The Divorce Agreement

The morning light pierced through the small gap in the heavy velvet drapes, dragging Clara out of the suffocating darkness of a completely sleepless night. She sat up slowly on the edge of the mattress, her limbs feeling as though they were filled with lead. On her nightstand, her laptop screen suddenly lit up with a soft chime. Blinking away the gritty exhaustion burning in her eyes, Clara reached for the device and opened her inbox.

Her breath caught in her throat. Her portfolio had been officially accepted. The prestigious Javarra Academy of Arts had formally offered her a place.

For a rare, fleeting moment, a spark of pure, unadulterated joy bloomed in Clara's chest. It was a massive personal triumph, a quiet victory she had been desperately hoping for in a life that had felt utterly stagnant for so long. But the warmth of that small happiness evaporated almost instantly. Her gaze drifted from the glowing laptop screen back to the sleek mobile phone resting just inches away on the crumpled sheets.

The screen was dark now, but the images from last night were forever seared into her retinas. The agonizing memory of the media photos—showcasing Sebastian’s gentle, unguarded smile directed entirely at Selena—crashed back over her like a tidal wave of ice. It was a look of pure adoration he had never once given her in their entire marriage.

That single, agonizing memory completely cemented her resolve. The lingering hesitation was gone.

With a steady hand that surprised even herself, Clara picked up her phone and dialed the number of her best friend and lawyer. She didn't bother with pleasantries when the call connected.

"Maya, I need you to draft up a divorce agreement for me," Clara instructed, her voice completely devoid of any hesitation or doubt.

"Clara..." Maya’s voice carried a heavy mix of shock and sympathetic understanding through the speaker. "Are you really sure?"

"I'm sure," Clara said softly, though a ghostly pang echoed in her chest. Ending this marriage was no small thing. She was the one who had practically begged her powerful family to arrange this union in the first place, putting everything on the line for a man who never wanted her. But she knew there was absolutely no turning back now. "Once you finish drafting the agreement, I need you to rush the paperwork. Send it to me as soon as humanly possible."

She ended the call and let out a long, shaky breath, mentally bracing herself for the inevitable, explosive fallout that would soon come from the powerful Valerius family. They would furious, but she was done playing the fool.

Exactly one week later, Clara stepped through the towering glass doors of Varkas Corporation for the very first—and likely the very last—time. Her heels clicked sharply against the polished marble floors as she walked confidently past the rows of staring employees. Whispers broke out behind the reception desks. None of them recognized her as the CEO's wife, a testament to just how entirely hidden Sebastian had kept their marriage.

Clara ignored the piercing stares and pushed her way directly into Sebastian’s sleek, imposing corner office.

Sebastian was seated behind his massive mahogany desk, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. He didn't even afford her the basic dignity of looking up when the heavy door swung shut.

Without a single unnecessary word, Clara walked right up to the center of his desk and dropped the freshly printed, binding legal documents right onto the polished wood.

"Let's get divorced," she stated. Her tone was completely resolute, stripped of any past desperation, tears, or pleading.

Sebastian paused, his pen hovering over a corporate file. He flipped through his own paperwork, his dismissal cold and absolute. "Clara, mind games like this won't work on me," he rebuked, assuming this was just another pathetic, attention-seeking ploy. "And stop trying to hold Grandma's illness over my head."

Ignoring his icy condescension entirely, Clara didn't argue. She simply leaned over, picked up a silver pen from his desk set, and swiftly, fluidly signed her name on the dotted line of the divorce agreement.

"She's back—the Mrs. Varkas everyone thinks she should be," Clara declared with a cool, detached finality, tossing the pen aside. "I'm just the stand-in."

Sebastian finally stopped reading his files. His dark eyes flicked up to meet hers, his jaw clenching in sudden irritation. "Do you even know what you're saying?"

"I know exactly what I'm saying. But since we're finally laying everything out, let's talk about Valerius Holdings," Clara said, refusing to leave quietly. She stood tall, directly confronting him. "Valerius Holdings is our family legacy. We've weathered storms for decades without a single issue. But suddenly, we're hit with a highly suspicious, crippling tax audit out of nowhere. A financial crisis that conveniently aligns perfectly with Selena’s return to Jentis."

She stared down at him, her eyes sharp. "I know you're targeting my family to avenge her."

Sebastian’s demeanor instantly darkens. The mere mention of Selena's name in a negative light was enough to trigger his fierce, unquestioning defense. He stood up, towering over the desk.

"This whole mess isn't on Selena," Sebastian shot back aggressively, his voice dripping with venom. "Your uncle botched the figures, and Selena only reported what actually happened. She's not at fault for your uncle's severe financial fraud."

He leaned closer, sneering viciously. "But I can't blame you for suspecting her. After all, you were the one who ruthlessly snatched her rightful marriage away in the first place through your family's manipulation. You brought this on yourself."

Finding his blinded defense of his lover almost laughable, Clara felt a bitter smile tug at her lips. He truly believed Selena was a saint. There was no point in arguing with a man who refused to see the truth.

"Just sign the papers, Sebastian," Clara said quietly. She left the fully signed documents resting squarely on his desk, turned on her heel, and walked out without another word.

The tension in the corporate building did not end there.

Clara made her way down the plushly carpeted hallway. While waiting by the gleaming metal doors of the private elevator, a familiar scent of overly sweet perfume hit the air. Clara turned to see Selena herself walking out from an adjacent VIP lounge.

The moment they made eye contact, Selena immediately dropped her public facade of sweet innocence. A smug, victorious smirk twisted her pretty features as she strutted up to Clara.

"Fancy seeing you here," Selena gloated openly, her tone oozing with unearned superiority. "I told you, Clara, I should have always been the true Mrs. Varkas. Your family just swooped in while I was away. I waited way too long to take back what's mine."

Clara met her gloating not with the tears or devastation Selena clearly wanted, but with a sharp, sarcastic smile.

"You know, Selena, your family could've put money into Varkas Corporation just like we did," Clara challenged, her words dripping with absolute scorn. "But when Sebastian hit rock bottom, you chose to take off and study abroad. Now that Varkas Corporation's thriving again, you just show up thinking you can cash in?"

Selena’s face flushed a dark, furious red. The truth hit a nerve. "Don't twist the facts! If I hadn't left, you never would've gotten the chance to worm your way into his life. But it doesn't matter anyway. Sebastian flew all the way to Monara to see me the very day after your wedding. He never cared about you."

Unfazed and perfectly composed, Clara arched a perfectly groomed eyebrow.

"So you're straight up admitting Sebastian cheated on me in our marriage," Clara said, her voice echoing clearly in the quiet hallway. "And you're the homewrecker who crawled between us—the textbook side-piece, right?"

"You—" Flustered by the brutal, unvarnished truth, Selena’s eyes widened. She hadn't expected Clara to be this calm, this completely devoid of jealousy.

Suddenly, Selena’s eyes darted down the hall. She spotted a familiar, tall figure rapidly approaching from the direction of the CEO's office.

Instantly, tears began streaming down Selena's face like a perfectly rehearsed performance. The smugness vanished, replaced by an expression of terrified distress. She lunged forward, aggressively grabbing Clara's wrist.

"Mrs. Varkas, please!" Selena wailed loudly, adopting the high-pitched, trembling voice of a victim. "I swear there's nothing going on! The photos and the trending rumors aren't true! Please just hear me out!"

Revolted by the sudden, physical contact from the woman who was sleeping with her husband, Clara instinctively shoved the woman's hands away.

"What's wrong with you, Selena? Just let me go," Clara hisses, her skin crawling.

As Clara attempted to peel her fingers back and step away, Selena deliberately and dramatically tumbled forward, throwing her entire body weight toward the hard marble floor with a pathetic gasp.

Before Clara’s mind could even process the orchestrated act, Sebastian stepped up forcefully behind them. Seeing the woman he loved falling, his protective instincts flared into blind rage. He swiftly reached out to steady a sobbing Selena, wrapping an arm around her waist. Without missing a beat, he firmly, aggressively shoved Clara away in retaliation.

Thrown completely off balance by the sheer force of her husband's anger, Clara’s feet tangled. She twisted her ankle violently. The world spun in a blur of gray and silver as she crashed backward, slamming hard against the unforgiving metal elevator doors.

A heavy *thud* echoed in the corridor.

A massive jolt of physical pain shot directly up Clara's spine. But before she could even process the impact to her back, an instant, sudden, sickening ache flared deep in her abdomen. It was a sharp, pulling cramp that felt fundamentally wrong.

Slick with a sudden sheen of cold sweat, Clara slid down the metal doors slightly. She instinctively clutched her stomach, her heart hammering against her ribs in sheer, paralyzing terror for her unborn child. The pain was radiating, pulsing with a terrifying intensity.

Catching sight of her sudden, genuine physical distress, an odd, unreadable look flickers rapidly in Sebastian's dark eyes. The anger vanished for a fraction of a second, replaced by confusion. He gently handed Selena off to the side and leaned in quickly, extending a large hand toward Clara to help steady her.

But as his hand neared her shoulder, Clara snapped her head up. Her eyes blazed with pure, unadulterated hatred, locking onto the man who had just risked destroying the only piece of family she had left.

"Don't touch me," Clara hisses, her voice trembling with raw venom and agonizing pain. "Keep your fake sympathy to yourself."
