The Ghost Scent

Ezra’s heavy fist pounded aggressively against the thick wood of King Cyrus’s bedchamber door, the rapid, booming thuds echoing sharply down the quiet stone corridor. It was almost noon, completely unlike the formidable Alpha King to sleep the entire day away. Receiving absolutely no answer from the silence inside, the Gamma of the royal guard lost his patience. He firmly gripped the brass handle, pushed his way inside, and immediately stopped dead in his tracks.

His nose instantly wrinkled in absolute, visceral disgust. The massive, opulent chamber profoundly reeked of stale booze, bitter sweat, and the heavy, undeniable musk of sex.

Ezra finally found the King passed out cold, sprawled haphazardly across the massive mattress. Cyrus was completely naked, his flaccid cock exposed against his thigh, his heavily muscled body slack and unresponsive to the harsh daylight streaming through the crack in the curtains. Lying entirely naked right beside the unconscious king was Daphne, the fiercely ambitious, ruthlessly calculating daughter of an elite Alpha council member.

The heavy thud of the door closing stirred her. The moment Ezra stepped further into the room, Daphne sat up, quickly pulling the rumpled silk sheets to cover her bare breasts and naked torso. She glared at the Gamma with fierce, deeply ingrained arrogance, her eyes flashing with a sense of stolen authority.

"Ezra, you should not disturb us," she haughtily demanded, her tone dripping with unearned superiority. She motioned toward the door. "Leave the room immediately."

Ezra simply scoffs at her pathetic attempt at authority, his arms crossing over his broad chest. "You shouldn't even be in here. I suggest you leave before he actually wakes up."

"Bastard," she hissed venomously. Realizing the Gamma wasn't going to budge a single inch, she rolled aggressively off the opposite side of the mattress, quickly gathering her discarded dress and undergarments from the floor in an indignant huff. She marched past him, her nose held high in the air.

"Satan," Ezra coldly retorts without missing a single beat.

Daphne stopped right in her tracks. She gaped at him in open, speechless shock, her jaw practically hitting the floor. "How dare you call me that! I am the daughter of an Alpha!"

Ezra leaned casually against the heavy wooden doorframe, a vicious, mocking smirk pulling at the corner of his lips. "You're right. It's offensive to Satan."

Daphne let out a loud, furious gasp. She finally finished scrambling into her wrinkled dress and fled the room, violently slamming the heavy door behind her.

Ezra simply stared at the pathetic, naked state of his passed-out King, completely unsure of how to handle the disastrous scene. A moment later, Gideon, the Beta of the royal guard, casually strolled into the chamber holding a steaming hot mug of black coffee.

"Oh man, what did the cat drag in?" Gideon asked, taking one look at the king.

"He didn't just drag it in," Ezra muttered, staring wearily at the bed. "He ate it, pooped it out, and covered it with sand."

Gideon didn't hesitate for a single second. "Well, rise and shine, sunshine!" he announced brightly. He set his coffee down, walked right past the bed, and disappeared into the adjoining bathroom. He emerged a few seconds later holding a heavy glass of ice water from the nightstand. Without a shred of mercy, he threw the freezing liquid directly into Cyrus's face.

Cyrus violently sprang up from the mattress. A feral, deeply aggressive growl ripped directly from his throat as his large fists drew up instantly, his naked body tense and completely ready to murder whoever had just attacked him in his sleep.

Gideon remained utterly unfazed by the lethal alpha aggression. He picked his mug back up and calmly sipped his coffee. "Oh good, you're up. Let's just consider it an early start to a much-needed shower."

"You smell like you decided to take a bath in a manure pile," Gideon added smoothly. "And since I smell heavy traces of Daphne in here… you might as well have."

"I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with the she-devil when I walked in," Ezra grumbled from the doorway.

The fight instantly drained from the king's body. "Whiskey," Cyrus groaned miserably. He dropped his heavy fists and sat on the edge of the mattress, aggressively rubbing his pounding, splitting temples as he reluctantly accepted the coffee mug Gideon held out to him. "A lot of whiskey. Enough to make me forget Daphne was Daphne, apparently."

"You do know she is going to be strutting around the palace halls today acting like she is already the queen now, right?" Ezra warned, shaking his head.

"Ughh," Cyrus groaned again, the sound vibrating with pure physical misery. He explained that a frustrating, entirely failed, multi-day rogue hunt along the northern border had driven him into a massive blackout drinking binge the absolute moment he returned to the palace. It was a colossal, sloppy mistake, and he knew full well the manipulative Daphne would soon exploit every single second of it. "I will deal with that later," he muttered, downing the hot coffee.

Feeling physically ill and deeply disgusted with his own skin, Cyrus dragged his heavy, aching body into the bathroom. He turned the dial all the way up, stepping under a half-hearted, scalding shower to violently scrub away the sticky stench of alcohol, sweat, and Daphne's sickeningly sweet perfume. He stood under the burning spray until his skin turned red, praying the water would wash away the massive regret clawing at his chest.

Wrapping a white towel low around his waist, Cyrus finally stepped out of the bathroom. He reached out and pulled open his heavy bedroom door to enter the main hallway.

The exact moment the heavy wood swung open, he froze dead in his tracks.

An intoxicating, enticing, completely unprecedented scent hit his heightened alpha senses. Strawberries and vanilla. It hung faintly in the stagnant air of the quiet corridor. He inhaled sharply, his chest expanding. It was old. It was decaying. But it was unmistakably, overwhelmingly potent.

A few agonizing heartbeats passed as he stood utterly paralyzed in the doorway. Then, absolute, terrifying clarity pierced directly through his thick, hungover mind.

His mate.

His fated mate had been here. She had been standing right outside this very door, breathing in the exact same air, while he was inside the bed violently entangled with Daphne.

Cyrus physically recoiled as if he had been shot in the chest. He swore aggressively under his breath, his eyes going wide with sheer, unfiltered horror.

"No! No! No!" he yelled, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated panic. He dropped his coffee mug entirely. He completely ignored the loud sound of the shattering ceramic and the hot liquid splashing across his bare shins as he sprinted frantically barefoot down the long palace halls. He tore through the corridors, practically throwing himself toward the heavy open double doors of the gardens.

But the absolute second he burst out into the cool morning air, the faint, sweet scent was completely snatched away, vanishing entirely into the rushing wind.

*Gid! Ezra! Find her!* he roared violently through the pack mindlink. His mental voice was heavily laced with a feral, terrifying panic that instantly put his commanders on absolute high alert.

The Beta and Gamma wasted absolutely no time. They immediately deployed the entirety of the heavily armed Royal Guard, violently barking orders to sweep the sprawling palace grounds, the kitchens, the perimeter gates, and every single inch of the royal territory.

But after agonizing hours of systematically scouring every bush, shadow, and exit, the guards returned empty-handed. Ezra and Gideon solemnly reported back that the mystery female was completely gone.

Utterly defeated, Cyrus slumped heavily into the massive leather chair behind the large desk in his private study. His hands shook slightly as he reached for a crystal decanter, pouring himself a fresh, neat drink. He could barely physically function through the crushing weight of his colossal mistake.

"I have to find her," he muttered thickly to the empty room, sheer horror washing over his broad shoulders in freezing cold waves. "But what if she heard me with Daphne? God, this is bad..."

Overcome by a sudden, violent surge of self-loathing and pitch-black despair, Cyrus gripped the crystal glass tightly in his large hand. With a devastating roar of alpha strength, he hurled it aggressively against the solid stone wall of the study. He watched with hollow eyes as the glass violently shattered into a thousand glittering pieces, the amber liquid staining the ancient stone.

He bent over his desk and buried his face deeply in his large hands, his fingers digging into his scalp. "I can't think of a worse way for my mate to find me. I don't even know who she is."

Taking immediate, clinical charge of the disastrous, spiraling situation, Gideon stepped forward. He ordered Ezra to aggressively pull the massive, leather-bound palace logbooks directly from the security gate.

A few moments later, Ezra dropped the heavy books onto the study table with a loud thud. Spreading the thick pages across the polished wood, the Gamma began rapidly skimming the meticulous records of absolutely everyone who had entered or left the palace grounds over the last twenty-four hours.

"Okay, let's see," Ezra muttered, his eyes darting across the ink. He systematically eliminated the maintenance crew, as they were exclusively male workers. He crossed out the king's younger brother's closest friends. Then, his finger stopped. He noted the massive influx of visiting Alpha families who had arrived at the palace early to prepare for the upcoming Leadership Training program.

"So more likely than not, she's in an Alpha family," Gideon deduced logically, pointing a thick, calloused finger at the long list of female names recorded at the bottom of the ledger.

Cyrus's raw alpha instincts immediately surged to the surface. A wild, desperate fire ignited in his eyes. He wanted to march directly into every single pack territory on the entire continent, violently ripping open their front doors until his nose caught that sweet scent of strawberries and vanilla again.

"I'm going to go to every one of those folds until I find her," Cyrus growled, his muscles bunching with anticipation.

But Ezra quickly shot the reckless idea down. "You could do that, but unannounced, erratic royal visits to sovereign packs would raise far too much suspicion. You would need a legitimate reason, or it will spark dangerous political rumors that the King is losing his mind."

Cyrus pushed himself up from the leather chair and began pacing the length of the study like a caged, starved animal. His heavy footsteps pounded against the thick rugs.

Watching his King slowly unravel, Gideon suddenly stepped into the path, offering a seamless, brilliantly strategic political solution. "Why don't we bring the folds here? Like an event. A grand ball, perhaps, for all the visiting Alphas and their families before the leadership training officially begins."

Cyrus stopped pacing instantly. He locked his desperate eyes squarely with his Beta's calm gaze. He agreed instantly, the suffocating desperation in his tight chest finally easing by a tiny, precious fraction. It was the perfect cover.

"Let's do that," Cyrus commanded, his voice hardening with newfound resolve.

"I will start the work immediately," Gideon replied, swiftly gathering the massive logbooks and exiting the study to begin drafting the massive preparations and the exhaustive guest lists.

Left alone in the quiet study, Cyrus leaned his heavy hands flat on the smooth mahogany of his desk. He dropped his head and let out a long, violently shuddering breath of profound relief. He was going to throw the grandest, most elaborate ball in wolf history.

He would find her. He absolutely had to.
