The Balcony Stranger

POV: Lyra.

The deafening, rhythmic thumping of the bass from the club's colossal speakers vibrates straight through the sticky floorboards and deep into my bones. It perfectly matches the erratic, alcohol-fueled buzzing rushing through my veins. I am swaying carelessly against my best friend, Bria, entirely losing myself in the crush of the sweaty, writhing crowd on the packed dance floor. Tonight, I am dressed to kill in a scandalous, figure-hugging outfit that clings to every curve and leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. I am entirely determined to let the heavy liquor dull my suffocating pain and completely fuel my blatant rebellion.

For my entire life, I have dedicated every waking hour, every drop of sweat, and every ounce of my willpower to being the perfect daughter. I trained endlessly in close combat, pack strategy, and fierce leadership to one day take over our pack. I did everything my father ever asked of me without a single complaint. But today, my father dropped a devastating bombshell that completely shattered my reality. He flat-out refused to pass the pack down to me.

The harsh, biting memory of his cruel words echoes relentlessly in my mind: *'You’re a woman, not an Alpha.'*

He looked me dead in the eyes in his office and made it painfully clear that he fully intends to hold off his retirement. He plans to keep a tight, suffocating grip on his power until my ten-year-old brother, Jace, comes of age. Ten years old. My little brother can barely shift, let alone lead an entire territory, yet my father deems him more worthy simply because he is male. It is an utter insult to my lifelong dedication.

Furious at his blatant misogyny, I intentionally boycotted tonight's highly mandatory pack meeting. I purposefully escaped into the neon-lit chaos of the city club, practically guaranteeing I would provoke his fiery wrath. Let him struggle with the supernatural council and the pack entirely without me to organize his presentations or manage his schedules. I want him to feel exactly how angry I am. I want to embarrass him.

Despite the heavy fog of liquor deliberately clouding my mind, an incredibly odd, prickling sensation suddenly washes over my heated skin. I feel like I am being intensely watched. Instinctively, I scan the dense throngs of moving bodies. My gaze drifts upward over the strobe-lit chaos until it abruptly lands on the VIP balcony above.

A broad-shouldered man with striking, luminescent silver eyes is casually leaning against the glass railing. He is staring directly at me with a predatory intensity that pierces right through the crowded room and straight into my chest. He slowly takes a measured sip of his amber drink, his gaze never leaving mine for even a fraction of a second. Then, he smoothly melts back into the thick, concealing shadows of the VIP section.

But a strange, magnetic sensation violently tugs deep inside my chest. It feels like an invisible tether is pulling right at my soul, leaving me inexplicably nervous, breathless, and hyper-aware of every inch of my body.

"Are you alright, babe?" Bria drunkenly checks on me, shouting directly into my ear over the overwhelmingly loud music. She brushes her lavender hair out of her face, bringing me crashing back to reality.

I nod quickly, forcing myself to try and shake off the incredibly strange, lingering encounter. I focus back on her, throwing my hands up to the beat, but my eyes keep betraying me, darting back to the empty balcony.

An hour later, my feet are painfully aching from my towering heels. I tap Bria’s bare shoulder, shouting over the DJ's heavy remix to tell her I desperately need another drink at the bar. She gives me a thumbs-up and immediately turns to grind against another dancer in the crowd.

But the exact moment I turn around to forcefully weave my way through the suffocating crush of dancing people, I slam directly into a rock-hard, muscular chest.

Strong, unyielding hands instantly shoot out. They grip my bare hips with a possessive, crushing tightness. A wildly heady, intoxicating scent of pine and dark musk violently invades my senses. It causes my entire body to lock up and tense with an unnatural, burning heat that flares straight to my core.

"Found you, little mate," a deep, impossibly dark voice purrs directly against the sensitive skin of my neck. The deep timbre of his voice sends violent shivers cascading down my spine.

I swallow hard, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs like a trapped bird. I pull back just enough to see who is holding me, only to immediately lock eyes with the mesmerizing stranger from the balcony. Only down here, under the flashing neon lights, a cold spike of pure panic violently flares in my chest.

I instantly recognize his striking, ruthless features. This isn't just some handsome stranger. This is Alpha Kaelen of the Duskfire pack.

He is a famously ruthless monster and my father's absolute greatest enemy. He is the vicious tyrant who swept into our previously peaceful city and violently divided the local packs with his cunning lies. He forced packs into sanctioned sections because they could suddenly no longer get along, bringing a reign of fear to the streets. Right now, he is actively playing a filthy, dirty political game, trying for months to get my father officially kicked off the supernatural council so he can seize total, unquestioned control over the entire territory.

My treacherous, primal wolf, Zyla, aggressively pushes forward to the surface of my mind. She is absolutely thrilled, practically purring and scratching to finally meet our fated mate. She completely ignores the absolute political disaster he represents. She wants to submit to his overwhelming alpha aura right here on the sticky dance floor.

But hot tears of pure outrage fiercely prick the corners of my eyes. My father will literally kill me with his bare hands if he finds out my soul is irrevocably tied to the exact man who nearly cost him our entire pack. Of all the wolves in the world, it had to be the absolute worst asshole imaginable tearing my family apart.

"Don’t touch me!" I violently snap, my voice trembling with raw rage as I forcefully try to step away from his magnetic heat.

A dark, incredibly dangerous amusement flashes brightly across his handsome face. He doesn't let go. His hands remain securely clamped on my hips as he leisurely glances around the crowded, oblivious club.

"Now, don’t be like that," he murmurs, leaning closer so his warm breath ghosts over my skin. His silver eyes flash with a dark, possessive threat. "You don’t want to piss me off, not when everyone is having so much fun."
