The Perfect Performance

My heart froze in my chest at the sight of Sloane standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with shock at the Vandermere name. I braced myself for the inevitable interrogation, my pulse hammering against my ribs. Sloane’s perfectly contoured face twisted, her mouth opening to undoubtedly strip me bare and humiliate me right there in the anteroom. But to my immense relief, before she could even utter another demanding syllable, a frantic wedding planner suddenly appeared, whisking the bride away for the final preparations in a whirlwind of panicked instructions.

I let out a shaky breath, feeling like I had just dodged a speeding bullet, and immediately spun back to face Gideon. I zeroed in on his fabricated backstory, my eyes narrowing in sheer disbelief.

"Where the hell did you pull the surname 'Vandermere' from?" I demanded in a hushed, urgent hiss.

He didn't answer with words. He simply lifted a large arm and pointed smoothly toward a passing waiter balancing a silver tray. My eyes followed his gaze directly to a vintage wine bottle resting in the center. Gideon smoothly plucked two crystal glasses from the tray, handing one to me. I stared down at the bold, elegant label stamped across the dark glass: *Vandermere*.

"Smart," I noted, genuinely impressed by the gigolo's ridiculously quick thinking under pressure. "But do you actually know anything about wine?"

Instead of backing down, he stepped right into my personal space. The air between us instantly thickened. He leaned in dangerously close, the movement fluid and predatory, until the intoxicating, musky scent of his expensive cologne enveloped me completely. A mischievous, utterly confident smile played on his sculpted lips.

"I know that wine is like people," he murmured, his voice a low, vibrating hum. "The best ones have to be savored slowly. First, you take in the aroma..." His dark, intense gaze dropped deliberately to my lips, lingering there for a heart-stopping second. "Then you taste just a little... and only then do you savor every sip."

The sheer magnetism of his voice sent a sudden, traitorous shiver racing down my spine. I didn't even have a second to process the heavy, simmering tension between us because the heavy double doors of the ballroom opened wide, and the ushers began efficiently herding the guests toward the chapel.

The wedding ceremony itself was a certified psychological nightmare. I sat rigidly in the polished wooden pew, my posture stiff enough to snap. I was clutching Gideon’s large, warm hand so tightly that my knuckles had turned a stark white, and the joints in my fingers physically ached from the immense pressure.

Up at the altar stood Sloane and Chase. Watching them exchange their vows felt exactly like glass grinding heavily in my chest. Every recycled, hollow promise of eternal devotion that left Chase's mouth felt like a direct, stinging slap to my face. It was a cruel echo of the exact words he had once whispered to me.

"If you keep squeezing like that, sweetheart, I'm going to lose circulation," Gideon whispered, leaning down so closely that his warm breath playfully tickled the sensitive shell of my ear.

I loosened my death grip slightly, swallowing the massive lump in my throat.

"I could fake a dramatic fainting spell right now," he offered in a low, conspiratorial murmur. "Or, if you prefer, I could conveniently spill red wine all over the bride's pristine white dress. Just say the word, and your misery ends."

Despite the crushing weight in my chest, a tiny, genuine smile actually broke through my pain at his utterly ridiculous, deadpan offer.

The lavish, over-the-top reception that followed was a sickening display of wealth, and I couldn't hide forever. Sloane finally managed to corner me near an absurdly massive champagne tower. She was wearing a mask of sickening sweetness, her perfectly glossed lips stretched into a terrifying smile.

"Tessa! I'm just so thrilled you came," she announced loudly, making sure the surrounding elite guests could hear her performative grace. "It honestly means everything to me that we could move past all the... drama."

Chase stood beside her. His gaze swept up and down my body, visibly noting that I looked entirely different. It was glaringly obvious that he was disappointed. He had expected me to show up as a broken, pathetic, weeping mess. Instead, I stood there looking radiant, whole, and completely unbothered.

Sloane quickly realized her husband was staring and immediately turned her laser-focused attention to my companion. She smugly sized up Gideon, her eyes narrowing as they raked over his expensive suit.

"So," Sloane purred, dripping with blatant condescension. "Is this just a casual new date? You certainly moved on fast."

Gideon didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. He slid a firm, wildly possessive hand around my waist, pulling my back flush against the solid, hard wall of his chest.

"Fiancé," Gideon corrected smoothly, his voice a low, commanding rumble that demanded absolute authority. His piercing, dark gaze locked in a dead, unyielding stare with hers. "Funny you'd say that, Sloane. Seems like Tessa's not the one still living in the past."

Sloane's smug expression cracked. Before she could retort, her snobby circle of friends swooped in, clearly eager to test this mysterious newcomer.

"Vandermere?" one of them challenged sharply. "That's strange. I haven't heard of a single Vandermere living in the local area."

Gideon effortlessly parried the verbal strike, his composure maddeningly perfect. "That's because my primary focus is on international investments, rather than managing the famous vineyards. I rarely have time for the local social circuits."

Then, without missing a single beat, Gideon casually turned his attention to my cheating ex. He went straight for the absolute kill.

"By the way, Chase," Gideon drawled, his tone conversational but dripping with lethal intent. "How's that project at the Onyx Wharf going? I heard you're having trouble with the environmental permits."

Chase went deathly pale in an instant, his jaw dropping in stunned, horrified silence. He was completely blindsided by Gideon's highly classified inside knowledge.

Furious that the spotlight had shifted, Sloane desperately tried to regain control by belittling me with feigned, toxic pity.

"Well, it's just so surprising," Sloane sighed heavily, looking between me and Gideon as if we were a tragic mismatch. "You two are clearly from completely different worlds. Honestly, Tessa, I never, ever expected you to be able to move on from Chase."

Gideon smiled slowly, a sharp, incredibly dangerous glint flashing in his dark eyes. He tightened his grip on my waist, pulling me even closer against his side, presenting a united front.

"Or maybe," Gideon countered, his voice dripping with icy velvet, "you just never knew her true worth."

Sensing my fraying composure under the crushing weight of their toxic stares, Gideon expertly guided me away and led me to the center of the dimly lit dance floor.

As we swayed perfectly in time to the slow, melodic music, I could feel Sloane glaring actual daggers at us from across the ballroom. The protective bubble Gideon had built around me started to crack, and my bitter insecurities finally bled out.

I looked up at his devastatingly handsome face and confessed the pathetic, embarrassing truth.

"I'm just a retail dress saleswoman," I whispered, my voice trembling with heavy self-deprecation. "Meanwhile, Sloane is living my exact dream life, with the man I genuinely thought I was going to marry."

Gideon met my tear-filled gaze without a single ounce of pity in his eyes. There was only raw, unapologetic honesty.

"If the life you dreamed of was being a snake married to a cheating idiot, then you seriously need to rethink your goals."

His blunt, unapologetic delivery pulled a sudden, reluctant laugh from my chest, cutting through the thick layer of misery. He stared deeply into my eyes, stripping away all my carefully constructed defenses. He saw right through the tough, unbreakable-woman act I had been desperately trying to maintain.

"You didn't deserve to go through that," he murmured softly. His thumb began gently stroking the curve of my waist, sending a rush of warmth through my trembling body.

Unable to bear the suffocating charade of the reception any longer, I leaned into him and whispered that I wanted to leave.

Gideon didn't question it. His eyes darkened as his voice dropped an entire octave, sending a fresh shiver straight to my core.

"I've got a suite reserved here at the hotel," he offered, the simmering romantic tension between us thickening the air. "If you want to keep making your investment worthwhile... we can leave this boring party and actually have some fun."

"I'd like that," I said, looking up at him without a single moment of hesitation.
