Let The Game Begin
Morning sunlight crept relentlessly across the sprawling master bedroom, pulling Celia Ashford back from the edges of sleep into her cruel, isolating reality. She blinked against the glaring light, her thin frame shivering slightly beneath the heavy, luxurious blanket. For a fleeting second, the sheer chaos of the previous night felt like a fevered nightmare. But as her fingers slid across the cold, untouched expanse of the silky sheets beside her, the truth settled heavily in her chest. It was no dream. She was trapped in a nightmare of flesh and blood.
Turning her head, she stared at the empty side of the bed. Julian Sterling hadn’t returned at all last night.
A profound, almost dizzying wave of relief washed over her at the monster's absence. Yet, that fleeting comfort was instantly swallowed by a creeping, insidious dread. His absence didn't mean safety; the impending threat of him hung over her head like a razor-sharp knife suspended by a single, fraying thread. She pulled her knees to her chest, her mind a chaotic swirl. A part of her wanted to just survive and leave things as they were, but she knew she absolutely wasn't ready for a relationship. She definitely wasn't ready for a marriage to a deeply scarred, notoriously volatile billionaire who was originally meant to be her cruel sister’s fiancé. Would he punish her for her family's sudden bait-and-switch?
A stoic bodyguard waited for her in the hallway, his face an unreadable mask as he silently gestured for her to follow him downstairs. As they descended the grand, curving staircase, the extravagantly lavish details of the Sterling Villa pressed down on her. Glistening crystal chandeliers hung from every corner, casting fractured prisms of light across the pristine marble floors. Antique vases and priceless art lined the sweeping corridors. It was an overwhelming display of wealth, designed to render anyone speechless. Celia kept her gaze lowered, utterly unimpressed but highly intimidated by the suffocating opulence.
The bodyguard led her toward the expansive dining hall. As she stepped through the arched doorway, she completely froze. Her blood turned to ice in her veins.
Emerging casually from the state-of-the-art kitchen, carrying a silver tray laden with a steaming breakfast, was a tall, imposing figure. It was him. 'Nolan'. The exact same brazen man who had pinned her down and tried to force himself on her the previous night.
Panic and revulsion flared in her chest. Without a second thought, Celia immediately pivoted on her heel, desperate to flee the room and avoid interacting with this psycho altogether.
"Celia. Good morning," a magnetic, mocking voice called out, stopping her dead in her tracks.
The tone was light, yet laced with an undeniable undercurrent of arrogant command that made her skin crawl. She stiffened, slowly turning back to face him. He looked entirely too comfortable standing in the sunlight, completely unbothered by his vile behavior from hours ago. Deeply disgusted that this brazen man was practically living at his cousin's house, Celia pushed her thick, unflattering glasses higher up her nose. She refused to address him directly. Instead, she turned her attention entirely to the stoic bodyguard standing nearby.
"Is Mr. Sterling not here?" she asked bluntly, her tone flat.
The bodyguard shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting nervously toward Julian before settling back on Celia. He swallowed hard, clearly sweating under the pressure of the bizarre charade. "Mr. Sterling... he has been feeling quite unwell recently," the bodyguard stammered, poorly carrying on the farce. "He is currently sick in the hospital."
Celia stared at the brawny guard. Having spent her entire life feigning ignorance to survive beneath her older sister Helena’s oppressive, venomous shadow, she possessed a razor-sharp ability to read people. She had survived by making herself invisible, playing the fool while absorbing every detail of her hostile environment. She instantly saw right through the bumbling, transparent lie. The bodyguard was practically shaking in his expensive shoes.
Yet, knowing better than to expose a lie in a house full of dangerous men, Celia expertly played along. She widened her eyes slightly behind her thick lenses, adopting an innocent, mildly concerned expression. "Oh? Can I go to the hospital to visit my husband, then?"
"Now is not a good time," the bodyguard answered through gritted teeth, his face flushing at the blatant falsehood.
Celia simply nodded, letting the subject drop. If the bodyguard was going to such lengths to keep her away, she assumed Julian utterly despised her and wanted nothing to do with her. Honestly? That was fine by her. It saved her from dealing with a scarred tyrant and gave her some much-needed breathing room.
"Sit. Let's eat breakfast," Julian lightly commanded, setting the plates on the massive mahogany table.
Celia’s eyes flicked to the meticulously prepared food. There was no chef in sight yesterday, which meant this lunatic had cooked the meal himself. Wary of anything prepared by a man who treated boundaries like mere suggestions, she hesitated, keeping her distance.
Seeing her wariness, Julian leaned dangerously closer across the table. His dark eyes were steeped in an endless, suffocating gloom that made her blood run absolutely cold. "What's the matter?" he murmured, his voice dropping an octave. "Are you afraid I poisoned you?"
Celia stepped back involuntarily, her survival instincts screaming at her to put as much distance between them as possible. "Thank you for the food, but I am not hungry," she declined politely but firmly. Without waiting for a dismissal, she turned her back on him and walked briskly out of the dining hall.
She found the same bodyguard who had picked her up yesterday loitering awkwardly in the grand lobby.
"Excuse me," she approached him, offering a small, hesitant smile. "I need a favor. I didn't bring anything with me yesterday because everything happened so suddenly. Could you please give me a ride back to the Ashford Manor so I can gather my remaining sparse belongings?"
The bodyguard opened his mouth to reply, but before a single word could escape, a tall shadow fell over them both. 'Nolan' strolled out of the dining corridor, his broad shoulders relaxed, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his tailored trousers. He moved with the effortless grace of a predator who owned the territory.
Without warning, he stepped right into her personal space and brazenly wrapped a heavy, possessive arm around her thin shoulder. "Going home to pack?" he mocked, a wicked smirk playing on his perfectly carved lips. "It wouldn't make any sense to have the hired help drive you. Not when I am right here, more than willing to help my dear cousin's wife."
Celia felt a violently strong jolt of revulsion at his touch. She immediately swatted his hand away in pure disgust, taking a sharp step sideways. "No, thank you. I am fine riding with him," she firmly declined, glaring at 'Nolan' as if he were a festering wound. Why was this wealthy, arrogant brat obsessively hovering around his sister-in-law? Didn't he have a shred of basic decency or brain power?
"Mrs. Sterling," the bodyguard interjected hastily, practically sweating bullets as he sought an escape route from the incredibly tense situation. "Why don't you allow him to take you? I actually have a lot of pressing work to do around the estate. I won't be able to drop you off."
Before Celia could protest, the bodyguard bowed quickly and practically sprinted away down the hall, leaving her entirely alone with the man she despised.
Celia let out a long, heavy sigh of frustration. She was utterly trapped. With the villa situated high up on a remote mountainside, walking back to the city was impossible. She had absolutely no choice but to accept the ride from her tormentor.
Julian chuckled darkly at her defeated posture. "See? Was that so hard?"
She shot him a freezing glare and stomped toward the parking lot without another word.
The interior of the sleek black luxury car felt suffocatingly small the moment the doors clicked shut. Celia sat rigidly in the passenger seat, hyper-aware of the large, dangerous man behind the steering wheel. The drive began in heavy, agonizing silence. But halfway down the winding road, the tense atmosphere shattered.
Julian suddenly leaned his broad torso over the center console, invading her space so thoroughly she could feel the heat radiating from his body. His face was mere inches from hers, his voice dropping to a seductive, dangerous whisper right against her ear.
"Your body feels so incredibly good when I touch it."
The filthy, inappropriate comment sent a shockwave of alarm straight through her spine. His utter lack of civility toward his cousin's wife was not just disgusting; it was deeply threatening. He was intentionally pushing her, testing the very limits of her endurance.
Celia’s jaw clenched tight. She reached up and gripped the rough fabric of her seatbelt tightly, her knuckles turning bone-white under the strain. Instead of shrinking away or shouting, she turned her head slightly away from him. She stared rigidly ahead through the windshield, her eyes completely unblinking. She absolutely refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing her irritated, embarrassed, or afraid. She transformed herself into an unfeeling statue of stone.
From the corner of his eye, Julian watched her. He noted the rigid set of her jaw, the defensive white-knuckled grip on her seatbelt, and the absolute, unwavering stoicism in her profile. He had expected her to panic, to cry, or to lash out wildly like she had the night before. Instead, she had retreated behind a fortified wall of fierce, guarded decency.
Despite her horribly thick glasses and 'ugly' appearance, there was an unshakeable core of morality and strength inside her. Julian found himself unexpectedly, deeply intrigued by his new wife. Her rigid reactions revealed a profound, hidden depth beneath her pathetic exterior. The bumbling idiot described in the background check would have crumbled by now, yet Celia Ashford sat beside him, fiercely defending her boundaries with silent, unyielding defiance.
A dangerous thrill sparked in his chest. He realized that stripping away her disguise was going to be far more entertaining than he had initially thought. He decided right then to maintain the ruse of being 'Nolan'. He needed to learn exactly who this woman really was, and more importantly, what she was hiding from the world.
With a dark, imperceptible smirk playing on his lips, he gripped the steering wheel tighter. *Let the game begin.*
