Neon Lights and Gunfire

I spent the endless, agonizing hours leading up to our departure locked inside my sprawling bedroom, pacing the hardwood floors. Gemma told me to be ready by ten, and I fully intended to use this rare escape from the suffocating castle walls for one specific purpose. I was going to test my silent bodyguard. I didn't care about impressing the random club-goers tonight. My sole target was Magnus, and I was determined to push his ironclad, emotionless composure right to its breaking point.

I skipped the tedious, elaborate glamour routines my father usually ordered his staff to perform on me. I swiped a sharp, dangerous wing of black eyeliner across my lids and applied a thick coat of mascara to make my eyes pop. I left my long hair loose, letting the raven-colored waves cascade down my bare shoulders in a wild, untamed mess.

Then came the ultimate weapon. The dress.

I pulled the sheer black lace fabric off the hanger and shimmied it over my body. The material was scandalously thin, designed to cling to every single curve like a second skin. The plunging neckline dipped low, leaving the deep, heavy swell of my breasts on prominent display, while the hemline stopped dangerously high on my thighs. It left nothing to the imagination. I strapped on a pair of towering black stilettos, forcing my calves to flex and my posture to straighten.

'We look lethal,' Zoya purred in my mind, my inner wolf practically preening at our reflection in the full-length mirror.

'Let's see him try to keep that bored, empty stare now,' I replied, a wicked smirk playing on my glossy lips.

I stepped out of the steamy bathroom, the humid air trailing behind me, and immediately locked eyes with my massive bodyguard. Magnus leaned casually against the bedroom wall. He wore his signature tactical gear: a tight, long-sleeve charcoal shirt, dark cargo pants, and black leather gloves. The dark cloth mask concealed the lower half of his face, but his eyes gave him away instantly.

The moment his gaze landed on my sheer dress, his stoic facade shattered. His dark, heavy stare roamed the tight fit of the lace. I stood my ground, feeling a phantom, scorching touch as his eyes dragged down the exposed skin of my chest, traced the dip of my waist, and lingered hungrily on my bare legs. Rapidly swirling, luminescent golden flecks overtook his obsidian irises. The wolf inside him was fighting its way to the surface, captivated by the massive temptation I presented.

His dangerously dominant Lycan aura roared to brutal life. A suffocating, heavy wave of pure heat washed over me, crashing into my chest and sending a sharp, liquid thrill straight down my spine. Instead of cowering under the terrifying pressure of his dominance, Zoya howled in feral excitement. The thick energy pooled low between my thighs, making my core throb and my breath hitch in my throat.

I took a slow, deliberate step toward him. "Why don't you let him come out and play?" I pouted softly, dropping my voice into a husky, seductive register that pushed the boundaries of this addictive game we played.

A feral, terrifying warning growl rumbled from the depths of his massive chest. The low vibration rattled the air between us, sending another jolt of raw arousal straight to my core.

"Enough," he rasped. His guttural voice was rough, thick with a heavy accent that made my knees weak. He forced himself to take a physical step back, putting necessary distance between us. His broad shoulders bunched under his shirt. Even behind the mask, I could see his sharp jaw clenching and unclenching as he forced his glowing golden eyes to return to their cold, luminescent obsidian glare.

Before I could taunt him further, Gemma burst out of my closet wearing a tight rose-colored dress, acting oblivious to the thick, sexually charged tension suffocating the bedroom. "Ready, princess?" she chirped.

Twenty minutes later, I regretted getting into the passenger seat of Gemma's sedan. She peeled out of the estate and drove recklessly, swerving around sharp corners and blasting through yellow lights, taking us far beyond the familiar borders of our territory.

"Keep your eyes on the damn road, Gemma!" I yelled, gripping the door handle until my knuckles turned white as she casually checked a text message.

"I live for the danger," she scoffed, tossing her phone onto the dashboard.

I glanced in the rearview mirror. Magnus sat rigid in the backseat, his dark eyes locked on me. He looked eerie and calm, but I knew he was silently plotting how to murder Gemma if she crashed the car into a ditch.

She finally slammed the brakes outside a massive building bathed in blinding, flashing neon lights. A line of rowdy people wrapped around the cracked pavement, and the deafening throb of bass rattled the sedan's windows.

I stared at the shady, run-down exterior. "Gemma? This is an underground nightclub."

"I may have tweaked the truth," she smirked, killing the engine. "You need to experience real life. Just try it."

Deep panic spiked in my chest. If my Alpha father discovered I had snuck into an illegal, unapproved club surrounded by unpredictable civilians and rogues, he would lose his mind and lock me away.

I turned to Magnus as we stepped onto the cold concrete. He loomed under a flickering streetlamp, his imposing frame casting a long, intimidating shadow. "Magnus, please. You have to keep this location a secret from my Dad."

He let out a harsh, irritable huff, rolling his dark eyes at my reckless, rule-breaking behavior. But after a tense second, he silently nodded.

"Thank you," I breathed out, though another wave of anxiety hit me. "But everyone inside is going to recognize me. My face is plastered all over the elite packs."

Magnus didn't say a word. He reached into his leather jacket pocket, smoothly pulled out a spare, pitch-black cloth mask, and handed it directly to me.

I stared at the dark fabric, a smug, thrilling rush of satisfaction hitting my system. I carefully slipped it over the lower half of my face. It smelled faintly of his spicy, cedar scent. Matching his mysterious, masked aesthetic made me feel untouchable.

Gemma bribed the bouncer, and we pushed our way inside.

The massive club reeked of stale sweat, cheap alcohol, and heavy perfume, thick enough to coat my throat. Multicolored neon lights slashed through the dark, flashing in time with the deafening, bone-rattling pounding bass directly on the packed dance floor. I let the chaotic energy swallow me whole, dragging Gemma into the crushing sea of bodies.

I moved my hips to the heavy rhythm, blissfully losing myself in the blinding lights. But my favorite part of the chaotic night rapidly became watching Magnus. He stood at the edge of the crowd like a lethal reaper. Every single time some arrogant, drunken guy dared to reach out to touch my swaying hips, Magnus would step out of the shadows. He didn't even have to throw a punch. A single, murderous glare from his dark eyes and the silent, aggressive roll of his broad shoulders sent every single creep scrambling away in pure terror.

The carefree, thrilling night shattered without warning.

The song shifted, the crowd surged, and suddenly Gemma grabbed my bare arm. Her nails dug painfully into my skin. I spun around, ready to snap at her, until I saw her pale face. Her eyes were wide with sheer panic.

"Cordelia," she gasped frantically over the blaring techno music. "There's these men. They know who you are. They're looking for you."

Pure, icy fear spiked my adrenaline, instantly sobering me. The mask hadn't been enough. "Where?" I demanded.

I scanned the massive, chaotic crowd. Through the frantic strobe lights, I locked eyes with a strange, heavily scarred man shoving his way through the dancers. He didn't look like a drunk patron. He moved with cold, calculated purpose.

He stopped. His arm raised. The flashing neon light caught the lethal, metallic glint of a weapon aimed directly at my face.

"Get down!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

I grabbed Gemma’s shoulder, yanking her to the sticky floor exactly as a deafening gunshot pierced through the heavy music.

The upbeat bassline instantly morphed into a nightmare. Chaotic panic erupted. Screams ripped through the club, scattering the crowd in every direction. Bodies slammed into each other, creating a frantic stampede toward the front entrance. Glass shattered as people trampled over the bars and tables.

'We have to get them away from these people!' Zoya’s primal voice urgently commanded in my head, determined to forcefully lead the lethal danger away from the hundreds of innocent bystanders.

I scrambled frantically away from the shooter. I shoved past the screaming, sweating bodies, sprinting directly toward the dark back of the club. My eyes locked onto the glowing red exit sign. I threw my weight against the heavy metal emergency exit, bursting through the door and stumbling directly into the night.

I hit the wet pavement. The pitch-black alleyway smelled of rotting garbage and stale, pungent piss. I caught my balance and sprinted, hoping to lose them in the dark, twisting streets of the city.

But my desperate escape was brutally cut short.

I hit a dead end. A cold, rusted chain-link fence blocked my path, towering over my head. I spun around, panting heavily, only to find the sole entrance to the alley blocked.

Four massive, shaggy-haired, lethal figures stepped out from the shadows, cornering me against the fence. The dim moonlight caught the cruel smirks on their faces and the heavy weapons gripped tightly in their hands.

There was no way I could ever fight off multiple armed men on my own. And if they were fully trained Lycans, I was going to be slaughtered in this filthy alley.

"Zoya, what do I do?" I asked frantically, my trembling voice tinged with genuine fear.

'We fight, Cordelia,' my wolf fiercely replied, her spirit refusing to submit to the executioners standing before us. 'Together.'

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, unleashing the heavy, suffocating aura of pure power I usually kept locked away, letting it surge around me in a physical wave. I viscerally felt the immense, lethal strength of my elite Alpha King bloodline rushing through my veins, hot and demanding. I tensed my entire body, curling my hands into tight fists, preparing to strike the first man who lunged.

If those guns held lethal wolfsbane bullets, I was facing an excruciatingly painful, immediate death. My heart slammed against my ribs as the four men raised their weapons.

In that terrifying, potentially final moment of my life, staring down the dark barrel of a gun, the very last thought that raced through my mind wasn't my father or the kingdom.

It was the mysterious, masked face of Magnus.
