Saved by the Beast
POV: Elara.
The strange, electric shift in the atmosphere still clung to my skin like an invisible weight, but my exhausted mind simply couldn't process it anymore. I was running on absolute fumes. My limbs ached with a deep, hollow fatigue after a grueling twentieth birthday spent deliberately distracting myself among the towering, dusty stacks at the campus library. Turning twenty wasn't a milestone I wanted to celebrate; it was just another agonizing reminder of everything I had lost, so I had buried myself in art history books until my vision blurred.
The impending danger of the night completely bypassed my fogged brain as I trudged down the damp pavement. The streetlights flickered above, casting long, distorted shadows that danced in the biting wind, but I was too numb to care. That was, until I pulled my phone from my coat pocket and the bright screen violently pierced the darkness.
There was a frantic, urgent text from Phaedra sitting on my lock screen.
*Dangerous rogues spotted near the Florence border. Absolutely DO NOT walk home alone tonight, Elara. Text me back immediately.*
I stopped dead in my tracks, my blood running cold as the words sank in. I swallowed hard, cursing under my breath. Of course, I was already walking alone. And glancing at the digital clock in the corner of my screen, I saw it was well past ten at night. In the middle of an active rogue warning.
My pace instantly quickened into a terrified, stumbling jog. I clutched my heavy bag against my chest, my eyes darting frantically to the dark alleyways and dense treelines that lined the edge of the street. *Just a few more blocks,* I chanted silently, my heart hammering against my ribs. *You can make it.*
I hadn't even made it past the first dark block when a low, guttural howl completely shattered the heavy silence of the city.
The sound was raw, feral, and close. Way too close.
Panic surged violently through my veins, instantly freezing the breath in my lungs. My mind screamed for my wolf, but I was met with nothing but a horrifying, hollow void. It was my harsh, pathetic reality—my wolf, Myrk, had been completely, agonizingly silent ever since my fated bond with Kovak shattered. She had retreated into the darkest depths of my soul, leaving me totally isolated. I was utterly defenseless. Without her speed, her instincts, or her strength, I was essentially a fragile human trapped in a terrifying world of lethal, merciless predators.
I sprinted desperately for my dorm, my lungs burning as the freezing air tore through my throat. The heavy pounding of massive paws echoed behind me, rapidly surrounding me in the pitch-black darkness. The rhythmic thudding was closing in from all sides. I was being hunted, and I was entirely outmatched.
Suddenly, something massive and impossibly heavy slammed directly into my side.
The brutal impact sent my frail body flying through the air. I hit the harsh pavement with a sickening thud, skidding violently across the rough asphalt. I groaned in excruciating pain, the metallic taste of blood instantly flooding my mouth as my knees and elbows scraped raw. Gasping for air that refused to come, I forced my heavy head up.
A huge, feral rogue stood just a few feet away. His fur was matted with filth, his blood-shot eyes locked onto me with a sickening, primal hunger. He snarled, thick drool dripping from his yellowed fangs as he stalked slowly toward me. He was clearly savoring my palpable terror, drawing out the moment before the kill. I scrambled backward on my bleeding hands, whimpering helplessly as the monster loomed closer.
"Hey!"
A commanding voice suddenly rang out from the shadows behind the beast.
I gasped, looking past the rogue to see Beta Alessio stepping into the faint glow of the streetlight. He was already half-shifted, his eyes glowing fiercely and his sharp claws extended. Fury rolled off him in waves as he stared down the feral wolf.
"You're done running," Alessio growled, furiously ordering the rogue. "Turn and fight me."
The rogue paused, its massive head snapping back toward Alessio. But then, a cruel, calculated intelligence flashed in its blood-shot eyes, and it turned its attention entirely back to me.
"Good job, Elara," Alessio called out encouragingly, completely misreading the situation. "Now you shifted and blocked him perfectly. Hold your ground!"
My blood instantly ran ice cold. He didn't know. Nobody knew.
"I—I didn’t—" My voice trembled uncontrollably as absolute panic swallowed me whole.
Alessio frowned, his glowing eyes narrowing in the dark. "You can shift, right?"
"No! Beta—I can’t! I can’t shift!" I screamed, tears of sheer terror blurring my vision.
Alessio's fierce expression froze in utter horror as the devastating truth registered. He lunged forward, but it was already too late. The massive rogue pushed off its hind legs, leaping through the air and lunging straight for my exposed throat.
I screamed, throwing my arms up over my face and bracing for the brutal end.
But the fatal bite never came.
Instead, a monstrous blur of silver-gray lightning collided with the rogue mid-air. The deafening impact sounded exactly like two cars crashing head-on at top speed. The sheer force of the collision sent a shockwave through the ground, rattling my aching bones.
I lowered my trembling arms and stared in absolute shock. The beast that had just saved me wasn't a normal werewolf.
It was a Lycan.
He was towering, heavily scarred, and built like a god of war. His silver-gray fur shimmered ominously under the broken streetlights. He radiated an overwhelming aura of terrifying power and an ancient, suffocating grief that made the very air around him feel heavy.
It was Alpha Dante. The silent, legendary beast of Florence himself.
He didn't even waste a second glancing in my direction. With brutal, calculated, and terrifyingly graceful strikes, he became a violent storm of teeth and claws. He completely decimated the feral rogue in mere seconds, moving with a lethal fluidity that defied his massive size. With one final, devastating swipe, he tossed the beast aside like a broken toy, leaving it unconscious and bleeding out on the cold asphalt.
Breathing heavily, the massive Lycan slowly turned his massive head. His glowing, fiery amber eyes locked dead onto my shivering form.
I trembled on the cold ground, my heart threatening to beat right out of my chest. I expected him to look down at me with disgust for my pathetic weakness, for being a wolfless liability on his borders. But his heavy, intense gaze wasn't cruel at all. It felt as though he could peer straight through my flesh and see everything—all my terror, my deep shame, and all my broken, ruined pieces. And for a breathless second, staring into those fiery eyes, I felt like he recognized those pieces perfectly, piecing them together from the shards of his own shattered soul.
"Alpha..." Alessio stepped forward cautiously, bowing his head in deep respect. "I will handle the rogue."
The massive Lycan didn't break eye contact with me, but he gave Alessio a small, tight nod.
Then, right before my eyes, he shifted. Unlike a normal, bone-breaking, agonizing werewolf transition, his massive anatomy reformed with a swift, eerie, and quiet grace. It was seamless. In seconds, he stood tall before us—Dante De Luca, a breathtakingly intimidating legend. He was bare-chested, heavily scarred, and covered in a mixture of dirt and fresh rogue blood.
His glowing eyes stayed firmly locked onto my shivering form.
"Are you harmed?" he asked.
His voice was incredibly deep, rough, and vibrating through the air like the low rumble of thunder after a violent storm. It sent a shiver straight down my spine that had absolutely nothing to do with the freezing wind.
"No... Um I... I don't think so," I blinked, stammering pathetically as I remained entirely paralyzed by shock.
He didn't offer a hand to help me up. He just stared at me for another fraction of a second before turning sharply to his Beta.
"Take her back immediately," Dante ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And heavily reinforce the territory borders."
Without uttering another word, and without looking back at me a second time, the Alpha turned and disappeared silently into the dense, dark treeline, blending into the shadows as if he had never been there at all.
Alessio stepped to my side, gently grabbing my arm to help me stand. I winced as my bruised muscles protested, leaning heavily against him.
"You okay?" Alessio asked softly.
I nodded shakily, my eyes still glued to the spot where the Lycan had vanished. "I didn't know he..."
"Would care?" Alessio finished for me with a faint, bewildered smile. "Yeah. Neither did I. Alpha Dante never personally shows up to the borders unless it’s incredibly important."
I looked back toward the dark, swaying trees, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. The one wolf in the entire world I thought was too isolated, too locked away in his own tragic past to care about anyone, had just saved my life. He didn’t know me. He didn't know my name, my traumatic past, or the shameful scars I carried inside. Yet he had thrown himself into sudden, violent danger for me anyway.
As I limped slowly away from the bloodstained pavement, a profound realization washed over my exhausted mind. Maybe not all connections needed to be spoken aloud. Maybe some bonds were simply felt.
