A Shattered Heart in the Rain
Freya froze completely dead in her tracks. Her soaked sneakers remained glued to the cheap linoleum floor of the dormitory hallway. The freezing rainwater dripping from her clothes suddenly felt like shards of ice piercing directly into her skin.
*No. I must be hearing things. I’m just exhausted. My mind is playing cruel tricks on me.*
Her brain desperately scrambled to rationalize the sickeningly sweet, familiar voice echoing from her own open doorway. She held her breath, her chest tight with an agonizing sense of dread, and slowly peeked around the corner. In a fraction of a second, the very last remaining shred of hope in her miserable, chaotic life completely fizzled away, leaving behind nothing but a gaping, bleeding void.
Standing right there in the doorway of her room was her boyfriend, Wes. And his hands were aggressively roaming all over her roommate, Genevieve Lourdes.
Freya’s eyes widened in sheer horror. The sight was undeniably blatant. Their clothes were entirely disheveled—Wes’s shirt was half-untucked, wrinkled from heavy friction, and Genevieve’s top was askew, exposing a harsh expanse of her collarbone. Genevieve looked up at him through her thick lashes, sensually running her manicured fingers through his messy hair. It didn’t require a single ounce of imagination to figure out exactly what they had been doing in that room just moments before Freya arrived.
"It’s me or her, Wes," Genevieve cooed maliciously. She casually lifted a finger, slowly and deliberately tracing teasing circles flat against Wes’s chest. Her voice held a toxic, playful rhythm that made Freya’s stomach violently churn. "It’s me or Freya."
The hallway seemed to stretch, the silence ringing in Freya’s ears. She waited for him to push Genevieve away. She waited for him to defend their relationship, to claim it was a mistake, to say he loved Freya.
"It’s you, Lourdes," Wes answered without a second of hesitation. His voice was firm, sickeningly resolute. "You’re the one I want to be with."
The absolute devastation hit Freya with the force of a freight train. Her entire world shattered instantly, the broken pieces dripping onto the cold floor right alongside the murky rainwater pooling at her feet. She tried to swallow the sharp lump in her throat, but the pain was too sudden, too enormous. She choked back a harsh sob, but a broken, pathetic sound escaped her trembling lips anyway.
Genevieve’s head immediately snapped in the direction of the noise. For a brief, fleeting second, the roommate actually had the basic decency to look slightly shocked at being caught red-handed. But that hesitation vanished in a heartbeat. A slow, wicked grin spread across her heavily glossed lips, and she actually giggled.
"Well, well. It seems we have an audience," Genevieve taunted, her voice echoing off the cinderblock walls. "Who’s there? Maybe we’ll give you a show."
A violent cascade of raw emotions bombarded Freya’s system. Staggering betrayal. Blinding anger. Crushing sadness. Frantic denial. More than anything, her flight response screamed at her to turn around and run as fast and as far as her legs could carry her into the storm outside. *This cannot be happening. I must have misheard him,* she chanted internally, clinging to a pathetic delusion. *It’s just a misunderstanding. It has to be.*
But there was no running away. Taking a deep, shuddering breath that rattled her ribs, Freya forced herself to step fully around the corner and into their direct line of sight.
Genevieve’s smug, teasing expression faltered slightly as she took in Freya’s pathetic state, while all the color instantly drained from Wes’s handsome face. He went absolutely pale, his eyes widening in pure panic.
"Freya," Wes gasped, his voice cracking as he stumbled backward. "I—"
"Oh, dear," Genevieve interrupted seamlessly. She recovered from her momentary surprise with terrifying speed, her hands refusing to release their tight grip on Wes’s waist. She leaned her weight against him possessively. "It seems we’ve been caught. But honestly? I suppose it’s for the best. It’s about time we aired this all out."
Genevieve smiled directly at Freya, a vicious, calculated glint shining in her dark eyes. Freya knew exactly what she looked like standing there: a sad, wet, pathetic, and entirely broken woman. And she knew exactly how much twisted joy Genevieve derived from seeing her like this. Genevieve had a notorious reputation around campus. She was the girl boys drooled over and other girls fiercely despised. She was famous for stealing boyfriends, wrecking relationships, and leaving a trail of broken hearts just for the thrill of the hunt.
Freya had foolishly thought that sharing a dorm room with her would offer some sort of immunity. Instead, it merely placed a giant target directly on her back. Wes was handsome, intelligent, wealthy, and passionately taken. He was everything Genevieve wanted in a prize. Freya had been so blindly confident that Wes’s love would act as an impenetrable shield. But apparently, he didn’t love her enough. *Or maybe I’m just not enough,* Freya thought, the toxic whisper slicing through her mind.
"Let’s go into your room so we can talk this out," Wes stammered, attempting a soothing, reasonable tone. He finally managed to disentangle himself from Genevieve’s clinging hands and motioned awkwardly for Freya to come closer.
Freya numbly took a half-step forward, but Genevieve swiftly jumped right back into the center of the dynamic.
"Actually, we should go to The Brass Lantern," Genevieve suggested brightly, her tone utterly devoid of empathy. "We can talk everything over with some nice drinks. Doesn’t that sound like a genuinely great idea?"
Another brutal stab straight to the heart. The Brass Lantern was a popular, upscale local bar. More importantly, it was the exact location where Wes and Freya had met, and where they had shared their magical first date. Genevieve knew that fact perfectly well. Not only did she relish stealing a man, but she also lived to humiliate her victims as thoroughly and deeply as possible. It was a sick sport to her.
"I really don’t think that’s a good—" Wes started to object, glancing nervously between the two girls.
"That’s fine," Freya deadpanned, cutting him off sharply. There was absolutely zero spirit in her voice. She sounded completely hollowed out, a ghost standing in her own shoes. She refused to let Genevieve see the profound depths of how broken she truly felt. And she adamantly refused to let Wes see the agonizing pain he had just inflicted upon her. Swallowing the bitter taste of bile and heartbreak, she forced out the words. "A drink sounds great."
"Perfect. That’s settled then. Give me just a second to freshen up my makeup and grab us a couple of umbrellas, okay?" Genevieve leaned in and planted a deliberate, wet kiss directly onto Wes’s mouth before smoothly darting past him and into the dorm room.
Freya stood frozen in the hallway, enduring yet another vicious stab of pain. Wes stood a few feet away, shifting his weight uncomfortably. He stared at the ceiling, the floor, the walls—anywhere but Freya’s face. The narrow hallway felt like a coffin, the walls closing in rapidly around her. All Freya wanted was to collapse onto the dirty floor and completely submit to her hysterical emotions. But she couldn’t. She wouldn't let herself feel the damage. Not yet.
"Freya, listen—" Wes tried again, taking a hesitant step toward her.
"We’ll talk at the bar, alright?" Freya answered through rigidly clenched teeth. Her hands were balled into tight, white-knuckled fists at her sides, and small, uncontrollable tremors violently quaked through her cold body.
Wes smartly clamped his mouth shut. The tension in the hallway mounted into a suffocating, palpable entity, suffocating them both in the heavy silence. After what felt like the absolute longest, most grueling five minutes of Freya’s existence, Genevieve finally emerged. Her face was powdered to perfection, her lips glossed, her curls flawlessly coiffed, and she held a single, small black umbrella in her hand. Freya noted the missing second umbrella but said absolutely nothing.
"Shall we?" Genevieve chirped.
Wes and Genevieve strode confidently past Freya, and she mechanically followed behind them, stepping out of the dorm building and into the brutal reality of the raging storm. Night had fully fallen over the campus. Rumbles of aggressive thunder rolled continuously in the air, and bright flashes of lightning violently tore through the pitch-black sky.
As they walked through the freezing downpour, they approached Wes’s car in the designated covered parking structure. It was a sleek, immaculately detailed silver sedan. It had been a lavish high school graduation gift from his wealthy parents, and Wes obsessed over keeping it in absolutely pristine condition. Operating purely on muscle memory, Freya thought of the warm, comforting heated leather seats inside and automatically walked around toward the front passenger side door, just as she had done hundreds of times before.
"Oh, Freya, no," Genevieve sneered immediately, stepping quickly to block the door. "That’s my spot."
Freya stopped, the cold rain dripping from her eyelashes.
"You can ride in the back," Wes offered cowardly, moving to open the rear passenger door for her.
"But, Wes," Genevieve pouted maliciously, batting her eyelashes at him. "Look at her. She’s completely soaked. She’s dripping wet. She’ll absolutely ruin the pristine leather interior of your car. We really can’t let that happen, baby."
It was another highly calculated shot aimed entirely at humiliation. Genevieve wanted Freya to argue. She wanted to force Freya into a pathetic, desperate fight over a seat in a car just to prove her own dominance. She fed off causing emotional turmoil. But Freya flat-out refused to participate in this twisted, demeaning game.
"You two go in the car," Freya stated flatly, her voice cutting cleanly through the sound of the rain. "I’ll meet you there."
"Frey…" Wes reached a hand out toward her shoulder.
Freya instantly recoiled, violently backing away from his hand. Her skin crawled at the mere thought of his touch. "I’ll meet you there," she repeated coldly.
Without giving them another glance, she turned on her heel and began sprinting on foot through the freezing storm in the direction of the bar. Her heart violently thrashed against her ribs with every pounding footstep. She desperately longed to stop, to break down on the sidewalk, to release the massive floodgate of emotions tearing her apart from the inside out.
She took advantage of the dark, empty streets and fought a brutal internal war to collect herself. *Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Don’t cry.* She chanted the words like a religious mantra, syncing them to the rhythm of her splashing sneakers.
A moment later, she heard the smooth purr of an expensive engine. She deliberately kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, trying her absolute hardest not to notice as Wes’s sleek silver sedan smoothly drove right past her. She tried desperately to ignore the agonizing sight through the passenger window—Genevieve throwing her head back in cruel, mocking laughter as they comfortably watched her literally running through a freezing downpour. Freya swallowed the massive lump of humiliation. She lied to herself, insisting the visual didn't sting. She locked her heart away, intentionally staying completely numb to the searing pain.
*Don’t cry. Don’t feel.*
By the time she finally reached the heavy wooden doors of The Brass Lantern, her legs were trembling with heavy exertion, and her lungs were completely on fire. She pushed open the door and stepped inside. Immediately, a massive wave of warm air and the heavy pang of deep nostalgia hit her like a physical blow.
She used to love The Brass Lantern. It was elaborately decorated to resemble an authentic 1920s-style speakeasy, featuring dark mahogany wood, dim amber lighting, and plush velvet booths. A low, smooth jazz melody floated through the air over the hum of the lively crowd. It had always been their sanctuary. Not even a month ago, she had been nestled securely in Wes’s lap in this exact room, celebrating their anniversary. He had tenderly kissed her forehead and vehemently promised that they would always be together, aggressively gushing about his grand plans for their shared future.
Now, he had effectively erased her entire existence for a cheap thrill.
*After tonight is done,* Freya promised herself fiercely, *I will never, ever set foot inside this place again.*
Scanning the crowded room, she quickly spotted them. Wes and Genevieve were already comfortably seated at Freya’s favorite corner table. Taking a deep, fortifying breath, she approached the booth. They were seated right next to each other, their shoulders brushing, leaving the empty space directly across the table for her. A dark red drink was already waiting at her place setting.
"I ordered a sangria for you. I know it’s your absolute favorite," Wes said softly, his eyes filled with a pathetic, cowardly pity.
Freya stared blankly at him. She didn't bother sitting down. Knowing she desperately needed the liquid courage to survive the next five minutes, she picked up the glass and downed the entire sweet, fruity drink in one long, continuous breath. She slammed the empty glass back onto the table. The instant burn of the alcohol hit her stomach, sending a rapid buzz straight to her freezing head. *Good,* she thought.
Both Wes and Genevieve looked genuinely surprised by her aggressive chug, but Genevieve quickly regained her smug composure.
"Listen to me, Wes," Freya stated flatly, wiping her wet mouth with the back of her shivering hand. "I don’t have the energy for this exhausting drama. If you want to break up with me so you can keep screwing around with Genevieve behind my back, that is completely fine. Consider us officially broken up."
Genevieve visibly bristled. She was clearly infuriated by Freya’s stoic, unbreakable resilience. She had dragged Freya out here to witness a meltdown. She wanted Freya to shatter, to cry, to beg.
"We really didn’t mean for this to happen, or to hurt you," Genevieve lied smoothly, placing a comforting hand over Wes’s. "It’s just that you constantly worked so many hours, and Wes got so incredibly lonely. I merely kept him company one night. One thing naturally led to another, and we just..."
"You slept with her?" Freya seethed, her eyes locking onto Wes with laser precision.
"We’re in love, Freya," Wes added boldly, suddenly finding his fake courage. He looked at Genevieve like she was a goddess. "It’s a deep, passionate, and true love. I really am sorry if this reality is just too much for you to handle."
"I just said, I do not care," Freya reiterated sharply, completely unmoved by his ridiculous declaration. She shifted her deadened gaze over to her roommate. "You want him? You have my total permission. You can have him."
Genevieve’s face flushed with deep irritation. Her victory felt incredibly hollow if the loser didn't care. Infuriated, she turned violently personal.
"You know, this is actually entirely your fault," Genevieve spat, leaning aggressively across the table in a desperate attempt to tear Freya down. "If you hadn’t been such a remarkably shitty, neglectful girlfriend, none of this would have ever happened. I mean, Jesus, just look at you. All you ever do is work your miserable jobs and study. You never even try to look good for him. You’re such a massive prude in bed. It’s absolutely no wonder he got so bored of you."
A wicked, triumphant glint flashed dangerously in Genevieve’s eyes. She clearly had one more card to play, one final twisted knife to break Freya’s stoic shell.
"Honestly? Maybe you should have actually learned a thing or two from that incredibly loose friend of yours, Tamsin," Genevieve mocked, her voice dripping with pure venom. "She certainly knows her way around the boys on campus, if you know what I mean." Genevieve threw her head back and let out a loud, obnoxious, piercing laugh.
The tightly coiled restraint holding Freya’s sanity together finally snapped in half.
In one lightning-fast motion, Freya reached across the table, grabbed Genevieve’s full cocktail glass, and violently hurled the dark, sticky liquid directly into Genevieve’s smug, laughing face.
The loud splash silenced the immediate area. Genevieve gasped in utter shock, the ice cubes bouncing off her chest as the dark liquor ruined her perfectly styled hair and dripped down her expensive top. She jumped up from the booth instantly, screaming in feigned, exaggerated outrage.
"How dare you?!" Genevieve shrieked, wiping the sticky alcohol from her eyes. "I was actually hoping to somehow keep our friendship completely intact, but I can clearly see that is utterly impossible now!"
Freya slammed the empty glass onto the wooden table with a loud crack. "First of all, we were never friends, you back-stabbing skank!" Freya shouted back, her voice echoing over the music. "Second of all, you keep Tamsin’s name out of your filthy mouth! You can say whatever the hell you want about me, but I will absolutely not let you sit there and talk shit about my true friends!"
"You’re just a pathetic, bitter loser who is jealous that I got your man!" Genevieve shrieked back, her face red with rage and embarrassment.
"You. Can. Have. Him," Freya repeated fiercely, spacing out every single syllable for maximum impact.
By this point, the loud commotion had drawn the attention of the entire bar. Dozens of patrons were openly staring at the spectacle, watching the drama unfold. And Freya found that she absolutely didn't care anymore. Her heart was racing, the adrenaline masking the freezing cold of her wet clothes.
Having said her piece, she spun on her heel, fully intending to leave the bar and never look back.
But as she moved, Wes suddenly lunged out of the booth and aggressively grabbed her arm, his grip tight and demanding.
“Don’t touch me!” Freya screamed, shaking him off as the entire bar watched. “You cheated on me! So now I’m breaking up with you. Happy? I’ve released you so you can be with your precious bitch. Congratulations. I hope you and that devil slut have a great life!”
