The Ruined Vow

Cerys's POV

The heavy, rhythmic thud of the ceremonial drums vibrated through the ancient stone floor, traveling straight up into the soles of my bare feet. Tonight, the Moonshadow Hall was bathed in a shimmering, ethereal glow. Wolves from every noble bloodline knelt in the surrounding shadows, their breaths held in quiet reverence.

I stood right at the center of it all, perched upon the sacred Moon Altar. I was draped in layers of delicate white moon-silk, the fabric brushing lightly against my skin with every passing breeze. The sacred Luna mark on my left wrist pulsed with a faint, warm light. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, fueled by the breathless anticipation of twenty long years.

Twenty years of waiting, of endless training, to finally stand here and be crowned Luna of the Ashwood Pack alongside my chosen mate, Alpha Kaelen.

"Cerys Adler," the High Priest’s voice boomed across the vast, marble sanctuary, pulling me from my racing thoughts. "Step forward. Swear your final vow under the goddess's gaze and claim your rightful place."

I took a slow, steady breath. The silk of my gown rustled softly as I lifted my chin and met Kaelen’s gaze. He stood tall and imposing, his broad shoulders squared. He held the ornate, silver Luna crown securely in his large hands.

I opened my trembling lips to speak the ancient words that would bind our souls together forever.

"I, Cerys Adler—"

Crash!

The massive, heavy oak doors at the back of the hall were violently thrown open. The explosive sound struck the sacred silence like a physical blow.

Ryker Graves, a prominent warrior of the pack, stumbled blindly into the sanctuary. He was violently gasping for breath, his ceremonial clothes torn and disheveled.

"Alpha!" Ryker shouted, his voice cracking with pure panic. "It’s Vespera! She’s been attacked by rogues near the border! She’s severely hurt!"

Those words sucked the oxygen straight out of the room.

The rhythmic, ceremonial chanting of the priests ceased instantly. The glowing moonfire in the surrounding braziers seemed to aggressively dim.

Right at the center of the altar, Kaelen's entire demeanor shifted. The soft, solemn expression he had worn just a second ago completely vanished, replaced by sheer panic. His large hands, which were delicately holding my ceremonial Luna crown, suddenly went totally slack.

The heavy, ornate silver crown slipped right from his grasp.

It hit the hard stone floor with a sickening, loud clatter. It rolled down the altar steps, spinning wildly before finally bumping against my bare toes and coming to a dead stop.

Without a single shred of hesitation, Kaelen stepped down from the sacred platform. The ancient ritual, the presence of the goddess, and the woman who was about to become his Luna were instantly erased from his mind. His focus was entirely consumed by the terrifying thought of Vespera—my fragile, flawless adopted sister—bleeding somewhere in the dark.

Desperation clawed fiercely at my throat, thick and suffocating. I quickly reached out, my trembling fingers lightly grasping his muscular forearm to stop his retreat.

"Kaelen," I asked softly, my voice barely holding together. "Do you really intend to abandon our ritual?"

He paused, clearly agitated, his muscular body already angled heavily toward the grand exit. "Cerys... Vespera is hurt. She needs me right now."

I stared up at him, testing the incredibly fragile thread of his loyalty. "And what if I don't let you go? You know my deep-seated disdain for her. I am supposed to be your priority tonight."

Kaelen's amber eyes hardened into cold, unforgiving stones. He sharply yanked his arm out of my gentle grasp. "Cerys, this is a matter of life and death. Now is not the time for your petty jealousy."

Jealousy.

He weaponized that exact word every single time to completely invalidate my feelings. Whenever Vespera had a nightmare and cried for him to hold her until dawn, I was just being jealous. Whenever she conveniently fainted right into his arms during my most important pack events, I was just being jealous.

"My vow," I whispered, fiercely fighting the pathetic tremor rising in my chest. "It only happens once."

"Stop acting so dramatic," he commanded sharply, his tone dripping with impatience and a heavy dose of condescension. "You’ve anticipated getting this mark your entire life. You can wait another night."

The deafening silence of the grand hall was suddenly replaced by the mocking, hushed whispers of the pack members in the crowd.

She isn't even the Luna yet, and he already abandons her.

He chose the adopted sister over his own fated mate.

How entirely pathetic to be left standing at the altar.

"Enough!" a furious voice violently shattered the whispers.

Fallon, my fiercely loyal best friend, stepped out of the suffocating crowd. Her face was flushed with a blinding, terrifying rage. Her fists were clenched so tight her knuckles were completely white.

She marched aggressively toward the steps of the altar, glaring daggers at the Alpha. "Are you Vespera's mate, Kaelen, or her personal, on-call healer? Every single time she gets a scratch, you drop absolutely everything for her! Don't you find the timing of her constant 'attacks' a little too perfectly suspicious?"

Loud, scandalized gasps echoed through the hall. Nobody in the pack dared speak to the Alpha with such blatant disrespect.

Kaelen's expression darkened into sheer, unadulterated fury. "Fallon, shut your damn mouth before I make you." He immediately turned his harsh glare onto me. "Cerys, control your friend right now, or I will."

Before I could even process his unfair demand, the High Priest stepped forward, his ancient hands trembling wildly in the dim light. "Alpha Kaelen, please listen! If the moon sets before the sacred vow is completed, the bond will be permanently void! You cannot leave this room!"

Kaelen didn't even flinch at the devastating warning. He didn't even look back at me.

With a booming roar that echoed violently off the ancient stone pillars, he declared, "I will not let Vespera die!"

And with that final, crushing blow, he turned his broad back on me and strode out of the hall.

I stood entirely frozen. One by one, the vast sanctuary completely emptied.

The priests lowered their heads and quickly rushed out. The esteemed pack elders silently followed. The sworn warriors, the very wolves who were supposed to pledge their eternal loyalty to me tonight, filed out right behind their Alpha.

They all left me entirely abandoned amidst the tragic, humiliating ruins of my own coronation.

As I stood there alone, watching his retreating figure disappear into the heavy shadows, something shifted deep within my chest. A profound, incredibly clean fracture echoed loudly in my soul. My twenty years of unconditional forgiveness, of silent endurance, and of foolish hope finally evaporated into absolute nothingness.

The heavy oak doors swung shut with a resounding thud, leaving me standing in the quiet emptiness of the vast hall. The sweet scent of crushed moon-roses on the floor was suddenly sour and suffocating.

Buzz.

A sharp noise suddenly broke the dead, heavy silence.

The sacred communication stone, resting right on the edge of the Moon Altar, suddenly flared to life. A short message materialized across its smooth, polished surface, carved in a mocking, shimmering silver light.

You lost.

It was signed: Vespera Kent.

I stared blankly at the glowing letters. My fragile, helpless sister. The sweet girl who was supposedly bleeding out from a brutal rogue attack right at this very second, yet somehow had the strength to send a gloating message to the altar.

I reached up and slowly wiped the gathering moisture from my cold eyes. I looked down at the ornate Luna crown still lying abandoned by my toes, then at the discarded moon-silk petals scattered across the freezing floor.

A freezing, calculating resolve swiftly washed over my broken heart. The suffocating sorrow thoroughly drained out of me, quickly replaced by an unbreakable, icy defiance.

Vespera thought she had finally won. Kaelen arrogantly thought I would just sit here like a loyal dog and wait for him to return tomorrow to finish what he started.

The Luna crown might be lost tonight. My stupid heart might be shattered into a thousand jagged pieces on this sacred altar.

But as I stared intensely into the empty, silent hall, I silently vowed to the Moon Goddess herself that the game between us was far from over.
