The Scent of Fate
(Alpha Vandrak)
Arakon, my inner wolf, was growing increasingly, violently restless with every passing day. The relentless pacing in my mind was driving me to the brink of insanity. Despite systematically searching through allied packs for hundreds of miles surrounding the city of Aethel-Polis, we still hadn’t managed to find our destined mate. I was beginning to think she didn't exist or wasn't in this damn country. But I was fiercely determined to find her, assuming the Moon Goddess hadn't completely forgotten me.
If I weren’t constrained by my titles as an Alpha and a Prince—a man heavily burdened with endless, crushing pack duties—I would have made hunting her down my absolute, sole mission in life. Absolutely nothing else could bring me the profound psychological and physical release I so desperately needed. Sex was completely losing its appeal; no matter the partner, I just couldn’t find the release I had been ravenously looking for. I scrubbed my hand over my face, aggressively hoping the rough friction would push away those grim, dark thoughts.
"Mr. Vandrak," my secretary's crisp voice buzzed through the intercom. Fucking perfect.
"What?" I snapped.
"Mr. Daxen is requesting a meeting. He's following up on a message he sent."
"Now?" I asked.
"Yes, your schedule is clear for the next hour," she replied. I let out a heavy sigh. "Mr. Vandrak?"
"Send him in." I sat forward, sharply adjusting my tie, forcibly reigning in my feral beast.
The heavy doors clicked open, and Mr. Daxen stepped in. He stood stiffly before my imposing mahogany desk, and I gestured for him to sit. "Mr. Vandrak, I won’t take much of your time. The woman that you wanted us to keep track of in our system, she just appeared."
I sat forward instantly, the deep weariness erasing from my body. He had my absolute, undivided, predatory attention.
"It seems that she rented an apartment that we own in the Lower West Side," Daxen stated, reaching out and sliding a standard lease agreement directly across the desk.
My absolute, predatory focus locked entirely onto the ink. I snatched the paper up almost too fast. Written clearly on the dotted line was Elaraminta Balfour's name.
For five agonizing years, I had kept her name circulating in our surveillance systems. Five years of absolute silence. And now, she was finally here.
"Anything else?" I asked, my voice dropping low, not even looking at him.
"That’s all for now; it just came in. I’ll keep you posted if she appears in our system again." He stood up to leave.
"Keep me posted on her every move," I strictly ordered, giving him a sharp nod to dismiss him.
As Daxen quickly exited the room, a profound shift occurred. My wolf, Arakon, finally, miraculously settled calmly in my mind for the first time in five agonizing years.
(Elara)
I was finally beginning to settle into a new, predictable rhythm. The chaotic, exhausting busyness of my days in this new city left me very little free time to dwell on my lingering, negative memories. Being constantly on my feet meant I couldn't spiral into the dark thoughts that still circled me.
My early mornings strictly consisted of dropping my son, Evren, at my friend Kae's apartment. There, their beloved, trusted nanny, Solyra, watched him right alongside Kae's young daughter, Liora, before Kae and I would walk together to work. The toddlers got along wonderfully, and Evren didn't treat her like a baby.
My parents were still currently staying with me, diligently helping me build our new life before they eventually returned to their home pack. Having them here was a massive blessing, but the reality of our financial limitations constantly gnawed at my conscience.
"We’re going to see a kitchen table and chair set and a permanent kid's bed for Evren today," my mom casually mentioned over morning coffee. She handed me a steaming mug while my dad helped Evren get dressed in the corner. I would miss this hands-on help more than words could say.
"Let me know how much. I’ll pay for it or pay you back," I said, taking a long sip, mentally begging the caffeine to wake my exhausted body up. I felt physically and mentally drained after each shift, and it was hard to shake the tiredness until the rush of work started.
"Don’t worry about it," my mom smiled softly. "We can figure it out later."
"Mom, seriously," I insisted, setting the mug down hard on the kitchen counter, my voice laced with sharp guilt. I knew full well they were deeply dipping into their heavily limited pack savings to support us. "You know I appreciate all your help, but you’ve already paid for the deposit on this place and the first month's rent, new mattresses, and all that. I’ve got the rest."
"Okay, I’ll let you know," she nodded, but I absolutely wasn’t convinced. The urge to be entirely, financially independent burned fiercely in my chest.
After saying goodbye, I took Evren’s small hand in mine. As we walked, I noticed his shorts were coming up over his knees, and I added new summer clothes to my never-ending mental list of things to buy.
"What do you think you’re going to do today with Liora and Solyra?" I asked him. Solyra was such a maternal figure that Evren and I had fallen in love with her immediately. I trusted her completely with the kids.
"I think maybe the park!" he shouted excitedly. "The big one with all the black fences around it."
"Well, that just sounds like the best day ever. I can’t wait to hear all about it."
He talked almost non-stop until we reached Kae’s apartment and she buzzed us up. Her place was smaller than ours but in a nicer area with a playground just minutes away.
After successfully leaving Evren in good hands, Kae and I headed out onto the busy city streets.
"Let’s do the damn thing," Kae sighed, closing the heavy door behind her with a wry, sarcastic smile. "Guess what?" She raised a perfectly arched eyebrow. With her, it could literally be anything.
"What?" I asked, bracing myself.
"You’re officially out of training. Welcome to the team, Elara."
"It’s all I’ve ever wanted," I replied dryly, heavily matching her sarcasm as we headed down the stairs. She laughed loudly. Internally, however, I was genuinely thrilled to finally start making my own real tips. I felt guilty taking the cuts Kae generously shared with me, but I needed the money desperately. There was absolutely no room for pride.
At the bustling diner, the chaotic breakfast rush was in full swing. I confidently donned my notoriously ugly pink apron and manned the front counter. It was an easier section for my first official day off training, not requiring as much frantic running.
I went to work immediately, checking the coffee pots and brewing fresh, steaming batches. The familiar jingle of the front door bell barely pulled my attention anymore; it was just white noise. But then, without a single warning, the very air inside the room abruptly, violently shifted.
It wasn't a subtle change. The constant, low background chatter died completely. The clinking of silverware and the sizzling of the grill vanished into thin air. It was as if the customers in their booths and the servers buzzing around had entirely frozen in place, subdued by an invisible, crushing weight. I couldn't draw a breath.
A loud beep from the coffee machine briefly pulled me from my stunned thoughts, but as I stood close to the slow-filling pots, a distinct scent violently hit my nose.
It bypassed my human senses entirely. It was sweet yet intensely woody—a completely perfect, intoxicating combination of heavy, manly musk and soft, rain-soaked earth. It flared through my nostrils, setting my blood completely on fire. Every single fiber of my being violently snapped to high alert. The physical exhaustion dragging down my limbs evaporated instantly, replaced by an explosive surge of primal adrenaline. My body finally woke up, but it wasn't the caffeine.
I turned sharply on my heel, confused for a split second as my buried supernatural senses violently awakened. My body moved purely on ancient instinct. My gaze immediately, instinctively locked onto a tall, imposing figure standing in the doorway.
My eyes clashed with a pair of icy, churning light blue eyes.
For years, my inner wolf, Isra, had been a silent, shattered ghost. She had been dormant and broken, leaving me as nothing more than a human. But in that exact fraction of a second, as those icy blue eyes bore into mine, Isra suddenly, violently resurrected.
She danced wildly in my mind, her presence overwhelming, vibrating with a frantic energy. She clawed at the walls of my consciousness, her powerful voice screaming something I thought I would absolutely never hear again.
*Mate!*
