The Moonlit Encounter

The heavy, pulsing bass of the music vibrated straight up through the polished floorboards, instantly rattling my bones the moment we stepped into the Gathering. It wasn't just the blaring music that hit me; it was the overwhelming cocktail of distinct werewolf scents that immediately assaulted my heightened senses. The overpowering aromas of cheap perfumes, expensive colognes, anxious sweat, and spiking adrenaline blended into a suffocating haze. Before I could even attempt to adjust to the crushing sensory overload, Stella was gone. Easily distracted by the loud chattering and familiar voices of her classmates, she vanished completely into the dense crowd, swallowed entirely by the shifting bodies.

I didn't mind the abandonment. I had Jace. My highly protective brother graciously placed a firm hand on my elbow. He expertly guided me through the suffocating crush of dancing bodies, shielding me from wayward elbows until we reached a quiet, secluded corner of the massive ballroom.

"Go," I told him, turning my head toward his face. "I know you've got friends here. Go have fun."

I felt the subtle movement of air as he shook his head. But then, entirely without warning, Jace went as stiff as an absolute board right beside me. His breathing hitched sharply. The sudden tension rolling off his muscular frame was unmistakable.

Tilting my head closer to him, I relied on my keen senses. I asked him directly, "You smell her, don't you? Your fated mate."

Jace sucked in a sharp, shuddering breath. He squeezed my hand tightly, his fingers trembling with barely contained energy. His voice was tight with overwhelming anticipation as he confirmed it. "I do."

I didn't hesitate. The realization washed a wave of pure relief over me. I chuckled, pulling my hand from his grip and playfully shoving his solid chest, pushing him deeper into the crowded room. "Well, what are you waiting for? Go get her, Jace! Don't just stand next to the one person you know for sure isn't your mate," I told him exasperatedly.

With an eager huff, he finally stepped away. Left completely alone in the dim corner, I reached inward. Within the confines of my mind, my wolf, Nyx, remained utterly and painfully silent. It became glaringly apparent to me right then that our mate was not present in this room.

As the minutes dragged on, the physical crush of the sweaty crowd grew increasingly unbearable. The heat of so many bodies pressed closer, and the suffocating tension made it hard to breathe. I was deeply aware that my father and Victoria were out there somewhere. They had likely already spotted my arrival, and I could vividly picture them glaring daggers at my highly inappropriate, revealing attire. I needed to escape immediately.

I pressed my palm flat against the wall, relying entirely on my sharp childhood memories of the castle's layout. Smoothing my hand along the textured wallpaper, I navigated away from the funneling crowd, slipping smoothly down a deserted corridor. I found the side staircase and followed it down until my fingers found the heavy side door leading outside.

The crisp night air hit me the second I pushed the door open. The grand castle was situated incredibly close to the dense woods. Without a second thought, I completely abandoned my restrictive heels. I kicked off the painfully tight shoes I had fished out of Victoria's donation pile, leaving them discarded on the cold stone steps.

I retreated barefoot into the welcoming, comforting silence of the dense forest. My physical escape into the sensory comfort of the trees, barefoot and blind, felt like shedding a suffocating second skin. The soft grass and damp earth felt like absolute heaven against my bare soles. The roaring bass of the ballroom faded away entirely, replaced by the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of insects.

I confidently navigated the terrain, my sharp hearing perfectly guiding my steps until I heard the soft babbling of the nearby stream. I settled onto my favorite perching rock right beside the flowing water. Letting my bare legs dangle close to the cool stream below, I tilted my head back. I let the cool, ethereal moonlight wash away the sheer exhaustion of the day.

Inside my mind, Nyx huffed a heavy sigh of deep, painful disappointment about not finding our mate.

'Don't be disappointed, Nyx,' I told her softly.

She whined, her presence heavy in my head. 'How can I not be disappointed? This was our first real chance to see if we have a mate within the packs. And there's nothing.'

I gently but firmly reminded my wolf of our harsh reality. 'Even if he was in there, Nyx, you know exactly what would happen. Whoever our mate might be, he would inevitably reject us anyway the absolute second he saw my scarred skin and my unseeing eyes.'

'You don't know that, Aria! Stop saying that!' Nyx snapped back defensively, but I could feel her underlying sadness. She knew I was right; she just wasn't ready to give up yet.

Actively seeking a silver lining to her deep disappointment, I brought up the conversation I had with Jace. 'Think about his idea, Nyx. Running away. Becoming rogues.'

Nyx quieted down as I strategized aloud. "We could live entirely off our hidden savings," I murmured to the empty forest. "We can leave and go work fully under Dante's protection."

I reasoned through it logically. If Jace was finding his fated mate tonight, and if Stella managed to find hers too, they would be completely safe. They wouldn't need my protection anymore. That meant I could just leave tomorrow morning. I could finally, permanently get out from under our biological family's crushing, abusive thumb. I wouldn't be the blind burden dragging them down anymore.

"Alright then," I said aloud.

My voice carried a profound sense of relief. The true promise of ultimate freedom settled entirely over my shoulders. The claustrophobic tension from the crowded ballroom melted away into serene relief. I leaned back, letting the cool wind whip through my hair. I basked blissfully in the moonlight, feeling utterly recharged, letting the quiet tranquility of the forest heal me.

I sat there in perfect peace until the tranquility was violently broken.

Heavy, unapologetic footsteps suddenly began to crunch aggressively through the forest debris. Whoever it was, they were stomping through the dried leaves without a single ounce of subtlety. The marching was steady, incredibly heavy, and purposeful, heading in my direct direction.

Unintimidated by the approaching noise, I stayed seated. My smooth voice easily carried through the dark trees. "You know, some of us are actually trying to enjoy the quiet moonlight."

The heavy footfalls stopped momentarily. I smiled slightly to myself, turning my face back up toward the soothing moon. But then, the aggressive crunching resumed. It was noticeably louder and significantly closer than before.

The smile vanished from my lips. I pushed myself up from my reclining position, shifting into a tense, standing posture on top of the rock. I turned my blind eyes directly toward the incoming sound. The imposing figure paused right near the edge of my rock.

The forest instantly fell into a thick, suffocatingly tense silence. The wind seemed to die out. The air around me cracked with an electric, heart-stopping suspense.

Suddenly, a deep, gravelly voice completely shatters the quiet.

"What is your name?"

The sheer, vibrating baritone of his voice caressed my skin like a physical touch. A sharp gasp violently forced its way past my parted lips. I found myself entirely unable to speak. I couldn't move a single muscle. The absolute physical and emotional paralyzation locked my limbs in place. My entire body was reacting instantly and violently to a profound, undeniable magnetic pull that I fundamentally understood without any need for explanation.

In the back of my mind, Nyx began to coo in absolute delight, her previous sorrow completely eradicated.

The towering presence stepped a fraction closer, his heat radiating against the chill of the night. The imposing male voice dropped a full octave, growling this time with an intense, possessive demand.

"What is your name, mate?"

My heart pounded frantically against my ribs. Finally managing to swallow past my paralyzing shock, I parted my trembling lips. I couldn't lie to that commanding voice. I answered truthfully, the words slipping out into the tense night air.

"My name is Aria Blackwood."

The male voice responded with a breathless, heavy finality.

"I've finally found you."
