A Dangerous Transaction

The handsome stranger behind the wheel slowly raised a dark eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over her soaked, pathetic form. The heavy silence in the confined space of the car hung thick with his unspoken assumption. She could see it in the slight, calculating tilt of his head and the dismissive look in his eyes—he clearly assumed she was a down-on-her-luck sex worker soliciting him for money right off the rainy asphalt.

Freya did not utter a single word to correct him. She sat perfectly still, letting the degrading assumption settle into the warm, cedar-scented air between them. Her mind was already racing, furiously calculating the grim, suffocating reality of her life. She was drowning in debt and despair. If selling her body to this imposing, impossibly wealthy man sitting inches away was the only viable way to secure the fifty thousand dollars she so desperately needed to save her father and her home, she would do it. But she promised herself it was going to be strictly on her own terms, not the twisted ones her family had planned for her.

She shifted awkwardly in her seat, cringing visibly as the muddy, freezing rainwater from her soaked clothes dripped steadily onto the glossy, pristine leather seats of his expensive sports car. She was ruining the immaculate interior, leaving a trail of the storm behind her.

"Okay," the man finally said, his deep, resonant voice slicing through the quiet tension. "I see where this is going. Fine."

He issued the terse confirmation and fell silent. He didn't offer another word of conversation, nor did he reprimand her for the muddy mess she was making. He simply shifted the heavy gearshift, and the car roared smoothly down the dark street.

Shortly after, the sleek sports car glided to a halt in front of the glamorous, brilliantly lit entrance of a five-star hotel. Freya felt a knot of pure anxiety tighten in her stomach as she stepped out into the humid night air, trailing nervously behind his confident, tailored stride.

As they walked through the grand sliding doors, Freya’s soaked, muddy shoes sloshed embarrassingly across the immaculate, highly polished marble floor of the massive lobby. Mirrored ceilings and crystal chandeliers illuminated every pathetic detail of her ruined appearance. She kept her head ducked, deeply aware of how entirely out of place she looked, trailing behind him to the front desk.

The female receptionist practically beamed the second they approached, her eyes wide with excessive, fawning adoration.

"Good evening, Mr. Abernathy," the woman gushed, leaning over the high mahogany counter to give him a better view of her smile. "Housekeeping has just been to your room to ensure all the linens are perfectly fresh for you."

Freya internally rolled her eyes at the blatant, almost desperate display of affection. The receptionist was practically vibrating with eagerness.

The man threw back a charming, practiced wink. "Thanks. And call me Killian," he said smoothly.

"Of course, Killian," the worker cooed, entirely ignoring Freya's dripping presence.

Killian didn't spare the woman another glance as he gestured for Freya to follow him toward the private, gold-trimmed elevators.

Killian led her down the quiet hallway and unlocked the door to a massive, opulent suite. It was a staggering display of wealth, decorated entirely in plush whites and creams, accented by gleaming, flawless gold fixtures. Freya stood frozen in the entryway, clutching her ruined bag tightly to her chest. She was dripping wet, shivering violently from the lingering chill of the storm, and utterly terrified of the reality of what she was about to do. Yet, beneath the overwhelming panic, she remained firmly resolved to proposition him for the money.

Killian walked further into the room, loosening his expensive silk tie. He glanced back and let out an annoyed groan at her hesitation.

"Don't just stand there dripping on the carpet," he commanded, snatching a thick, fluffy white towel from a nearby chair and tossing it directly at her. "Go take a shower and dry off."

Freya caught the towel, clutching its dry warmth like a lifeline. She shuffled past him, hyper-aware of his dark eyes tracking her movements, and slipped into the expansive en-suite bathroom.

The space was stunning, larger than her entire apartment, completely draped in more flawless marble and gold. But as she approached the massive, glass-enclosed tub, her resolve immediately faltered. She stared helplessly at the array of confusing, high-end dials, modern silver nozzles, and complicated fixtures. There was no simple handle to turn, no clear indication of how to even start the water. Her confidence shrank by the second, replaced by a wave of humiliating inadequacy. She felt entirely out of her depth.

Before she could figure it out, the bathroom door swung open. Killian stepped in, his expression tight with sheer impatience. He found her standing completely frozen in confusion, still clutching the towel and dripping onto the expensive tiles.

"What are you doing?" he demanded.

"I... I don't know how to operate the tub," Freya squeaked out, the embarrassing admission burning her throat.

Killian rolled his eyes dramatically. He stepped fully into the bathroom, closing the distance between them with purposeful, predatory strides. He crowded her backward, stepping so close she was forced to retreat until her back hit the cold, hard porcelain of the massive tub.

"Really?" he mocked, a dangerous, arrogant glint in his dark eyes as he looked down at her. "None of your other clients have provided such generous accommodations?"

He leaned in so close she could feel the intense, intoxicating heat radiating off his solid body. The rich scent of his cedarwood cologne was overwhelming, mixing with the dampness of the room. He reached right past her, his arm brushing her trembling shoulder, and effortlessly twisted one of the complex silver dials to turn on the water. A hot stream immediately cascaded from the showerhead above.

He pulled back, his lips curling into a cynical smirk, and walked out without another word, leaving her to the heat of the steam.

Freya let out a shaky breath and stripped off her heavy, ruined clothes. Stepping under the hot spray, she vigorously washed away the grime, the mud, and the horrific events of the storm. But as the physical dirt washed down the drain, an intense internal battle raged against her own deep-seated disgust. She was about to sell herself to a total stranger.

Stepping out of the shower, she wiped a clear circle in the deeply fogged mirror. She stared intently into her own tired eyes. She forced herself to mentally strip away the persona of the broken, drowned girl who had been sobbing on the asphalt. She had to be a woman actively taking charge of her destiny. She was going to sleep with this wealthy stranger, and she was going to extract the fifty thousand dollars she needed.

When Freya finally emerged from the bathroom, wearing nothing but a fluffy, oversized white hotel robe, the atmosphere in the bedroom had completely shifted. Killian was sitting on the very edge of the massive, king-sized bed. His dress shirt was completely gone. His bare chest was broad, heavily muscled, and exuded a raw, deeply predatory energy that immediately pinned her exactly where she stood.

He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto her. "Come closer," he commanded.

Before her shaking limbs could even process the instruction, he reached out. His large hand wrapped firmly around her arm, pulling her forcefully against his hard body. With a swift, effortless motion, he flipped her onto her back directly onto the soft mattress.

Freya let out a sharp gasp as the breath was knocked out of her lungs. Instantly, Killian was hovering over her. His bare chest brushed against the soft cotton of her robe, his oppressive weight caging her in completely. He looked down at her wide, panicked eyes and the rapid, uneven rise and fall of her chest, letting out a low, dark laugh that vibrated against her skin.

"Are you really going to keep up this innocent act?" he questioned, his voice a mocking rumble in the quiet room. He stared heavily at her ragged breaths. "I'll be blunt. While some men might enjoy the whole fake prudishness routine, it is not my preference."

His face closed in on hers, his sharp jawline mere inches away. Freya's heart hammered frantically against her ribs. The situation was absolutely terrifying, yet entirely overwhelming in how incredibly sexy it had suddenly become. The heat of his skin and the sheer dominance of his posture short-circuited her brain.

"I won't kiss you," Killian declared coldly, his eyes devoid of any warmth. "This is merely a business deal, after all."

Quivering beneath him, her pulse racing with a chaotic mixture of raw fear and undeniable anticipation, Freya forced herself to agree. "Right," she managed to say, her voice breathless and tight. "Just a business deal."

She needed to ground herself. Reaching up with a nervous habit she had carried for years, she pushed her damp hair back from her face, tucking the heavy strands securely behind her ears to clear her vision.

The exact moment she made the gesture, everything stopped.

The cold, calculating danger that had been burning in Killian's dark eyes completely vanished. It was instantly wiped away, replaced by a look of profound, devastating shock. The color drained from his face, and his entire body went rigidly still, as if he were staring directly at a ghost hovering over the bed.

"Isadora," he whispered, the name tearing from his throat.

A sharp, distinct twinge of fear pricked at Freya’s spine. In the span of a single heartbeat, the callous, arrogant stranger hovering over her completely morphed. The hard lines of his face softened into someone incredibly sweet, desperate, and aching with tender vulnerability.

Entirely forgetting his own strict, coldly delivered rule about kissing, Killian lowered his head. His lips crashed aggressively onto hers. It wasn't the calculated move of a client; it was a fiery, deeply passionate kiss fueled by years of pent-up agony and longing.

Every single nerve in Freya's body ignited at the intense physical contact. The sheer force of his mouth on hers was intoxicating, his warmth seeping into her frozen bones. For a split second, she felt herself melting into the overwhelming sensation, her body responding naturally to the undeniable, electric chemistry erupting between them.

But then, his earlier, murmured words echoed loudly in her head.

Isadora.

The cold reality slammed into her, snapping her out of the heated haze. She planted her hands firmly against his bare, hard chest and forcefully shoved him back, breaking the kiss abruptly. She lay there, panting heavily, her chest heaving as she stared up at him.

Killian looked down at her, his dark eyes clouded with an expression of pure, unadulterated longing. His breathing was just as erratic as hers, his gaze completely captivated by her face.

But Freya’s mind was razor-sharp with the bitter, chilling truth. He wasn't looking at her. He wasn't kissing her. Whoever this Isadora woman was, she had completely taken Freya's place in his mind.
