The Shattered Bond

Valerie POV.

The cold metal of the lockpick digs sharply into the sensitive pads of my fingers as I work the stubborn mechanism of Tinsley’s bedroom door. A deep, heavy sigh of pure annoyance escapes my lips, echoing faintly in the desolate, quiet hallway of the pack house. I twist the small piece of metal, gritting my teeth. It is the morning of the Alpha daughter's wedding, arguably the most important day in our pack’s recent history, and her apparent oversleeping is just another ridiculous mess I am expected to clean up. I am her personal aide, though the title often feels more like a glorified babysitter. I smooth down the bodice of the ridiculous, overly elaborate dress she forced me to wear for today’s ceremony, my patience wearing dangerously thin.

Finally, the internal tumblers click. The heavy wooden door gives way and swings open, revealing the dim, heavily shadowed interior of her bedroom.

The very second I cross the threshold, my senses are violently assaulted. A divine, intoxicating scent of crushed eucalyptus and sweet cottonwood hits me like a freight train. It is thick, rich, and utterly flawless. Deep within my soul, my normally quiet and weak inner wolf instantly perks up. She howls in pure, unadulterated joy, a thrilling rush of recognition flooding my veins and making my fingertips tingle. *Mate.* The word echoes in my mind, a sacred promise finally fulfilled. But my human heart immediately stutters in sheer, blinding confusion. Why would my fated mate's scent be pouring out of Tinsley's locked bedroom?

I step further into the dim room, reaching out to flick on the wall switch. The ambient light floods the space, revealing an air that is thick, stifling, and uncomfortably warm. My eyes scan the oversized furniture, only to find Tinsley sitting at the very foot of her massive mattress. She is wrapped in nothing but a stark white sheet pulled tightly around her chest. Her blonde hair is a messy, chaotic tangle, her meticulously applied makeup from last night smeared under her wide, panicked eyes. She stares at me for a fraction of a second before a violent heave wracks her small frame. She suddenly bolts from the bed, the sheet trailing behind her as she scrambles toward the en-suite bathroom to loudly and violently vomit into the porcelain bowl.

The devastating realization of the situation hits me like a physical, crushing blow to the chest before the hidden figure remaining in the room even speaks a single word. My lungs seize. The world tilts on its axis.

“Val…”

The voice is soft. It is overwhelmingly familiar. And it is heavy with a sickening, cowardly regret.

It belongs to Jace.

My breath leaves me in a pathetic, broken wheeze. Jace. My closest companion. My absolute best friend in this miserable pack, and the man I have secretly and desperately loved since we were little children running through the woods. The very man I had closed my eyes and prayed to the Moon Goddess to find as my destined mate today. And I just did. In the most grotesque, heart-wrenching, humiliating way imaginable.

Tears instantly prick the sharp corners of my eyes, a hot and stinging sensation that rapidly blurs my vision as Jace scrambles off the far side of the mattress and rushes toward me. He is completely bare-chested, his hair thoroughly rumpled from sleep. His gentle hands desperately reach out and grab my arm.

The exact moment his warm skin meets mine, the undeniable, telltale sparks of the sacred mate bond zip viciously through my bloodstream. It is electric, addictive, and entirely real. The sparks light up every nerve ending in my body, a cruel, undeniable confirmation from the universe, utterly mocking me. The room suddenly suffocates me. As the initial wave of his eucalyptus scent settles, the underlying stench of the room aggressively forces its way into my nostrils. The heavy, unmistakable odor of stale sweat and intense sex entirely overpowers the crisp cottonwood. The bitter, overly sweet vanilla and cinnamon of Tinsley’s natural scent clings to his skin, making my stomach violently churn.

I try to yank my arm away, but his grip is firm, desperate. My voice trembles, cracking under the immense weight of my shattering reality as I force the pathetic words out: "You slept with Tinsley?"

From the brightly lit bathroom doorway, Tinsley emerges. She leans against the doorframe, her pale, sickly face contrasting sharply with the cruel, malicious glimmer of sheer pleasure dancing wildly in her eyes. She is relishing this. She is feeding on my absolute destruction.

"We didn't know how to tell you," Tinsley openly gloats, not a single ounce of genuine remorse in her tone. She tightly clutches the white sheet around her naked body, a wicked smirk playing on her lips. She boldly brags, her voice dripping with venomous pride, that Jace has been screwing her for months. "We are far more than just casual fuck buddies at this point, Val. Almost three months, to be exact."

Jace’s broad, muscular shoulders completely deflate under the crushing weight of her arrogant confession. He looks like a cornered animal, his chin dropping in absolute defeat. He reaches for me again, his large hands trembling as his eyes go wide and pleading.

"It was just sex, Valerie, I swear it," he begs, his voice cracking with desperation. He tries to pull me closer, attempting to let the addictive mate bond soothe my raging panic. "I want my mate. I truly want you!"

But as he shifts his weight, stepping desperately into the light to reach for my waist, my horrified gaze catches sight of his bare back. Trailing violently down his tanned skin are long, angry pink nail scratches. Deep, fresh, and undeniable.

The bile rises violently in my throat, burning like battery acid. The visual proof of his absolute betrayal is too much to bear. Unable to stand his touch for even a fraction of a second longer, I rip my arm from his grasp and violently shove past Tinsley into the bathroom. I drop heavily to my bare knees on the cold tile floor, leaning over the toilet bowl as I violently vomit up the three cups of morning coffee I had anxiously consumed in anticipation of today. The world spins in chaotic circles around me. I heave until there is nothing left but dry, painful gasps echoing in the pristine, brightly lit bathroom.

Tears stream freely down my cheeks as I shakily reach out for a square of toilet paper from the roll beside the vanity. I wipe my burning lips, intending to toss the wadded paper into the small silver trash can by the sink. But as I open my eyes, my blood turns to absolute, paralyzing ice.

Resting brazenly at the very top of the trash can, entirely unhidden and sitting like a morbid trophy, is a long white plastic stick. A positive pregnancy test. The little blue plus sign glares back at me, screaming its terrible truth into the deafening silence of my mind.

"Tinsley..." I whisper, my voice barely recognizable, shaking with a terror I have never known. I pray, begging any deity listening, that she has been sleeping around. That Jace isn't the only one.

Tinsley steps up behind me, looking down at my pathetic form on the floor. She proudly announces, her tone smug and victorious, that she takes their relationship seriously. She implies Jace is the only male she has been with. Her words act as the final, fatal hammer blow, entirely shattering whatever fragile, pathetic pieces of my world still remained intact. Jace was my light. He was my sanctuary in this pack. Now, he is the source of my absolute ruin.

Barely able to keep my shaking feet beneath me, I use the bathroom counter to haul myself up. I lean heavily against the doorframe, my knees weak, my vision swimming with unshed tears. I stare at the Alpha's daughter, forcing myself to look past the betrayal and focus on the immediate, terrifying reality of the day.

"You are supposed to be getting married today," I whisper, a desperate reminder slipping past my trembling lips. "This isn't just some random Alpha, Tinsley. He is the Lycan King of the Veiled Eclipse pack."

The very title sends a shiver of dread down my spine. The Lycan King is a terrifying, brutal ruler. A literal Alpha of Death. Rumors of his monstrous nature and scarred appearance have kept him isolated and feared by every pack on the continent. I hiss through my teeth, desperately trying to make her understand the gravity of her actions. "What he looks like shouldn't matter! You agreed to this. If you don't get dressed and walk down that aisle right now, a bloody, violent war will consume our entire pack!"

Tinsley merely sneers at my panic. She drops one hand from the sheet, possessively rubbing her flat, bare belly. "No," she growls back, shaking her head defiantly. "The Lycan King will kill me when he finds out I am already pregnant with another man's child. I won't do it." She outright refuses the marriage, her jaw set in stubborn, arrogant finality.

Behind me, Jace breathes a loud, horrified gasp. The reality of the pregnancy finally hitting him. He steps forward and fiercely wraps his strong arms around me from behind, burying his face in my neck. He clings to me like a drowning man to a lifeline, his body trembling against mine. The mate bond screams at me to melt into his embrace, to accept his warmth, but the toxic smell of Tinsley still radiating off his skin makes me want to rip my own skin off.

Tinsley's eyes narrow into dangerous slits as she watches him hold me. She coldly, calculatedly demands that he reject me. Right here. Right now.

"Never," Jace fiercely refuses, tightening his arms around my waist, pressing his chest desperately into my back. "I won't do it."

When Jace refuses, Tinsley's smile turns downright sinister. She places her hands on her hips, her eyes flashing with a dark, unhinged malice. She carelessly shrugs her bare shoulders. "Then I will abort it," she threatens smoothly, the words slicing through the tense air like a silver blade. She tilts her head, her gaze locking onto mine. "I'll get rid of the pup. Then Valerie can live with the constant, agonizing reminder that your baby died solely due to her selfishness. We all know how much you would resent her for it, Jace."

The room goes dead silent. The threat hangs in the air, heavy and lethal.

I know Jace’s heart far too well. We grew up together. I know every secret, every fear, every desperate hope he harbors. Family is absolutely everything to him. He has always wanted pups. Unborn or not, that small life growing inside Tinsley's womb is his child, and he would willingly, without a second of hesitation, die for his pup.

The realization is a booming death knell in my mind.

I feel the exact moment his resolve breaks. His desperate hold around my waist slowly begins to loosen. The warmth of his chest pulls back, leaving my back instantly cold and empty. Stepping away from me, a ragged, agonizing sob breaks violently from his chest. He drops heavily to his bare knees on the carpeted floor right in front of me.

He reaches up, his large hands frantically clutching my cold, shaking hands in his. His eyes are bloodshot, tears streaming openly down his cheeks. He whispers a tearful, desperate plea. "Valerie... please. Please don't hate me."

My inner wolf howls in unbearable, shredding agony. She thrashes wildly against the confines of my mind, begging me to fight, begging me to stop him, but I am completely paralyzed by the sheer weight of the tragedy unfolding.

Jace takes a shuddering breath, looking down at our intertwined fingers, and stutters out the formal, ancient words of rejection.

"I, Jace... reject you, Valerie... as my m-mate."

The words hit me like a physical bullet. An agonizing, tearing sensation rips violently through my chest, severing our fated tie with the brutal force of a rusted saw. The spiritual bond, newly formed and glowing with bright potential just moments ago, violently snaps. It leaves behind a gaping, bleeding crater in my soul.

Gasping desperately for air, my knees buckling under the intense spiritual pain, I stare down at the man I have loved my entire life. I nod my head, a reluctant, forced agreement to the rejection to spare us both the lingering agony of a one-sided bond. I rip my hands from his grasp, entirely unable to look at his weeping face for a second longer.

I spin on my heels and blindly flee out of the bedroom, bursting into the desolate, quiet hallway.

I hear footsteps padding softly against the hardwood behind me. Tinsley follows me out, stopping at the threshold of her bedroom door. Her vicious smirk is firmly in place, her eyes dancing with total victory. She casually leans against the doorframe, tauntingly ordering me to go to the ballroom.

"You need to go inform Lycan King Kravos that I won't be attending," she commands smoothly. I pause, my shoulders shaking as I try to pull air into my burning lungs. I don't even have the energy to argue. Before I can take another step, she tosses out a final, mocking jab. "Oh, and happy birthday, by the way, Val."

Before the full weight of her cruelty can even register, a booming, inescapable voice violently invades my mind.

*— Stall the Lycan King until I can find a replacement. Inform him Tinsley will not be coming. —*

Her father's voice. The Alpha's command echoes violently through my skull, carrying the terrifying, magical weight of his absolute authority. It strips away my free will, physically forcing my exhausted, shaking body to obey without question. My muscles lock, my posture straightens against my own desires, and my feet pivot toward the grand ballroom.

Leaving my utterly shattered, bleeding heart behind in that suffocating hallway, I rush toward my doom. I force my legs to move in record time, navigating the winding corridors of the pack house. I only have a minute to spare before Tinsley is officially expected to walk down the aisle.

As I approach the grand foyer, I forcefully pause before a massive, gilded mirror hanging on the wall. I stare at my reflection. My eyes are red, my face terrifyingly pale, my expression a portrait of absolute devastation.

I violently wipe my tear-stained face with the back of my trembling hands. I cannot fall apart right now. I cannot let the Alpha of Death see me as a weak, pathetic mess. I dig deep into the darkest corners of my soul, gathering every single ounce of my newfound, burning anger and my excruciating, soul-shredding pain. I weave them together to forge a thick, temporary armor around my mind and body. The devastation slowly turns into a forced, numb resolve.

"You can do this, Valerie," I whisper to myself, my voice raspy but steady. It is a desperate vow of strength.

I turn away from the mirror. I step forward, marching directly up to the massive, heavily carved wooden doors of the grand ballroom. I take one last, ragged breath, plant my hands flat against the cool wood, and throw the heavy double doors wide open.
