Even with him miles away, he still had that kind of influence over me. My hand trembled as I held the phone, his voice sending a chill through my body.

“Answer me,” he commanded coldly.

I took a shaky breath, speaking up in a low, pleading voice. “I’m sorry, please don’t be mad… I didn’t mean to betray you…”

“That won’t work, Elara. Apologies and begging don’t get you anywhere with me,
