Leda’s Discovery

Sienna's POV

The heavy, pale blue fabric of the bridesmaid dress clung to my skin, cold, restrictive, and entirely too tight. I stood in front of the massive, gleaming boutique mirror, smoothing down the heavy fabric, but the reflection staring back at me looked like a complete stranger. Under the bright, golden glow of the crystal chandeliers, the pastel gown felt like a costume I was being forced to wear. A familiar, sickening discomfort twisted tightly in my stomach, making it hard to draw a full breath.

"Sienna, you look… decent," my mother, Elena, said.

Her voice was completely flat, devoid of any genuine interest. She barely spared me a passing glance before immediately turning her attention back to my sister, Camilla. Camilla was practically glowing, happily twirling in a cloud of blush pink tulle that caught the light with every movement.

"Oh, my sweet girl, you look absolutely stunning! Truly magnificent!" Elena beamed, her hands fluttering to adjust a stray lock of Camilla's curled hair with doting care.

I swallowed the sharp, familiar sting of being completely ignored and cast aside. It was always the same story—Camilla was the golden child, while I was just background noise. Even with the blue and white wedding theme, Camilla was allowed to wear whatever she pleased, completely disregarding the rules. I watched her giggle and pose in the reflection, the contrast between us wider than ever.

Near the boutique doorway, my future stepfather, Vittorio, stood with his arms crossed tightly over his chest, watching the entire display. His lingering, oily gaze moved slowly over my body, tracing the curves and making my skin crawl with intense discomfort. He didn't even try to hide his scrutiny, his eyes burning into me in a way that made me feel dirty.

"This wedding is an incredibly big deal," Vittorio said, his voice smooth, polished, and yet dripping with a condescending tone. "It’s highly important that we all look presentable to the guests. We have a reputation to uphold now."

I pressed my lips into a tight line, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction, though my heart was hammering against my ribs. My mother refused to acknowledge the unsettling way he looked at me, completely blinded by his wealth and the grand life he promised. Feeling entirely like an afterthought, a ghost in my own mother's glittering new life, I couldn't take it anymore. The air in the room felt thick, choked with expensive perfume and fake smiles.

Without saying a word, I slipped away to the dressing room. I peeled off the suffocating blue dress, letting it pool on the floor, and quickly changed back into my worn jeans and black blouse. Dragging my sneakers on, I grabbed my bag and left the boutique into the cool evening air, completely unnoticed by either of them.

The quiet, bumpy bus ride back to my apartment was a welcome relief from the suffocating atmosphere of the boutique. I leaned my forehead against the cool glass of the window, watching the city lights blur, my mind repeatedly settling on my brief, intense encounter with Lorenzo Marchesi.

"Your stepuncle," he had introduced himself, his dangerous, captivating smirk flashing in my memory. He was Vittorio's stepbrother, which made him my stepuncle, but there was absolutely nothing familial about the way he had looked at me. The lingering memory of his intense gaze sent an unsettling shiver through me.

Once I was safely back in the sanctuary of my small, quiet apartment, the tension in my shoulders finally began to ease. I kicked off my shoes, letting the silence of the space wash over me. But the quiet only gave my thoughts more room to run wild, and my curiosity finally got the better of me.

I sat at my desk, opened my laptop, and typed the words "Marchesi syndicate" into the search bar, my heart beating a little faster.

The search results immediately flooded the screen. The headlines detailed a massive, multi-billion-dollar empire of exclusive, high-end nightclubs, luxury hotels, and five-star restaurants run by the mysterious Marchesi brothers. But as I scrolled through the articles, clicking on a photo of Lorenzo, I gasped.

The camera had captured his chiseled jawline, his sharp nose, and those piercing, dangerous eyes. A sudden chill ran straight down my spine, freezing the breath in my throat. The articles briefly mentioned that the empire was run by triplet brothers, yet there were no other names, no other photos, and absolutely no public information regarding the other two brothers, as if they didn't even exist in the real world.

At the very bottom of one investigative page, a brief, hushed mention linked the Marchesi syndicate to powerful, dangerous underground dealings and organized crime.

My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. *What on earth have I gotten myself into?*

I closed the laptop with a sharp snap, rubbing my throbbing temples. Caught between a stepfather I deeply untrusted and an enigmatic stepuncle shrouded in dark, dangerous secrets, I felt utterly overwhelmed and suffocated.

To soothe my racing mind, I forced myself to think about my veterinary clinic. I needed something real, something safe and grounded in reality to pull me away from the edge of panic. I missed my work, and I missed the simple, uncomplicated gratitude of the animals. I missed my cheerful assistant, Sloane, who always knew how to make me laugh even on the busiest days.

I thought about the adorable golden retriever puppies I had helped deliver just last week, remembering their tiny, warm bodies, soft paws, and the soft whimpers they made as they reached out for their mother's milk. I even thought of Oliver, the notoriously grumpy orange tabby cat who had finally warmed up to me after months of patient treatment on his injured leg. He had finally let me pet his soft ears without trying to hiss or scratch my hand off, a tiny victory that had made my entire week.

Tomorrow, I resolved, I would bury myself completely in my work. I would focus on the animals, throw myself into their care, and forget all about the Marchesis and the dangerous secrets they held. I would build a high, impenetrable wall between my real life and the dark, glittering trap Vittorio was pulling my mother into.

Yet, as I finally slipped under my covers and let exhaustion take over, the darkness of my room offered no escape. The cool pillow against my cheek did nothing to soothe the burning heat under my skin. Lorenzo’s teasing smirk and intense, dark hazel eyes continued to flicker vividly behind my closed eyelids, burning bright against the shadows. No matter how hard I tried to deny it, I couldn't shake the terrifying feeling that this was only the very beginning of something I couldn't escape.
