Unwanted Encounters
POV: Harper
I dropped the heavy metal key into the front pocket of my jeans, making absolutely sure it was secure. Lily’s urgent warning about the magical wards locking at exactly ten o'clock played on a loop in my head. I definitely did not want to end up trapped out here in the dark. Leaving Maeve completely absorbed in her massive, ancient book back in our sage-scented room, I stepped out into the dim hallway.
The moment the heavy door clicked shut behind me, the overwhelming chaos of the day came rushing to the surface. I was desperate for a quiet moment alone to finally process this impossible reality. I kept my head down as I walked, listening to the soft padding of my socks against the freezing stone floor. My mind raced uncontrollably, stumbling over the absurd truths I was somehow supposed to just accept.
Werewolves.
Lycans.
Prince freaking Declan.
I shook my head, muttering under my breath as I wandered down the narrow, stone-floored hall in search of the showers. The ancient portraits lining the walls seemed to watch my every move, their painted eyes far too aware for my liking. Distracted by my swirling thoughts, I completely missed the wooden door I was supposed to be looking for. I turned abruptly, taking a blind step forward, and crashed face-first straight into a solid wall of heat and muscle.
"Ow—" I gasped, stumbling backward as the impact violently jolted my teeth. My canvas toiletry bag nearly slipped entirely from my numb fingers. "Sorry, I didn't—"
The frantic apology died instantly in my throat.
It was him.
The Lycan Prince.
Declan was damp from a recent workout, his dark shirt clinging tightly to the broad, heavy muscles of his chest. His hair was slightly tousled, the ends dark with sweat, and his piercing storm-gray eyes immediately pinned me in place. The sheer physical presence of him stole the air right out of my lungs.
We stood there in a tense, heavy silence that stretched on for far too long. Neither of us moved. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs.
Finally, he broke the silence, his voice flat and unreadable. "You again."
I tried to catch my breath from the impact, clutching my bag against my chest. "Me again," I muttered, cursing how breathless I sounded.
He didn't blink. He just stared down at me, his jaw set like carved granite. "Why are you wandering around an off-limits wing?" he sternly demanded, his tone quiet but dangerously sharp.
I blinked, nervously looking back down the dim corridor. "I'm not trying to break any rules. One of my roommates said this was where the showers were. I'm just trying to find the shower and survive my first day without getting eaten by your classmates."
At my words, Declan’s nostrils flared. He deliberately leaned in, taking in my scent. For a terrifying second, I thought he was going to snap at me, but surprisingly, his tense, broad shoulders dropped a fraction. The aggressive edge in his posture softened just enough for me to notice.
Testing the statement aloud, he murmured, "You're not like the others."
"Yeah, I've been getting that vibe," I swallowed hard, my throat incredibly dry.
He leaned in just close enough for me to catch his scent. It wasn't cologne. It was an overpowering, raw scent of cedarwood, smoke, and rain that wrapped around my senses and made my head spin. He looked down at me, his storm-gray eyes stripping away every defense I had, and stated with absolute certainty, "You don't belong here."
The words hit me like a physical punch to the chest. It knocked the wind out of me, a brutal confirmation of my deepest fear. But instead of cowering under his intense gaze, a sudden spark of anger flared in my chest. I defiantly lifted my chin, forcing myself to hold steady.
"Maybe not," I replied, staring right back into his eyes. "But I'm here anyway."
Declan's storm-gray eyes locked intensely with mine, flickering with a confusing mix of frustration and genuine curiosity. The heavy tension in the narrow hall crackled like static electricity. He stared at me for a long moment before giving a gruff warning.
"Just… stay out of trouble."
"Define trouble," I asked sarcastically, unable to stop myself.
He let out a short, humorless breath—a harsh sound that was half laugh, half threat—and deliberately brushed past me. Long after the intense heat of his towering body faded from the cold hall, I stood frozen in place. My hands were shaking. Because for the first time all day, standing under his heavy gaze, I hadn't felt invisible. I had felt seen.
I finally found the correct door and practically threw myself into the blessedly hot shower. I stood perfectly still under the scalding stream, letting the water beat violently against my back. But no matter how hot the water was, it couldn't wash away the heavy encounter. Declan's harsh words echoed like thunder in my mind.
*You don't belong here.*
I knew that. I knew I didn't belong in a school filled with actual monsters. My parents thought they were giving me a fresh start. They were totally oblivious to the reality of the species declaration forms, probably assuming it was some pretentious private school quirk. They had no idea they had literally sent their human daughter into a predator's den. I pressed my hands against the slick tile, taking deep, shaky breaths as the hot water slowly began to turn lukewarm.
Eventually, I turned off the faucet. I dried off quickly, pulling my oversized hoodie over my head and slipping into my black leggings. Clutching my damp towel tightly against my chest, I opened the heavy bathroom door, hoping I could just slip back into my room unnoticed.
Stepping back into the chilly hallway, my hopes of safely reaching my bed vanished entirely.
Leaning casually against the stone wall, clearly waiting for me, was a girl. She had icy silver-blonde hair that tumbled perfectly down her shoulders and piercing violet-gray eyes that locked onto me the second I stepped out. Her aura was incredibly sharp, pressing down on the air in the hallway until it felt hard to breathe. Her absolute perfection was effortlessly terrifying. Her designer clothes and flawless posture made me feel like a filthy intruder standing in her castle.
I stopped dead in my tracks. I didn't need an introduction to know exactly who this was.
The girl stared at me, speaking with a voice as smooth and cool as silk. "You're Harper."
I swallowed hard, my fingers digging desperately into the damp fabric of my towel. I nodded slowly. "Uh... yeah. That's me."
The girl smiled, though the calculated warmth never reached her predatory eyes. "I'm Vivian," she introduced herself seamlessly, letting the silence stretch for a microsecond before dropping the executioner's blade. "Declan's mate."
I completely froze. My blood ran ice cold in my veins. Every single primal instinct inside my body started screaming at me, begging me not to turn my back. Vivian pushed off the wall with a lethal grace and took a single, deliberate step forward.
She kept her eyes violently locked onto mine. "I saw you talking to him," she stated calmly, her tone giving away absolutely nothing. "In the hall."
I swallowed the tight, suffocating knot of fear lodged in my throat. "I bumped into him," I corrected her quickly, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts to keep it steady. "Literally. It wasn't a conversation."
Vivian slowly tilted her head to the side, her flawless expression dripping with pure condescension. "Mhm. I'm sure."
Clutching my damp towel like a pathetic shield, I was forced to stand entirely still and watch helplessly as Vivian took another predatory step closer, closing the distance between us in the isolated, empty corridor.
