My heart raced in my chest, and I could basically hear it beat. My eyes were shut tightly, and my body coiled in tension.

The groans and cries of the man who’d been standing in front of me made me realize I wasn’t dead yet — and maybe that was a good thing.

For a second there, I thought my life had ended.

I peeled my eyes open slowly and stared down at the man who’d fallen on the floor
