He Is Not Arthur

Clara took a deep, steadying breath as she stepped through the towering, heavy glass doors into the splendid, awe-inspiring lobby of the Kensington International building. The sheer scale of the place was staggering. Pristine, high-gloss marble floors stretched out like an ice rink, reflecting the dazzling modern chandeliers that hung from the vaulted ceilings. High-powered executives marched purposefully past her, phones pressed to their ears, radiating an aura of untouchable wealth.

Despite the overwhelming environment, Clara stood tall. She was impeccably clad in a sharp, perfectly tailored professional suit. It was a thoughtful necessity considerately, yet silently, arranged by her aloof husband, Arthur. When he had handed it to her earlier, insisting she wear it and promising she could pay him back once she secured the job, she had been floored. For a man who barely spoke and seemingly possessed no money of his own, he had somehow utilized his vague fashion industry connections to procure a suit that made her look like a million bucks. The aloof man who did not seem to know how to smile, laugh, or even carry a casual conversation had proven to be shockingly considerate.

She crossed the lobby, her heels clicking authoritatively against the marble, and was swiftly escorted to the private elevators. The first fifteen floors of the mammoth skyscraper were dedicated to Kensington's luxury hotel operations, while the sixteenth through twentieth floors served as their elite corporate headquarters. Escorted swiftly up to the daunting twentieth floor, the elevator doors chimed and slid open to reveal a stunningly modern reception area. A polished assistant with a welcoming smile immediately stood up.

"Clara Whitmore?" the woman asked, moving forward to offer a warm handshake as soon as Clara nodded. "Right this way, please."

Clara followed the assistant down a wide, ocean-blue carpeted hallway, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Throughout the night, she had kept dreaming about this exact moment—dreaming about the financial security, the food she could finally afford to put on her table, the clothes she could shop for. She was ushered into the grand, modern office of the Vice President, Nolan Pierce.

To Clara's immense surprise, Nolan was not the intimidating, grey-haired corporate shark she had expected to find lurking behind the massive mahogany desk. Instead, a remarkably young, incredibly charming man in his mid-twenties immediately stood up as she entered.

"Clara Whitmore? I am Nolan Pierce. Nice meeting you," he greeted, offering a smooth, practiced smile that reached his bright eyes.

"Hello, Nolan," Clara replied, flashing her best, most confident smile while returning his firm handshake. She couldn't help but find it slightly odd that a high-ranking Vice President of Kensington International had left his seat just to greet a mid-level applicant, but she pushed the thought aside.

Nolan gestured for her to sit in the plush leather chair opposite his desk before taking his own seat. He steepled his fingers, his charming demeanor remaining perfectly intact. "So, Clara. After going through your CV, we kind of… could not bring ourselves to hire you for the former position."

Clara’s stomach plummeted. The rejection stung sharply, a cruel reminder of the corrupt nepotism that had favored Brianna just yesterday. But before she could even process the disappointment, Nolan smoothly continued, completely bypassing the lower-level rejection.

"But I assure you, for this new position, you will thoroughly enjoy working with us. We need someone who is highly competitive and can handle our upcoming, highly anticipated project. We are launching a massive chain of all-female coffee shops. Female managers, female waitresses. In short, an all-female staff. This project is going to be our baby, and we need the absolute best to head it."

Clara’s heart resumed its frantic drumming, this time swelling with sheer, unadulterated excitement. State Head Manager? It was a vastly more powerful role than she had ever dared to dream of.

Nolan picked up a thick, intimidating file and slid it across the polished mahogany desk toward her. "Here is the contract. Go through all the rules, Ms. Whitmore. Everything is written there in black and white."

As Clara opened the heavy document, her eyes scanning the dense legal jargon, Nolan's tone abruptly shifted. The charming warmth vanished, replaced by an uncharacteristically deadpan and strict edge.

"But let me tell you one thing," Nolan stated, his voice dropping a fraction. "The last condition states that if you plan to leave us before a mandatory two-year duration, you will immediately pay us a two-billion-dollar penalty. Or, you could be sent to jail."

Clara’s heart violently skipped a beat. Two billion dollars? Jail? The astronomical numbers were terrifying, completely unprecedented for a managerial role.

Nolan Pierce didn't miss a beat, his expression carefully neutral as he explained the singular, terrifying stipulation buried in the fine print. "We are putting so much effort, capital, and trust into facilitating our staff for this empowerment program that we simply cannot fathom all our finances and energy going to waste. So, we will be needing some kind of absolute guarantee or assurance of your loyalty."

Desperate for the guaranteed financial stability that would finally allow her to fight back against Derek and Brianna's treacherous betrayal, Clara didn't even hesitate. She thought of her stolen apartment. She thought of her hijacked workspace. After securing this lucrative job, she would be more financially stable than Derek and Brianna combined. She would finally have the power to drag them to court and reclaim everything they had stolen from her.

"I am in, Mr. Pierce," she said with absolute conviction.

She picked up the heavy, gold-plated pen resting on the desk, pressing it to the paper and signing the thick document without a single second thought. As the ink dried on her legally binding signature, she could have sworn she heard the powerful Vice President let out a very faint, deeply relieved sigh.

Nolan immediately stood up, rounding his desk to offer another handshake. "Congratulations, Ms. Whitmore. Welcome on board. I will have my assistant, Mrs. Sylvia, give you a comprehensive tour of the office."

The absolute moment Clara was escorted out of the grand room by the smiling assistant, the charming facade melted off Nolan's face. He practically lunged across his desk for his private, secure phone, rapidly punching in a direct number.

"Vance," Nolan breathed into the receiver, his voice tight with adrenaline. "The impossible is done. She has signed the contract." He leaned back in his leather chair, a victorious smirk playing on his lips. "Now don’t forget. You owe me what I asked for."

On the other end of the secure line, a heavy, commanding voice replied with absolute, chilling certainty. "I know. Don’t worry."

Right before disconnecting the line, Nolan’s careless, charming demeanor returned. He couldn't resist poking the bear. "And oh, Vance?"

"What is it now?" the heavy voice snapped.

"She is beautiful, man."

A sharp, deeply territorial warning hiss violently crackles through the speaker, radiating pure, possessive aggression. "You better stay away from her, dude."

Hours later, Clara arrived back at her tiny, cramped apartment riding an unparalleled high of euphoric spirits. The sheer magnitude of her triumph had her practically buzzing with electricity. The second she unlocked the front door and walked into the living room, she saw her husband sitting quietly on the worn sofa.

Driven by pure joy, she practically threw her arms around him. "Oh, Arthur! This goes for dinner and a toast. I am taking you tonight! You won't believe this!" she announced triumphantly, her face glowing with happiness.

He offered a small, quiet smile, his broad shoulders relaxing slightly under her enthusiastic grip. Clara opened her mouth to excitedly detail the unbelievable perks of her new corporate job when her grand celebration was abruptly interrupted by the shrill, demanding ringing of her phone.

Seeing the caller ID flash with her best friend Tessa's name, Clara's grin widened. "It's my friend!" she beamed.

Showing a surprising amount of respect and consideration, the man she knew as Arthur quietly stood up and retreated into the bedroom, closing the door softly behind him to grant her privacy.

Clara stayed planted in the middle of the small living room, eagerly answering the call. "Oh, Tessa! Oh Gosh, I am so happy to hear from you."

After a brief, hurried catch-up about Tessa's mother, Clara could no longer contain her massive news. She excitedly, breathlessly detailed the unbelievable reality of her highly lucrative new corporate job at Kensington International. She told Tessa about the massive salary, the luxury accommodation, and the private chauffeur.

"I am so happy for you, Clara," Tessa said, her voice thick with emotion. Clara could tell her best friend was practically on the verge of crying from relief.

Clara’s racing, excited tone softened with profound, genuine gratitude. "This is because of you, Tessa. You lifted me up when I was at my absolute lowest and arranged a groom on such incredibly short notice. You were so right when you said that he is smoking hot." Clara giggled lightly, glancing fondly toward the closed bedroom door. "But oh. So bad that he is gay. And—"

"Clare!" Tessa’s violently alarmed, shrieking voice aggressively cut through the phone line, halting Clara dead in her tracks. "What are you talking about?"

Clara let out a confused, airy laugh, completely oblivious to the rising panic on the other end. "I am talking about Arthur, silly. The one who was supposed to meet me at Ruby's Diner for the marriage arrangement..."

"OH.MY.GOD! Clare, where are you?" Tessa demanded, her voice suddenly cracking with sheer, unadulterated terror.

Clara frowned, her smile faltering as a strange, cold sensation prickled at the base of her neck. "Why? I… I am at my apartment, naturally." She tried to laugh it off again, though it sounded incredibly forced.

"Honey. Run. Get away from that place right NOW!" Tessa screamed, hyperventilating into the receiver.

Utterly confused, Clara shifted her weight uneasily. "What do you mean by that? And why do you sound so angry?"

"I am not angry, silly! I am terrified!" Tessa’s frantic explanation proceeded to completely and violently shatter Clara's entire world. "Arthur is my friend’s friend. He had a terrible, catastrophic car accident on that very morning when he was supposed to meet you at the diner! I only just found out!"

"Tessa," Clara whispered, her lungs suddenly feeling too tight. "How is that possible? It could just be a minor accident, and he..."

"Don’t be stupid, Clare!" Tessa pleaded, her voice dripping with absolute horror. "He was critically injured. He is currently lying in a hospital bed. He is entirely unresponsive and trapped in a deep coma! He is not Arthur. He is someone else!"

A tidal wave of pure, icy panic instantly flooded Clara's senses. The euphoric triumph from just moments ago rapidly deteriorated into sheer, paralyzing terror. Her wide, terrified eyes involuntarily darted toward the closed bedroom door. Behind that thin piece of wood was the man who had bought her a suit. The man she had just hugged.

She stood perfectly frozen in the center of the living room, every single nerve ending in her entire body going completely numb as Tessa continued screaming frantically through the speaker. Clara couldn't hear the words anymore. A loud, rushing static filled her ears.

The phone slowly slipped from Clara's suddenly strengthless grasp, hitting the hardwood floorboards with a loud, hollow clatter that echoed mockingly in the quiet apartment.

Arthur had never reached the diner. He was in a coma.

The horrifying, undeniable truth crashed over her in a suffocating wave of profound betrayal and dread: she had legally married a complete, absolute stranger. An imposter who was currently living inside her home, sleeping in her bed, and casually enjoying the meals she cooked.

That son of a b*tch!
