The Creek Encounter
ELARA POV
I couldn’t really argue with Lyra. After the intense encounter I just had, a run was exactly what we needed to clear our minds and burn off this lingering, restless energy. In my old pack, I had to be incredibly careful with shifting. I typically did it completely alone, hidden away from prying eyes. My mother was always so severely concerned about others seeing a red wolf. She never really explained the full truth of why, but she always insisted with a frantic, desperate fear in her eyes. She forced me to hide my red fur at all costs, keeping us isolated out of pure fear. I was only able to run with my brother if he ran through the forest first to scout for anyone else. I managed to get out on my own a few times over the years, but I always kept to myself, hugging the darkest shadows.
I hadn't let Lyra go for a proper run since we arrived at this new pack. I could feel her practically vibrating under my skin.
‘We need to get to the forest line first, but let’s go,’ I told her internally.
I started off, walking purposefully along the sprawling open field toward the back of the residential houses. Although there was some wooded space immediately behind the properties, the trees were not nearly thick enough for me to feel completely safe shifting. I needed deep cover. Lyra and I kept bantering back and forth as my boots crunched over the dry grass. After I lost my family, Lyra became my only true companion. Wolves were always a part of us, but Lyra’s unwavering mental support helped pull me through the absolute darkest times of my life. I genuinely enjoyed these internal conversations. They grounded me, helping to take my mind off the negative memories that constantly haunted me.
After walking at a brisk pace for about twenty minutes, I finally came along the thick edge of the deeper forest. I wasn't far from the spot where they held the bonfire yesterday. The air here smelled heavily of pine needles and damp earth. I walked about fifty feet deep into the brush, moving completely away from the visible tree line. I knew that there were heavily armed patrols active in the area, but most were stationed much further within the dense forest, protecting the outermost perimeter of the territory.
‘This looks like a good place,’ I said to Lyra, scanning the thick canopy of leaves above us. ‘Let me take my clothes off first. I actually like this outfit and we need to have clothes to wear when we walk back to the house later.’
I quickly stripped off my jacket, pulling my shirt over my head and dropping my pants to the forest floor. Standing completely naked in the cool, crisp forest air, I closed my eyes and allowed Lyra to surge forward. I released my iron grip on my human form and let the shift take over.
Bones cracked and reformed in rapid succession, muscles tearing and rebuilding as my spine elongated. The familiar, intense heat rushed over my skin as thick fur sprouted. Within seconds, I was standing on four paws, the dirt soft beneath my pads.
“Damn, that feels good!” Lyra yelled in my head, her voice echoing with pure, unfiltered joy.
She vigorously shook out her strikingly deep red fur, the thick coat ruffling in the breeze. I have always found Lyra’s wolf form to be absolutely beautiful. She is a true, vibrant red. It isn't a muted auburn or a muddy brown; it is a rich, striking crimson. There is a distinct hint of pure white fur along her paws, which creates a sharp, eye-catching contrast to the rest of her dark red body.
“Where should we go?” she asked eagerly as she immediately started trotting forward.
“Don’t go too far out into the unknown territory. Maybe just run parallel to the tree line for now. I don’t know where their designated patrol routes are, and I really don’t want to deal with explaining ourselves to armed guards today,” I told her.
I could feel her physical body shake in absolute agreement. She dug her claws into the dirt and took off. She ran and ran, her powerful leg muscles bunching and releasing with incredible speed. I simply sat back in our shared mind and fully enjoyed the visceral feeling of the wind whipping through our fur. She turned around a sharp bend of thick oak trees, and my ears twitched. I heard the distinct, rushing sound of running water.
“Let’s go check that out,” I urged her.
She seamlessly veered off her path, dodging around large boulders and fallen logs, heading straight toward the sound of the water. Lyra ran for only a few more minutes before she burst through a patch of ferns and was right upon the water's edge. A wide, clear creek ran steadily through the middle of the dense forest. Lyra padded over to the rocky bank, confidently walking right into the shallow creek until the cold water hit her knees. She turned around, lowered her large head, and took a long, greedy drink. I deeply enjoyed the freezing, refreshing feeling of the rushing water rushing over her white paws. I encouraged her to step out and sit along the water's edge. The sound of the creek bubbling over the smooth stones was incredibly peaceful.
“Let’s sit for a while,” I told Lyra.
She didn’t complain at all. I knew that she liked being near the water just as much as I did.
“I am going to go over to those large, flat rocks. You know I like sitting in the direct sun,” she replied.
She casually walked over, her wet paws leaving dark prints on the dry stone, and jumped up onto the massive boulders protruding from the bank. The stone was completely warmed by the late afternoon sun. We laid down, stretching our front legs out, and sat in absolute serene silence for several minutes, simply enjoying the last warm bits of the sun before it completely set below the tree line.
Suddenly, Lyra perked her ears up, her head snapping to the right. There was a distinct sound coming from about fifty feet away, further up the winding creek.
Relying entirely on her dramatically enhanced hearing, I asked her, “What is it?”
“I can’t see anything yet. There appears to be something heavy moving along the edge of the creek. Wait! I smell something,” she said, her mental voice dropping into a cautious, highly alert tone.
Just as she spoke the words, the thick bushes parted. I could clearly see a breathtakingly massive, strikingly beautiful black wolf step slowly into our line of sight. The fur was the absolute darkest color black I had ever seen, absorbing the fading sunlight like a void, with just a sharp, distinct hint of silver-speckled fur running along his broad chest. I had never seen a wolf with such intensely dark, flawless fur before.
The massive black wolf immediately looked up, locking onto us, his eyes eyeing me incredibly closely.
“What should we do?” I asked Lyra, a spike of anxiety hitting my chest. Running was absolutely not an option. One look at the sheer muscle mass of his shoulders and the thick width of his chest told me this was clearly a very powerful, highly dominant wolf. He would catch us in seconds if we bolted.
“I don’t recognize him,” Lyra said, peering at him carefully. Wolves can instantly identify each other's scents if they have met in human form first. We hadn’t met very many people from this new pack yet, and this wolf wasn’t anyone that we had crossed paths with before.
Sniffing the air deeply, his chest expanding, the black wolf padded slowly over to us. He didn't bare his teeth or drop his head aggressively. He simply walked over and sat down directly along the side of the sun-warmed rock we were currently laying on. Sitting right next to us, I could suddenly see the true, terrifying size of the wolf. Sitting up high on the rock, I usually felt large, but my physical size completely paled in direct comparison to him. Even while he was sitting down on the lower ground, the top of the black wolf's head was still taller than me.
Tilting his large head slightly, the black wolf continued to look at me intently, his gaze unwavering.
“I don’t think he is going to hurt us,” Lyra whispered in my mind, her initial anxiety rapidly bleeding away into curiosity.
“Do you see his eyes? They are so intensely blue that they are almost black. I have never seen a color that is that deeply dark but still visibly blue,” I noted, completely mesmerized.
The black wolf appeared to physically relax his massive frame. He opened his mouth slightly, letting his tongue hang out to the side in a calm, non-threatening manner.
Lyra had a highly puzzled look on her furry face, and I felt the exact same way internally.
“I wish I knew who he was,” I said. I looked directly into his eyes again. Faint gold and silver specks swirled deeply within his dark blue irises, catching the dying light.
The black wolf casually stood up, his massive muscles rolling under his black coat, and leaned over the running water, taking a long, slow drink. He then turned back, circled once, and laid completely down at the base of our rock, resting his heavy chin on his front paws.
“Should I lie back down?” Lyra was deeply puzzled by this behavior. Usually, strange wolves demanded submission or chased away unknown wolves.
“I think so. I don’t know what else we should do,” I replied.
She nodded her head in physical agreement and laid her chin back down on the warm rock.
We sat exactly like this for what felt like well over an hour. The sun had completely gone down behind the trees, making the surrounding forest quite dark and full of deep shadows. Surprisingly, I found it incredibly peaceful sitting alone in the woods with this massive black wolf. It was as if I could physically feel his internal energy. I had never, ever felt this specific sensation with another wolf in my entire life. I could vividly feel a radiant, humming energy pooling deep inside my chest, pulsing softly and radiating outward throughout my entire body. It was a deeply comforting, secure warmth.
“What is that feeling? I have never felt that before,” I asked Lyra, thoroughly puzzled by the intense sensation.
Lyra shook her head slightly. She didn’t know either. She was just as captivated by it as I was.
We looked down at the black wolf again. Suddenly, his dark blue eyes greyed over completely, turning into a solid, cloudy mist. I knew instantly that he was actively mind-linking and communicating with someone in the pack, which I naturally assumed was this territory's pack.
He stood up abruptly with a heavy huff, shaking out his black coat, and whined slightly, a low, unhappy sound in the back of his throat. He stepped closer to the rock. Using his large, wet snout, he affectionately nudged Lyra’s snout directly with his own. The physical contact sent a shocking jolt of warmth straight through my fur. Lyra instinctively rubbed the side of her head deeply along his neck in direct response, an intimate action equivalent to how two people would tightly hug each other. He seemed incredibly reluctant to leave, lingering for a heavy second, but he finally dropped his head and trotted away quickly, disappearing back into the darkening forest exactly the way he came.
“What was that?” I asked Lyra, my eyes still fixed heavily on the dark direction where the black wolf had just left.
“Elara, I honestly don’t know what to say. That energy feeling was so… strange. So intense. I have never felt anything like that while interacting with any other wolf before,” Lyra admitted, her tone clearly indicating she was just as confused and overwhelmed as I was.
“Let’s head back. It is getting very late, and it’s completely dark now,” I told her.
Lyra turned away from the creek and headed off at a fast trot, running back through the brush to the exact spot where we had left our clothes hidden. After ten minutes of navigating the dark woods, we were safely back at the pile of my clothes. Quickly, we initiated the shift back. The fur receded, bones cracked and snapped back into human proportions, and I stood up on two bare legs. I got fully dressed in the dark, pulling my shirt and pants on rapidly. We walked the rest of the way back to the house in total silence. Both of us were trapped in silent, heavy contemplation about the bizarre, intense interaction that we had just experienced with the black wolf.
Who was that?

ALPHA KAELEN POV
I had finally arrived home from meeting with the neighboring pack slightly earlier than I had initially anticipated. An Alpha naturally gets highly antsy and on edge when he is gone from his own pack territory for too long. Although I had officially only been gone for four long days, I had started feeling the intense, burning need to return to my pack boundaries by the second day.
“Alpha Kaelen, it is incredibly good to have you back!” Beta Varrick greeted me enthusiastically as I walked through the heavy front doors of the main packhouse. “How was your trip?”
Beta Varrick immediately frowned when he saw the dark, exhausted look heavily plastered on my face.
“It was fine, just entirely too long. I think I desperately need to go out on a run right now,” I muttered. I ran my hands aggressively through my hair, feeling completely and utterly on edge. The Alpha of the neighboring Celestia Pack had been seriously, critically injured in a recent violent attack, and his pack had desperately needed some strong outside guidance. While I had absolutely no problem stepping up and helping out an allied pack, I was deeply tired of being away from my own people, my own borders, for so long. The lingering stress of managing two territories was sitting heavily on my broad shoulders.
“I successfully set up the official meeting with Elara, the new female wolf who has been staying with Amara and Faelan for the last few months. She will be here at your office tomorrow at exactly one o'clock,” Beta Varrick informed me, easily filling me in on some of the mundane administrative events that had happened while I was gone. “I will leave you to your run now. Let me know via mind-link if you need absolutely anything.”
I nodded curtly, turned on my heel, and walked straight out the back doors of the packhouse. I moved quickly across the manicured lawn directly to the heavy tree line. I shed my clothes rapidly, throwing my shirt and pants onto a low tree branch, and started running forward. I gave mental control over to my wolf, Rovok. He howled loudly in my head in eager approval as the painful, familiar heat of the shift overtook our body. We hit the forest floor on four massive paws and started running incredibly fast, easily weaving in and out of the thick pine trees and leaping powerfully over large rocks. We ran aggressively all the way out to the far patrol line, mentally checking in on the armed guards before finally turning back around and running inward toward the packhouse.
“Why don’t we go down to the creek? It has been quite a while since we went there,” I urged Rovok internally.
It wasn’t hard at all to encourage him to continue running. He loved the physical exertion and growled deep in his chest in total approval, pushing our massive black legs to run even faster through the dense underbrush.
As we rapidly approached the winding creek, Rovok suddenly pulled up hard, his claws digging deep trenches into the dirt as he stopped dead in his tracks.
“Do you smell that? Who is that?” Rovok demanded, his internal voice filled with shock. He put his wet nose high up in the air and sniffed the wind again deeply.
Neither of us recognized the scent. It was an incredibly pleasant, remarkably intoxicating smell, like crushed wildflowers and fresh rain, and both Rovok and I instantly enjoyed the sweet scent filling our lungs.
Rovok cautiously moved forward, padding silently along the rocky edge of the creek until he could clearly see her sitting on a large boulder. A beautiful red wolf. I stood completely frozen in absolute shock. I have never seen a red wolf in my entire life. As far as I was currently aware, there were absolutely no red wolves left anywhere in the world, and there hadn’t been a single documented one for hundreds of years. The sheer color of her coat was striking. It was a true, vivid, deep red, not the standard auburn or muddy copper color that was often mistakenly noted for wolves. It was flawless, accented by striking white paws.
Approaching the beautiful red wolf slowly, we could instantly feel her intense, radiant energy. Her physical scent was utterly intoxicating, wrapping around my senses like a heavy drug. Both Rovok and I deeply liked being close
