The Betrayal
[POV Elara]
The heavy oak front door clicked shut, sealing away the hum of the Vextons' departing cars. The silence that followed lasted only a second before the reality of my impending nightmare crushed the air from my lungs. My knees buckled beneath me. I collapsed onto the cold marble floor of the foyer, the tears I had fought so hard to suppress spilling over my lashes. Sobs tore through my chest, echoing in the vast, empty space.
"Oh, spare us the pathetic waterworks," Tinsley sneered. She stepped into my line of sight, crossing her arms over her chest. Her lips curled into a vicious smirk, her eyes gleaming with undisguised malice. "You are only faking it. You are marrying into the richest, most powerful family on earth tomorrow. You should be kissing the ground we walk on for granting you this opportunity instead of putting on this tragic act."
I dragged myself up from the floor, wiping my wet cheeks with the back of my hand. My body ached from the tension. I had no energy left to entertain her venom or defend myself against her cruel jabs.
"Where do you think you are going?" Aunt Rowena snapped, her voice cutting through the hall like a whip. She marched forward, her fingers clamping around my shoulder and digging painfully into my collarbone. Her glare pinned me in place. "Do not even think about pulling a stunt. If you try to run from this house and bring shame to the Crestwell name, I promise you will regret the day you were born."
I pulled away from her iron grip, keeping my eyes fixed firmly on the intricate patterns of the floor. Trudging up the sweeping staircase, my legs felt like lead. I pushed open the door to my bedroom and retreated into the suffocating quiet. Curling into a tight ball on the edge of the mattress, I buried my face in my hands and let the tears fall until my eyes burned dry.
Hours dragged on. Darkness swallowed the room, casting long shadows across the walls. Sitting up, I wiped my raw face. A sudden spark of clarity pierced through my despair. I did not have to do this. I did not have to surrender my life to a ruthless, paralyzed stranger. I had Silas. He might only be able to afford a cramped studio in a rundown neighborhood, but his apartment was a sanctuary compared to a loveless, forced marriage.
I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and dialed his number. The line rang until it hit voicemail. Frowning, I tried three more times, pacing the length of my room, but the result was the same. The digital clock on my dresser glowed past nine. The house had fallen dead quiet, save for the muffled sound of Tinsley giggling on a phone call down the hall.
If Silas was asleep, I would just wake him. I cracked my bedroom door open and crept into the dark corridor. Holding my breath, I slipped past Tinsley's room. Seeing her door slightly ajar, I noticed a wad of cash sitting out in the open on her dresser. Desperation fueled my hands. I darted in, snatched the money, and sneaked down the back stairs.
Slipping out the back door, the crisp night air hit my lungs, clearing the stifling fog of the estate. I hailed a passing cab on the corner, handing the driver a portion of Tinsley’s cash, and gave him Silas’s address.
Twenty minutes later, the cab dropped me off. I stood in front of his battered apartment door, taking a deep breath to steady my racing heart. I punched my birthday into the keypad. The lock clicked green. I pushed the door open, ready to fall into his arms and tell him everything.
The apartment was a disaster zone. Empty beer bottles cluttered the small counter, and clothes lay scattered across the cheap linoleum floor. I opened my mouth to call his name, but a sound caught in my throat. Deep, rhythmic groans echoed from behind the makeshift partition he used to divide his sleeping area from the living space. It sounded like a physical struggle, accompanied by the creaking of bedsprings.
Panic seized my chest. Thinking he was hurt, I rushed over and rounded the barricade.
My feet rooted to the floor. The breath vanished from my lungs in a harsh gasp. Silas was in bed, stark naked, tangled with three other women.
My eyes widened in sheer, unfiltered horror at the explicit scene unfolding in front of me. One of the women had her legs slung over his shoulders as he sucked on her clit, his hand cupped the second woman's boobs, teasing her nipple, while he rammed his cock into the third woman's mouth. The wet, slapping sounds of flesh and their echoing moans filled the cramped space, making my stomach churn with nausea.
My jaw dropped. Bile rose in my throat, choking me. I could not blink, paralyzed by the vile betrayal.
"I didn't know you were expecting one more," the woman with her legs over his shoulders remarked, her gaze landing on me standing frozen by the partition.
Silas whipped his head around. His eyes widened in sheer panic, his face draining of color the moment he saw me.
The paralysis broke. Sickened to my core, I spun on my heel, desperate to escape the disgusting sight. But he scrambled off the mattress, not even bothering to grab a towel to cover his naked body. His heavy footsteps thudded across the floor behind me. He seized my arm, his grip bruising, and yanked me around to face him.
"Elara, what the hell are you doing here?" he demanded.
I wrenched my arm free with a surge of adrenaline and swung my hand. My palm cracked hard against his cheek, the slap ringing out through the messy apartment. "That is it? That is all you have to say? How could you do this to me!" I screamed, my voice cracking under the weight of the profound betrayal.
He rubbed his reddening cheek. The shock in his eyes hardened into a nasty, hateful scowl. "You said you weren't coming over tonight."
"And that gives you a free pass to cheat on me with three other women?" Tears blurred my vision, hot and stinging.
"This is your fault!" he roared, stepping into my space. His loud voice boomed off the thin walls. "I only put up with you because I saw that massive Crestwell estate! I thought you were loaded, but it turns out you are nothing but a glorified maid!"
I stumbled back, my heart shattering into jagged pieces. "Silas..." My voice was barely a whisper, broken and hollow.
"And you won't even let me fuck you! What is the point?" he spat, stepping closer to intimidate me. "You always say you are never ready. Well, guess what? I am done waiting. I have been done."
He lunged forward, grabbing my arm with a vicious grip, and dragged me toward the exit. I fought against him, but he overpowered me. He shoved me through the doorway with bruising force. I staggered backward into the dark hallway, my arms flailing to catch my balance. Before I could steady myself, he slammed the heavy wooden door shut right in my face.
I stood frozen in the dingy corridor. The rhythmic moans resumed inside, muffled but unmistakable. I pressed a hand over my mouth to quiet my sobs, turning away from the man I thought loved me. Now my life was truly over. With Silas gone, I had nothing.
With no money left after the cab fare and nowhere else to go, I stumbled out of the apartment building. The cold city air bit through my thin clothes. This was it. The worst birthday of my life. I could not go back to the manor, but I was stranded in the middle of the night.
My mind was a blinding storm of betrayal and despair. I wandered down the dark streets, a ghost haunting the concrete sidewalks. I did not look up. I did not check the streetlights or the crosswalks. My vision was swimming with tears, rendering me blind to my surroundings.
A deafening horn blasted through the air, tearing through the quiet night. Blinding headlights flashed into my eyes, illuminating the wet asphalt in front of me. I snapped out of my daze, realizing I had wandered straight into the middle of a busy intersection, and a car was hurtling toward me at full speed.
Panic hijacked my body. I threw my arms up to shield my face, squeezing my eyes shut. I braced for the crushing impact of metal against bone, knowing I could not move out of the way in time.
A massive hand clamped onto my arm. I was yanked backward with terrifying force. I slammed hard against a broad chest that felt like a solid brick wall. The car zoomed past me, the rush of wind whipping my hair across my face. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, beating so fast it threatened to crack my sternum. I stayed frozen against the stranger, gasping for air, trembling from the near-death encounter.
"You can pull away now," a deep, chillingly familiar voice rumbled from above me.
I jerked back, keeping my head bowed in sheer panic. "I am so sorry. You saved my life. Thank you so much—"
The words died in my throat the exact moment I looked up. I met the icy, intense gaze of my savior.
My jaw dropped open in raw disbelief. The world stopped spinning. It was none other than Kaelen Vexton—the cold, ruthless billionaire I was supposed to marry tomorrow.
But that was not the shocking part. My eyes dropped downward, my brain short-circuiting as I took in his towering figure.
He was not sitting in his wheelchair. He was standing firmly on his own two legs, towering formidably above me in the dark street.
