Crossing the Line

-Miles-

We bolted in the opposite direction, abandoning any shred of pride. We sprinted desperately toward wolf territory, our boots tearing up the damp earth. We didn't give a damn about enemy lines right now; facing an entire pack of hostile wolves felt like a joke compared to the unseen monster actively hunting us.

Just as we forcefully crossed the invisible boundary line, the air warped around me. Before I could defend myself, the beast violently snatched my torso out of nowhere. The impact was like slamming into a solid brick wall. Invisible limbs clamped around me, completely crushing the breath from my burning lungs. The pain was blinding, sharp, and immediate as my ribs groaned under the immense pressure. Every frantic attempt to suck in air was met with a tighter, suffocating squeeze.

I surrendered to the darkness creeping at the edge of my vision. Genuinely, I felt a sick sense of relief. If my death bought Vaughn and Damon the precious seconds they needed to escape, it was a fair trade. But suddenly, the pressure vanished. I hit the hard ground with a heavy, bone-rattling thud. The beast had dropped me.

Looking up through the dirt, my heart sank. They hadn't run at all. Vaughn rushed over and hoisted me up by my arm, but my brief surge of relief completely shattered. A sickening, unmistakable crack of heavy bones snapping echoed violently through the woods. Then, a faint whimper pierced the night.

Damon. The creature now had Damon in its grasp, crushing him right in front of us.

"No!" I roared, trying to launch myself forward at the empty space to save him. But Vaughn physically restrained me, his massive hands clamping down on my shoulders. He yanked me back, giving the absolute signal for an immediate retreat.

"Leave him! Run!" Vaughn barked, his voice laced with pure survival instinct.

I couldn't move. Paralyzed by the devastating thought of losing the man who had been an older brother figure to me, I stood frozen. But Vaughn’s authoritative rank weighed heavily on me; I still couldn't defy a direct order from a superior. With an agonizing, tearing pain gripping my heart, I let him physically drag me away. We ran deeper into enemy lines, leaving Damon behind.

Moments later, paws thundered against the earth. A large pack of border patrol wolves erupted from our left, their fangs bared and snarls ripping through the air. Vaughn took a defensive stance, but I saw a desperate, reckless opportunity.

I explicitly ignored Vaughn's commanding shout and sprinted back toward the spot where Damon had fallen. It was a cruel, manipulative plan, but I knew the invisible beast was bound to attack the wolves on their own territory anyway, creating a massive, chaotic distraction.

The wolves swerved, chasing after me with lethal intent. Vaughn cursed loudly and bounded right behind me. We reached the clearing where Damon lay immobile, entirely battered, and barely breathing. We grabbed his heavy body just as the hostile wolf pack blindly engaged the invisible demon.

The creature overpowered the wolves in mere moments. It was a slaughter. The invisible beast tossed the massive wolves around like ragdolls, their yelps filling the air. Seeing his pack heavily bleeding and completely outmatched, the wolf leader realized they were fighting a losing battle. He signaled a frantic retreat, gesturing urgently with his bloodied muzzle for us to follow them.

Panic-stricken and running on pure adrenaline, we didn't hesitate. We carried Damon’s heavy body deeper into enemy lines, matching the retreating wolves' frantic pace. I kept checking over my shoulder, searching for a distortion in the air, terrified the monster was right on our heels.

Finally, we reached a wide clearing. A modern, well-lit medical facility stood tall, looking vastly different from our ancient Lycan castles. The building was heavily guarded by a defensive, snarling line of wolves willing to hold the perimeter. They parted just enough to let us through before snapping their ranks shut.

We burst inside the chaotic emergency room. A wide-eyed female doctor immediately sprinted over to help us, directing us to an empty gurney. We hauled Damon onto the mattress, and I completely collapsed against the wall, my legs giving out entirely. I desperately fought the heavy pull of unconsciousness, my chest heaving.

Through my blurred vision, I watched Damon’s bloodied face look up at the beautiful doctor leaning over him. The chaotic noise of the room faded away entirely as I listened intently. I watched his torn lips move.

"Mate," he whispered.

My eyes widened in pure, unadulterated shock. Did I hear that right? A wolf doctor was Damon’s fated mate?

Before my exhausted brain could even process the absolute magnitude of that revelation, the heart monitor connected to his chest flatlined with a piercing, continuous screech. A solid green line.

"No!" I forced my failing, broken body to stand beside his bed, terrified I was losing him.

The beautiful doctor grabbed the defibrillator paddles. "Clear!" she yelled, shocking his still chest. His body jerked off the bed.

Nothing. The monitor kept screaming.

She shocked him again. And a third agonizing time. Finally, the steady beeping of a faint pulse returned. The medical team quickly swarmed the bed, wheeling him away to the operating room. As they disappeared, the last drop of my adrenaline completely vanished, and I finally blacked out on the cold, sterile floor.

“Damon…” I rasped, my throat feeling like sandpaper, when I finally came to.

I was in a soft hospital bed, an I.V. hooked into my arm. Vaughn was sitting nearby, violently tearing medical adhesive tape with his teeth to stubbornly bandage his own bleeding arm.

“He’s in surgery. That doctor took him about two hours ago,” he said gruffly, standing up to hand me a desperately needed, cool glass of water.

“Why don’t you let them take care of that for you? It looks like shit,” I asked, gesturing to his messy bandages.

Vaughn shot me a deeply stern, unyielding look. “We’re in enemy territory, kid. None of those mutts is coming close to me if I can help it.”

He then leaned in closer, his demeanor turning intensely menacing and demanding. “What did he tell her?” he asked, his grey eyes narrowing.

I immediately acted dumb, shaking my head. “I couldn’t hear him.”

I knew the dangerous truth. If I told him the wolf doctor was Damon’s fated mate, Vaughn’s bitter, old-school, deeply ingrained hatred for cross-species breeding would probably make him lose his mind. He would try to burn this entire facility to the ground. Right now, Damon’s life was entirely in her hands, so I had to keep my mouth shut.
