the celebration, I would slip away into the forest and never look back.
Three days later.
The Nightshade packhouse had descended into pure chaos.
Alphas, Betas, and high-ranking warriors from various packs were arriving for the transition ceremony. The hallways were packed with people, and the air was thick with competing scents. The unmated she-wolves of the pack were running around in a frantic frenzy, wearing their tightest dresses and heavy makeup, desperate to catch the eye of an elite guest.
I was carrying a heavy wooden crate loaded with clean linens down the main corridor, my muscles aching from hours of endless prep work.
Suddenly, Sela, Ryk's twenty-two-year-old sister, slammed hard into my shoulder.
I lost my footing, my knees crashing hard against the polished wooden floor. The crate slipped from my hands, the clean sheets tumbling out onto the dusty floor.
"Get out of my way, you pathetic omega!" Sela screamed.
She didn't even live in the packhouse anymore, but she was here, practically vibrating with desperate energy, hoping to snare a powerful Alpha today. She glared down at me, her eyes filled with disgust, before turning on her heel and rushing off toward the front doors.
I swallowed the anger bubbling in my chest, refusing to let her see me cry. I slowly gathered the ruined linens, my knees bruised and burning.
*Let her have her fun,* Selene whispered in my mind, her voice laced with quiet amusement. *She has no idea that her precious brother's mate was the very person she just shoved to the dirt.*
I smiled to myself, pushing the pain aside. Just a few more hours, and I would be free from all of them.

I sat in the luxurious leather backseat of the SUV, staring out the tinted window as the vehicle navigated the winding forest roads leading into Nightshade territory. My Beta, Zander, was at the wheel, his hands relaxed on the steering wheel, but his eyes constantly scanning the mirrors.
My mind was fixed on the upcoming ceremony, and my blood burned with anticipation. I had a deep, venomous hatred for Alpha Silas and his arrogant children. The way they ran their pack was a disgrace, treating their members like slaves while they lived in luxury.
But my hatred ran deeper than that.
Eight years ago, the Nightshade Pack had ruthlessly slaughtered the Iron Stream Pack, taking their land and resources. The Iron Stream Pack had been our allies, but at the time, my father was too weak, and our pack was not strong enough to wage a full-scale war. He had been forced to sign a neutral treaty with Silas to protect our own people.
But my father was gone, and I was now the Alpha of the Shadow Creek Pack—the largest, most dangerous, and formidable pack in the central United States. I had spent the last eight years building our strength, recruiting skilled fighters, and preparing for the day we could finally deliver justice.
That day was today.
The treaty signed by my father was tied to Silas's reign. The very second Ryk Thorne accepted the Alpha title, that neutral pact would dissolve. I had no intention of signing a new treaty with his arrogant son. I was going to publicly declare the Nightshade Pack as our official rivals, and then I would tear their empire down brick by brick.
"Hey, get your head out of the clouds and get out of the car," Zander's voice boomed from the front seat, pulling me out of my dark thoughts.
We had arrived, the SUV rolling to a stop in the crowded parking area of the Nightshade estate.
"Fuck you, Zander," I muttered, adjusting the cuffs of my tailored suit jacket.
Zander grinned in the rearview mirror. "Love you too, Alpha. Let's go watch these mutts celebrate their own demise."
I opened the door and stepped out into the cool air, my wolf pacing inside me, ready for the storm we were about to unleash.

{Macy’s P.O.V.}
The expansive backyard of the packhouse was buzzing with loud, arrogant voices. Hundreds of guests filled the neatly manicured lawns, drinking expensive wine and boasting about their ranks.
I moved through the crowd like a shadow, carrying a heavy silver tray loaded with champagne flutes. I kept my head down, trying to ignore the sneers and whispered insults from the pack members who knew my status as the pack's resident slave.
"Well, aren't you a pretty little thing," a voice drawled, blocking my path.
I stopped, looking up to see a young, well-dressed warrior from a visiting pack. He had a smug grin on his face, his eyes shamelessly scanning my body. "When do you finish your shift? I'd love to show you a good time," he said, leaning in closer, his scent of cheap cologne and alcohol washing over me.
"I'm underage," I lied smoothly, keeping my voice flat. "Unless you want the Alpha to execute you for messing with a minor, I suggest you find someone else."
The warrior blinked, his grin faltering. He grumbled something under his breath and stepped aside, looking thoroughly annoyed. I held back a smirk as I walked past him. He was ranked, but clearly stupid. My scent easily proved I was of age, but his lust had blinded his senses.
I made my way toward the back of the yard, where the grand wooden platform had been set up.
Alpha Silas stood at the center, flanked by Ryk and an Elder of the pack. The crowd went silent as the Elder began the ritual chant, his voice carrying over the lawn.
I watched from the shadows of a large oak tree. Silas stepped forward, reciting the ancient words of abdication, formally passing his power and title to his son. Ryk stood tall, his jaw clenched, looking every bit the proud Alpha he thought he was.
The Elder drew a silver ceremonial blade, the polished metal catching the bright sunlight. With a swift movement, he sliced open Ryk's palm. Dark red blood welled from the cut, dripping steadily into a golden chalice held by the Elder.
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause and cheers as Ryk drank from the chalice, officially sealing his status as the new Alpha of the Nightshade Pack.
This was my moment.
While everyone was distracted, cheering and rushing toward the platform to congratulate the new Alpha, I set my empty tray down on a table and slipped toward the edge of the yard. The dense forest was only fifty yards away. Once I hit the treeline, I would be gone, and they would never find me.
I picked up my pace, my heart hammering against my ribs. Just twenty more yards.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed my hair from behind, yanked me backward, and Sela's hand flew out. A sharp, blinding pain exploded across my cheek as she slapped me.
The force sent me crashing face-first into the dirt. My vision swam, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.
"You sneaky little bitch!" Sela shrieked, standing over me, her face contorted with rage.
"What the hell is your problem?" I spat, wiping a smear of blood from my lip.
"Are you trying to poison me?!" Sela screamed, her voice drawing the attention of several nearby guests. "There is cheese in the enchiladas! You know damn well I am lactose intolerant!"
I stared at her, disbelieving. She was seriously attacking me over a catering mistake?
"Are you fucking kidding me right now?" I said, pushing myself up onto my elbows. "I didn't make the menu, Sela, your mother did! And you're a fucking idiot!"
***
"WHAT did you just say to me?!" Sela shrieked, her face turning a deep, angry shade of purple.
"You heard me," I said, slowly standing up and brushing the dirt off my clothes. I was done cowering. I was leaving today anyway, and I wasn't going to let this spoiled brat treat me like garbage one last time. "Enchiladas are made with cheese; it's literally in the recipe. The fact that you don't know that makes you even dumber than you look. And nobody forced you to eat them, you dumb fuck."
Before Sela could respond, another hand flew out, striking my other cheek and sending me crashing back to the ground. The pain was immediate, radiating through my jaw.
I looked up to see Isolde, the former Luna, standing beside her daughter. Her eyes were wide with fury.
"How dare you speak to my daughter that way!" Isolde hissed.
"Mom, she said you're the one who ordered the cheese enchiladas!" Sela whined, crossing her arms.
"I did," Isolde snapped, before turning her glare back to me. "Macy! Why didn't you remind me that Sela was lactose intolerant?!"
I let out a harsh, bloody laugh from the ground. "It's not my fucking job to remind you what your own child is allergic to. If you can't even remember that, you're a sorry excuse for a mother."
Isolde's face twisted with pure, homicidal rage. "You ungrateful little rat!"
She lunged forward, her foot connecting hard with my ribs. I gasped, the air knocked out of my lungs as a sharp, agonizing pain flared through my chest.
"Don't you ever!" *Kick.*
"Ever!" *She slapped me across the face, the force rattling my skull.*
"Ever!" *Another kick to my abdomen, making me curl into a ball.*
"Talk to me that way again!" Isolde screamed, her high-pitched voice ringing in my ears.
She reared her leg back, aiming the solid heel of her shoe directly at my face. I was too weak to move, my body screaming in pain, my vision beginning to fade into darkness.
But I looked up at her, baring my bloody teeth. "Fuck... you," I whispered.
Isolde snarled, driving her foot down with all her strength, intending to crush my face.
Suddenly, a massive, earth-shattering roar ripped through the backyard.
The sound was so incredibly loud, so deep and powerful, that the ground beneath us literally shook. The sheer force of the roar seemed to vibrate through the air, stopping Isolde dead in her tracks. Her foot froze just inches from my nose.
My vision was rapidly blurring, darkness creeping in at the edges of my mind, but a sudden, overwhelming scent cut through the smell of dirt and blood.
It was fresh rain, pine, and rich earth. It was the most intoxicating, soothing scent I had ever experienced.
Then, a deep, furious, and commanding voice thundered across the yard, carrying a weight of pure Alpha authority that made every wolf in the vicinity tremble:
"GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY MATE!!!"
Did he say... mate?
