The First Shift
POV: Elara.
The visceral crunch of my own spine snapping into place echoed in my ears, drowning out the distant murmurs of the pack. My sixteenth birthday was supposed to be a triumph. For hours, I had endured the agonizing, transformative unraveling of my human body. Muscles tore and reformed; joints cracked and shifted in ways nature never intended. The pain was blinding, a fire burning through my veins, but as it finally gave way to a sudden rush of heightened senses, I felt an incredible surge of power. My fierce wolf, Myrk, burst forth into the world under the silver light of the moon.
She was glorious. Strong, wild, and fully alive. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel like a weak, orphaned burden. I felt whole. The night air flooded my lungs, carrying a million new scents, but before the moon could even begin its descent, fate struck me with a blinding, physical force.
Without warning, an overwhelming, magnetic pull seized my very soul. It wasn't just an instinct; it was a violent yank on my chest, an undeniable call of a fated mate drawing my gaze directly across the dusty expanse of the training field.
And there he was. Kovak Severin Thorne.
He stood tall by the edge of the grounds, the powerful, charming, and highly revered son of the Head Warrior. Every girl in the Ebon-Sylvan pack admired him. He was the alpha’s trusted right hand, a warrior destined for greatness, and three years my senior. And he was mine.
Deep inside my mind, Myrk went perfectly silent in pure awe before howling in recognition. Our eyes locked across the dirt. Time suspended. My heart thundered violently against my ribs as I braced myself for the magical collision of our souls that all the pack legends promised. I waited for him to close the distance, to claim the bond that tied our very existences together.
But the magic never came.
Instead of running to me, Kovak’s expression turned to stone. His jaw tightened, his eyes hardened, and he deliberately looked away. He dismissed my existence as if I were nothing but a pathetic trick of the light.
Inside my head, Myrk let out a sharp, pathetic whimper of sheer confusion. I stumbled forward on unsteady paws, my half-wolf state clumsy and desperate. I thought maybe I was wrong. Maybe he hadn't felt the pull. Maybe the bond hadn't clicked for him yet.
The cold reality of his rejection materialized an instant later.
The heavy oak doors of the packhouse swung open, and Kestryn Pyke stepped gracefully into the cool night air. The stunning, highly privileged daughter of the Alpha didn't even glance my way. As she approached Kovak, his entire demeanor transformed. The hard, dismissive warrior vanished. He offered her a wide, breathtaking smile—the exact smile that the universe had designed for me.
The air was violently knocked out of my lungs. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling Kestryn in tightly. Right there, in front of the entire pack, in front of his fated mate, he kissed her. It wasn't a brief, polite peck. It was a real, deep, and illusion-shattering kiss that completely broke my world in half.
I stood frozen in the dirt, entirely heartbroken. My entire world cracked open and bled out onto the training field. As he finally pulled back from Kestryn's lips, his gaze flicked toward me for a fleeting fraction of a second. I saw it—a flicker of deep-seated guilt flashing behind his eyes.
He felt the bond. He knew exactly who I was to him.
He just ruthlessly buried it under his ambition. He wanted the power and prestige that came with claiming the Alpha's daughter. To him, I was merely Elara Valerion, a nameless pack orphan, a pathetic kitchen charity case who had been passed around since my parents died. I was nothing but an inconvenient obstacle in his path to greatness. So, he seamlessly pretended our sacred bond didn't exist.
Humiliated and completely paralyzed by the sheer weight of his dismissal, I stayed completely silent. I had no idea how to fight against such a cruel reality.
Following that night, my existence became a living ghost story. I spent countless nights trembling in the dark corners of my servant’s quarters, desperately trying to soothe Myrk's pained, confused howls echoing endlessly inside my mind. I could physically feel the slow, agonizing unraveling of our incomplete mate bond tearing at my chest. It felt like a jagged blade twisting in my ribs with every single breath I took.
And yet, despite the overwhelming evidence of his betrayal, some pitiful, foolish sliver of hope stubbornly clung to my battered heart. It whispered in the darkest hours of the night that he might eventually come to his senses. That maybe, if I just stayed quiet and waited, he would realize his mistake and choose me.
But the brutal days bled into unforgiving weeks, and the weeks bled into years. Now, three agonizing years later, I am left staring into the void of a crushing, insurmountable truth. The hope is gone. He truly chose Kestryn, and he has completely, utterly rejected me.
