Out of Hell
The heavy iron doors of the Aurelian Institute swung open with a deafening, metallic groan that vibrated right through the soles of Elara Vaughan’s worn-out shoes. It was the exact moment her two-year sentence of unadulterated torment officially came to an end.
"Number Ten, your two years are up. Your family's here to take you home."
The guard’s cold, mechanical words echoed sharply in the quiet morning air. Elara stood completely still, her eyes fiercely squinting as she took her first hesitant steps past the oppressive gates. The morning sunlight was blinding, almost burning her retinas after spending so many days locked in dim, damp solitary confinement rooms.
This place had been a literal hell on earth. They called it an institute, a disciplinary school for the troubled youth of the ultra-wealthy, but there was nothing educational about it. It was a twisted, sadistic facility designed to destroy a person from the inside out. For two agonizing years, the so-called teachers and her fellow inmates had systematically broken her down through relentless, daily physical and psychological abuse. They starved her, beat her for speaking out of turn, and locked her in the dark until she forgot what the sky looked like.
It was a far cry from the life she was supposed to be living.
Before the nightmare began, Elara had been the undisputed golden girl of the elite Skyreach circle. She had lived a picture-perfect life, sheltered by the immense wealth and power of the Kestner family. Everyone adored her. Her parents pampered her, her older brothers doted on her every move, and her future was laid out on a silver platter.
But everything had shattered violently on her eighteenth birthday.
That was the day a timid, tearful girl named Sienna appeared at the Kestner estate wielding an irrefutable DNA test. The piece of paper proved that Sienna was the true, biological daughter of the wealthy Kestner family, switched at birth by a negligent nurse. In an instant, Elara’s grand birthday party transformed into a tearful, dramatic family reunion that didn't include her.
Initially, her adoptive family had claimed they would keep Elara around. They promised her a place in their home, assuring her that she would simply be Sienna’s new sister. But the dynamic shifted violently and rapidly. Sienna was fragile, constantly playing the victim, and the Kestners were desperate to make up for her eighteen years of supposed hardship. The final nail in Elara’s coffin came when Sienna deliberately threw herself down a flight of stairs and frantically pointed the finger at Elara.
Nobody asked for Elara’s side of the story. Stripped of the prestigious Kestner last name, coldly ordered to take her deceased biological father’s surname, Vaughan, and utterly abandoned by the older brothers who had once sworn to protect her, she was thrown away. They banished her to the Institute to be "disciplined."
Now, stepping into the blinding light of the outside world, Elara’s eyes struggled to adjust. As the blurry shapes in front of her began to sharpen, she saw him.
Waiting for her just a few yards away was Kaelen Kestner.
For eighteen long years, Kaelen had been the boy who fiercely protected her. As her younger brother, he used to shadow her everywhere, ready to fight anyone who dared to make her frown. Now, he was leaning casually against the gleaming, polished hood of his luxury sports car, looking like a stranger.
His demeanor was entirely changed. Kaelen lowered his expensive sunglasses, staring in absolute, unfiltered disbelief at the girl standing before him. His eyes slowly took in her rough, calloused hands with their uneven, chipped nails. He scanned her completely dull, lifeless eyes that held no spark of the fiery sister he remembered. Finally, he looked at her tattered, oversized white dress and the faded gray hoodie draped over her frail shoulders. She looked like a ghost.
Instinctively, Elara dropped her gaze to the gravel beneath her feet. Her shoulders hunched as she took a slow, highly cautious step backward.
The Institute had violently beaten the habit of making eye contact out of her. Looking someone in the eye was considered an act of defiance, a challenge to authority that was always met with severe, bone-bruising punishment. They had punished any display of confidence until looking at the dirt became second nature.
Seeing her cower so pathetically, Kaelen let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the mountain air.
"Wow," Kaelen sneered, his voice dripping with cruel satisfaction. "Looks like this institute actually did its job. They finally managed to make you obedient."
Elara didn't flinch. She just kept her eyes locked on the gravel.
"Honestly, we should have sent you to this place a lot sooner," Kaelen added callously, his tone devoid of any of the warmth they used to share. "If we had, maybe Sienna wouldn't have had to suffer so much from your petty jealousy."
Elara offered absolutely no defense. She remained entirely silent, her head bowed in deep, unyielding submission. Two years ago, she would have screamed at him. She would have defended her innocence until her throat bled. Today, she just stood there, waiting for the verbal blows to end so she could retreat to a corner.
Annoyed by her lack of fiery pushback, Kaelen violently shoved his sunglasses back onto his face.
"Hurry up and get in the car," he barked, slamming his hand against the roof of the sports car. "I have a race to catch, and I’m already running late. Don’t flatter yourself thinking I wanted to be here. I’m only doing this because the kind-hearted Sienna actually felt bad for you and pleaded with me to pick you up."
Elara quietly and carefully moved toward the vehicle. She opened the passenger door without making a sound and slipped into the luxurious leather seat. The smell of expensive cologne and new leather overwhelmed her senses, a sharp contrast to the smell of bleach and dried blood she was used to.
Before she could even reach across her chest to grab her seatbelt, Kaelen maliciously floored the gas pedal.
The powerful engine roared like a trapped beast, and the sports car rocketed forward down the winding mountain road. The sudden force slammed Elara’s frail back against the seat.
Kaelen drove like an absolute maniac. The mountain road was full of treacherous curves and steep drop-offs, but he didn't care. He took the corners at terrifying speeds, the tires constantly on the verge of losing traction. He continuously glared at her from behind his dark sunglasses, his jaw clenched tight.
He was eagerly waiting for her to break. He wanted her to scream in sheer terror. He wanted her to beg him to slow down, to cry, or to scold him and pull rank like she used to in the old days when she was the bossy older sister. His entire goal was to provoke her into acting out so he could eagerly report back to their parents and older brothers that Elara was still the exact same arrogant, out-of-line brat she was two years ago. He needed justification for what they had done to her.
But Elara gave him absolutely nothing.
She merely reached up and gripped the overhead handle. Her knuckles turned stark white from the force of her grip, but that was the only physical reaction she allowed herself. Her pale, gaunt face betrayed not a single ounce of emotion. Her eyes remained locked on the blurring trees outside the window, entirely dead and empty.
Two horrific years of surviving sadistic abusers had fundamentally rewired her brain. She had learned the hard way that predators fed on fear. If she showed them she was scared, they would only hurt her worse. The Institute had taught her how to expertly bury her terror in complete, unyielding silence. Even as the car swerved dangerously close to the edge of the cliff, she just locked her jaw and held her breath.
Infuriated by her stubborn quiet and her absolute refusal to give him the dramatic reaction he so desperately craved, Kaelen’s temper finally boiled over.
"Still playing tough?!" he muttered angrily.
He purposefully and violently slammed both feet down on the brakes.
The brakes locked. The tires screeched deafeningly, burning rubber against the empty, winding mountain asphalt. The sudden, brutal deceleration violently threw Elara forward. Without the restraint of a seatbelt, she had absolutely no way to stop her momentum.
A sickening thud echoed through the leather-clad cabin as Elara’s head crashed brutally against the hard edge of the dashboard.
A wave of dizzying, blinding pain radiated through her skull instantly. White spots exploded across her vision, and a wave of nausea clawed up her throat. She collapsed back into the seat, her hands trembling violently as she instinctively reached up to clutch her throbbing forehead.
Kaelen didn't even blink. He didn't turn his head. He didn't show a single shred of concern at her obvious and immediate injury.
At that exact moment, the Bluetooth system in the car chimed as his phone rang. He calmly pressed a button on the steering wheel to answer the call, completely ignoring the shallow, pained breaths coming from the passenger seat.
"Yeah?" Kaelen answered casually, his voice completely relaxed.
"Mr. Kaelen, the race got moved up. When are you getting here?" a voice echoed through the speakers.
"I'm on my way," Kaelen replied smoothly, casually discussing his schedule as if he hadn't just severely concussed the sister he once loved unconditionally. "I'll be there in twenty."
Hanging up the phone, he finally turned his head to look coldly at the trembling, injured girl beside him.
Without a hint of hesitation or remorse, he issued a harsh, final command: "Get out!"
Elara’s concussed brain struggled to fully register his cruel words. Her vision was swimming, the world spinning in nauseating circles. Before she could even process what was happening, Kaelen leaned over her, reached past her trembling body, and violently shoved the passenger door open.
He grabbed her arm and physically pushed her out of the vehicle.
Elara tumbled out, her knees scraping harshly against the rough gravel of the mountain roadside. She gasped for air as the cold mountain wind hit her face.
"Call a cab yourself," Kaelen spat down at her, his voice devoid of any human empathy.
Without sparing her a single backward glance to see if she was bleeding, Kaelen slammed the passenger door shut. He immediately reved the powerful engine, the deafening roar drowning out the ringing in Elara's ears. The tires kicked up a cloud of dust and small rocks that pelted her skin as he sped off down the highway.
Within seconds, the sleek sports car disappeared around the bend, leaving nothing behind but the faint smell of exhaust.
Elara was left completely isolated, severely injured, and entirely alone on the edge of a desolate mountain road.
