A Velvet Threat

Valerius's POV

I paced the shadowed, labyrinthine streets of the city, accompanied only by the heavy, padded footsteps of my massive Lycan hound. I needed to walk. I was moving strictly to cool the restless, boiling fury in my blood left over from my father's incessant demands back at the sprawling Shadowscourge estate. The old man never knew when to quit, constantly pushing his power plays and attempting to bend me to his will. The night air was biting and thick with mist, a perfect mirror to the violent tension coiling beneath my skin.

As I navigated deeper into the desolate alleyways, my sharp senses suddenly caught a pungent scent drifting on the cold wind. It was a harsh, metallic mixture of fresh blood and desperate, blinding fear.

I followed the scent down to the misty riverbank, the damp fog clinging to my dark coat. Under the flickering glow of a broken street lamp, I observed a scene that immediately snagged my attention. A delicate, heartbreakingly beautiful girl was backed into a corner by a filthy pack of half-breed rogues. They were hulking, unwashed brutes driven by mindless aggression.

Yet, the moment I caught a proper breath of the air, her scent completely contradicted her fragile appearance. She did not carry the sweet, submissive scent of an Omega. Instead, her aura was threaded heavily with the undeniable, sharp dominance of an Alpha heir. It was a rich, intoxicating smell that hit my senses like a physical blow.

And she proved it with her fists. As she fought, her movements were brutally precise and entirely desperate. She dodged a heavy swing, countering with a bone-cracking punch to a rogue’s jaw. She fought like a cornered flame, wild and untamed, snapping something feral and ancient awake deep inside my chest.

I raised a single hand, silently commanding my Lycan hound to stay back in the shadows. For a moment, I just stood there and watched her incredible resilience. She was tearing them apart, but there were too many, and exhaustion was clearly dragging at her limbs. It wasn't until a surviving rogue, dragging his broken body across the concrete, lunged directly at her back with a rusty, jagged blade that I finally moved.

Acting entirely on raw instinct, I stepped out of the heavy mist. I brought my boot down hard, crushing the rogue's ribs with a single, devastating kick that echoed with a sickening snap. The man’s body went flying into the dirt, entirely lifeless. I firmly planted myself between the bleeding girl and the terrified half-breeds. Without uttering a single word, I let my own dominant, suffocating scent roll through the narrow street. It was a dark, aggressive wave of pure power that instantly froze the remaining rogues in sheer terror.

I looked down at the girl. She remained on the cold ground, her chest heaving heavily. She was bleeding from minor cuts on her cheek and knuckles, yet she was glaring up at me with unyielding defiance.

"Interesting," I murmured in dark amusement. I deliberately dragged my gaze over her dirt-stained, torn form, making no effort to hide my intrigue. I noted my genuine surprise at finding such a vicious little wolf lurking in these rundown streets. She wasn't trembling, and she certainly wasn't looking away. "Tell me," I demanded, my voice dropping to a low, velvet rumble. "Who taught you to fight with such ferocity?"

She merely stared back at me in stubborn, tight-lipped silence, her gray eyes sharp enough to cut through solid bone.

Noticing the groaning, writhing rogues behind us, I let out a heavy sigh. "You left a few breathing," I coldly criticized her sloppy work, shaking my head. "If you are going to fight, you must finish it."

With swift, lethal efficiency, I turned my back to her. I didn't hesitate. I grabbed the closest rogue by the throat and snapped his neck with a brutal twist. The second one tried to crawl away, but I drove my heel into the back of his skull. Within seconds, I permanently eliminated the threat, ending their breathing and silencing their pathetic whimpers.

When I turned back around, the girl was glaring at me with blazing eyes, as if my violent intervention had deeply insulted her pride.

I extended my large hand to help her up from the filthy pavement. "Quick hands," I teased her, my lips curving into a smirk, "but a soft heart. Fire without fangs." I tilted my head, studying her beautiful, furious face. "Tell me, little wolf, how do you plan to repay your savior?"

The absolute second my calloused fingers brushed against the delicate skin of her wrist, she reacted with reckless, explosive force. She forcefully shoved both of her hands hard against my solid chest.

Caught completely off guard by her sheer audacity—no one ever dared lay a hand on me—my balance broke. I fell forward, and in a pure, automatic reflex to catch myself, my hands shot out. My large hand landed firmly against her breast. It was warm, rounded, and unforgivingly soft through the torn fabric of her dress.

Time completely froze. Both of us halted in dead silence. The electric, combative tension between us was thick enough to cut. I felt the rapid thumping of her heart beneath my palm.

Then, her gray eyes flared with hot fury. "Didn't anyone ever tell you," she hissed at me, her voice trembling with absolute rage, "not to stare at roadside trouble?"

Without missing a single beat, she drove her knee incredibly hard straight into my groin.

A sharp curse tore from my throat as I dropped to the cold concrete, pain radiating through me. Instantly, she threw her head back and screamed into the night air. "Help! Enforcers! Please, someone help!"

As the distant wail of patrol sirens began to pierce the night, rapidly approaching our location, I remained on the ground. I was caught entirely between absolute disbelief and profound amusement.

"You repay kindness with pure chaos," I drawled from the dirt, fighting through the ache to look up at her. "That's bold."

The girl stood up tall. She casually wiped a streak of blood from her cheek, her lips twisting into a wicked, undeniably stunning smirk. "I'm bold," she proudly declared, her tone dripping with sweet venom. "And very, very bad."

Without a backward glance, she marched away into the thick darkness, her defiance burning like a beacon until the night swallowed her whole.

Minutes later, the screech of tires and heavy boots announced the arrival of the local patrol. My Beta, Bennett, rushed onto the scene right behind them. He nervously eyed the dead, broken rogues scattered across the alley, his nose twitching as he caught the fading, distinct scent of the girl in the air.

He swallowed hard, looking wildly around the blood-soaked pavement. "Alpha... should we clean up this mess?" he asked hesitantly.

I didn't answer him right away. I slowly stood to my feet, brushing the dirt from my dark coat. My gaze remained entirely fixed on the empty street where her stubborn spark had just stood. The lingering warmth of her breast still burned against my palm, and my blood raced with the thrill of her violent retaliation.

With a dangerously calm, resolute tone, I issued a single order: "Find her."

Bennett paled dramatically. "Who?" he asked, glancing nervously down the street.

I simply shot him a sideways glare.

"Right. On it," Bennett muttered under his breath, quickly turning away. He shook his head, whispering quietly about the impending doom of the poor woman who had just crossed me.

But Bennett was entirely wrong.

I felt absolutely no desire to hurt her. My blood was singing with a singular, all-consuming curiosity. I simply must know what kind of wolf hides such razor-sharp claws beneath eyes that look so devastatingly soft.
