The Substitute Bride

Sitting numbly before the massive vanity mirror, Celia Ashford felt her mind go entirely blank. The reflection staring back at her felt like a stranger, a pale ghost trapped in a devastating reality. Today was supposed to be her wedding day, a day most women dreamed of since childhood. But there was no joy in her lifeless eyes, no flush of excitement on her cheeks. Everything felt incredibly purposeless and barren. She was not the chosen bride. She was merely a substitute, a disposable pawn thrown into a terrifying arrangement by the very people who were supposed to protect her.

The oppressive, heavy silence of the bedroom was abruptly shattered. The door burst open with a violent crack, rebounding against the wall.

Her mother, Helena, hurried into the room. Instead of offering any semblance of maternal comfort, Helena’s eyes immediately darted up and down Celia’s frame. Seeing Celia’s unstyled, messy hair and the drab, long gray jacket that perfectly matched the desolate ash of her complexion, Helena instantly turned frantic and furious.

"The Sterlings are here!" Helena snapped, her voice shrill and entirely unsympathetic to her daughter's plight. "Why have you not changed your clothes yet?"

Looking profoundly dejected, Celia slowly raised her hand and pushed up the thick, black-rimmed glasses resting on the bridge of her nose. She turned her head, fixing her mother with a hollow, piercing stare. She directly questioned her mother's cruelty, her voice barely more than a dry whisper. "Mom, do you really want to do this? Do you really want me to marry my sister’s fiancée?"

A manipulative display unfolded instantly. Panic rapidly drained the color from Helena's perfectly powdered face, leaving her looking utterly terrified. The Sterlings were waiting downstairs. If the immensely powerful family discovered that the brides had been swapped at the very last minute, the resulting fury would completely destroy the Ashford family.

Her legs giving out beneath her, Helena fell to her knees right there on the hardwood floor. She grabbed the fabric of Celia’s jacket, shedding immediate crocodile tears that streamed down her cheeks.

"Celia, I know you don’t want this arrangement. But I beg you," Helena pleaded, her voice trembling with manufactured desperation. "Your sister deserves better. We can’t let Portia marry that man and ruin her entire life. You are her sister. Why won't you just do this and help her?"

A cold, heart-wrenching realization washed over Celia, chilling the blood in her veins. She stared down at the weeping woman kneeling before her, struggling to comprehend that this was her own biological mother. Helena favored her stepchildren—the offspring of her husband's deceased ex-wife—so deeply that she was willing to sacrifice her own flesh and blood without a second thought. They couldn't let Portia’s life be ruined, so they were eagerly tossing Celia directly into the fire.

The man in question was Julian Sterling, the sole heir to the wealthiest, most influential family in Veridia City. Over ten years ago, he had been the victim of a horrific kidnapping. The rumors that circulated about him now were nothing short of terrifying. He was said to be brutally disfigured, utterly impotent, and lethal to any woman unfortunate enough to cross his path. It was widely whispered that no woman sent into his oppressive estate ever came out alive.

Yet, her mother knew all of this, and she was still begging Celia to take the fall.

Outside the door, a servant’s anxious voice broke through the tension. "Madame, the Sterlings' men are coming upstairs."

Helena’s grip tightened, her face twisting in pure anxiety. "Celia, please..."

"Okay. Stop." Celia did not reach out to help her mother off the floor. Realizing she was entirely unloved and utterly alone in this world, her voice dropped to an indifferent, icy flatline. "Get up. I’ll go."

Her heart was completely shattered by this ultimate betrayal. There was no greater sorrow than the heartbreak caused by your own family abandoning you to a monster. She turned away from her mother, walking out the door and heading downstairs entirely alone.

There was no beautiful wedding ceremony. There was no eager groom waiting at the end of an aisle. There was not a single soul in the lavish manor who came out to see her off or wish her well.

Celia ignored the cold, solemn bodyguards waiting in the foyer. They looked at her with indifferent, stone-cold expressions, treating her less like a bride and more like a prisoner being transferred. Without a word, she stepped out into the crisp air and climbed directly into the back of the waiting black Mercedes Benz, resigning herself entirely to her dark fate.

The drive was silent and suffocating. Upon arriving at Julian’s sprawling, oppressive villa, the atmosphere grew even heavier. The bodyguards escorted her through the massive halls, depositing her into a dark, empty bedroom before immediately shutting the door and leaving her alone.

Celia looked around the pitch-black space. He was not here.

With a heavy sigh, she walked over and sat on the very edge of the large bed. She pulled her knees together, waiting in the heavy, suffocating silence. The shadows in the room seemed to stretch and contort, feeding into the horrific rumors of the beast she was now bound to.

It wasn’t until night completely enveloped the sky outside the window, plunging the estate into total darkness, that the bedroom door finally clicked open.

Celia stiffened. She turned her head, vaguely making out a tall, strongly built figure walking in from the hallway. The man closed the door behind him with a solid thud and abruptly flicked on the wall switch.

Squinting against the sudden, blinding glare of the overhead lights, Celia raised her hand to shield her eyes. When her vision finally adjusted, she looked up and completely froze in absolute shock.

She had braced herself for a terrifying, disfigured monster. She had expected scars, brutality, and ugliness. But the man standing before her was breathtakingly handsome. It was the kind of striking, raw beauty that commanded all the oxygen in the room.

He was dressed in a sharp, dark suit that clung flawlessly to his muscular frame, highlighting his broad shoulders and long, powerful legs. His deep, perfectly sculpted facial contours resembled an exquisite work of art, carved with ruthless perfection.

The man stopped a few feet away. He stared down at her for a few agonizing seconds, his dark, ink-colored pupils scanning her messy hair, her oversized glasses, and her baggy clothes. His brow twitched slightly.

"Very ugly," he bluntly stated. His deep voice was completely devoid of emotion, a flat observation that offered no room for argument.

Ignoring the blatant insult, Celia instantly pulled her defenses up. She gripped the edge of the mattress, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs, and demanded, "Who are you?"

Why was a stranger walking into her bedroom on her wedding night?

The man's dark eyes suddenly radiated a harsh, predatory intensity as he took a slow step closer. His powerful aura was overwhelming, practically stifling the air around her and pressing down heavily on her chest.

"You don't know who you married?" he questioned, his voice vibrating with a dangerous, low timber.

Shivering from the brisk, chilling energy he brought with him, Celia refused to back down. She kept her spine rigidly straight, lifting her chin to meet his intimidating gaze. She confidently declared, "Of course I know. The person I am marrying is Julian Sterling."

Hearing her resolute answer, the sheer sharpness in his gaze slowly softened, replaced by a trace of clear amusement. He realized she truly believed the horrific rumors—she actually thought she was waiting for a disfigured, impotent beast.

A calm, collected, and deeply mocking smile touched his lips, transforming his flawless features into something incredibly cynical. He tucked one hand casually into his pocket, looking down at her with a glint of pure arrogance.

"So, you are my sister-in-law?" he said smoothly, introducing himself without breaking eye contact. "I am Nolan, Julian's cousin. I guess on a wedding night, nobody wants to be with such a waste of a man, not even you."
