The Rogue Encounter
Alpha Vander’s POV
Shoving the bedroom door open, I stepped inside and found the space empty. The cold night wind whipped the heavy curtains through the wide-open window frame.
"Fucking moron!" I cursed aloud, my voice echoing in the quiet room. I slammed my fist into the doorframe, splintering the polished wood under my knuckles. I had not handcuffed her to the bedposts this time. I assumed she was locked safely inside, weakened by her ordeal. It had not crossed my mind to check the window latches.
I marched across the floor and leaned out over the sill. The crisp air hit my face, carrying the distinct, sweet trail of her citrus scent. She was out there alone. I inhaled deeply, searching for the musky stench of accomplices, but found nothing. No one had helped her. I gritted my teeth, begrudgingly impressed by her sheer stubbornness. She had survived the steep, dangerous drop to the ground without breaking her neck. Fallon was far from healthy, and a fall from this height would have crippled an ordinary wolf.
My jaw tight, I spun around and stalked out of the room. I stormed through the busy corridors of the packhouse. Wolves parted ways as I approached, my heavy boots stomping against the floorboards. I turned a sharp corner and collided hard with Alpha Ronan.
"Fallon has taken off!" I snapped. My dark tone left no room for debate, making it explicitly clear I was going straight after her. She had no idea where she was, and this unfamiliar wilderness was no place for a vulnerable female.
Ronan stiffened. He clenched his jaw, his eyes darting away toward the floor for a fraction of a second. His tense body language screamed that he was hiding something important.
"What are you not telling me?" I demanded, stepping into his personal space.
Ronan swallowed hard, reluctant to speak. "Frost Crescent has a severe problem with feral Rogue Lycans. They have occupied the dense edge of my territory, situated just across the boundary stream. We have lost a few pack members to them."
Rage boiled in my chest, hot and fast. Rogues. They were a lingering problem from my father’s era. I dealt in execution, not banishment, because banished wolves always turned into feral pests that fed on innocent packs.
"Why the fuck has no one said anything?" I roared, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt. "I could have dealt with them the moment I arrived!"
"We didn’t want to be in your debt!" Ronan choked out, raising his hands defensively.
Furious that he had withheld this crucial, life-threatening information from me, I shoved the Alpha hard against the wall. The plaster cracked behind his skull. I leaned in close, bearing my teeth. "You will always be in my debt. Do you understand! I am your King. This is strike one, Ronan."
I dropped him and marched out of the packhouse, stepping into the freezing night air. I hit the tree line and immediately stripped off my clothes, discarding my shirt and pants on the damp grass.
I let my beast loose. Bones cracked and reformed in a rapid, fluid motion. Muscle tore and rebuilt thicker, denser. Within seconds, I shifted into my massive, terrifying seven-foot Lycan form. Despite my broad shoulders and towering height, I moved through the brush in deadly silence. The soft earth molded beneath my heavy paws, leaving the forest undisturbed as I hunted.
Her sweet citrus scent was a glowing beacon in the dark woods. I tracked her distinct path easily, weaving through the thick trunks. Every possessive instinct inside my mind screamed at me to open the mindlink and order her back immediately. But I held off. Ordering her around would only fuel her defiance and make her hate me more. I was curious to see exactly what she planned to do and how far she would go on her own.
Then, my sensitive ears picked up the rushing sounds of water cutting through the rocks. The boundary stream.
Genuine panic pierced my chest. Ronan’s warning echoed loudly in my head. Fallon’s scent trail was heading straight toward the territory infested with the feral Rogues.
I rushed forward. My heavy foot came down and snapped a dry twig on the forest floor. The sharp crack echoed through the silent trees.
Instantly, a shockwave hit me through the mate bond. I felt Fallon's mild annoyance twist into sheer, unadulterated fear. The metallic tang of adrenaline spiked in the air. Her sweet citrus scent rapidly mixed with the foul, rotting stench of another beast. She was not alone.
"Fallon, talk to me," I pleaded through the link.
Nothing. Her mind went terrifyingly blank. Her emotions vanished, leaving a hollow, agonizing void in my head.
I dropped to all fours and raced forward with explosive speed. The dark trees blurred past me. I reached the rushing stream and dove recklessly across the water, plunging into the pitch-black forest on the other side.
I threw my head back and let out a ferocious, bloodcurdling howl. Rogue or not, anyone who touched my mate forfeited their life.
The foul stench grew overpowering, nearly masking her scent. I pushed my massive legs harder, tearing up the mud and dead leaves.
Ahead, in the thick shadows, I spotted her. Fallon’s arms stretched desperately across the dirt ground. She made no sound as something massive and violent dragged her backward into a thick, thorny bush.
I pounced without hesitation. My massive frame launched through the air, landing squarely on top of the feral Rogue Lycan. We crashed into the dirt, crushing the brush beneath our combined weight.
The beast scrambled beneath me. Glowing, dark yellow eyes glared up at me in the pitch-black darkness. Saliva dripped from his jagged teeth.
"She is mine!" I growled, baring my lethal fangs right in his face.
"I found her," the feral Rogue snapped back insolently. He thrashed under my grip, refusing to back down.
"Bow, you fucking idiot," I roared, unleashing my full Alpha aura. The oppressive weight of my power pressed down on the clearing. "I am your King!"
The Rogue simply laughed in my face. His foul breath washed over my snout. He glanced mockingly from me to the terrified Fallon lying on the ground.
"She is a wolf," he sneered. "What kind of Lycan King is mated to a wolf?"
Without warning, the feral beast surged upward. He swiped at my chest. I dodged, but his sharp claws caught my shoulder and sank deep into my flesh. He dragged his claws downward, ripping through muscle and splitting my back open.
Hot blood spilled down my spine. The stinging, visceral pain fueled my rage.
Thinking he actually had the upper hand, the Rogue let out a guttural half-laugh and lunged forward for the kill. His jaws snapped toward my throat.
I met his attack head-on. I dodged his snapping teeth and drove my arm forward. My razor-sharp claws pierced his skin, sinking deep into the Rogue's stomach. I gutted him, burying my hand into his insides.
The beast howled in agony.
My free hand shot up and clasped his thick neck tightly. My claws dug into his throat, hitting bone. I squeezed tighter and tighter, applying bone-crushing pressure as his yellow eyes bulged from their sockets. He choked, letting out wet, gurgling sounds. I squeezed harder, twisting my wrist with brutal force. Tendons snapped. Spine cracked.
With one final wrench, I severed the Rogue's head right off from his shoulders.
A thick spray of dark blood erupted from his stump, splattering across the tree trunks and soaking into the forest floor. I stood over his twitching, headless corpse, my chest heaving as I dragged oxygen into my lungs.
I tossed the severed, bleeding head casually to the dirt like a piece of garbage. It rolled away, coming to a stop near a tree root.
I turned around, the adrenaline still surging through my veins. I was ready to pick Fallon up, to hold her close, and finally take her home to safety. I expected her to run into my arms.
But instead of relief, a wave of sheer, paralyzing terror washed over me through the bond. The emotion was so strong it felt like a physical blow to the chest.
I looked down at her. She was wide awake, pressed into the dirt. Her wide grey eyes stared up at me in unfiltered horror. She looked at the blood dripping from my massive claws, then at the headless corpse leaking onto the soil, and finally up at my face. She did not see a savior. She saw a monster.
"You killed him!" she screamed.
