You'll Be Safe

Clara

I had absolutely nowhere to go after fleeing Derek’s apartment. The cold city air whipped against my face, but it did nothing to cool the agonizing burn of fresh betrayal festering in my chest. My mind relentlessly replayed the nightmare I had just uncovered. Chloe had done it again. She had driven her venomous claws into the man I loved, systematically snatching away the last good thing I thought I had. I drove aimlessly, my vision blurred with hot, angry tears, until my car practically guided itself into the sprawling underground parking lot of the Zenith Mall.

It was the largest, most notoriously grand commercial establishment in the city, an empire of luxury owned by the famously cold and intensely handsome billionaire, Gael Thorne. Rumors always painted him as an arrogant, ruthless bachelor, a man who possessed a face carved by the gods and an empire that spanned the globe. I didn't care about the billionaire or his mall; I just needed a place to hide.

I dragged my exhausted body through the bright, polished halls and slipped into a quiet, secluded café tucked away in a high-end corner of the building. The rich scent of roasted coffee beans and warm pastries hung in the air, offering a fleeting sense of normalcy. I ordered a cappuccino, slumped into a heavy chair at a small table near the corner window, and stared blankly at the frothy surface of my drink. The moment the ceramic cup touched my hands, the dam broke. Hot tears fell silently, splashing into the coffee. I agonized over the impending, heavily orchestrated marriage my family was forcing upon me. How the hell was I supposed to officially stop it now? Would my father even believe me if I showed him the proof, or did I need to make everything viral just to be heard?

Suddenly, the café door swung open, and my heart skipped a frantic, panicked beat.

Zack and Todd swaggered into the room. They were Derek’s closest friends, the same arrogant men who had always hovered around my relationship. Worse, Zack was my innocent high school crush—the very boy Chloe had gleefully weaponized to destroy my reputation years ago. Panic flared in my throat. I immediately ducked my head, hunching my shoulders to hide behind the collar of my coat, praying to any listening god that they wouldn't look my way.

They didn't. They grabbed a table barely two spots away from me, settling into their chairs with loud, booming laughter that grated against my raw nerves. I tried to block them out, but their voices carried effortlessly through the quiet café.

"Clara has always been a complete moron," Zack chuckled cruelly, the clinking of his spoon against his mug echoing in the space. "She never even noticed that Derek and Chloe were actually in love this whole time. Stupid blind brat. Now that Chloe is back in town, she’ll be shacking up with me for a while to keep the heat off."

Todd threw his head back and laughed loudly in agreement. "Hey, it works perfectly for us, Zack. Derek played it smart. He handled Clara right after you goofed up with her in high school. Once he legally secures her inheritance, our financial futures are completely set."

My breath hitched. I froze in my seat.

"Are the papers ready?" Zack asked, his voice dripping with greed.

"Our contracts with Derek are already drafted and waiting," Todd stated explicitly, his tone brimming with arrogant triumph. "The exact moment her trust fund money clears into his accounts, we sign. Our startups get the funding we need. Cheers to having only a month left before we say a final goodbye to the bitch!"

They clinked their glasses together, their sinister laughter piercing straight through my chest.

My blood turned to absolute ice. My grip on the coffee cup tightened until my knuckles turned stark white and the ceramic groaned under the pressure. The sheer horror of their words dawned on me like a physical blow to the head. This wasn’t merely a betrayal of romantic love. Derek, Chloe, Zack, and Todd hadn't just made a fool of me—they had been operating a massive, coordinated financial conspiracy behind my back since high school. Every smile, every comforting word Derek had ever offered me was a calculated move to drain my family's wealth.

Crushing despair evaporated in a split second, replaced by an explosive, blinding fury. The sheer audacity of these men sitting mere feet away, openly celebrating my financial ruin and emotional destruction, ignited a violent fire in my veins.

Driven by pure, unadulterated rage, I forcefully pushed my chair back. It screeched against the floorboards. I turned sharply to march over there and confront them, to scream that I knew everything.

But I didn't make it a single step.

I instantly collided with a solid, unyielding wall of muscle. A pair of large, incredibly strong arms shot out and gripped me firmly, stopping my momentum before I could fall backward. I gasped, craning my neck up to apologize, but the words died instantly in my throat.

I was staring up at a towering, strikingly beautiful man dressed impeccably in a dark pinstripe suit. He possessed a sharp, aristocratic jawline and broad shoulders that completely blocked out the café lights. But it was his eyes that trapped me—dark, intense, and glowing with an unreal, commanding authority that made the air around him crackle with heavy tension. He looked like a king who could level a city with a single word.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement. The loud screech of my chair had drawn attention. Zack and Todd had stopped laughing. They were staring directly at me, their eyes widening in sudden recognition.

A reckless, desperate plan ignited in my mind. If I wanted to completely shatter the arranged marriage, if I wanted to ruin Derek's pristine image and stop my family from handing over my inheritance, I needed a public scandal. I needed something massive, undeniable, and utterly shameful by my father's strict standards.

Without giving myself a single second to overthink the absolute insanity of my actions, I reached up, grabbed the lapels of the handsome stranger’s expensive suit, and forcefully pulled him down. I pressed my trembling lips tightly against his.

A low, vibrating growl rumbles deep from his chest. It was a guttural, masculine sound that sent a heavy shockwave straight down my spine. His large hand immediately shot out, gripping my waist with an aggressive, territorial protectiveness that anchored my body flush against his hard frame.

Pulling back just a fraction of an inch, I hastily whispered against his mouth, my breath ghosting over his lips. "Please. Keep up the act for just a minute."

To my profound shock, he didn't shove me away. He didn't call me crazy. Instead, his iron grip on my waist tightened drastically, his fingers digging into my hips. He leaned down and kissed me back with an overwhelming, passionate command. There was no hesitation. His mouth moved over mine with brutal confidence, his tongue parting my lips and invading my mouth with a raw, consuming heat that instantly weakened my knees. The entire world blurred into nothingness. The sheer force of his kiss was a heavy, intoxicating weight, completely erasing the café, the betrayal, and the furious men sitting nearby. I had to clutch the front of his shirt just to keep myself from collapsing against him.

When we finally broke apart, my chest heaved as I gasped for air. My lips felt bruised and swollen, tingling from the aggressive friction.

The entire café had gone dead silent.

I glanced sideways. Zack and Todd were staring at us, their mouths hanging wide open in utter disbelief. The shock on their faces was entirely worth the reckless gamble.

"Could you please walk out with me?" I asked the towering stranger softly, trying to steady my shaking voice. "I want them to clearly see my defiance."

The stranger didn't look at them. His intense, dark eyes remained locked onto mine, studying my flushed face with an unnerving, predatory stillness. "Do you want me to make them disappear from the face of the earth?" he asked seriously. His voice was a rich, dark timber that carried no trace of a joke.

My mouth dropped. A spike of genuine fear pierced through my lingering adrenaline. Had I just grabbed and kissed a literal mafia boss?

"N-no!" I stammers out a nervous refusal, shaking my head rapidly. "No, please."

He didn't ask twice. His large hand slid down from my waist and tightly grabbed my wrist. He turned and purposefully led me toward the glass doors of the café. His strides were long and powerful, forcing me to jog slightly to keep up.

As we stepped out into the massive, brightly lit corridor of the mall, I glanced back over my shoulder. My stomach plummeted. Zack and Todd had violently shoved their table aside, jumping up to aggressively chase us. Their faces were twisted in ugly, threatening scowls.

Panic seized my chest. If they caught me now, they would drag me back to Derek. They would force me into silence.

I pulled closer to the tall stranger, my fingers desperately digging into the sleeve of his pinstripe suit. "Please," I whispered urgently, my voice cracking with sheer terror. "Help me. Hide me for a few hours. They're coming."

The stranger stopped and shot me a dark, cutting look. The intensity in his gaze made me want to shrink back. "You shouldn't trust strangers," he warned me in a low, rough voice that vibrated with an underlying threat.

I swallowed hard, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. I had no response to that. He was right. But then, right as the fear threatened to consume me, his hard gaze suddenly softened.

"But I'll save you," he promised.

Acting purely on blind instinct, I nodded. I allowed him to pull me away from the main promenade, quickly leading me down a hidden, dimly lit private hallway that I had never noticed before. The sounds of the bustling mall faded instantly. At the very end of the corridor stood a set of sleek, mirrored elevator doors.

There were no buttons. The man simply raised his hand and pressed his bare palm flush against a sleek security panel embedded in the marble wall. A soft chime echoed in the quiet space, and the mirrored doors slid open silently.

I looked back just as we stepped inside. Zack and Todd rounded the corner at the far end of the hallway, their eyes locking onto me with furious intent. They sprinted forward, shouting my name.

The stranger didn't even flinch. The mirrored doors slid shut silently, locking with a definitive click, severing the encroaching noise and completely cutting off Zack and Todd just as they closed in.

The heavy silence of the enclosed space was deafening. My heart pounded furiously against my ribs as the high-speed elevator immediately began to rise, the sheer acceleration pressing me slightly into the floor.

I looked up at the massive man standing beside me, still gripping my wrist. "Where are we going?" I whispered, a terrified, shaky question escaping my lips.

He slowly turned his head, his dark eyes burning into mine with an intensity that made my skin flush all over again.

"To my penthouse," he declared, his voice a low, absolute command. "You will be completely safe there."

Miraculously, despite the endless traumas of the day, despite the devastating lies I had just uncovered from the people I had known for years, I actually believed his promise. I was ascending in a private elevator with a powerful, mysterious stranger, and for some inexplicable reason, I trusted him to keep me safe.
