Let The Game Begin

The wind whipped across the expansive balcony of the Sterling Majestic, carrying the sharp chill of the night air. Dominic Sterling stood near the glass railing, looking out over the sprawling, glittering empire of wealth and hidden secrets that stretched far below him. He held a glass of expensive dark wine, letting the smooth crystal cool his skin. The atmosphere out here felt heavy, thick with unspoken manipulation. Beside him, Genevieve stepped closer. She casually draped her slender arms around his waist, resting her head against his shoulder.

"Just how long do you plan to play out this little game of yours?" she asked, her voice low and teasing in his ear.

Dominic merely hummed a noncommittal note. He took a slow sip of his wine, letting the rich taste linger on his tongue. Despite the beautiful woman clinging to him and the perfect view of the city, his mind involuntarily drifted back to the fiery server girl. He saw her defiant glare, the worn-out sneakers, the way she had looked at him at the bus stop like he was nothing but dirt.

Genevieve misinterpreted his silence. She pulled back slightly, her expression full of disbelief. "I just can't believe the impoverished girl actually agreed to your humiliating proposition so quickly."

"I told you, she's a Wilder," Dominic replied. His tone was heavy and dismissive, a practiced shield to mask his own conflicting emotions.

Genevieve let out a light laugh. She trailed her fingers along his arm. "Bribing the girl straight up takes the thrill and challenge out of the bet, Dominic. Where is the fun in that?"

Dominic turned his head, shooting her a dark, sharp glance. "There are no rules against it, Genevieve," he retorted smoothly. "I offered what Wilders are slaves to—the one thing they respond to. And like the perfect bait, she took it."

Genevieve smiled wickedly. Her eyes gleamed with dark amusement in the dim light. She stepped further into dangerous territory, clearly eager to poke at his raw nerves. "Technically, it was only her brother who got directly involved with Lucius," she noted aloud. "But your deep-seated hatred clearly extends to blanket the whole family."

Dominic’s posture went rigid. His jawline tightened so hard that a muscle ticked beneath his skin. "And what is her brother, Genevieve?" he asked. His voice dropped to a cold, dangerous register.

"A Wilder," she whispered softly. She smiled, openly reveling in the dark entertainment that his evident pain and extreme discomfort provided her.

Dominic refused to engage her any further. He didn't utter another word. He simply raised his glass and drained the last of his wine, his internal thoughts growing darker than the night sky above them.

Miles away, across the city, the atmosphere was vastly different behind the sticky, bustling bar of the Onyx Lounge. The loud bass of the music rattled the floorboards, mixing with the noisy chatter of the crowd. Elena frantically wiped down a row of glasses, her stomach twisting into tight knots. It had been two full days since she had last seen Dominic at the bus stop. Yet, his taunting, arrogant proposition had lingered heavily in her mind every second since she sent that text.

*Three dates. Five thousand dollars per date.*

She scrubbed hard at a water spot on a pint glass. Who in their right mind paid that much money for a simple date? Her anxious mind tried to untangle the terrifying reality of what she had agreed to. The sheer amount of money felt like a massive weight pressing down on her chest.

Before she could process another anxious thought, the heavy lounge doors swung wide open. Dominic walked in. He was flanked by his two elite friends, Tristan and Nathaniel. But Dom's commanding, predatory gaze locked onto Elena the exact second he crossed the threshold.

Her heart lurched hard into her throat. Elena’s hands gripped the edge of the wet bar counter in a white-knuckled hold. She stood paralyzed. His dark, overwhelming presence naturally drew the wandering eyes of nearly everyone in the busy room. He left his friends near the entrance and deliberately closed the distance between them. He walked straight up to the bar, his eyes never leaving hers.

He didn't bother with a greeting.

"Tomorrow after work," Dominic said. His voice was a low, smooth command that vibrated through the narrow space between them. "I'll pick you up."

He delivered the statement with terrifying confidence. He didn't even pause to wait for her verbal confirmation. He simply turned on his heel and walked purposefully toward a VIP back booth in the corner.

Elena exhaled a sharp, shaky breath. Her knees suddenly felt like they had turned to jelly. She had to lean against the counter to keep from collapsing to the floor.

Beside her, her coworker Tessa nudged her in the ribs. Tessa's eyes were wide with shock. "Why did *the* Dominic Sterling just approach you directly?" she demanded.

"Nothing," Elena muttered shakily. Her voice was barely a whisper over the music. "Please, just drop the subject."

But her heart continued to pound against her ribcage. She risked a slow, cautious glance over to the back booth. She saw Dominic laughing with his friends. Yet, despite the noise and the distance, she couldn't shake the terrifying certainty that he was hyper-aware of her every single move from across the room. She felt the impending dread settle heavy over her shoulders.

She turned back to the sink, gripping the edge of the basin. Her mind was consumed by a single, panicked, echoing thought.

*Oh God, what did I get myself into....*
