A Deal

Lyra POV

The morning sun barely pierced the horizon when I threw off my covers, my mind completely consumed by a single, unwavering objective: intercept Alpha Kaelen. Today was the grand opening of his massive new shopping center in Crownspire City, and it presented the perfect, perhaps only, opportunity to corner him before my impending doom with Varn became unavoidable.

I stood before my expansive closet, glaring at the chaotic array of garments hanging inside. In my past life, Vesper had relentlessly encouraged me to wear these brightly colored, flamboyant clothes. She wanted me to look exactly as I was back then—a naive, easily manipulated little girl playing dress-up. I reached out and violently pushed the neon pinks, ruffled skirts, and heavily sequined tops to the far end of the rack. I needed to physically shed that pathetic former image.

If I was going to stand before the most formidable Alpha in the realm and propose high treason against my own fiancé, I needed to project absolute maturity and unwavering confidence.

After digging through the back of my wardrobe, I finally settled on a sophisticated pale yellow dress. It was sleek, modest, and tailored perfectly to my frame without screaming for attention. To ground the look, I paired it with a sharp, dark gray half-jacket that squared my shoulders and added a layer of undeniable professionalism. I slipped my feet into matching gray heels and fastened a simple, elegant belt around my waist. Looking into the full-length mirror, I barely recognized the woman staring back at me. Gone was the bubbly, foolish teenager. In her place stood a woman forged in the fires of betrayal.

When I walked downstairs into the dining room, the clatter of silverware instantly ceased. My family and several high-ranking pack members were visibly taken aback by my sudden shift in style.

"Lyra," my mother breathed out, her coffee cup hovering halfway to her mouth. "You look... different."

"You look incredibly mature," one of our lead warriors chimed in, eyeing my sharp jacket with a hint of respect. "What's the special occasion?"

I offered a calm, practiced smile as I took my seat at the table. "I'm attending the grand opening of the new Crownspire City shopping center today. I realized it's time I start forming stronger, more professional relationships with the other high-ranking wolves. It will be vital for the pack's future business endeavors."

Hearing this, my father set his newspaper down. He looked at me, a slow, proud smile spreading across his weathered face. He knew exactly how much I used to despise interacting with upper-crust wolves. I used to hate the suffocating politics, the judging stares, and the pressure of being the Vaelwood Alpha's daughter. But looking at me now, he saw a daughter stepping up to her true potential. He had no idea the dark, bloody reasons driving this sudden change, but his pride warmed a small, broken part of my heart. I was fully ready for the battlefield that lay ahead.

The long drive to Crownspire City took just over an hour, but every passing mile brought back a sudden flood of strange, agonizing memories. I rested my head against the cool glass of the car window, watching the dense forests transition into towering steel and glass structures. Crownspire City was the Alpha King's bustling, powerful domain. In my past life, after Varn successfully manipulated his way onto the throne, this exact city had become my personal, inescapable prison. I remembered the cold marble floors of the palace, the suffocating isolation, and the terrifying realization that I was trapped in a gilded cage while my husband and best friend plotted my demise.

I forcefully pushed those dark, suffocating thoughts aside as my father's car pulled into the sprawling parking lot of Kaelen's luxurious new shopping center. The sheer scale of the architecture was staggering—a massive, gleaming monument meant to effortlessly showcase his pack's unimaginable wealth and dominance.

We arrived early to beat the massive crowd that was expected to flood the venue. A large public podium adorned with microphones and banners was set up in the central atrium, but scanning the immediate area, I quickly realized Alpha Kaelen wasn't standing anywhere near it.

I slipped away from my parents under the guise of looking at a storefront and approached a worker who was busy adjusting the audio cables near the stage.

"Excuse me," I said politely, projecting an air of authority. "I need to speak with Alpha Kaelen. Is he around?"

The worker wiped his brow and gestured vaguely toward the towering glass office building adjacent to the mall. "He's currently resting up in his private office before the speech. It's a packed schedule today, so he's strictly off-limits."

"I see. Thank you."

I returned to my parents, feigning a sudden, necessary trip to the restroom. The moment I was out of their line of sight, I altered my path. I completely bypassed the public facilities, dodged a pair of patrolling guards, and sneaked directly through a restricted set of double doors leading into his pack's local headquarters. My heart hammered against my ribs with every step I took down the plush, carpeted corridors, but my determination kept my feet moving forward.

As I rounded a corner into a highly secluded, private hallway, I suddenly froze. Walking directly toward me were two towering figures. One was Kaelen's Beta, his face buried in a tablet. The other was Alpha Kaelen himself.

Even in a simple tailored suit, Kaelen radiated a raw, suffocating power. His sharp jawline, piercing gaze, and relaxed yet predatory stride made him look every bit the lethal Alpha the rumors claimed him to be.

I squared my shoulders and stepped directly into the center of the hallway, successfully intercepting them.

His Beta immediately stopped, stepping forward to physically block my path. He plastered on a highly forced, polite smile reserved for annoying civilians. "I'm sorry, miss. The Alpha is very busy today. We don't have time for a meeting, but he might have time for a quick fan photo if you make it fast."

"I am not a fan," I cut him off sharply, my voice ringing clear and authoritative in the quiet hall. I looked past him, locking eyes directly with Kaelen. "My name is Lyra, daughter of the Vaelwood Alpha. And I am here to discuss a serious collaboration with Alpha Kaelen."

The Beta's forced smile instantly vanished. His eyes widened drastically as he finally placed my face. "You're Varn's newly announced fiancée," he said, taking a cautious step back as if I were holding a live explosive.

Kaelen looked highly amused by my sudden, brazen intrusion. He didn't look angry; he looked intrigued. He casually leaned his broad shoulder against the expensive wood-paneled wall, crossing his arms over his chest. "A serious collaboration?" he drawled, his voice a deep, resonant baritone that sent a strange vibration through the floor. "What kind of collaboration is Varn's innocent little bride possibly proposing to his biggest rival?"

I didn't back down. Rising slightly on my toes to close the remaining distance between us, I leaned in, ignoring the sharp glare of his Beta. I placed my face inches from Kaelen's ear and whispered the words I had been burning to say since I opened my eyes in this second life.

"I want your help taking Varn down."

Kaelen let out a low chuckle, pulling back to look at me. He smirked, openly mocking my dead-serious expression. "You really are the naive little princess I've heard so many rumors about," he said dismissively. "Listen to me carefully, little girl. If you're having a petty lover's spat because he didn't buy you the right ring, I advise you to deal with it yourself. And if this is some pathetic trap set by Varn to ruin my campaign, you need to be significantly more creative."

He uncrossed his arms and turned his massive back to me, clearly ready to walk away and dismiss me entirely.

As he moved, the agonizing, visceral memory of the ultimate betrayal from my past life surged violently within my chest. I felt the phantom pain of my flesh tearing, the cold, metallic sting of the blade, and the suffocating realization that I was being brutally murdered by my husband and my best friend while they laughed. My blood roared in my ears. The raw trauma shook my very bones.

"There have been unforgivable actions from Varn that I cannot disclose!" I shouted, the raw, shaking intensity of my voice echoing off the walls. I locked eyes with him as he slowly turned back around. "This is absolutely not a petty lover's spat! It is about my pack, my family, and everything I hold dear in this miserable world. He has to be destroyed."

Kaelen paused his exit. The mocking amusement completely vanished from his eyes, replaced by a sharp, calculating glint. He was an Alpha. He could smell the genuine depth, the dark truth, and the sheer desperation bleeding out of my raw emotional outburst.

Seeing him hesitate, I pressed my advantage hard.

"You desperately want to be the Alpha King," I stated matter-of-factly, taking a confident step toward him. "And I possess the exact means to help you achieve that."

Kaelen stepped much closer to me, his massive frame blocking out the overhead lights. His appraising, sharp gaze slowly and deliberately swept over my entire body, taking in my sophisticated clothes, my clenched fists, and the unyielding fire in my eyes.

"My pack is already incredibly powerful, little princess," he pointed out, his tone dangerously soft. "I have the wealth, the numbers, and the strength. Why would I possibly need you?"

Refusing to be intimidated by his towering proximity, I held my ground and laid out the cold political reality. "Because Varn will instantly become your absolute greatest threat once our two packs officially merge through marriage. His territory and my family's wealth will eclipse yours. You will lose the election."

He didn't blink. I pushed further, boldly pointing out his biggest flaw.

"Furthermore, your own unserious, reckless reputation precedes you. The elders don't trust you. But I can fix that. I promise you, once I become the undisputed Alpha of Vaelwood, I will put my pack's full financial and political support entirely behind you. I will personally reshape your damaged public image to guarantee your victory. I know exactly what scandals are coming for you, and I can stop them."

Kaelen silently considered this heavy proposition. The silence in the hallway was deafening. Slowly, a dark, predatory smirk spread across his handsome face.

"I'll admit, I'm interested," he stated, his eyes locking onto my face. "But your offer alone isn't quite enough to justify the immense political risk of allying with my enemy's fiancée. If I'm going to risk my entire campaign, I need absolute loyalty. I need a guarantee."

Pure desperation fueled my resolve. I had to secure this alliance. If I failed here, Varn would win again, and my family would die again.

"After what Varn has done to me, I will accept absolutely anything," I told him, my voice trembling with the sheer force of my hatred for my former husband. "I will agree to any terms you set. I only have one non-negotiable condition: I will never, under any circumstances, give up my pack's Alpha inheritance rights."

Kaelen stepped so close I could feel the heat radiating from his chest. His voice suddenly dropped to a low, dangerous rumble that sent a shiver straight down my spine.

"Anything?" he asked.

I held my ground, tilted my chin up, looked directly into his intense eyes, and confirmed, "Yes."

In a lightning-fast instant, he closed the remaining distance completely between us. His large hand dropped heavily to my waist, and he forcefully pulled my body flush against his hard frame. The sudden physical impact knocked the breath out of my lungs. I was trapped tightly against him, my body pressed against his chest.

Looking down at my parted lips with a dark, calculating hunger, he murmured, "If you are willing to do anything, then you must marry me instead, right after you successfully separate from Varn."
