The Ultimatum

Vaelia.

I wake with a sharp gasp, my chest heaving as I bolt upright in a massive, unfamiliar bed. The room is cavernous. Dark, heavy fabrics drape over the high windows and ornate furniture, trapping the shadows in the far corners of the chamber. Panic tightens its grip around my chest as my eyes dart to the glowing numbers on the clock resting on the nightstand.

Six hours. I have been asleep for six whole hours.

Voktor truly left me here in this monstrous fortress.

My bare feet hit the cold stone floor, sending a shiver up my legs. I rush toward a tall, ornate mirror standing in the corner of the room. My breath hitches, catching tight in my dry throat at the horrifying sight reflected back at me. A deep, bruised bite mark is etched right into the soft curve of my neck. It looks just like an inescapable curse. The broken skin throbs with a phantom ache, a physical reminder of the beast who claimed me while I was vulnerable.

Desperate for any sense of guidance or comfort, I close my eyes. "Zyra," I call out to my inner wolf, my mind crying for her presence. I plead with her to answer me, to tell me what we should do next. But she ignores my pleas. She retreats to the deepest recesses of my mind, leaving me stranded in a terrifying, suffocating silence.

Knowing the brutal gammas guard the front iron doors, I frantically tiptoe out of the sprawling bedroom. I navigate through the endless, labyrinthine hallways of the towering Bloodwrath-Manor. My eyes wildly search for an escape route. The stone walls feel like a cage closing in on me. I turn down a long corridor and spot a thick, sturdy tree branch brushing against a distant stained-glass window. I pause, calculating my jump. I just need to reach that ledge, push the heavy glass open, and climb down into the safety of the night.

But as I sneak closer through the dimly lit corridors, my sharp ears catch a sound that freezes the blood in my veins. Wet, guttural moans echo down the hall. They are accompanied by a heavy, rhythmic thud—the undeniable sound of bare flesh slapping against flesh. Morbid curiosity and sheer panic push me forward. I inch toward a slightly ajar, heavy oak door. I hold my breath and peer through the narrow crack.

The visual hits me like a physical blow. A naked woman is straddling his waist, riding him with desperate fervor. It is Zarek. His massive hands grip her hips, holding her down in place as he thrusts upward. Through the gap, the sight is raw and explicit. The woman bounces on his lap, taking his thick, hard cock deep inside her wet pussy with every downward thrust. The sickening, wet slap of their bodies colliding fills the room as he drives his heavy shaft into her dripping depths, pounding her relentlessly. Her body rocks with each brutal thrust, her head thrown back in ecstasy while his silver eyes remain shut in ruthless concentration.

My shock betrays me. I gasp too loudly.

Instantly, his terrifying, predatory silver eyes snap wide open. They lock directly onto my position through the narrow gap.

I spin on my heels and sprint down the corridor as fast as my legs can carry me. My heart hammers against my ribs, threatening to burst from my chest. But it is futile. He catches me in mere seconds. His massive hand clamps around my bicep, spinning me around and pinning my back against the cold stone wall. His towering chest is exposed. Brutal, jagged battle scars mar his skin, telling dark tales of endless bloodshed. His thick fingers casually, unapologetically fasten the heavy leather belt at his waist, tucking away the same raging erection I had just witnessed buried inside another woman.

"Don’t—don't touch me," I whimper. I shrink back against the stone wall, my body trembling like a leaf in a storm.

"Do not be dismayed," he says. His voice drips with a grim, mocking edge. He steps closer, his massive frame caging me in. "We haven’t even started…"

"You marked me!" My voice sharply cracks. Raw emotion and utter betrayal tear through my vocal cords. My fingers defensively cover the bruised bite on my neck.

His gaze sharpens, flashing with bitter, venomous mockery. "We are mates. Do I need to physically reshuffle your memory?"

"I refuse to be your captive toy!" I yell, pushing against his rock-hard chest, though he doesn't budge an inch. "I refuse to be forced into becoming your second-chance mate!"

His dark grin deepens into something truly sinister. He leans in, his tone cold and systematic. "Let me remind you of your ruined, pathetic reality. You have been stripped of your Luna title in the Steelclaw-Pack. Your ex-husband is publicly branding you as a filthy cheater across all territories. You have nothing left."

He steps so close I can feel the scorching, unnatural heat radiating off his scarred skin. His silver eyes suddenly burn with an unholy, terrifying amber fire.

"If you don’t want me as your second chance mate, reject me," he growls, his voice rumbling through the floorboards. "Raise your hand right now, and say those exact words."

Trembling from head to toe, feeling the crushing weight of his aura, I slowly raise my shaking hands. Inside my mind, Zyra suddenly screams. She claws at my consciousness, desperately pleading with me. *We need his protection to survive! Don't do it!* But I feel nothing but raw, paralyzing fear toward this scarred beast standing before me.

My trembling lips part. I gather the breath to speak the ancient words that will sever the mate bond forever.

"Don't let him fool you! You’re making a catastrophic mistake!"

The heavy footsteps of an elder interrupt me. Her voice rings out, stopping me dead in my tracks. It is Brida. She rushes forward, fearlessly ignoring Zarek's cold, guttural snap for her to shut her mouth. She stands directly between us, holding her ground against the Alpha's oppressive fury.

"Outside these heavy stone walls, you are nothing but a disgraced, mateless outcast," Brida says, laying bare the grim, inescapable reality of my situation. "You are ruined by Voktor's vicious lies. You have no home, no family, and no protection to return to. Any rogue out there could claim you, or worse, kill you."

I stare at her, my breath shallow. Her words paint a bloody, undeniable picture of my future if I walk out that door.

"But here," Brida continues, her voice dropping to an intense whisper, "seated as the Luna of the Bloodwrath-Pack, you will be worshipped. You will be guarded. You will hold absolute, unchecked power over the entire country. Your word could become law."

Her sharp words hit me hard, shattering my hesitation. The weight of her promise hangs heavily in the air. I look past Brida to Zarek's prowling, massive shadow. He is a dangerous man I didn't ask for. He clearly holds no love or respect for me, yet he is intensely studying my every panicked move, waiting for my downfall.

I realize with a cold, sinking clarity that this terrifying power is the only way to ensure I am never humiliated, beaten, or cast aside by anyone ever again. I don’t care about fairy-tale love this time. My heart is dead to it. Voktor killed that part of me. Now, I just want to be fiercely protected.

“I—I will stay,” I choose, my voice steadying as I lower my hands, locking eyes with the beast.
