Riding to Ryker's Home

POV Sienna

Ryker slowly and carefully pulls the heavy motorcycle out of the airport parking spot, giving my trembling body a precious few seconds to adjust to the terrifying reality of the ride. The raw, guttural engine purrs steadily beneath us, exactly like a large, contented beast waking from a deep slumber. The heavy vibration hums straight through the thick leather seat and seeps directly into my frozen bones. As we navigate the concrete ramp and lean sharply toward the garage exit, gravity forces my body forward. I am left with absolutely no choice but to wrap my arms tightly around Ryker's solid, muscular waist. My small hands fist into the tough leather of his heavy jacket, clinging to him for dear life.

The second my chest presses fully against the broad, hard expanse of his back, a shockwave of recognition ripples through my veins. Deep within my soul, a presence that has been completely, terrifyingly silent for three agonizing years suddenly stirs. My inner wolf. She had retreated so far into the darkest, most unreachable recesses of my mind, hiding from Maddox's brutal fists and relentless beatings, that I honestly thought she was permanently dead. But now, pressed against the familiar, comforting warmth of a man from our past, she breathes. She stretches. She comes completely back to vibrant life.

*He smells like home,* she whispers directly into my mind. Her voice is a deep, resonant rumble of intense, desperate longing that makes my tired eyes burn with unshed tears. *Like thick pine forests and heavy summer storms.*

I firmly and immediately tell her no. I mentally slam an iron door shut on that specific line of thought. The intoxicating, rushing speed of the bike hitting the open air of the highway is a stark, shocking contrast to the suffocating, dead silence of the luxury penthouse I’ve finally managed to escape. Out here, the wind is loud and chaotic, ripping past my helmet as the city lights blur into long, neon streaks. I can feel every single turn as we lean deeply into the curves of the road, the sensation both liberating and terrifying. But despite the sudden, open freedom, being this physically close to him feels incredibly dangerous.

It isn't because Ryker himself is a threat. I know deep down he isn't. It is because my own mind and my own instincts are entirely broken. I have forgotten how to be touched by a man without immediately bracing for a crushing blow. I had once completely trusted a man with my entire existence. I trusted Maddox with my body, my soul, and my wolf. I foolishly, stupidly believed that his sheer, dominating alpha strength meant guaranteed safety for me. I thought a powerful mate would be my ultimate shield against the cruel world.

Instead, he violently used that immense trust to systematically and nearly successfully destroy us both. He turned his terrifying strength against me, using it to lock me away, to silence me, and ultimately, violently robbing me of the chance to ever even hold my unborn pup. My chest caves in at the phantom ache of that profound, horrific loss. My grip on Ryker’s jacket tightens to the point that my knuckles turn stark white under my gloves, my fingernails digging fiercely into the thick leather.

Suddenly, the heavy motorcycle hits a sharp, jagged pothole in the road. The bike jerks hard.

The violent jolt sends a spike of pure, paralyzing panic seizing straight through my chest. The loud, rushing wind, the dizzying blur of highway lights, the comforting scent of pine and heavy leather—it all completely vanishes in a split second. My surroundings are completely obliterated. I am suddenly no longer riding on the back of a motorcycle speeding through the night.

I am thrown forcefully back into that dark, suffocating bedroom. I am completely trapped. My back slams violently against the cold hardwood floor, the impact driving the air straight out of my lungs. I can feel Maddox’s crushing, heavy hands clamping brutally down on my throat. I can feel the sheer, terrifying weight of him pinning me down, completely paralyzing me. The metallic tang of my own blood floods the back of my mouth. I can't breathe. I can't move. I am suffocating. My hands claw frantically at the empty air around my neck, trying desperately to pry his massive, unrelenting fingers off my crushed windpipe. I am going to die here, alone in the dark.

*Breathe!* my wolf commands sharply. Her voice cracks like a whip, effectively cutting straight through the spiraling, suffocating darkness. *You're not there. You're with Ryker. You're safe.*

I suck in a massive, ragged gasp of air inside the cramped space of the helmet. My entire body is rigid, shaking so violently that the terrifying tremors are vibrating right through the heavy motorcycle frame.

Instantly sensing my rigid tension and absolute terror, Ryker quickly rolls off the throttle. He smoothly slows the speeding bike down, guiding it into a smoother, steady lane away from the fast-moving traffic. Without looking back, he reaches his left arm behind him. He finds my small, trembling hand where I am gripping his jacket in a desperate death hold. He gently rests his large, warm hand completely over mine.

He doesn't pry my fingers loose. He doesn't forcefully intertwine our hands. He simply covers my fist with his broad palm. The simple physical gesture doesn't hurt, and it doesn't demand anything from me—it simply comforts me. The sheer, quiet weight of his hand grounds me back in reality. It is a quiet, powerful reminder of the true, protective strength I used to inherently trust, back before I was young, incredibly foolish, and heartbroken enough to push him and my own brother Kaelen completely away five years ago. I had let my chaotic emotions and stupid pride isolate me from the only men who genuinely cared about me.

The rest of the ride passes in a blur of calming, deep breaths and steady, rumbling engine noise. We eventually pull off the main arterial roads and turn onto a quiet, tree-lined suburban street. Ryker guides the heavy bike up a paved driveway that I absolutely do not recognize.

He kills the engine. The sudden, ringing silence of the neighborhood rushes in to fill the void, heavily contrasted by the metallic ticking of the cooling exhaust pipes. The medium-sized, pleasant house sits peacefully at the end of the driveway. It glows invitingly with a warm, deeply settled yellow light shining from the front porch. It looks incredibly domestic. It looks firmly grounded.

*Where someone has built a life completely without us,* my wolf observes quietly. Her tone is laced with heavy, undeniable sadness that makes my throat tighten all over again.

I clumsily unlatch the stiff chin strap and pull the heavy black helmet off my head. The cool night air hits my sweat-dampened face, making me shiver uncontrollably. My hair is a static-filled mess, sticking up at odd angles. "Where are we?" I ask nervously, my voice trembling and raspy from my silent panic attack.

"My place," he says. He steps smoothly off the heavy bike with fluid, athletic grace, taking the helmet from my shaking hands. He hangs it effortlessly on the handlebar. "I figured you might not want to go to Kaelen's house right away. Since he's not actually there."

He is entirely right. I cannot handle the thought of sitting completely alone in my brother's empty house, surrounded by the haunting ghosts of a family dynamic I deliberately shattered. But standing here, I feel completely out of place. I hesitate near the edge of the driveway, wrapping my arms defensively around my own chest. I feel completely surrounded by the undeniable evidence of a domestic life he’s successfully built entirely without me.

Immediately reading my deep unease and misinterpreting the source of my rigid posture, Ryker quickly and softly offers an alternative. "I can take you somewhere else if you want, Sienna. A hotel, or..."

"No." The word slips out of my mouth sharper and more desperate than I intended. I cannot be alone in a sterile hotel room tonight. The suffocating silence would swallow me whole. "No, this is... this is fine."

I force my leaden legs to move. As I slowly approach the front of the house, my eyes immediately catch the striking details of the exterior architecture. Carefully arranged, beautiful flower boxes sit directly under the front windows, bursting with soft, colorful blooms. The front porch features perfectly coordinated, comfortable outdoor furniture complete with decorative throw pillows.

The entire aesthetic feels utterly foreign to the rugged, heavily utilitarian Ryker I once knew. The old Ryker barely owned a matching set of plates, let alone cared about carefully curated seasonal flowers. It distinctly and undeniably looks like a space carefully chosen and completely curated by a woman's hand. It hits me like a physical blow to the stomach. It is a heavy, crushing reminder that over the last five long years, while I was locked in a bloody, violent nightmare of my own making, everyone I loved has found their solid ground. They have completely moved on without me. I am a broken outsider intruding on a peaceful, beautiful life.

Ryker unlocks the heavy oak front door and pushes it open, stepping aside to let me enter first. I cautiously step into his warm, well-lit living room, my boots feeling far too heavy on his spotless hardwood floors. The air inside smells lightly of vanilla and clean linen. My gaze anxiously sweeps over the space, taking in the soft, inviting rugs, the carefully chosen, elegant decor, and the various framed pictures displayed neatly around the room on floating shelves and side tables.

I walk further into the room, my anxious eyes tracking across the carefully arranged space until they land on the massive stone mantle above the fireplace. My battered heart comes to a complete, dead stop.

I instantly notice a particular, prominently placed photo resting right in the center of the mantle, illuminated perfectly by a small overhead light. I step closer, completely unable to look away, my breath instantly deserting my lungs. The silver frame shows Ryker, standing very close beside a beautiful, vibrant woman. His strong arm is wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his side in a stance that screams fierce protection and deep affection. They are looking directly into the camera, their smiles genuine and bright, both of them looking completely, undeniably happy and deeply in love.
