The Crushing Blow

Marcella

Beta Gideon guides us down the sprawling, gilded corridors of the massive Alpha packhouse. Our footsteps sink deep into plush crimson carpets, muffling the chaotic chatter echoing from the floors below. My leg muscles burn with a bone-deep exhaustion, dragging with every step. When Gideon finally pushes open the thick oak door to our assigned guest room, the sheer opulence of the space steals the breath right from my lungs.

A colossal king-sized bed dominates the far wall, piled high with silk pillows and thick comforters. The walls feature a pristine off-white shade, perfectly contrasting with the deep red velvet curtains framing the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. A fleeting, naive spark of hope flickers in my chest. I stare at the mattress, imagining the soft support against my battered spine. Maybe, just for tonight, I get to sleep on a real bed.

My father’s harsh voice snuffs the hope out in a heartbeat.

"Vance, Jade, drop your bags," he barks. He tosses his own heavy leather duffel onto the pristine mattress, staking his claim. He turns his cold, disdainful glare toward me. "The three of us are taking the bed. You, mutt, find a patch of hard floor. Keep clear of the bathroom doors. If you get in our way and we step on you, it is your own damn problem. Do you understand?"

I swallow the bitter lump forming in my throat. I was stupid to think things would be different here. "Yes, sir."

"Good," he snaps. "While we take a luxurious afternoon nap, you unpack the luggage. Sort our suits. And meticulously press your sister's dress. I want not a single wrinkle on that silk. Then, stay out of sight."

I nod, sealing my lips shut. My father, Vance, and Jade stretch out across the vast expanse of the bed. They sigh in deep satisfaction as the soft mattresses yield to their weight. Within minutes, their breathing evens out into soft snores.

I drop to my knees on the floor. The plush carpet offers little comfort to my bruised joints. I unzip the heavy suitcases, my fingers trembling from pure exhaustion. I carry my father's and Vance's suits into the massive walk-in closet, ensuring the lapels sit flat. Then, I pull out Jade's elaborate ball gown.

For three agonizing hours, I stand over an ironing board in the corner of the room, working the hot steam over the elaborate fabric. My back screams in protest. The faint throb in my ribs serves as a constant, grinding reminder of my place in this family. By the time I finish pressing the dress, sweat coats the back of my neck. I fold my legs beneath me on a small patch of floor near the wall, praying for just a few minutes of rest.

A sharp gasp shatters the quiet room.

Jade bolts upright on the bed. Her eyes go wide as she stares at the digital clock resting on the bedside table. The time flashes a bright red. The grand ball starts in mere hours.

Panic twists her beautiful features into an ugly, furious sneer. She scrambles off the mattress, her bare feet hitting the floor with heavy thuds. She crosses the room in three long strides, looming over my crouched form.

"Why didn't you wake me up, you stupid bitch!" she screams. Her voice cracks like a whip, echoing off the high ceiling.

"I'm sorry, Jade. I didn't know I was supposed to—"

Before I can finish the apology, her hand winds back. Her palm cracks across my left cheek with staggering force. The impact snaps my head to the side. Fire erupts across my skin, a stinging heat that makes my eyes water instantly.

I brace for the second strike, raising my arms to shield my face.

"Jade, stop," my father commands, his tone sharp. He lunges forward off the bed, grabbing Jade by the wrist before she can land another blow.

For a split second, a confused sense of relief washes over me. He has never stopped her before. The baffled look on Jade's face shows she shares my exact thought. But the cold glint in his dark eyes reveals the grim truth. This intervention holds zero paternal care.

"Not the face, darling girl," he warns her. His voice drops into a smooth, dark cadence. "We are at the Alpha's ball. We cannot afford anyone seeing fresh marks on her skin that require uncomfortable explanations."

Jade freezes. The realization dawns on her face, and her twisted fury morphs into a wicked, knowing smile. She understands the assignment perfectly.

"You are right. Sorry, Daddy," she purrs, her voice sickeningly sweet.

She pivots back to me. The sweetness vanishes, replaced by pure malice. Her hands curl into tight, heavy fists.

She swings.

Her heavy fist connects with the left side of my ribcage. She targets the exact spot where the bones still remain fractured from her last tantrum weeks ago. A sickening crunch echoes in my ears. I scream, a raw sound that tears from my throat, but the noise dies as all the oxygen leaves my lungs in a rush.

I collapse onto the carpet, clutching my side. Every shallow gasp for air feels like swallowing jagged shards of broken glass.

"That is better," my father praises smoothly. "As long as there are no visible marks and she can walk for tonight, then have at it, daughter."

Jade kicks her pointed heel directly into my stomach, driving the breath out of me all over again. Another fist drops onto my shoulder. The pain is a blinding white flash. I writhe on the floor, heaving and suffocating in absolute agony. Above me, the sound of cruel laughter rings out. My father, Vance, and Jade stand over my pathetic state, chuckling casually. They step around my twitching body and stroll out of the room to get pampered at the packhouse spa.

"Come on, Marcy. Get up," Vespi, my wolf, whimpers in my mind. She pushes against my fading consciousness, lending me whatever meager strength she possesses.

I press my palms flat against the carpet, pushing my upper body up. Fire shoots down my torso. The newly re-broken ribs shift, grinding against tender tissue. I bite down on my lower lip so hard I taste copper blood, swallowing the groan threatening to spill out.

A soft, urgent knock sounds at the bedroom door.

I freeze. I drag my sleeve across my sweaty forehead, slap a fake smile onto my lips, and limp toward the door. I twist the heavy brass handle. Seraphina slips into the hostile room before I even fully open it, pushing the door shut behind her.

Her gaze drops to my hunched posture, the unnatural way I hold my side, and the glaring red handprint blooming across my pale cheek. Deep worry floods her features.

"Oh, Marcella," she cries softly. She steps closer but keeps her hands hovering, terrified of causing me more pain.

"I am okay," I force the breathless words out.

It is a painful lie. But I have to say them. I have to cling desperately to the only beacon of hope keeping me sane. If I acknowledge the sheer agony ravaging my chest right now, I will break down, and I cannot afford to lose my nerve.

Seraphina shakes her head, her dark eyes shining with unshed tears. "I know that is a lie. I saw them leaving, so I came to check on you. To make sure you are ready for tonight. I wanted to make sure you hadn't changed your mind."

I stare into her worried face. The pain in my ribs only fuels my resolve.

"No, I haven't changed my mind," I tell her firmly, my voice steadying despite the ragged breaths. "I am all in. Are you? I would far rather die in the freezing forest than endure another single day with them."

Seraphina nods eagerly, her shoulders dropping slightly in relief. "I am in."

Our hushed, urgent conversation is abruptly cut short. Heavy, thudding footsteps approach the hallway outside.

Seraphina's eyes go wide. She quickly makes her excuses and slips out the door just seconds before the handle turns from the outside.

My father and Vance stride aggressively into the room. My father spots me leaning heavily against the wall and sneers in disgust.

"Oi, mutt," he barks, tossing a plastic garment bag at my feet. "Your sister went to have her hair and nails done. You will take her dress to her once she finishes. And for the love of the Goddess, make your ass presentable for tonight. I know it is an almost impossible task, but try not to embarrass me."

"Yes, sir," I whisper.

I grab the garment bag and drag myself into the lavish bathroom, locking the heavy door behind me. The moment the lock clicks into place, silent, heavy sobs rack my chest. Each cry twists the broken ribs, punishing me with unbearable physical pain. I lean over the cold marble sink, clutching the edges until my knuckles turn stark white.

I strip off my sweat-soaked clothes, hissing through my teeth as the fabric grazes my bruised side. I pull Jade's discarded, hand-me-down white dress from the bag. Because I am dangerously thin, the bodice hangs off my fragile frame, exposing far more of my chest than I like. My hands shake as I dig safety pins out of my pocket. I meticulously pin the excess fabric at the back, pulling the silk tight so it stops sagging off my shoulders.

Next comes the makeup. I coat my left cheek in thick layers of basic foundation, carefully blending the powder until the fading red slap mark vanishes into a pale shadow. I slip my feet into a pair of Jade's badly scuffed white heels, adjusting the hem of the dress to hide the worn-out toes.

I stare at my reflection in the massive mirror. The humiliating contrast is stark. I am a battered, bruised shadow wrapped in oversized, pinned clothing, preparing to attend a grand Alpha ball.

"Let's go!" my father bellows from the bedroom.

I jump, grabbing the doorknob and hurrying out. We descend the grand staircase and step out into the crisp evening air.

The beautifully decorated outdoor ball is spectacular. Thousands of golden fairy lights drape across the ancient oak trees, casting a warm glow over the manicured lawns. The scent of roasted meats and expensive champagne fills the night air.

I strictly follow the unspoken rules of my abuse. I remain a silent, invisible shadow. I trail two steps behind my father, Vance, and Jade as they plunge into the dense crowd. My father eagerly networks with visiting Alphas, laughing loudly. Jade twirls her hair, batting her eyelashes at the affluent guests. I keep my head bowed, ignoring the throbbing pain radiating from my ribs.

Amidst the loud chatter and the pulsing beat of the music, Vespi jolts awake in my mind.

She paces back and forth, her claws scraping against my mental walls. She grows confusingly restless.

"You okay, Ves?" I ask her, my own anxiety spiking at her sudden shift in behavior.

She whines in my head, a low, drawn-out sound. "I don't know, Marcy. Something feels profoundly different."

I frown, lifting my head to scan the nearby tables. Before I can even form a thought to question her warning, a scent hits me.

An intoxicating, breathtaking, heavy scent of warm cinnamon floods my senses. It bypasses my rational brain, sinking straight into my marrow. My knees buckle slightly. The sheer power of the fragrance makes my head spin.

"Mate is here!" Vespi growls, her voice vibrating with pure joy.

My wolf is elated. But sheer, paralyzing terror grips my heart in an icy vice.

No. Not here. Not now. I am escaping into the woods tonight. A mate means someone else to control me. Someone who will look at my broken, battered body, see the weak Omega my family created, and reject me. Or worse, keep me as another punching bag.

My family turns a corner, heading toward our assigned table near the edge of the dance floor. I stumble after them.

The potent scent hits me even harder, nearly knocking me off my feet. It acts as a physical force, wrapping around my throat, pulling me forward. The cinnamon burns in my nose, rich and undeniable.

I frantically scan the dense crowd, my wide eyes darting past silk dresses and tailored jackets.

Then, my gaze zeroes in on a towering, broad-shouldered man standing just a few feet away.

He possesses massive shoulders wrapped in a dark suit that strains against the thick muscles of his chest. The golden light catches the sharp, ruthless angles of his jaw.

Before my exhausted brain can process the monumental moment, the man turns his head.

He looks directly into my eyes.

Time grinds to a devastating halt. The music fades. The chatter vanishes. It is just him, staring down at my pinned, borrowed dress, my pale skin, the basic makeup hiding the fresh abuse.

For one fleeting, impossible second, I wait for the fated pull to soften the hard lines of his face. I wait for the warmth Vespi promised.

Instead, sheer panic crosses his features. His chest heaves. A look of horror flashes in his dark eyes.

He takes a step back, shaking his head. His lips part, and he mutters the devastating words, loud enough to pierce the space between us.

"Fuck no!"

Without a second glance, he turns on his heel. His broad shoulders shove past the crowd. He sprints away into the shadows.

My chest caves in. The air leaves my lungs, not from newly re-broken ribs, but from a shattered soul. My true mate runs away from me.
