Chained and Defiant
Fallon’s POV
The screeching of twisted metal and shattering glass replays on an agonizing loop inside my mind. I can feel the violent spin of the car, the jarring impact, the smell of burnt rubber mixing with the metallic tang of blood. My mother’s last moments flash before my eyes, a nightmare I cannot wake up from. But another detail haunts me just as fiercely. The heavy, magnetic pull on my heart had spiked mere moments before the tires lost control. Was he out there in the darkness? Was the Lycan King already watching me from the shadows? He must have been close enough to trigger the mate bond. The realization twists like a knife in my gut. Did he run us off the road? Is he the direct reason my mother is dead?
I blink against the harsh, unforgiving fluorescent lights of the hospital room. The steady beep of a heart monitor echoes in the sterile space. I try to shift my weight, but a sharp pain shoots up my battered legs. I look down at my wrist. A heavy steel handcuff locks my arm to the thick metal railing of the bed frame. I rattle the chain, the metallic clink mocking my helpless state. I am going nowhere unless Alpha Vander decides otherwise.
The curtain rings scrape loudly across the track as a doctor steps into the room. She flashes a bright, practiced smile that makes my stomach churn. "How are we feeling today?" The forced, chirpy tone grates on my frayed nerves.
I glare at her, gesturing to the heavy plaster casts encasing my broken legs. "Like I went head-to-head with a freight train," I snap sarcastically.
"Okay," the doctor says, her smile never faltering. "I just need to do some routine checks, if you don't mind."
"Do I even have a choice?" I raise my cuffed wrist, letting the chain rattle against the solid metal.
She lets out a light giggle and clips a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, unfazed by my captivity. Are they all this brainwashed? Is this what living in a pack does to a person's mind? My mother spent years running, desperate to find a pack willing to protect us. But every time a pack kicked us out, a secret, selfish part of me felt relieved. I despised the concept of pack life. I hated the idea of surrendering my free will to a single, domineering Alpha. I hated the lack of privacy, the absolute submission.
"Well, your vitals look much better," the doctor notes, checking the screen above my head. "We are just waiting for those bones to start knitting back together. The healing process should speed up significantly after tomorrow."
Tomorrow. My eighteenth birthday. It is a monumental milestone I spent my childhood looking forward to, yet simultaneously dreading. The date feels tainted now. I always pictured celebrating my transition into adulthood with my mother by my side. Now, she is gone, and I am chained like an animal.
"Great," I mutter, rolling my eyes. My throat burns. I fiercely swallow down the thick, choking lump of grief. I blink fast, refusing to let a single tear fall. I will not cry in front of these people. I will not let anyone in this hostile territory think I am weak.
Suddenly, the air in the room shifts. The heavy, intoxicating scent of musky oak and pine rolls through the doorway. A deep, instinctual tug flares in the center of my chest, an undeniable, magnetic pull that my biological nature craves.
Alpha Vander steps into the doorway, his massive frame blocking out the hall light. His piercing cobalt blue eyes lock onto my face, scanning my injuries. He runs a large hand through his short, dark hair. He doesn't take a step closer, simply waiting by the threshold for the doctor to address him. They speak openly, making no effort to hide their conversation. The doctor informs him that my sarcastic attitude is likely a defense mechanism for my high pain levels. Of course I am in excruciating pain. My mother is dead, my legs are shattered, and I am cuffed to a bed.
"You're awake," Vander states, his deep voice rumbling across the room.
"Been awake since yesterday," I snap in pure annoyance. I turn my head, flatly refusing to meet his gaze.
"And feeling sarcastic, I see."
"What do you want with me?" The demand rips from my throat, shaking with raw rage. Why spend years hunting down one ordinary wolf?
A faint smirk touches the corner of his lips. "It is rare for anyone to speak to me with such venom and get away with it."
I strain against the cuff. "Do you honestly think I care about your fragile ego? You killed my dad. You hunted us like prey. You most likely killed my mum too."
Instead of exploding into a feral rage, Vander calmly crosses the room and sinks into the plastic chair beside my bed. He looks utterly unbothered by my accusations. He reaches up, casually scratching the dark stubble on his jaw. "Your father betrayed my father. He committed treason. As for your mother, I was not involved in that crash. That was her own doing."
"You forced her into a corner!" I yell. "You let her die!"
"You may feel that way right now, Fallon," Vander replies, his tone maddeningly even. "But maybe your mother got exactly what was coming to her."
My blood turns to liquid fire. "What the fuck did you just say?" If I had the use of my legs, I would vault over the rails and punch him right in his smug face.
"You heard me perfectly," Vander says, leaning forward slightly. "I am the King of Alphas. She kept you hidden away from me for years. She refused to bow. Her fate was sealed a long time ago, whether it was delivered by my hands or in the hands of the Moon Goddess."
"She chose not to bow for a good fucking reason!" I scream. My lungs burn.
"Oh, Fallon. You have so much to learn."
"I am not learning a damn thing from you! I already know the truth. My mum taught me everything I needed to know about monsters like you."
"Fallon, you can at least listen to reason—"
"Just you wait until I have healed," I hiss, interrupting him. "I will make you pay for what you said about my mother!" Even as the threat leaves my lips, every inch of my body fights my logic. The mate bond hums fiercely under my skin, begging me to bridge the distance, demanding I press my body against his. I despise the bond. I hate the biological betrayal. And the worst part is knowing the pull will magnify tenfold tomorrow.
Vander leans back in the chair, crossing his arms over his broad chest. "Just one more day, Fallon. Tomorrow, you won't be able to resist me."
"Try me," I growl through clenched teeth.
He stands up, a deep laugh echoing in his chest. "I don't need to try. I already know exactly what will happen." He turns on his heel and strides out of the room, practically belly-laughing at my defiance.
His footsteps fade down the corridor. A moment later, a young nurse slips into the room. She offers a hesitant smile as she sets a fresh plastic jug of ice water on my bedside table.
"Hi, I'm nurse Piper," she introduces herself softly. She glances nervously toward the empty hallway. "I assume things didn't go very well?"
"No, he is a fucking moron," I declare loudly.
Piper gasps. Her wide green eyes dilate in sheer fear. "Please, don't call him that."
I narrow my eyes. "Why do you care? It is not like you are mated to the bastard. You don't owe him anything."
Piper tucks a trembling strand of jet-black hair behind her ear. "He is the King of Alphas. Your careless actions could get us all into serious trouble."
"What do you mean?" I frown.
"If he decides to punish one single member of the pack, he punishes all of us," Piper whispers frantically.
My stomach drops. "That is so messed up." This is the exact reason I loathe the pack system. An Alpha enforces absolute control through collective terror.
"It is just how it operates around here," Piper murmurs. "It is much easier when he isn't visiting the territory."
I glance out the window, noting the unfamiliar treeline. "This isn't Onyx Bay, is it?" Onyx Bay was the last territory we occupied. Why would Vander haul me to a different pack?
"No, we are stationed at Frost Crescent," Piper explains. "We are one of the smaller northern packs. Your physical injuries were far too severe to move you any further. Alpha Vander carried you through those doors himself. He practically screamed at the entire medical staff to save your life. I hate to even think about what would have happened if you died."
My jaw drops. Why was he so desperate to keep me breathing?
"I would have been better off dead," I say bitterly. I remember the rogue packs he brutally slaughtered.
Piper shakes her head. "Things really cannot be that bad. Besides, I think you are lucky to be mated to a King. I haven't even met my destined mate yet."
I grip the bedrail. "If you don't have ties here, then you have no reason to stay. Help me. Escape with me."
Piper stares at me as if I have lost my mind. She gestures wildly to the bottom half of the bed. "You have broken legs. There is no chance you are going anywhere. And I am not stupid enough to cross the Lycan King. That is a guaranteed death sentence."
I let out an inward groan and slump back against the stiff pillows, staring in defeat at my battered casts. She is right. I am trapped.
I am left alone for the remainder of the long day. Right before her shift ends, Piper pops her head back into the room to check my vitals. She clicks her tongue when she notices my morning water cup remains untouched.
"You need to drink, Fallon. I will see you in the morning."
"I'm not going anywhere," I retort.
Piper forces a small laugh and shuts the door. Why do they think my captivity is a joke? I just want a way out. I want to rewind the clock.
I squeeze my eyes shut, letting out a long, frustrated groan. The silence of the room presses down on me. Then, the heavy, distinct scent of musky oak wafts over my senses again. I snap my eyes open.
"Why are you back?" I snort dismissively, glaring at the doorway.
Vander steps out of the hallway shadows. He moves with a lethal grace. "I thought you might want this to read." He approaches the bed and drops a familiar object onto the thin blanket.
I stare down. It is my favorite paperback book. The edges are charred, the cover bent, but the pages are intact.
"Where did you get it?" I stammer, caught off guard.
"My Beta grabbed it from the wreckage," Vander explains smoothly. He turns his broad back on me and takes a step toward the door.
"Wait—why?" My voice cracks.
Vander pauses, glancing back over his shoulder. "It seems important to you. You didn't have a lot to your name, but it is something you kept close."
He steps out of the room, leaving me alone in the dim light. I sit up slightly, staring blankly at the battered book resting on my lap. My fingers brush the singed cover. The gesture rattles my brain. I have only ever known Alpha Vander to be a ruthless psychopath. A tyrant who slaughtered my family. Not someone who paid attention to my trivial belongings. Not someone who showed the capacity to care.
Who is the Lycan King? As the clock ticks closer to midnight, the confusing tension twists tight in my chest. Tomorrow, the mate bond takes full control. And for the first time, I have no idea what to expect.
