The Art of Temptation

I set my plan into motion the second the heavy oak door clicked shut between our adjoining rooms.

The lingering scent of mint and apples still hung in the air, a ghost of his presence that made my skin prickle. Anger had failed to break his iron-clad control. Demanding answers had gotten me a door slammed in my face. But that split-second reaction when I crossed his physical boundary gave me the exact blueprint I needed.

I walked over to my dresser, pulling the heavy wooden drawers open. My fingers skimmed past the oversized t-shirts and flannel pajama pants I usually favored. Tonight called for specific artillery. I bypassed the modest cotton and pulled out a pair of sheer, black lace panties. The fabric was practically translucent, the intricate floral pattern doing nothing to hide the skin beneath. Next, I grabbed a tight, ribbed cotton tank top, one that had shrunk in the wash and barely reached my navel.

*This is going to be fun,* Zoya purred in the back of my mind. The anticipation radiating from my wolf made my pulse thrum a heavy beat against my throat.

I carried the garments into the bathroom and set them on the edge of the marble sink. Reaching into the glass shower stall, I cranked the handle all the way to the left, letting the hot water run until thick steam began to billow over the top of the glass doors. I stripped off my clothes, letting them fall in a careless heap on the floor, and stepped into the scalding spray.

The heat felt good. It seeped into my tense muscles, washing away the lingering exhaustion from the disastrous family dinner and the argument with my father. I tipped my head back, letting the water cascade down my dark hair, plastering the long ravens strands to my back. I took my time, allowing the steam to fill the confined space, fogging up the large mirror over the vanity.

Stepping out of the shower, I grabbed a small, white towel from the rack. It was far too small for my frame, but that served my purpose. I wrapped it around my body, tucking the end over my breasts. The terrycloth barely covered my chest, pushing my breasts upward, the lower hem ending dangerously high on my upper thighs.

I stood in front of the sink, wiping a circle of condensation from the mirror to look at my reflection. My porcelain skin was flushed pink from the heat, my green eyes bright with a dangerous, reckless determination.

My gaze dropped to the heavy glass tumbler sitting on the edge of the vanity. It held my toothbrushes.

*Do it,* Zoya urged, a dark thrill lacing her tone.

I took a deep breath, steeling my nerves. I lifted my hand and knocked the glass cup off the edge.

It hit the hard tile floor with a loud, shattering crash that echoed like a gunshot in the tiled room. Jagged shards of thick glass exploded across the white floor.

I waited a heartbeat. The adjoining door in the bedroom didn't open.

"Shit," I mumbled aloud, feigning clumsiness in case he was listening.

I took a step forward, aiming my bare foot directly over the largest, sharpest shard of glass. I forced my weight down.

The pain was immediate and sharp. A sharp hiss escaped my lips as the jagged edge pierced the tender flesh of my arch, lodging itself deep into my foot. I stumbled backward, genuinely losing my balance, and caught myself against the edge of the sink.

Bright crimson blood welled up around the glass, dripping down the side of my foot and pooling onto the pristine white tile. The stark contrast of the red against the white was jarring.

Before I could even process the throbbing sting, the bathroom door splintered inward.

The wood cracked with a deafening groan as the hinges gave way. The heavy door crashed against the interior wall, raining splinters over the tile.

Magnus lunged into the small room. He moved with a terrifying, predatory speed, dropping into a low crouch the second he cleared the threshold. His broad shoulders blocked the doorway, his head snapping from side to side as he scanned every corner of the room for a lethal threat.

He wore a dark, sleeveless tank top and a pair of loose gray sweatpants. His usual tailored suits were gone, revealing the thick, corded muscles of his arms and the dark ink of tattoos trailing up his biceps. But his face remained hidden behind that infuriating black mask, and his hands were still encased in those dark leather gloves.

When his aggressive sweep of the bathroom yielded no assassins, his gaze snapped to me.

His eyes were wild, the obsidian depths churning with large, glowing golden flecks. His inner wolf was right at the surface, driven by the scent of my blood.

*Well, that got his attention,* Zoya remarked dryly, a smug satisfaction rolling through our shared bond.

Magnus straightened up, the golden rings in his eyes dimming slightly as his gaze dropped to the floor. He tracked the trail of red drops from the sink down to my foot.

I shivered, partly from the chill air rushing in from the bedroom, and partly from the sheer, overwhelming presence he brought into the small space. I was standing on one leg, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the edge of the sink with one hand, using my other hand to hold the tiny, damp towel closed over my chest.

He didn't say a word. He closed the distance between us in two long strides, his heavy boots crunching over the broken glass.

I gasped as his hands gripped my waist. The thick leather of his gloves provided a stark, rough contrast against my bare, damp skin. He lifted me off the floor as if I weighed nothing, his grip firm and unyielding. The heat of his palms seeped right through the leather, sending a flush of warmth racing up my spine.

He turned and set me down gently on the closed lid of the toilet.

I kept my grip tight on the towel, watching him as he turned back to the vanity. He ignored the glass under his boots, pulling open the bottom cabinet and retrieving a white plastic first aid kit.

He turned back to me, popping the latches on the box.

I remembered my role. I was supposed to be the irritated, independent girl he had pissed off just twenty minutes ago. I reached out, aiming to snatch the kit from his grasp.

"I can do it myself," I grumbled, jutting my chin out in defiance.

His gloved hand shot up, smacking my hand away with a swift, firm strike. It didn't hurt, but the casual dismissal of my attempt sent a spike of irritation through me.

He leaned over me, his broad chest blocking out the light from the vanity.

"Sit."

The single word rolled from his throat, a deep, guttural rumble laced with a heavy, thick accent. The sheer dominance packed into those three letters slammed into me like a physical weight. It left zero room for argument. The command bypassed my rational brain and spoke directly to the primal instincts embedded in my blood.

*Oh, we like that,* Zoya purred, her presence expanding in my chest, eager to exploit this proximity. *Make him look. Make him see what he's protecting.*

I clamped my mouth shut, letting my hand fall back to my lap. I sat quiet, my eyes tracking his every movement.

Magnus crouched in front of me, his knees pressing against my bare shins. The small confines of the bathroom forced us flush together. The scent of mint and apples wrapped around me, thicker and more intoxicating than before.

He pulled a pair of metal tweezers from the kit.

His head tilted up, his dark eyes locking onto mine. The golden flecks were swirling again, a chaotic storm trapped within the obsidian. He didn't look away as he brought the tweezers to the sole of my foot.

I squeezed my eyes shut for a second when I felt the cold metal pinch my flesh. A sharp squeak of pain left my lips as he pulled the jagged glass shard free. Blood rushed faster from the open wound, dripping onto his gloved fingers, but he didn't flinch.

His eyes remained rigidly fixed on my face. It was a staring contest I refused to lose. I kept my gaze locked on his, my breath hitching as he reached for a brown bottle in the kit.

He uncapped the rubbing alcohol and poured it directly over the open cut.

The burn was instantaneous and white-hot. I sucked in a sharp breath through my teeth, my nails digging into the edge of the toilet seat. The wound was deeper than I anticipated, the torn flesh stinging with a vicious bite.

Magnus set the bottle aside and reached for a roll of white gauze.

I shot my hand out, grabbing his thick wrist before he could unroll the bandage.

"Stop," I breathed out, my voice unsteady.

He paused, the golden rings in his eyes flashing with a silent question.

"Let me get dressed first," I insisted, forcing a stubborn edge into my tone. "You can wrap it out in the bedroom. I don't want to sit in this cramped bathroom anymore."

He stared at me for a long, heavy moment. The muscle in his jaw flexed beneath the dark fabric of his mask. Without a word, he gave a single, curt nod. He stood up, towering over me for a brief second, before turning on his heel and walking out of the bathroom.

I waited until I heard his boots come to a stop on the bedroom carpet.

A wicked smirk curled my lips as I looked at the splintered door frame. Step one was complete. He cared enough to break a door down. Now it was time to test the limits of that stoic professionalism.

I stood up, keeping my weight off my injured foot, and let the damp towel drop to the floor. It landed with a soft thud over the bloody shards of glass.

I reached for the clothes I had left on the counter. I slipped the black lace panties up my legs. The thin material clung to my curves, the sheer fabric leaving the dark triangle of hair and the pale skin of my hips in full view. The back of the underwear offered even less coverage, the lace riding up and leaving the bottom and sides of my cheeks entirely exposed.

Next came the tank top. I pulled the tight cotton over my head. The cool air of the room hit my chest, and without the restriction of a bra, my nipples hardened immediately, pressing visibly against the thin, ribbed material. The hem of the shirt stopped high on my torso, leaving a strip of bare skin above the waistband of the lace panties.

I took a deep breath, fighting the sudden swarm of nervous butterflies erupting in my stomach.

I faked a dramatic grimace, sucking air through my teeth as I hobbled out of the bathroom. I kept my bloody foot hovering above the carpet, leaning heavily on the doorframe as I stepped into the bedroom.

Magnus was standing near the foot of my massive bed, holding the white bandage. True to his infuriating, gentlemanly nature, he had turned his broad back to the bathroom door, granting me the privacy I had requested.

I limped toward the edge of the mattress.

"You don't seem like the type of guy to be afraid of a half-dressed girl," I taunted.

I fought to keep my voice smooth and mocking, masking the chaotic, quivering mess I was on the inside. His scent was everywhere, embedded in the sheets, lingering in the air, wrapping around my senses and making my head spin.

Magnus stood frozen for a fraction of a second. Then, he turned around.

He didn't flinch. He didn't gasp. He simply stood there, his arms falling to his sides, the roll of gauze tight in his fist. Above the dark rim of his mask, a single, dark eyebrow rose in silent, heavy judgment.

The sheer arrogance of his silent reprimand fueled the fire in my veins. I couldn't hide the triumphant smirk that broke across my face.

I stood near the edge of the bed, my posture straight despite the throbbing in my foot. The dim lighting of the bedroom cast shadows over the sheer lace clinging to my hips and the tight cotton outlining my breasts.

I stared into his eyes, boldly daring him. I wanted to see the beast. I wanted to challenge the overwhelming, primal Lycan dominance he carried in every step. He exuded a power that demanded submission, but tonight, I refused to bow.

"Look down, Magnus," I commanded softly.

The words left my mouth coated in pure, unadulterated temptation.

It was a dangerous psychological game. Taunting a predator of his caliber, a wolf that radiated such immense, lethal power, was akin to playing with a loaded gun. But a reckless sense of safety anchored me. Despite his size, despite the lethality in his movements, I knew in my bones he wouldn't hurt me. The few times his hands had graced my skin, his touch had been calculated, almost gentle.

*Smart girl,* Zoya cheered, her predatory instincts aligning perfectly with my own. *Push him. Make him crack.*

The silence stretched between us, thick and crackling with a static electric charge.

Then, he broke.

A molten heat bloomed in the center of my chest as Magnus finally gave in to the primal urge. His dark, luminescent eyes shifted from my face, beginning a slow, deliberate crawl down my throat.

The intensity of his gaze was a physical weight. It felt as though his gloved hands were tracing the path his eyes took. He stared at the swell of my breasts, his gaze lingering on the hard peaks pressing against the thin cotton. He mapped the curve of my waist, the dip of my navel, before his eyes dropped to the sheer black lace resting on my hips.

Satisfaction, rich and intoxicating, flooded my veins. My skin burned under the phantom heat of his inspection. He took in every inch of my exposed thighs, the long lines of my legs, down to my bloody foot.

He closed his eyes for a long, heavy second. A deep breath expanded his broad chest, testing the seams of his dark tank top.

When his heavy gaze finally snapped back up to meet mine, the stoic, composed bodyguard was gone.

The obsidian was swallowed by gold. Large, swirling rings of bright, predatory amber spun wildly in his eyes. The wolf was at the surface, pacing behind the cage of his ribs, staring at me with a raw, unchecked desire that made my breath catch in my throat.

"That wasn't so hard, was it?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave, heavy with a victorious smirk.

I dropped onto the edge of the soft mattress, the springs groaning slightly under my weight. I leaned back on my hands, kicking my injured foot out toward him.

The golden gaze remained locked on me. He took a slow step forward, the predator approaching the prey that had foolishly laid out the bait. He crouched down on the carpet in front of me, his massive frame dwarfing my outstretched leg.

He took my heel in the palm of his gloved hand.

I bit the inside of my cheek to stop from wincing as he pressed the edge of the white gauze to my arch. He began to wrap the bandage, his movements tight, meticulous, and practiced. He pulled the fabric firm, ensuring the wound was secured and the bleeding stopped.

As he worked, his gaze flickered up from my foot, clashing with mine once more.

For the second time that night, I found myself completely lost in the piercing, gold-flecked storm raging in his eyes. The tension between us was a physical entity, heavy and suffocating.

Without breaking eye contact, I parted my lips and slowly ran my pink tongue over my bottom lip, dragging the moisture across the sensitive skin.

Magnus’s hand twitched. The movement was minute, barely a fraction of a millimeter, but I felt the sudden, tightening grip of his fingers on my ankle.

Zoya’s thoughts exploded in my head, a barrage of graphic, sexually charged images flashing behind my eyes. She painted pictures of those leather gloves gripping my thighs, of that heavy, muscular chest pressing me down into the mattress, of those dark eyes watching me fall apart under his hands.

The images fueled the thick, unspoken electricity crackling between us. The air grew heavy, hard to breathe. We had done it. We had taken a hammer to his impenetrable armor and smashed a massive, visible crack right down the center. He wasn't a machine. He was a man, and he was struggling.

He finished the wrap, tucking the end of the white bandage under the layers to secure it. He didn't let go of my ankle right away. His thumb brushed over the uninjured skin of my heel, a fleeting, almost subconscious caress.

He stood up, his massive frame towering over the bed, the gold in his eyes battling the dark obsidian for control.

"Thank you, Magnus," I purred.

My voice was coated in a heavy, deliberate seduction.

I decided to leave him with one final, parting gift. I pulled my legs up onto the mattress and rolled over, turning onto my stomach. I arched my back slightly, deliberately angling my hips so my sheer, lace-covered bottom faced him directly. The thin material rode high, putting the curve of my cheeks on full display under the warm glow of the bedside lamp.

Keeping my movements agonizingly slow, I crawled across the massive expanse of the bed. I let my hips sway with every drag of my knees, feeling the heavy weight of his stare burning into my skin. I reached the pillows, grabbing the edge of the thick down comforter, and slipped my body beneath the heavy covers.

I settled onto the mattress, burying my face in the soft pillow.

Before I could even begin to turn my head around to catch a glimpse of his reaction, the sound of boots retreating hit the carpet.

The heavy wooden door separating our rooms slammed shut with a deafening, violent crack. The force of it rattled the frames hanging on my walls.

*Got him,* Zoya purred in my mind.

The sound of her smug, deeply satisfied voice slithered smoothly through my thoughts. I curled onto my side, pulling the blankets up to my chin.

A triumphant grin stretched across my face in the dark. The adrenaline still hummed in my veins, the phantom heat of his gaze still warming my skin. I closed my eyes, the image of his gold-flecked stare burned into the back of my eyelids.

I drifted off to sleep with that smug grin permanently plastered on my face. And for the very first time in over a year, I slept through the night without a single agonizing nightmare.
