Divorce!

"Repeat that—where in the world did she go?" Declan’s voice sliced through the sterile quiet of the Moonstone Hotel room. He froze mid-step, his knuckles turning a stark, bloodless white as he gripped his phone.

"Mr. Thornton..." Martha’s voice sounded utterly terrified on the other end, trembling with an anxious vibration that made Declan's stomach twist. "Mrs. Thornton took Leo and left. She packed their bags and walked right out the front door."

A vicious coil of fury wound tightly in Declan's chest, hot and suffocating. "What do you mean she left?"

"And... sir..." Martha swallowed hard, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "She explicitly ordered every single one of your expensive belongings to be thrown in the trash. The designer clothes, the jewelry, the handbags you bought her... she told the staff to dump it all. She said she is never coming back."

Declan’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. His thumb jabbed the screen aggressively, terminating the call. The sheer audacity of the woman. He had arrogantly brushed off her recent divorce papers as a mere tantrum, a pathetic cry for attention from a housewife who had way too much free time on her hands. He fully assumed he could easily smooth things over with a few expensive gifts once he had comfortably settled Vanessa and her son. He was completely confident that Nora, lacking any real power or financial resources of her own, would come crawling back at his first soft word.

He immediately flipped through his contacts, aggressively tapping her name. He held the phone to his ear, expecting her to answer with a tearful, desperate demand for an apology.

Instead, he was met with the sterile, automated tone of a robotic operator.

"The number you have dialed is no longer in service."

Disconnected.

Declan stared at the dark screen, his chest heaving with absolute disbelief. She had actually canceled her number. *How dare she.* She was the legally bound wife of the Thornton Group's CEO; this childish, humiliating game had gone way too far. The nerve of her, thinking she could just vanish without his explicit permission. She was testing his limits, and his patience was wearing dangerously thin. He gripped the phone so tightly the metallic casing dug painfully into his palm, his mind racing with visions of dragging her back to the estate.

He was seconds away from marching out the door, utilizing his vast network of security to track her down and force her back to reality.

"Daddy Declan..."

The weak, perfectly timed mumble snapped Declan sharply from his blinding rage. He whipped his head around. Kaelen was hunched over on the edge of the sofa, clutching his small stomach, looking incredibly pale and fragile.

"I just... I don't feel good," Kaelen whimpered, his lower lip quivering pitifully. "I'm sorry to be a bother to you."

Declan’s simmering anger instantly softened into protective care. He couldn't unleash his fury here, not in front of a sick child who idolized him. He quickly crossed the room and knelt beside the trembling boy. "You're never a bother, Kaelen. Does your stomach hurt again? I'm right here."

Vanessa stood nearby, watching the entire exchange with calculating eyes. She wrung her hands together, the dim ambient light catching the unshed tears in her eyes. Her voice was laced with a heavy, manufactured guilt, perfectly calibrated to hit every one of Declan's savior instincts. "Declan, this is all my fault. I shouldn't have called you away tonight. If I'm the reason you and Ms. Vance are fighting... I feel terrible. I'll never forgive myself."

Declan scoffed bitterly at the very thought of his ungrateful wife. "It's not your fault at all, Vanessa. Don't put this on yourself." He stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow. "She's the one being completely unreasonable. Let her throw her ridiculous fit. I want to see exactly how long she can keep this up without my money. She'll realize soon enough what the real world costs when she has to pay her own way."

Sensing her distinct advantage, Vanessa smoothed her expression into one of gentle, domestic concern. "Let me fetch you some fresh clothes, Declan. You shouldn't stay in that stiff suit if you're going to be up with him."

Kaelen eagerly grasped Declan's large hand in both of his small ones. "Daddy Declan, can you stay the night? Please?" The boy looked up with wide, innocent, hopeful eyes. "Can Mommy share the large bed too? The room is so big and dark. If we're all together, I won't suffer from terrible nightmares."

Vanessa's cheeks flushed a delicate pink. She feigned a weak, modest protest, stepping back slightly and pressing a hand to her chest. "Kaelen, sweetie, don't say such things. That's highly inappropriate. Declan is a married man..."

But Declan looked at the traumatized, seemingly fatherless child shivering in front of him. Pity washed away any lingering hesitation or societal rules. "Forget the rules, Vanessa," Declan said firmly, giving a resolute nod. "Kaelen's never had a real family. He needs to feel safe, and he's far too mature for his age because of what he's lacked. Tonight, we'll all sleep in the same room."

Vanessa’s lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile of victory. "Thank you, Declan."

Across the sprawling, neon-lit city, far removed from Declan’s suffocating ego and Vanessa’s calculated theatrics, Nora stood inside an opulent, high-rise suite at the luxurious Crown Hotel. The contrast between this sanctuary and her marital home was stark. There were no heavy, oppressive antique furnishings here, only sleek modern lines and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the glittering, endless skyline of Oakhaven below.

Nora stood bathed in the soft glow of the city lights, casually twirling a delicate crystal glass of deep red wine. She watched the crimson liquid coat the sides of the expensive stemware, the rich aroma wafting up to her senses.

It had been exactly six years since she had allowed herself the simple pleasure of a drink. Six suffocating years of actively erasing her true self, packing away her brilliant mind, her bold personality, and her commanding voice to perfectly play the subdued, obedient role of 'Mrs. Thornton.'

Now, she lifted the glass to her lips. The forbidden taste of the rich, dry alcohol washed over her tongue, sparking a fierce, familiar flicker of the powerful woman she used to be. It burned slightly on the way down, a brilliant fire that shattered the invisible chains that had bound her for so long.

Leaving the estate hadn't been a rash, emotional outburst; it was a carefully calculated extraction. She had Leo safely by her side, sleeping in the luxurious guest room down the hall. Right now, in this sprawling, chaotic world, that was all that truly mattered. She had walked away from the mansion with nothing but her son, aggressively ordering the destruction of everything Declan had ever bought her. It was a declaration of absolute, undeniable independence.

But she also knew her husband intimately. Declan’s suffocating, monstrous pride would never, ever let her walk away with their son peacefully. He viewed Leo as a Thornton heir, a piece of untouchable property, and he viewed Nora as a decorative fixture that had dared to step out of line. He would weaponize his endless wealth, his ruthless lawyers, and his immense corporate influence to crush her and drag them both back into his gilded cage.

Nora narrowed her eyes at the twinkling city below, mentally preparing for a brutal, drawn-out war. She wouldn't have to fight him alone, though. She didn't need a high-priced legal team to strike the first fatal blow; she had the perfect Trojan horse already sitting inside the Thornton family compound.

Declan’s aristocratic mother, Helena Thornton.

Helena had fiercely despised Nora since the very day old Winston, the family patriarch, had arranged the unexpected marriage. To Helena, Nora was nothing but common dirt, an unworthy, pathetic stain on their pristine, blue-blooded lineage. As long as Winston was healthy and alert, Helena had been forced to bite her tongue, maintaining a polite facade out of pure respect for her husband. But ever since Winston had fallen into his tragic coma, the old woman’s venom had been completely unleashed.

Helena was the perfect, destructive weapon to sever the ties completely. If Helena realized Nora was finally willing to leave, the matriarch would move heaven and earth to expedite the divorce herself. Helena wouldn't just agree to a divorce; she would aggressively champion it. She would eagerly hand Nora the pen and paper herself if it meant restoring the Thornton bloodline's exclusive prestige. Nora smirked softly into her wine glass, her mind racing with calculated strategies. She was more than willing to play dirty, to manipulate the old bat's elitist hatred, if it meant securing her son's permanent freedom.

Realizing the late hour, Nora finally pulled her gaze away from the hypnotic skyline. She set her empty crystal glass down on the sleek marble counter with a soft clink. The plush, luxurious carpet muffled her footsteps as she walked softly down the short hallway toward the guest room. She noticed a faint, unnatural blue glow slipping out from beneath the heavy wooden door.

Frowning slightly, she pushed the door open. "Leo?"

At the sudden sound of her voice calling his name, Leo violently scrambled on top of the massive king-sized bed. His hands flew across the keyboard in a blur before he snapped his glowing laptop shut with a loud, echoing crack. He whipped around to face her, a sheepish, exaggerated grin plastered across his face, desperately masking his deep disappointment at having to abort his secret hacking task. The complex web of encrypted files and proxy servers he had been navigating on the Dark Web vanished instantly into the darkness of the closed machine.

"Mommy!" he chirped, his voice an octave higher than usual, his legs kicking nervously beneath the heavy duvet. "I was just... I was just checking something! I'll go to bed right now, I promise!"

His bright eyes darted nervously back and forth between Nora and the dark, silent screen of his computer, praying she hadn't caught a glimpse of his intense search.

Smiling softly, entirely oblivious to his high-stakes hidden agenda and the fact that he was currently hunting for his biological father, Nora leaned against the doorframe. She gently shook her head, her maternal warmth completely melting away the cold strategist from moments before.

"Come on, sleepyhead," she said softly, walking over to tuck the blankets around his shoulders. "Tomorrow's a big day for us. We need you well rested."
