The King's Arrival
Brenda let out a sharp, cold laugh that scraped against the heavy silence of the bedroom, entirely dismissing the raw horror written across Aria's face.
"It absolutely does not matter if you are willing or not," Brenda sneered, her eyes raking over Aria's trembling frame with cruel amusement. "You have exactly two options today, Aria. You either accept your fate and willingly offer yourself to the Lycan, or you will spend the remainder of your miserable life rotting away in the deepest, darkest dungeons of the Alpha's estate. It is your choice, but the result for us remains the same."
Without waiting for a response, Brenda grabbed Aria's thin wrist with a brutal, unyielding grip. She quickly fastened a delicate flower corsage around the pale skin. The pristine white petals were heavily adorned with tiny, silver jingle bells. As Brenda shoved her arm away, the bells chimed into the quiet room. It was a cheerful, sickeningly bright sound that felt like a deliberate, cruel mockery of her current reality. With every slight, terrified movement Aria made, the bells sang out, marking the inescapable steps of her impending doom.
Pale, trembling, and feeling entirely detached from her own body, Aria was roughly escorted out of the house. The heavy, suffocating weight of her reality crushed down on her chest as she was forced into the backseat of her father’s car. Chloe slid into the seat next to her, her posture radiating smug satisfaction.
In the driver’s seat, Garrett adjusted the rearview mirror. His cold, unforgiving blue eyes immediately locked onto Aria. He did not look at her with an ounce of paternal warmth. Whenever he looked at her, he saw nothing but an embarrassing abomination, a stain on his bloodline.
"I hope to the Goddess that the Lycan King actually accepts you," Garrett growled, his deep voice vibrating with pure malice. "Because if you are rejected, do not even think about crawling back. You will never be allowed to return to this family."
The sheer finality in his tone shattered the last fragile remnants of Aria’s composure. In a final, desperate attempt to save her own life, the words spilled from her mouth before she could stop them.
"Daddy," Aria pleaded, her voice cracking as tears welled in her eyes. "Can I just leave the pack? Please? Let me go find my mother in the human town. I won't ever bother you again. I swear it."
Garrett’s reaction was instantaneous and terrifyingly violent. With a feral, enraged snarl, he slammed on the brakes, throwing the car into a violent halt. In a massive blur of movement, he twisted around, reaching over the console. His thick, calloused hand shot into the backseat and wrapped tightly around Aria’s delicate throat.
He squeezed with lethal force, pinning her head against the leather seat and violently shaking her. Aria gagged, her hands flying up to claw frantically at his thick wrists. Her nails dug into his skin, but his grip was like iron. The oxygen vanished from her lungs, and dark spots immediately began dancing at the edges of her vision.
"Garrett, stop!" Brenda’s voice snapped sharply through the suffocating chaos.
She reached over from the passenger seat, forcefully yanking Garrett’s massive shoulder back. Her intervention was not born of any sudden motherly love or pity for the dying girl. Her eyes were entirely cold and calculated.
"What the hell are you doing?" Brenda hissed, warning him. "She is an offering. Alpha Roman will be furious if he sees ugly, purple bruises blooming all over the neck of their tribute. Her appearance must be absolutely flawless to make an impression on the Lycan."
With a menacing, wet snarl, Garrett finally ripped his hand away from Aria’s throat. He turned back around, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned stark white, and slammed his foot on the gas. Aria collapsed against the seat, coughing violently as she sucked in desperate, jagged breaths of air. Her throat burned with every inhale.
Beside her, Chloe watched the entire display of violence with a cruel, highly satisfied smirk. She leaned in close, her shoulder brushing against the fine silk of Aria's dress. "Wipe those pathetic tears, moron," Chloe whispered maliciously, rolling her eyes.
The remainder of the drive was drowned in a suffocating silence. They drove deep into the dense, snow-covered forest, navigating the winding, isolated roads until Alpha Roman’s massive mansion finally loomed into view.
The estate was heavily fortified. Dozens of shifting guards prowled the perimeter, their massive wolf forms pacing aggressively through the thick snow, while heavily armed sentries stood watch on the balconies and rooftops. The entire pack grounds felt tense, preparing for something immensely powerful.
The moment Garrett parked the car beneath the grand portico, Aria was forced out. The biting, freezing air of the forest hit her exposed skin, but the cold was nothing compared to the sight waiting for her near the grand staircase.
Her eyes immediately locked onto Ryder.
He stood near the entrance, looking as effortlessly gorgeous as ever, with Sienna draped possessively over his arm. Sienna clung to him like a second skin, her eyes flashing with a toxic mix of jealousy and triumph. Both of them stared down at Aria with unbridled, undisguised loathing.
Despite the agonizing betrayal that had shattered her heart, the inescapable chemical pull of the mate bond flared to life hot and heavy within Aria’s chest. It was a humiliating, instinctual craving that made her insides twist.
But then, a cold, paralyzing horror washed over her.
Her inner wolf, Lyra, was completely dormant. Usually, a wolf would be practically vibrating with frenzied joy at the mere presence of their fated mate. But deep within Aria’s consciousness, Lyra remained entirely silent and unresponsive, curled up in a deadened, empty void.
Before Aria's mind could fully spiral into a panic over what her wolf's silence meant, Garrett’s thick fingers dug painfully into the soft flesh of her upper arm. He jerked her forward, dragging her away from Ryder's heated gaze and forcing her through the grand double doors of the mansion.
Inside the main hall, the atmosphere was unimaginably thick. Alpha Roman and five of his highest-ranking council members sat at the large meeting table, their bodies wound painfully tight. They radiated a suffocating, heavy anxiety, looking entirely terrified, as if they were sitting in the presence of a god they feared would strike them dead.
Standing near the massive floor-to-ceiling window was a tall, powerfully built man. His broad back was to the room, long, dark curls falling past his tense shoulders.
Garrett hauled Aria directly into the center of the grand room. The sudden movement caught the mysterious man's attention, and he slowly turned around.
Aria's breath hitched painfully in her bruised throat.
He was breathtakingly handsome. He possessed a regal, ancient beauty that was so aggressively dominant and striking it made a man like Ryder look like a mere, unformed boy. But beneath the stunning, flawless angles of his face lay a terrifying, overwhelming predatory aura. The sheer intensity radiating from him made her blood run entirely cold.
Alpha Roman cleared his throat, his voice lacking its usual booming authority. "This is Aria, daughter of Garrett Vilek," he announced, gesturing nervously to her. Then, he turned to the imposing stranger. "And this is Alpha Zane, the feared Lycan King of the Shadowwood."
Zane stepped away from the window.
He moved toward her with the silent, fluid, and confident strides of an apex predator. The sheer, suffocating power exuding from his massive frame caused every single person in the room—including her ruthless father—to immediately step back in instinctual, helpless fear.
Aria froze completely, her muscles locking up as Zane closed the final distance between them. He leaned down, his towering presence completely overshadowing her small frame. Instantly, she was enveloped in his intoxicating scent—a rich, dizzying blend of fresh pine, dark cedar, and the sharp chill of cool morning mist. It invaded her senses, leaving her mind spinning wildly out of control as she stared up into his sharp, assessing green eyes.
He looked down at her, the terrifying weight of his gaze pinning her in place, and prepared to speak.
