The Shadow's Curiosity
Valerius's POV
A thick, meticulously compiled file on Cerys Adler lay open right across the center of my heavy mahogany desk. The faint, dusty scent of old parchment drifted upward, mixing intimately with the sharp, dominant tang of my own wolf musk that perpetually clung to the room. I leaned back in my high-backed leather chair, letting it groan softly under my weight, and slowly began flipping through the highly confidential documents. I was carefully piecing together the fractured, bizarre life of this strange, captivating she-wolf.
According to my intelligence network, her life story was violently split into three distinct phases. Before the age of six, she was the adored, flawless princess of the Moonglen Pack. The reports painted a bright picture of a cub constantly bathed in sunlight and pack affection, shielded by the absolute protection of her Alpha parents. But the entire trajectory of her existence shattered into a million irreparable pieces the exact day Vespera Kent arrived.
The file detailed the horrific turning point with clinical precision. Vespera’s biological mother, Olenna, had tragically died in a brutal carriage accident while frantically searching through a storm for a young, runaway Cerys. Drowning in a heavy, suffocating ocean of misplaced guilt, the Moonglen Pack adopted the orphaned Vespera. They showered the grieving cub with endless, obsessive affection, using her as a twisted form of redemption for their own perceived sins. Over the years, the dynamic warped so severely that even Cerys’s own blood brothers grew to dote on their delicate, fragile cousin far more than their own flesh-and-blood sister.
In direct response to this massive emotional displacement, Cerys’s inner light dimmed. The lively cub died away. She morphed into a quiet, obedient shadow, constantly yielding her space and disappearing behind closed doors so Vespera could shine.
However, the documents highlighted a sudden, violent shift when she turned seventeen. Something deep inside Cerys finally snapped. The quiet obedience vanished. She began rebelling aggressively, clashing openly with Vespera's carefully curated saintly facade. She clawed desperately at the iron bars of her gilded cage, fighting tooth and nail against the suffocating expectations placed upon her. Eventually, she packed her bags, walked away from the lavish Moonglen estate, and cut all ties entirely, choosing the harshness of the outside world over their toxic hypocrisy.
Standing rigidly across the expansive desk, Bennett—my ever-dutiful and highly observant Beta—delivered his verbal assessment in a measured, cautious tone.
"The Moonglen sisters possess quite the contrasting reputation among the regional packs, Alpha," Bennett noted, his eyes scanning the secondary reports. "Vespera Kent is universally hailed as gentle and brilliant, the absolute, unquestioned pride of the pack. Cerys Adler, on the other hand... she is widely whispered to be impulsive, reckless, and notoriously difficult to manage."
"Foolish," I muttered under my breath, the absolute faintest trace of a predatory smirk tugging at the corner of my lips.
I wasn't referring to Cerys. I was referring to the blind, pathetic idiots of the Moonglen Pack. They couldn't recognize a true predator if it ripped their throats out.
As the sole, uncontested heir to the continent's most terrifying force—the Shadowscourge Pack—I know exactly the kind of power I wield. I know that my mere voice can shake mountains and instantly shift the loyalties of entire territories. A single command from me can wipe a lesser pack completely off the map. Yet, here I sat in the dim, quiet solitude of my expansive study, entirely fixated on a disgraced outcast from a minor, insignificant pack.
I reached up, my large, calloused fingers slowly rubbing the faint, bruised mark still burning hot along my temple.
It was the exact, tender spot where that little hellcat had violently slammed me with her head just last night.
I closed my eyes, a low, rumbling growl vibrating deep in my chest as I vividly recalled the encounter in the alleyway. She had fought me like a cornered wild thing. There was no hesitation, no cowering submission to an Alpha aura that usually brought grown men to their knees. It was all bared fangs and pure, unadulterated fury. I could still perfectly picture her striking golden eyes blazing in the shadows with an untamed, feral defiance.
This feral, blood-soaked version of her, with literal fire pumping through her veins and raw rebellion laced heavily in her scent, was infinitely more captivating to me than the obedient, broken puppet the Moonglen Pack had once tried to raise. She was a survivor who had learned to weaponize her pain.
I lowered my hand back to the mahogany surface. The air in the vast room suddenly chilled, growing heavy and thick as my presence naturally expanded, pressing against the walls and suffocating the space.
"Tell me," I said softly, my deep voice effortlessly slicing through the heavy silence of the study. "If I were to place her inside our pack, would she raise hell?"
Bennett physically froze at the question. The subtle rustle of his clothing stopped completely.
The Beta knew me well enough to realize his Alpha never acted out of idle, fleeting curiosity. Every single word that left my mouth was a highly calculated move. I could already picture the glorious, violent chaos of it all: taking this stubborn, battered little she-wolf and throwing her directly into the ruthless, unforgiving heart of my territory. I wanted to surround her with towering, bloodthirsty beasts who respected nothing but sheer power, constantly testing her mettle to see what she was truly made of.
Would she finally yield and break under the immense pressure? Or would she bare those little fangs, bite back, and draw blood, just as she had so fearlessly done to me in the alleyway last night?
For the first time in what felt like an absolute eternity of numb, predictable violence and boring pack politics, someone had managed to genuinely stir the ancient, sleeping blood within my veins.
She was just the discarded daughter of Moonglen. A solitary wolf who had lost absolutely everything, yet somehow still harbored enough raw, burning spirit to bare her fangs at the absolute dark.
Perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
