My One True Love
The hospital room settled into a deafening, suffocating silence. Lyra shifted on the crinkling white sheets, her dull eyes drifting from the untouched glass of milk to the floor near the doorway. In his frantic, desperate rush to leave the hospital and meet Bianca, Silas had carelessly dropped his wallet on the floor.
Gritting her teeth against the sharp spike of pain radiating through her battered body, Lyra leaned over painfully to pick it up. Her bruised fingers trembled as she brushed the cool leather, pulling it into her lap. A bitter frown touched her pale lips. Looking closely, she realized it was his old wallet, not the expensive, custom-made replacement she had scraped her limited funds together to buy for him years ago. When they first got married, she had starved herself for months, saving every penny she could to afford that luxury gift. He had accepted it with his usual detached coolness, promising to keep it forever. Yet here he was, still carrying this worn-out, tattered relic.
Opening it, she expected to see his ID or credit cards, but instead, she found a spliced photograph tucked carefully inside the main fold.
It wasn't a picture of their family. Silas stood on one side of the frame, and right beside him was Bianca, dressed in a stunning, pure white wedding gown. Bianca was smiling brilliantly at the camera, looking utterly radiant without a care in the world. But what made Lyra's chest tighten in sheer agony was Silas. He was smiling with a rare, soft affection beside Bianca—an unguarded, genuine warmth she had never received in seven long years of marriage.
For years, Silas had convinced Lyra that true love didn't need to be flaunted, using that convenient excuse to explain their lack of proper wedding portraits. He made her feel superficial for even asking. Looking at the pieced-together photo, the truth crystallized in her mind with terrifying clarity: to Silas, only Bianca was truly worthy of standing beside him in a wedding dress.
Down in the bottom corner of the worn photo, Silas had written *'My One True Love'* alongside a specific date. It wasn't just any random day. It was the exact date of his and Lyra's wedding—which was, sickeningly, the exact same day Bianca had left the country.
Lying completely alone in her sterile hospital bed, Lyra let out a soundless, breathless laugh. Her chest heaved, but her eyes remained dry. All the scattered, confusing pieces of the last decade finally locked into place. She finally fully accepted that her husband’s heart had never been hers. It had always undeniably belonged to the woman she took the fall for.
By dusk, having mentally shattered the sad little remains of her marriage, Lyra reached for her phone. Silas and Milo hadn't returned, and the hollow weight in her chest confirmed it was over. She made a decisive phone call to the immensely wealthy Ashcroft family, her true biological relatives whom she had discovered a year ago but intentionally kept at a distance.
The line connected almost instantly. "I've made up my mind," Lyra stated into the receiver, her voice devoid of any hesitation or fear. "I'm coming home."
A sharp, reverent breath echoed on the other end, but before they could celebrate, Lyra immediately set a strict condition. She informed them that she would not return until three months from now. She needed this exact window to mourn her beloved Grandmother Lenora on the upcoming anniversary of her passing, physically regain whatever strength her ruined body could muster, and cleanly walk away from Silas Vane for good.
Thousands of miles overseas, in the sprawling, opulent estate of the Ashcroft family, a man slowly lowered his phone. Her impeccably dressed brother stood frozen in the grand study, his initial shock rapidly giving way to unbridled joy. He turned to his three equally striking, powerful siblings, excitedly relaying the news, absolutely thrilled that their little sister was finally returning to where she belonged.
Once officially discharged from the hospital days later, Lyra returned to the Vane residence, relying heavily on a metal crutch. Every single step up to the front door was agonizing.
Upon her arrival, Silas immediately stepped forward and pulled her stiff body into his arms. His eyes were rimmed red, perfectly playing the part of a relieved spouse as he spun a lie about how the nightmare was behind them and they would finally be a happy family.
Lyra stared blankly over his shoulder, scoffing inwardly at his shameless performance. *After lying to me this entirely, you really expect me to buy that anymore?*
Before she could pull away from his fake embrace, Milo bounded forward from the hallway. He carelessly launched himself at her, physically bouncing onto her freshly injured hand. Lyra bit the inside of her cheek to stifle a gasp as agonizing pressure flared through her bruised skin.
"Oops. Sorry, Mom," Milo offered with a fleeting, completely guiltless apology, immediately turning and running off to watch television without a backward glance.
Ignoring Silas’s hovering presence, Lyra retreated straight to her bedroom to pack her belongings. Leaning heavily on her crutch, she looked around the master suite and realized how utterly disposable she was. The room was dominated by dark masculine tones; barely a trace of her personality or presence existed in this house. She was nothing more than a ghost in her own marriage.
However, as she opened the hidden wall safe to retrieve her few valuables, a cold dread washed over her. One vital item was missing from her safe: the precious pendant her grandmother Lenora had left her. It was the one piece of jewelry that mattered, which Lyra had tearfully entrusted to Silas for safekeeping right before going to prison.
She frantically started tearing through the drawers, tossing aside expensive watches and cufflinks, desperate to find the familiar silver chain.
Her frantic search was abruptly interrupted when Milo loudly announced Bianca's arrival from the hallway.
Abandoning the empty safe, Lyra gripped her crutch and made her way back out. As she stepped into the living room, her jaw tightened.
Bianca sauntered into the living room, acting completely comfortable, sprawling out on the sofa as though she were the true lady of the house. The entire room felt lighter to Silas and Milo with her around.
When Lyra entered and remained stonily quiet, the atmosphere instantly grew thick. Sensing the tension, Bianca made a highly theatrical show of scooting a few inches away from Silas on the couch.
"Lyra, you're back!" Bianca said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "Please, don't get the wrong idea. Silas and I are just friends. Don't be jealous, okay?"
Silas’s brow furrowed, and he immediately jumped to Bianca's defense, impatiently stating she only came out of concern for Lyra and that she needed to stop acting so cold.
Lyra simply leaned on her crutch, sitting on a stool across the room, letting the suffocating silence stretch.
"Anyway, I brought something for you!" Bianca chirped, entirely unfazed. She presented a sleek gift box, claiming she remembered Lyra's style, and dramatically pulled out a high-end, exquisitely tailored dance outfit.
Staring at the shimmering garment, Lyra's breath caught sharply in her throat at the exceptionally cruel reminder that her permanently ruined legs would never dance again.
"I can't wear that," Lyra said flatly, her voice deadened. She flatly refused it.
Feigning innocent ignorance, Bianca gasped loudly, covering her mouth with a manicured hand. "Oh my god! Your legs... I completely forgot!" she cried out. Apologizing for being 'rough' and not as thoughtful as other girls, she shamelessly begged Lyra not to be mad.
Lyra stood perfectly still, her knuckles white on her crutch. Staring straight through the vicious malice dancing in Bianca's dark eyes, Lyra felt only a wave of bitter irony.
"It doesn't matter," Lyra stated, her voice chillingly calm. She stated she quit dancing long ago and telling Bianca to keep it.
The expensive outfit meant absolutely nothing to her, much like the husband and son she was currently discarding. They were all entirely useless to her now.
But as Bianca laughed in victory and set the box down on the glass table, the neckline of her silk blouse shifted.
Lyra's stomach violently dropped and her fists clenched until her nails dug deeply into her palms, drawing blood.
Swinging casually around Bianca's neck, resting comfortably against her collarbone, was Lenora's irreplaceable pendant.
