Rejecting the Alpha Mate

"Until death do you part?" The elderly officiant's echoing words hang heavily in the sudden, suffocating silence of the grand hall. Three hundred silently expecting faces stare at me. Maddox's fingers tighten around mine, a silent, painful warning masked perfectly as a lover's caress. His dark eyes promise absolute hell if I don't give him exactly what he wants.

This is it. The exact moment of truth. The point of no return.

Standing completely frozen before Maddox and the massive crowd, something ancient and deeply buried inside my chest violently shifts. I finally find the deep, buried strength I genuinely thought I had lost forever. I look at this man. I look at the crowd of pack members who fully believe they are witnessing something sacred. They don't see the ugly, yellowing bruises carefully hidden under my expensive foundation.

I force my mind to focus on the vibrant, independent woman I used to be five long years ago, before I was violently trained to make myself small. I think of the tiny, defenseless baby I couldn't protect from his brutal, flying fists. I look at the long aisle behind me and the agonizing, inescapable prison sentence this marriage will instantly become.

Gathering up three continuous years of violently suppressed fury and agonizing physical pain, the terror inside me finally morphs into pure, white-hot adrenaline. I am so much stronger than the paralyzing fear he has used to control me.

I open my mouth, and the words come out incredibly clear and loud enough for every single wolf in the massive room to hear.

"I reject you."

The absolute silence that crashes down on the massive hall is deafening. Three hundred wolves sit perfectly frozen in their chairs, staring at me with their mouths hanging completely open. The elderly officiant blinks rapidly in deep confusion, as if his hearing aids just drastically malfunctioned.

Maddox's perfectly composed, charming Alpha facade shatters in an instant. His handsome face violently cycles through pure shock, wild confusion, deep embarrassment, and finally, feral, uncontrollable rage.

"What the hell did you just say?" he demands.

"I reject you, Maddox Carver," I state, my voice laced with steel. "I reject you as my mate. I reject you as my husband. I reject you as my Alpha. I reject this entire ceremony, this fake marriage, and this miserable life you've built for us on lies and constant fear."

Instantly, the heavy silver necklace resting perfectly at my throat begins to burn. It flares with searing, blistering heat as the magical, sacred mate bond forcefully rips itself apart, severing our connection permanently. Maddox violently staggers backward. He aggressively clutches his chest, his face contorting as he feels the absolute, tearing severance of our souls.

A massive wave of shock violently ripples through the grand hall. The reaction is immediate and totally explosive. Chairs scrape harshly against the marble floor as people jump wildly to their feet. Loud gasps and screaming murmurs erupt into a chaotic, deafening roar.

Maddox recovers his balance, his eyes turning pitch black with fury. He steps aggressively toward me, looking exactly like a ravenous, furious beast.

"You can't do this," he snarls, his voice a low, terrifying rumble meant only for me. "You can't humiliate me like this. Not in front of everyone."

"I just did." The absolute boldness in my own tone genuinely surprises me. I have finally had enough of his constant, sickening abuse.

His large hand twitches violently. He raises it instinctively, the terrifying, familiar movement of a brutal backhand that has successfully silenced me into bloody submission in the dark so many times before.

But this time, I am fully ready. I absolutely do not flinch. I stand my ground, keeping my chin raised proudly high.

"Go ahead," I challenge him quietly, my voice carrying clearly through the shocked silence of the room. "Hit me. Do it right here in front of all these people. Show them exactly who you really are."

He freezes entirely. His large hand hovers rigidly halfway to my face. The heavy weight of hundreds of staring, deeply shocked eyes crashes down on him, stopping him completely in his tracks. His carefully constructed, flawless public image is visibly cracking and shattering in real time.

Seizing the suspended moment, I reach up to my throat. I grab the blisteringly hot silver necklace—his ultimate, sickening mark of ownership. With one violent, definitive yank, I snap the thick chain, feeling my sensitive skin underneath burn and blister where the hot metal touches me.

I drop the necklace directly onto the polished floor at his expensive shoes.

"I'm done," I declare.

I turn my back on the Alpha of the London pack. I walk completely steadily down the long, flower-lined aisle. I leave Maddox standing frozen at the altar, leaving the suddenly erupting, chaotic noise of the shocked pack entirely behind me.

The second I am safely inside the secluded bridal suite, the adrenaline spikes in my veins. I frantically claw at the heavy white wedding dress. I shed the ridiculously expensive silk and lace like a layer of dead skin, letting it pool in a discarded, messy heap on the floor. I quickly dig into my hidden duffel bag and pull on real, comfortable clothes—faded denim jeans and an oversized black sweater. They feel like a necessary suit of armor after months of being forced into whatever revealing, submissive outfits he aggressively picked out for me.

I grab my absolute essentials, my hands finally beginning to shake uncontrollably. My phone is in my hand before I even fully realize I am reaching for it. I desperately scroll through my contacts and dial a phone number I haven't dared to call in four long, agonizing years.

The line rings loudly in my ear.

Hearing my older brother Kaelen's deeply shocked, familiar voice on the other end almost completely breaks my fragile resolve.

"Sienna?" he asks, absolute confusion radiating strongly through the speaker. "Goddess, is that really you? I haven't heard from you in..."

"I need you to come get me," I rush out in a panicked, desperate breath, cutting him off before I totally lose my nerve. "I'm heading to Heathrow Airport right now. I'll text you the exact flight information."

"Heathrow? What the hell are you doing in London? I thought you were still living in America. Sienna, you haven't returned any of my calls in years, and now you're at an airport?"

"I know. I know, and I am so deeply sorry. I will explain absolutely everything when I see you. I just... I need to come home. Please, Kaelen."

A heavy pause stretches over the line.

"Of course," Kaelen finally says, his tone shifting into deep, undeniable concern. "Of course you can come home. But... I'm actually scheduled to leave for a big family trip to Scotland with Brenna and the kids tomorrow morning. We're visiting her parents for the entire week. I won't get back until next week, but I can easily call someone to..."

"No!" The word rips out of my throat much sharper than I intended. "I don't want anyone else to know I'm coming back. Not yet. Please, absolutely no one else."

"Sienna, what the hell is wrong? You are severely alarming me. What happened?"

I close my eyes, aggressively pressing the heels of my hands against my throbbing temples. How could I possibly compress three years of pure, absolute hell into a quick phone call? How do I tell my fiercely protective older brother that his little sister has been systematically broken, beaten, and slowly dying while he was completely in the dark?

"Nothing," I whisper brokenly into the receiver. "I'm fine. I just can't stay here anymore. I can't."

"Did someone hurt you?"

The horrifying, completely accurate question hangs heavily in the tense air between us. It is loaded with all the dark, bloody secrets I've kept to protect him.

"I just need to get out of this horrible country," I reply instead, completely dodging the brutal truth. "Please."

"Okay. Give me a few minutes. Let me make some important calls and figure this out."

I quickly gather my single bag, sneak out of the venue through the rear exits, and throw myself into the back of a waiting cab heading straight for the airport. Twenty minutes later, my phone buzzes violently.

"I called a friend," Kaelen says the second I answer. "He's the only one who can actually get to you in time. Just call me when you land."

"Don't worry, I can easily wait," I argue quickly. "I can just get a cheap hotel near the airport and wait until you get back from Scotland."

"Sienna, you sound like you are about to completely fall apart," he states firmly, slipping instantly into his authoritative brother role. "I am absolutely not leaving you stranded alone in a highly fragile state in an airport for days. You know what, I'll just postpone my family trip. I will fly out to America, pick you up myself, get you completely settled, and then join Brenna later."

I desperately want to argue, but my entire battered body is completely drained. I am far too deeply exhausted and broken to fight him anymore.

"Okay," I whisper, leaning my heavy head against the cold glass of the cab window. If he genuinely wants to help, who am I to refuse? I really need him so incredibly badly right now.

The grueling seven-hour flight to JFK airport in New York is without a single doubt the longest, most agonizing journey of my entire life.

I spend almost the entire agonizing time staring blankly out the small, scratched airplane window. I watch the grey clouds completely swallow up the city of London, actively leaving behind an entire broken version of myself. The naive, deeply hopeful girl who boarded a plane and landed in the UK five years ago is completely dead. That girl had been heartbroken but deeply optimistic, fully believing in the inherent goodness of mates and love.

The quiet, damaged woman staring back at me in the faint reflection of the plane window is a total stranger. I am completely hollowed out. I am deeply hardened, permanently marked, and scarred on a molecular level by three continuous years of absolute hell.

But as the massive plane finally begins its rough descent over the sprawling, glowing grid of New York City, a strange, beautiful, unfamiliar sensation finally blooms in the center of my severely battered chest.

I am free.

For the very first time in what genuinely feels like a lifetime, I am truly, completely free. No one is waiting to ruthlessly monitor my every single move. No one is going to violently drag me by the hair across the floor for looking at someone the wrong way. The phantom weight of Maddox's heavy fists and cruel, demeaning words is thousands of miles away across a massive, deep ocean.

Navigating the incredibly chaotic, loud maze of the JFK airport terminal feels exactly like moving underwater. I walk on pure autopilot, completely numb to the massive crowds, dragging my single, pathetically small suitcase behind me. It is a harsh, brutal reality check that three entire years of my adult life have been successfully reduced to one tiny bag of essential clothes. Everything else—the massive penthouse apartment, the expensive jewelry, the beautiful furniture, and that suffocating white wedding dress—was completely tainted by his violent presence. I left all of it behind to rot.

I pull out my phone as the sliding glass doors to the arrivals terminal finally part, blasting me with the chaotic noise of waiting families and annoying taxi drivers.

I quickly text Kaelen: *Just walked out of baggage claim. I'm here.*

My screen lights up almost instantly with his swift reply: *I'm already here waiting for you. Give me a few minutes, look toward the main exit doors.*

A tiny sigh of pure, exhausted relief escapes my dry lips. I tiredly scan the incredibly busy arrivals area, pushing past businessmen and excited tourists. I look for Kaelen's deeply familiar face, desperately craving the safe, protective, warm hug of my big brother to finally anchor me.

My eyes sweep quickly across a long row of waiting people.

Then, my gaze snags.

I suddenly stop absolutely dead in my tracks. My single, small suitcase bumps hard against the back of my calves, but I don't even flinch.

My heart violently drops entirely into my stomach. My breath catches sharply in my throat, cutting off my oxygen supply completely. My eyes land directly on the absolute last person I ever expected to see standing in this airport waiting for me.

My mind and my entire battered body instantly freeze completely solid for what feels like an absolute eternity.
