She's Done With This Blind Fool
The sterile, unforgiving scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the dimly lit hospital room, coating the back of Nora Vance’s throat with every shallow, agonizing breath. The rhythmic, monotonous beep of the ventilator was the only sound piercing the oppressive silence, a mechanical countdown to the inevitable end of her life. She lay on the precipice of death, her frail body reduced to a hollow, broken shell. The devastating hotel assault from months ago had completely ruined her health, leaving her organs failing and her skin as pale and brittle as old parchment.
Yet, the excruciating physical agony tearing through her veins was entirely eclipsed by a soul-crushing grief that suffocated her heart. Her beloved son, Leo, was gone. Taken from her in a brutal car accident. In his final, terrifying moments, he had cried out for his father, desperately wanting to see the man he idolized. But her husband, Declan Thornton, was nowhere to be found. He had been too busy dining with his precious "sweetheart" to answer the frantic calls from the hospital.
As Nora stared blankly at the peeling paint on the ceiling, the heavy door of the private ward clicked open abruptly. The sharp, rhythmic click-clack of designer high heels announced the intruder, the sound cutting through the sterile quiet long before the woman fully entered the dim light. Nora’s listless, sunken gaze shifted slowly toward the sound. The very architect of her lifelong misery stood before her.
Vanessa Bancroft.
Dripping with triumphant venom, Vanessa stepped up to the edge of the hospital bed. Her perfectly manicured presence, clad in pristine, custom-tailored silk, provided a stark, grotesque contrast to Nora’s pathetic decay. A cold, cruel smirk twisted Vanessa’s painted lips as she leaned over the safety rail, invading Nora’s personal space.
"Declan is mine now," Vanessa declared, her voice dropping to a poisonous, malicious whisper that echoed in the quiet room. "That little bastard of yours is dead. Declan will be formally recognizing my son as his heir. And you... well, it’s finally your turn to die."
A single, scalding tear escaped the corner of Nora’s eye, tracing a silent, agonizing path down her hollowed cheek. She didn't even have the strength to turn her head away.
Vanessa leaned in even closer, her eyes glittering with dark malice. "Do you want to know a little secret, Nora? I had your little brat killed. I orchestrated the entire accident. And even if Declan somehow finds out, do you honestly think he’ll care?" She let out a soft, mocking laugh that sent shivers down Nora’s spine. "Because... that child was never Declan's to begin with. He never should have existed in the first place. His death was simply necessary to clear the path."
What? Nora’s heart gave a weak, painful lurch. Leo... not Declan's child? What on earth was she talking about?
"And remember those men at the hotel?" Vanessa continued, twisting the knife deeper into Nora's shattered soul. "The ones who so 'accidentally' assaulted you and gave you that nasty, incurable disease that’s rotting you from the inside out? That was no accident, my dear. I orchestrated that, too."
Nora's bloodshot eyes snapped wide open, burning with a dawning, horrific understanding. Every ounce of her misery, the destruction of her body, the murder of her precious son—all of it was the deliberate work of the woman standing before her. She, the cherished daughter of the Vance family, had been chosen personally by Declan's grandfather, Winston, to be his granddaughter-in-law. She had always put Declan first. When he brought the ailing Vanessa home, Nora had even bent over backward to help her, all out of a naive sense of gratitude because Vanessa had once saved Declan's life.
"Look at you," Vanessa sneered, her gaze sweeping over Nora's frail, trembling form with sheer disgust. "You're absolutely pathetic. Yet, despite everything, he still hasn't divorced you. It's infuriating."
Pulling out her sleek smartphone, Vanessa tapped the screen and shoved it right into Nora’s line of sight. She flaunted a text message from Declan. It read: *Nessa, happy birthday. Your favorite gift is ready.* Beneath the text was a high-resolution photo of an extravagant, custom-made bouquet of deep crimson roses.
"See this?" Vanessa waved the phone tauntingly. "The man you're so blindly obsessed with doesn't give a damn about you bleeding out in this bed. He's too busy preparing my birthday present. Oh, and he's planning to propose to me tonight. We're going to have the grandest, most luxurious wedding this city has ever seen. It will be nothing like that pathetic, hidden little secret marriage he's always been so deeply ashamed of with you."
Vanessa’s smile widened, triumphant and vicious. "It is a real pity you won't be around to see it. Consider today your death anniversary, Nora."
Overwhelmed by sheer betrayal and the crushing weight of the truth, Nora’s chest began to seize violently. The ventilator's steady rhythm suddenly turned frantic, a chaotic alarm blaring through the room as systemic organ failure finally took hold. She clutched uselessly at the thin, sterile hospital sheets, but her body was too weak, her strength utterly spent. A final, shuddering breath escaped her chapped lips. Her pupils dilated, locking onto Vanessa's triumphant face one last time before succumbing entirely to the endless, heavy darkness.
"Mommy? What are you thinking about?"
A jarringly innocent, familiar voice shattered the suffocating void.
Nora violently gasped, her chest heaving as if she had just broken the surface of a freezing ocean. Her eyes snapped open, wild and panicked. The cold, sterile hospital walls, the suffocating smell of bleach and death, and the agonizing pain in her organs had completely vanished. Instead, she was assaulted by warm, blinding sunlight and the chaotic, echoing symphony of a bustling airport terminal. The rolling of luggage wheels, the murmur of a thousand conversations, and the crisp voice over the intercom flooded her senses.
She looked downward, her gaze locking onto a small, incredibly warm hand gripping hers.
Leo.
He was standing right beside her, alive, healthy, and looking up at her with bright, curious eyes. The sunlight danced across his soft, rosy cheeks, highlighting the vibrant life she thought had been extinguished forever. The staggering reality crashed over her like a tidal wave. She wasn't dead. She had been miraculously reborn.
Tears instantly welled in her eyes, spilling over her lashes before she could stop them. She dropped to her knees right there in the middle of the terminal, pulling her son into a crushing, desperate embrace. She frantically ran her trembling hands over his small shoulders, his warm back, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse of life within him. Her voice was thick and trembling uncontrollably. "Leo... my baby... I missed you so, so much..."
Leo looked mildly puzzled but gently patted her back with his little hand. "Mommy, what's wrong? Weren't we just together on the plane?"
Nora pulled back slightly, looking into Leo's clear, guileless eyes. A hurricane of emotions raged inside her chest. Oppressive despair sharply transitioned into a blazing, protective fury. She recognized this exact moment. The layout of the airport, the clothes they were wearing—she had regressed to the precise day Declan’s cherished Vanessa returned from abroad. It was also the exact day she had first brought Leo home to the Thornton family.
In her previous life, Declan hadn't even bothered to be here to pick them up. He was here entirely for Vanessa and her son, Kaelen Bancroft. He'd even brought them straight to Thornton Manor. Back then, a foolishly naive Nora had warmly welcomed the woman, completely blind to the viper she was letting into her home. She had felt a misplaced sense of obligation, defending Vanessa to anyone who questioned the woman's constant presence, while watching Declan abandon his own family to dote on Vanessa's son.
Armed with the agonizing, blood-soaked memories of her past life, Nora’s tear-filled eyes narrowed into icy slits. Vanessa’s dying confession echoed in her mind: *Leo wasn't Declan's child. I had your little brat killed.*
She silently vowed to slaughter anyone who dared threaten her or her child ever again. This time, there would be no mercy, no naive gratitude, and absolutely no secret, pathetic marriage holding her back.
Standing back up and holding Leo’s hand firmly, Nora looked across the expansive terminal. The sickeningly sweet tableau played out flawlessly, just as it had in her nightmare of a past life.
Declan stood near the arrivals gate, impeccably dressed in a tailored, charcoal suit, holding a massive, ostentatious bouquet of crimson roses. After a short wait, Vanessa emerged from the VIP lane, looking effortlessly elegant and practically glowing, holding the hand of her young son, Kaelen. A bright, genuine smile broke out on Declan's typically stoic face. He stepped forward, handing the beautiful flowers to Vanessa with a look of pure adoration, taking her designer suitcase, and then knelt down to scoop young Kaelen into his strong arms.
Kaelen immediately wrapped his arms around Declan's neck and planted a loud, sloppy kiss on his cheek. The scene was perfectly constructed, like a domestic snapshot of a happy family.
"Dad went to pick up that woman," Leo's young voice piped up beside her, breaking her dark train of thought. He pointed toward a nearby flight information screen. "I just looked it up on my tablet. She's Vanessa Bancroft, a famous international pianist! They've known each other for years. Everyone on the internet says she's his precious sweetheart."
Nora’s heart turned to stone. Even her young son could see through the facade. She remembered how, in her last life, Leo had tried to warn her about his father's blatant favoritism, and she, naive and trusting, had actually scolded her own flesh and blood to defend Vanessa. Never again.
Across the hall, Kaelen suddenly threw his head back. "Daddy Declan! I wanna play airplane!" he chirped, clinging tightly to Declan's broad shoulder.
"Kaelen, sweetie, don't call him that. It's Declan, no daddy," Vanessa corrected softly. A faint, calculated blush painted her cheeks as she smiled apologetically at the handsome billionaire.
"No! I want Declan to be my daddy! Daddy Declan! Daddy Declan! Daddy Declan!" Kaelen whined, kicking his legs and throwing a sudden, loud tantrum right in the middle of the arrivals hall.
Instead of correcting the monumental disrespect to his actual family, Declan merely chuckled with indulgent warmth. He was a man who barely spared five minutes a month to speak to his own supposed son, yet he was perfectly fine risking the crease of his thousand-dollar suit to appease this spoiled brat. "It's fine," Declan said smoothly, completely unbothered. "If it makes him happy, he can call me whatever he wants. From now on, Kaelen can call me Daddy."
Disgust boiled in Nora’s veins, turning her blood to ice. It was a picture-perfect reunion, and she and Leo were nothing but discarded trash to him. She had seen more than enough of this charade.
Reaching into her purse, Nora pulled out her phone and dialed her husband's number. She stood perfectly still, watching him from across the crowded hall.
Declan, still cradling another woman's child in his arms, fumbled with his pocket for a moment before fishing out his phone. He answered, his voice instantly dropping to its usual flat, distant tone. "Nora? What is it?"
"Leo and I are at the airport," Nora said, her voice eerily devoid of emotion, a stark contrast to the rage burning in her chest.
Declan didn't even bother to look around the terminal. He just sighed softly. "Sorry, something urgent came up at work. A complete emergency. I'll send the driver to pick you up."
It was a smooth, practiced lie.
"Don't bother," Nora replied, her tone carrying a terrifying, icy finality. She abruptly severed the connection, cutting off his next words.
"I'll have the driver—" Declan began, but the line was already dead. He lowered the phone, staring at the screen for a few seconds, genuinely stunned. Nora had always been his obedient, understanding wife. She had never dared to hang up on him before.
"So, Declan, is this your so-called work emergency?"
A cold, crystalline voice cut through the air directly behind him.
Declan froze. His entire body went rigid, and his head snapped up as raw panic flared in his dark eyes. He whipped around and found Nora standing mere feet away. Her grip was firm and protective on Leo's small hand. She was staring at him with a gaze as frigid as an arctic winter, completely stripping away the gentle, compliant demeanor he had exploited for years.
"Looks like we're interrupting your touching family reunion," Nora stated, her tone flat, slicing through the tension like a freshly sharpened blade. She didn't spare Vanessa a single glance; the pianist was entirely beneath her notice in this moment. Her eyes were locked solely on the man who had ruined her past life. "Declan, let's get a divorce."
Declan's face darkened instantly, furious confusion replacing the initial panic. "Nora, what the hell do you think you're doing?"
What was she doing? The sheer audacity of this man to demand answers while holding another woman's child. Nora didn't scream. She didn't cry. The naive, desperate woman who would have begged for his attention had died on that hospital bed.
"Declan," she said, her voice firm and echoing with intense liberation. "We are entirely finished."
Without waiting for his pathetic excuses or another single word, she firmly squeezed Leo's hand, turned her back on the stunned billionaire, and walked away from her toxic past.
