The Rejection and the Bloodwrath

Vaelia.

The excruciating burn of scalding tea sears through the thin fabric of my dress. The boiling liquid blisters the tender skin of my lap as the heavy porcelain cup slips from my grasp and shatters against the hardwood floor. I gasp, my hands instinctively flying down to clutch my thighs, but before I can even process the stinging pain, I am violently struck by my mate.

The sheer force of Voktor’s hand snaps my head to the side. The crack of his palm against my cheek echoes like a gunshot in the oppressive silence of the study. I stumble, my vision swimming with dark spots, and hit the floor hard, my knees scraping against the jagged shards of broken porcelain.

"You worthless thing!" Voktor spits, his voice dripping with absolute disgust.

I look up through the blur of my unshed tears. His face is twisted in a hideous sneer, the features I once loved now distorted into a cruel reminder of the monstrous shell he has become. The golden-brown hair that used to fall softly across his forehead is wild and disheveled. The jaw I used to kiss is clenched tight, grinding with unhinged fury.

The air in the room is thick, suffocating me with the bitter, sour stench of his frustration and failure. This is what he has been reduced to. Ever since he spectacularly failed to secure our Steelclaw-Pack a coveted position in the elite Zenith-Circle, he has been a man possessed. He wanted that status, that untouchable power among the metropolitan packs, more than anything. When the Zenith-Circle rejected him, the rejection poisoned his mind. He started taking reckless gambles, borrowing from dangerous wolves, and now he is drowning in insurmountable debt.

Instead of facing his failures like an Alpha, he chooses to vent his inadequacies on me. The relentless physical abuse started months ago. The blatant infidelity followed shortly after. The female omegas in the pack house no longer look at me with respect; they look at me with pity, and sometimes, smug triumph, knowing they share a bed with my husband.

My cheek throbs, radiating a hot, pulsing pain that matches the blistering burn on my lap. My skin aches from weeks of hidden bruises. My heart is a graveyard of broken promises, buried beneath the weight of vows he spoke to my father and shattered without a second thought. I stare at the man standing over me, breathing heavily, his fists clenched at his sides. I have finally endured enough. The fear that usually paralyzes me is gone, replaced by a cold, numbing resolve. Today, I am resolutely prepared to walk away from this living hell. I will not shed another tear for a man who views me as a punching bag.

The heavy oak door of the study swings open. Kaelar, Voktor’s Beta, steps into the room. He does not even glance at me bleeding on the floor among the broken teacup. He steps forward and coldly shoves a stack of thick, unforgiving divorce documents onto the polished mahogany desk.

"Sign these," Kaelar commands, his voice flat, devoid of the respect he used to show his Luna.

I slowly push myself up from the floor, my legs trembling. The burn on my lap stings with every movement, but I force myself to stand tall. I walk over to the mahogany desk. I look down at the papers bearing the seal of the Syndicate-of-Bonds. Voktor’s signature is already slashed across the bottom line. He wants this just as much as I do.

My fingers tremble uncontrollably as I reach out. I force myself to grip the heavy fountain pen. I press the nib against the thick parchment and scrawl my signature next to his. The scratch of the nib against the paper echoes in the quiet room like a death knell.

I drop the pen. A heavy wave of finality washes over me. For a fleeting heartbeat, I experience a brief moment of hollow relief. It is over. The beatings, the cheating, the endless humiliation—it is finally done.

But before my mind can fully process the severance, Voktor steps forward. He raises his hand, demanding absolute silence. The smug cruelty returns to his eyes.

"I, Voktor-Union, Alpha of the Steelclaw-Pack, reject you, Vaelia, daughter of the late Thaldor, as my mate and Luna."

The cold, rehearsed words slice through the heavy silence of the study. The moment the rejection leaves his lips, an invisible blade plunges straight into my chest. The mate bond snaps. It does not just break; it tears flesh from bone within my soul. I gasp, clutching my chest as the agonizing pain rips through my core.

Deep inside me, my inner wolf, Zyra, lets out an agonizing, shattered howl. The sound reverberates through my skull, a sound of pure, unadulterated devastation. She claws blindly at the void where Voktor’s presence used to reside, finding nothing but empty air. Then, unable to bear the trauma, she violently withdraws. She shrinks back, retreating into a dark, hollow pit of silence within my mind. I reach out for her, desperate for her strength, but there is only a vast, empty void.

I sway on my feet, feeling lightheaded and sick. Mustering the last shreds of my dignity, I lift my chin and lock eyes with the man who just destroyed me.

"I will pack my belongings and leave the Pack house immediately," I demand, my voice remarkably steady despite the storm raging inside my chest.

Voktor’s grin vanishes. His eyes darken with a sickening, predatory gleam. He tilts his head, watching me like a hawk cornering a wounded rabbit.

"No, Vaelia. You are not going anywhere," he says softly. "I may have divorced you, but I own you."

"What are you talking about?" I demand, my pulse spiking. "I signed the papers. I am no longer your mate."

Before I can take another step, heavy boots sound in the hallway. Two thick-necked Gammas step into the room. They cross their massive arms, their broad frames entirely blocking the exit. The only way out of the study is sealed. Panic, cold and sharp, begins to claw its way up my throat.

Voktor leans against the mahogany desk, maliciously unveiling his vile, calculated arrangement. "I owe a staggering amount of debt, Vaelia. More than this pack can generate in a decade. But one of my creditors happens to be looking for something very specific. I am not setting you free. I am selling you to Alpha Zarek of the Bloodwrath-Pack to clear my massive, crippling debts."

The name hits me like a physical blow. The air in my lungs vanishes.

Alpha Zarek.

Every wolf in the territories knows of the Bloodwrath-Pack. They are the domain of the Pyrehowl-Bloodline. Those wolves are terrifyingly revered across the territories for their lethal, unyielding command over fire. They are monsters of myth walking in the modern age, capable of incinerating flesh and bone with a single bite. They control the criminal underworld, the monuments, the very ground of the city. Alpha Zarek is a ruthless warlord who leaves a trail of ash and scorched earth wherever he treads.

"Zarek is willing to wipe out my debts in exchange for a pristine Briarwild-Wolf," Voktor continues, his tone sickeningly conversational. "You see, he is looking for a female with your exact genetics. The extremely rare European bloodline you inherited from your deceased mother. You are a commodity, Vaelia. And your price just bought my freedom."

"You cannot do this!" I scream, the reality of his betrayal crashing over me. "I am not property! You cannot sell me like livestock!"

"I already have," Voktor snaps.

Through blinding, hot tears, my legs finally give out. I drop to my knees. The shards of broken porcelain bite into my bare skin, but I do not care. I look up at the man I once gave my life to, desperately begging him.

"Please, Voktor. Please don't do this. Remember the promise you made to my father. You swore sacred vows to protect me! Please, do not hand me over to him!"

Voktor merely scoffs. He looks down at me with cold indifference. He steps forward and kicks my reaching hand away, his boot striking my knuckles hard enough to bruise.

"Take her," Voktor orders, not looking at me again.

The Gammas surge forward. Large, rough hands latch onto my arms, hauling me up from the floor. I kick, I thrash, I scream his name, but they drag me out of the study, down the long hallways of the pack house, and out into the harsh daylight.

Three agonizing hours later, the nightmare continues.

The three-hour journey in the back of the transport vehicle is a blur of physical ache and suffocating dread. Wedged between the two Gammas, I stare blankly at the floorboards, my mind spinning with terrifying rumors of the Bloodwrath-Pack. The burn on my lap throbs with a dull, persistent ache. My cheek is swollen. Zyra remains buried in that dark, hollow pit, leaving me entirely alone to face the warlord of fire.

The heavy SUV violently jerks to a halt, throwing me forward against the heavy mesh partition. The doors are thrown open. Rough hands grab my arms, brutally dragging me out into the blinding sunlight.

I blink, struggling to adjust to the glare, and gasp. We are no longer in the familiar pine forests of the Steelclaw territory. I am standing inside the towering, heavily fortified, stone-walled grounds of the Bloodwrath-Pack. Massive stone watchtowers scrape the sky. Heavily armed guards wearing dark military fatigues patrol the battlements. The air here smells different—heavy, metallic, tinged with the faint, sharp scent of woodsmoke and ash.

Kaelar tightens his grip on my left arm, his claws pressing a warning into my skin. Voktor walks ahead of us, straightening his jacket as we approach a massive set of reinforced iron doors at the center of the courtyard.

The doors groan open. A figure steps out into the daylight.

Voktor presents me to Alpha Zarek. I stop breathing.

Zarek is a towering, intimidating mountain of a man. He stands easily over six-and-a-half feet tall, clad in dark, tactical clothing that clings to a chest broad enough to block out the sun. His face looks as though it was carved from granite—harsh angles, a strong, unyielding jaw, and razor-sharp high cheekbones that cast severe shadows across his skin. His piercing silver eyes lock onto our group, radiating a ruthless, military precision. There is no warmth in his gaze, only a cold, calculating lethality.

Just from his sheer proximity, the ambient temperature in the courtyard seems to rise. The air grows heavy, pressing against my skin like a physical weight. The heat radiating from his massive frame is suffocating.

"This is her? The Briarwild offspring?" Zarek’s dark, gravelly voice rumbles. The sound vibrates through the stone floor beneath my feet, sending a tremor up my calves.

Voktor eagerly steps forward, bowing his head slightly in an excessive show of submission. "Yes, Alpha Zarek. She carries the pure Briarwild bloodline from her mother."

Then, Voktor deceitfully adds a poisoned lie. He puffs out his chest, loudly proclaiming for all the Bloodwrath guards to hear. "I must inform you, I divorced her this morning. She is a filthy cheater who slept around with other males in my pack. I stripped her of her title as Luna. But her bloodline remains pure for your purposes."

My eyes widen in horror. The injustice of the lie burns through my veins like acid. He beat me, he cheated on me, he sold me, and now he is destroying my reputation in front of a lethal warlord.

"You liar!" I try to scream, lunging forward.

I am instantly silenced by Kaelar. The Beta’s sharp claws dig painfully into the tender flesh of my arm, piercing the skin. Tiny beads of warm blood well up, trickling down my bicep. The pain shoots up my shoulder, forcing a choked gasp from my throat. I look around at the impassive faces of the Bloodwrath guards, at Voktor’s smug smirk, at Kaelar’s cruel grip.

I realize with crushing despair that no one is coming to save me from this slander. No one cares about the truth. I am alone in a fortress of monsters.

Zarek does not blink. His piercing silver eyes shift from Voktor to me, analyzing my bruised cheek, my torn, tea-stained dress, and the blood running down my arm.

"I'll check for myself," Zarek murmurs.

His massive boots step closer. He closes the distance between us in two terrifying strides. The ambient heat spikes dramatically. The smell of smoke and raw, wild power envelops me. He reaches out toward my face.

Driven by pure, blinding desperation and a primal survival instinct, my body moves on its own. I will not let this monster burn me. I will not be a captive breeding mare.

I twist violently against Kaelar’s grip, my right hand aggressively snatching the hunting knife resting in the Beta’s leather belt. The steel slides out of the sheath with a sharp hiss. I plant my feet, pivot, and violently hurl the blade directly at Zarek’s broad chest.

It is a perfect throw. The blade spins through the air, aimed straight for his heart.

Without even blinking, Zarek raises a massive hand. He swats the deadly steel blade away as if it were a mere, buzzing annoyance. The heavy knife deflects off his knuckles with a loud clang and clatters harmlessly against the stone paving yards away.

Before I can even take a breath, before my brain can process that my attack failed, his enormous hand shoots out with lightning speed. His long, calloused fingers rigidly wrap around my jaw, locking my face in place with the unstoppable force of a steel vice.

He yanks me forward, crashing my body against the hard wall of his chest. He tilts my head back, forcefully exposing my throat to the open air. I see the flash of his elongated fangs.

He ruthlessly sinks his sharp teeth directly into the fragile flesh of my neck.

I squeeze my eyes shut. I brace my body for a fiery, agonizing death. I wait for the legendary Pyrehowl fire to scorch my veins, to turn my blood to ash, to burn me from the inside out.

Instead, a strange, intoxicating, and delicious heat blooms directly in the center of my chest.

It does not burn. It ignites. The warmth spreads outward in slow, heavy, electric waves of raw desire. The sensation crashes through my nervous system, overwhelming my senses. The heat surges downward, heavy and throbbing, and pools deep and wet between my legs.

A shocking shiver races down my spine. My breath hitches into a ragged gasp. My knees go instantly weak, my entire body melting against his solid frame as my core clenches in intense, undeniable arousal.

When he finally pulls his teeth free, the air rushes back into my lungs. His rigid grip on my jaw slowly loosens, his long fingers trailing down my neck to rest against my racing pulse.

I open my eyes, gasping for air, and look up into his face.

The cold silver in his eyes is gone. The pale color rapidly bleeds into a deep, endless obsidian. Within that black void, the irises are intricately threaded with living, molten gold that swirls and pulses with ancient magic.

He stares down at me, his chest heaving.

"Mate."

The word falls from his lips not as a realization, but like an inescapable, heavy command.
