A Fleeting Sanctuary
POV Vaelia
The heavy oak doors of the dining room click shut behind me. The suffocating weight of Alpha Zarek’s aura still crushes my chest, making it hard to draw a full breath. My hands tremble as I walk down the sunlit corridor, putting distance between myself and the nightmare I just escaped. Zarek is a ruthless dictator. He is an intimidating Pyrehowl beast who, in a matter of hours, has made my cruel former mate Voktor look like a harmless fool.
To Zarek, I am less than an omega. I am a frustrating inconvenience forced upon him by a biological quirk. He despises me. He strips me down to my core with his burning anger and slanderous words. But as I stand in the grand hallway, my heart pounding against my ribs, a dark realization sets in. I cannot blame his monstrous reaction. What powerful Alpha in his right mind would willingly claim a second-chance mate branded across the country as a filthy cheater?
The agonizing truth of my innocence feels like it will remain buried beneath Voktor’s crafted lies. I am permanently painted and mocked as the adulterous Luna across Darktide-City. There is nothing I can do to wash that stain away, no proof I can offer to clear my name.
I am trapped in a psychological cage. If I flee these stone walls, I become a vulnerable, mateless rogue. I will be hunted down, scavenging for survival, and left exposed to Voktor's dangerous power. Voktor possesses the resources to track a solitary wolf across the continent. If I choose to stay, I accept a chained protection under a tyrant's roof. I am condemned to watch my terrifying new mate belittle me and parade his naked mistress before my eyes. Zarek is searching for any excuse to throw me out. His cold silver eyes are devoid of loyalty.
Yet, what shattered the last remnants of my fragile spirit was his commanding mention of pups. I abandoned the dream of bearing children long ago, back when Voktor’s heart grew cold and the nursery doors remained shut. The thought of opening my body to bear pups for a scarred man who despises my existence feels physically impossible. Every fiber of my being rejects the notion. I am torn between two terrifying prisons. Either I die a hunted rogue, or I become a humiliated breeding tool.
Amidst this overwhelming chaos in my mind, I focus on the man walking beside me. I look up at the Gamma assigned to escort me. He stands tall in his dark tactical uniform, a silver crest glinting on his chest plate. The sunlight streaming through the tall corridor windows catches the familiar angles of his jaw and the slight curve of his brow.
I stop dead in my tracks, my shoes scuffing against the polished marble floor. My breath hitches in my throat.
It is Soren-Vargan.
Vivid memories of my mother and a kinder world in the distant European leagues flood my exhausted mind. He was my trusted childhood friend. We were inseparable for three golden years until the devastating pack wars tore us apart and took her life. He was a beacon of light in a past that feels like a lifetime ago.
Yielding to a sudden wave of desperate vulnerability and profound loneliness, I drop my forced composure. I rush forward and throw my trembling arms around his neck, embracing his solid frame. For a fleeting second, I squeeze my eyes shut. I bury my face in his shoulder, letting the crushing burdens of the past twenty-four hours fall away. I am no longer the disgraced Luna or the unwanted mate. I am just Vaelia, finding solace.
But almost immediately, I feel the unnatural stiffening of his muscles.
The comforting warmth of our unexpected reunion vanishes into thin air. He awkwardly pulls back. A deep hesitation and sheer panic flash across his rugged face. He refuses to look at me; his gaze is fixed on something terrifying behind me.
"Luna..." Soren-Vargan murmurs. His voice drops to a terrified whisper. His eyes dart frantically over my shoulder.
A chill runs down my spine. I slowly open my eyes and turn my head.
I am met with the towering, ominous silhouette of Alpha Zarek. He steps out from the dining room shadows, the heavy doors still swaying slightly on their hinges behind him. A silent, lethal fury is carved so deeply into his sculpted features that the air around him seems to warp and sizzle with heat. His chest heaves with slow, deliberate breaths. His hands are clenched into massive fists at his sides, his knuckles stark white against his skin. If I were within his arm's reach at this moment, I swear to the Moon Goddess he would strangle the life out of me with the unbridled intensity of his obsidian gaze. The killing intent radiating from him is palpable.
I freeze. I am trapped in the crosshairs of a predator who just witnessed his mate in the arms of another man.
"Vaelia, you are not allowed to embrace another man, especially not in front of your mate and Alpha!"
Brida's panicked voice pierces the heavy silence. My entire body jumps. My heart plummets straight into my stomach as I stare at the monster I am bound to.
