The Confrontation

POV: Lyra

The tires of my beat-up car crunched softly against the gravel as I pulled slowly into the long, winding driveway of the packhouse. My hands gripped the steering wheel, my knuckles entirely white from exhaustion. After an absolutely grueling shift at work, every single muscle in my body violently ached. All I desperately wanted to do was grab my phone, immediately cancel my combat training session with Bria, and entirely ditch our evening plans with our human best friend, Rocco.

A violent, unrelenting stomach bug had been tearing through my system for days. It kept me frantically racing to the toilet, bending over porcelain until there was absolutely nothing left to heave. I felt completely drained, my skin pale and clammy, a constant, dizzying nausea rolling through my gut.

Before I could quietly slip out of the driver's seat and retreat inside to collapse face-first into my bed, a blur of motion caught my eye. My hyperactive little brother, Jace, came rushing across the perfectly manicured lawn. He had his favorite soccer ball tucked tightly under his arm, his eyes wide and practically begging for my attention.

I swallowed back the thick bile rising in my throat and plastered on a fake, exhausted smile. I reluctantly agreed to give him twenty minutes of my time. It was the absolute maximum I could handle before my legs gave out. I carefully kicked off my restrictive work heels, sighing as my bare feet hit the cool grass.

I hadn't even taken two steps toward him when the heavy front door of the packhouse violently burst open, slamming hard against the exterior siding.

"Lyra! My office. Now!" my father bellowed.

His thunderous voice echoed sharply across the yard. The terrifying, unmistakable edge of his Alpha growl instantly shattered Jace's innocent hopes. My little brother froze, the soccer ball slipping from his grasp and bouncing sadly into the grass. My blood ran completely cold.

Dreading the entirely inevitable, brutal confrontation, I gave Jace a weak, apologetic look and slowly headed toward the porch. My stomach was already tying itself into tight, painful knots, the sudden spike of anxiety making my severe nausea ten times worse. Ever since Dad proudly and publicly declared in front of the entire council that I would never be handed the pack simply because I am a woman, I had actively and desperately avoided him at absolutely all costs. I dodged every possible interaction, sticking to the shadows of our own home just to preserve my sanity.

I stepped inside the suffocatingly dark, wood-paneled office. The air in the room felt incredibly thick, practically vibrating with his barely contained rage. He sat rigidly behind his enormous, polished oak desk, his massive arms tightly folded across his chest. Without uttering a single word, he aggressively slid a cracked cell phone across the smooth wooden surface. My missing phone.

"Where did you find it?" I cautiously asked, taking a hesitant step forward. A brief wave of genuine relief washed over me; I had been frantically tearing my room apart looking for it all morning.

"Doesn’t matter," he viciously snarled, leaning forward so abruptly his heavy leather chair groaned in protest. "What I absolutely want to know is why Alpha Kaelen is personally calling you."

My heart dropped entirely into my stomach. The floor beneath my feet felt like it was suddenly tilting.

Before I could even formulate a defense, his incredibly oppressive, suffocating Alpha aura aggressively washed over me. The sheer, magical force of it hit me like a physical blow, forcing me to fiercely fight the innate, biological urge to drop to my bare knees and submit to him. He forcefully leaned in over the desk, his gaze boring into my skull.

"He openly claims you are his fated mate. Is that true?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a lethal, rumbling pitch.

Gritting my teeth violently against his heavy command, I fiercely glared back into his glowing, furious eyes. I refused to let him see me tremble. "Yes, he absolutely is. He was probably calling because I formally and entirely rejected him."

My father loudly exhaled. A highly visible, profound relief washed over his hardened features, and he instantly dropped his crushing aura from the room. The sudden release of pressure left me gasping for air, but his brief moment of relief quickly and violently morphed right back into terrifying anger.

"Where did you meet him?" he ruthlessly interrogated, his eyes narrowing to dangerous slits. "I have never taken you to any of his territory functions."

Entirely trapped by my own careless lies, I swallowed hard. "I... I briefly saw Kaelen at a nightclub in the city."

"When?" he snapped.

"On the exact night of the mandatory pack meeting," I reluctantly admitted.

His jaw locked. I had purposefully skipped that highly important meeting, specifically because I was utterly furious at his blatant, sexist decision regarding my birthright.

"Women are absolutely not Alphas," he stated with a cold, mocking finality, effectively dismissing my entire existence and years of relentless training in five agonizing words.

"My blood entirely says otherwise," I sharply snapped back, entirely refusing to back down from his blatant disrespect.

His eyes suddenly glowed a fluorescent, toxic yellow with unbridled rage. He slammed his thick hand down on the oak desk. "You absolutely do not leave this pack territory again! You’re completely grounded until I specifically say otherwise. I absolutely will not have you gallivanting around the city like some cheap whore, making our esteemed pack look bad!"

I stared at him in sheer, paralyzing disbelief. The air punched out of my lungs. My own inner wolf, Zyla, had been completely giving me the silent treatment for three agonizing weeks. She was totally refusing to let me physically shift, locking me out of our bond because I had fiercely rejected our fated mate solely for the sake of this twisted, broken family. And this man—my own flesh and blood—dared to look me in the eye and call me a whore?

"Wow, really, Dad? A whore?" I screamed furiously, the sheer volume of my voice tearing at my raw throat. Hot tears of absolute betrayal violently pricked my eyes. "I have done absolutely everything you ever asked of me. Everything! I sacrificed my mate for this pack!"

"Watch your tone!" he roared.

"I am twenty years old! I won't tolerate you treating me like a fucking child anymore!" I yelled back, my chest heaving, the sickening churn in my stomach completely forgotten under the sheer weight of my fury.

"You know exactly where the damn door is," he cruelly sneers, pointing a thick, calloused finger toward the exit. "If you want to go, go. But if you remain under my roof, it will be strictly on my absolute terms. Now, get out of my sight before I make you."

The tears furiously pricked my eyes, threatening to spill over my hot cheeks, but I aggressively clamped my mouth shut. I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me cry. Turning on my heel, I marched out of the dark office, deeply and fundamentally realizing I was completely done trying to ever please this vile man. He would never see me as anything more than a pawn or a liability.

I made it halfway down the long, carpeted hall when my stomach violently churned with a sudden, overwhelming sickness. The adrenaline crashed, leaving me hollow. My fast, angry walk rapidly broke into a desperate, frantic run.

I burst through the bathroom door, violently dropping to my bare knees on the cold tile. I gripped the edges of the toilet bowl and violently threw up the meager, acidic contents of my stomach again. My throat burned, and my entire body shook with awful, uncontrollable tremors.

Hauling myself weakly to my trembling feet, I turned on the faucet and rinsed the vile taste from my mouth. I blankly stared at my pale, incredibly sweaty, hollow reflection in the glass mirror. I looked like a ghost haunting my own life. My hair clung to my damp forehead in stringy, pathetic messes.

With a pained, exhausted groan, I slowly began peeling off my soiled work clothes, dropping them carelessly onto the cold tile. I needed to clean myself up in the shower immediately. The absolute last thing I ever needed right now was to leave a mess and give Dad any more ridiculous, petty reasons to be angry and abusive toward me. I had to survive his roof tonight, but something inside me had permanently shattered.
