Mystery Man

Sienna's POV

The bridal boutique was massive, elegant, and entirely intimidating. It was the sort of wildly expensive establishment that required an appointment made six months in advance, featuring towering crystal chandeliers and walls lined with gilded, floor-to-ceiling mirrors. It smelled heavily of fresh-cut white lilies and an expensive, suffocatingly powdery perfume. It was a cloying, heavy scent that immediately made my nose itch the second I stepped through the glass doors.

Despite the beautiful, pristine surroundings, I felt like a total outsider. I felt like an ugly, dark stain on a perfectly white canvas. I was dressed in my usual, unassuming uniform consisting of a plain black blouse and dark denim jeans. I stood awkwardly near the grand entrance with my arms crossed tightly over my chest, doing everything in my power to take up as little space as possible. I felt incredibly out of place amidst the dazzling, endless sea of white lace, silk, and tulle that surrounded me. I hated being dragged out here. I hated weddings, I hated the performative joy of it all, and most of all, I hated pretending to care about a union that felt entirely wrong and deeply unsettling to my core.

"Sienna! Come over here and help me pick one!"

Camilla’s sweet, excited voice rang out from the center of the sprawling room, cutting through the quiet hum of the boutique. I let out a slow, measured breath and turned toward her. She was currently spinning slowly on a circular wooden podium, draped in a magnificent light blue gown that flowed around her legs like water with every movement she made. She looked absolutely breathtaking. She looked every bit the perfect, elegant contessa she was destined to be. Her golden hair caught the soft lighting of the boutique, and her smile was wide and genuine.

Our mother stood right beside the wooden podium, practically glowing with overwhelming maternal pride. Her hands were clasped tightly together over her chest, and her eyes were shining with unshed tears. "Oh, Camilla," she gushed loudly, her voice trembling with emotion. "You look absolutely breathtaking. Radiant. Just like a true contessa."

When Camilla finally stopped spinning, she turned her bright gaze toward me. Her eyes were searching for my approval, waiting for my validation. I swallowed the thick knot of bitterness in my throat and forced a polite, entirely empty smile onto my face.

"You look beautiful, Cami," I said, keeping my tone as even and supportive as I could manage. "The color really suits you."

"You could at least sound like you actually mean it," our mother muttered under her breath.

Her voice was low, but in the quiet acoustics of the boutique, it was just loud enough for the words to reach my ears and sting. The sharp, unnecessary criticism hit me right in the chest. I clenched my fists deeply inside the pockets of my dark jeans, my fingernails biting hard into my palms. My jaw tightened so hard my teeth ached, but I kept quiet. I forced myself to swallow the angry retort burning on my tongue. I didn't want to start a massive scene in public, not when Camilla was looking so happy. Instead of fighting back, I simply wandered away from them. I walked over to a distant rack of gowns, letting my fingers lightly touch the delicate, scratchy lace of a nearby wedding dress. I stared blankly at the intricate floral patterns stitched into the fabric, wishing with every fiber of my being that I could simply dissolve into the background and disappear completely.

Suddenly, the delicate brass bell positioned over the boutique door chimed loudly.

My stomach immediately dropped into a freezing cold pit. I didn't even need to turn around to know who had just walked in. The heavy, confident sound of his expensive leather shoes clicking against the marble floor was a dead giveaway.

Vittorio Castiglione strolled into the shop, wearing a perfectly tailored dark suit and his signature, smug smirk. He carried himself like he owned the building, the street outside, and everyone breathing the air inside of it.

"Ladies," Vittorio greeted warmly, his voice smooth and practiced. He walked straight past where I stood in the aisles, making a direct line for my mother and sister. He offered them a charming, blinding smile that instantly made my skin crawl with unease. "I just had to come by and see how my beautiful future stepdaughter was doing."

My mother practically melted at his arrival, stepping forward to greet him with open arms, completely oblivious to the dark undercurrents that always seemed to follow the man. After exchanging a few minutes of hollow pleasantries and praises with them, Vittorio’s dark, calculating eyes finally flicked over to where I stood by the dress racks.

He left my mother's side and stepped closer to me. The moment he closed the distance, his physical presence became instantly suffocating. He smelled of rich cologne and stale cigar smoke, a combination that made my stomach churn.

"You’re awfully quiet today, Sienna," he murmured. His voice was low, dropping an octave, and dripping with a thick, mock concern that set off every alarm bell in my head. "Not excited about the wedding?"

"I just don’t like shopping," I replied coldly. I kept my chin leveled, forcing my facial expression to remain entirely neutral. I was absolutely refusing to give him the twisted satisfaction of seeing me ruffled or intimidated by his proximity.

Vittorio’s smug smirk only widened at my icy tone. He took another deliberate step forward, entirely invading my personal space. Before I could even register the movement and step back, his hand reached out. His fingers brushed slowly and intentionally against the skin of my bare arm.

"Shame," Vittorio whispered, his dark eyes deliberately dropping from my face and lingering heavily on my exposed collarbone. "A pretty girl like you should enjoy getting dressed up."

I yanked my arm away from him as if I had just been burned by hot grease. A violent, physical shiver of pure revulsion ran rapidly down my spine. The spot where his skin had touched mine felt contaminated.

"I’m going to get some air," I muttered sharply, my voice tight with panic and disgust. I didn't wait for him to respond. I bolted toward the front exit as fast as my legs could carry me, desperate to escape before anyone could stop me or ask questions.

I pushed through the heavy glass doors and burst out onto the sidewalk. The cold afternoon air hit my face instantly, shocking my senses and filling my lungs with a much-needed blast of oxygen. I rushed blindly down the busy sidewalk, trying to put as much distance between myself and Vittorio as possible. My mind was spinning so fast, replaying the disgusting feeling of his eyes on my collarbone, that I wasn't paying any attention to where I was going.

In my desperate haste, I collided straight into someone incredibly solid.

The harsh physical impact completely knocked the wind out of me. I let out a sharp gasp as I stumbled backward, my balance entirely lost. I braced myself for the hard concrete of the sidewalk, but before I could fall, strong, large hands instantly shot out and caught my arms in a firm, unyielding grip to steady me.

I blinked through my daze and looked up, my breath catching painfully in my throat.

The man holding me was incredibly tall, towering over me effortlessly. He possessed broad, imposing shoulders clad in a perfectly fitted dark jacket. He had thick, messy black hair that fell perfectly across his forehead, giving him an effortlessly rugged look. But it was his eyes that completely froze me in place. They were piercing, striking hazel eyes that seemed to dance with a bright, unapologetic amusement.

His lips curved into a lazy, crooked smile as he looked down at me, his strong hands still wrapped securely around my arms.

"You okay there, contessa?" his deep voice rumbled.

Heat rushed aggressively to my face in an intense, burning wave. My brain completely shut down under the weight of his intense, magnetic gaze. All the witty retorts and apologies I usually kept in my back pocket vanished into thin air, leaving me utterly speechless as I stared up at him.

He let out a low, rumbling chuckle. The sound vibrated pleasantly through the cold air between us. His grip on my arms lingered, warm and steady, lacking the gross invasion I had felt just moments before with Vittorio.

"You gonna keep staring, or should I be flattered?" he asked, his smirk tilting higher on one side.

The teasing tone finally snapped me out of my temporary paralysis. I stepped back quickly, pulling out of his grasp as the embarrassment made my cheeks burn even hotter.

"I... sorry," I stammered out clumsily, refusing to meet his direct gaze. "I wasn't looking where I was going."

"Well, as fun as this is, I should probably introduce myself," he said smoothly. He didn't seem the least bit bothered by the collision. His smirk widened slightly as he tilted his head to study my flustered expression. "Lorenzo. And you are?"

I hesitated for a brief second, intimidated by the sheer gravitational pull of his confidence. "...Sienna," I mumbled, my voice barely a whisper against the noise of the passing street traffic.

At the exact sound of my name, Lorenzo’s hazel eyes darkened slightly. The casual, playful expression he wore instantly shifted into something entirely unreadable. A sharp flash of deep recognition crossed his handsome features, as if he knew exactly who I was the second the syllables left my lips. The light amusement in his eyes completely vanished, rapidly turning into a deep, intense curiosity and a burning, predatory interest.

A low, smooth chuckle rumbled deep from his chest, sounding entirely different from the lighthearted laugh he had given me just a moment ago.

My stomach flipped in a strange, dizzying way that had absolutely nothing to do with fear. It was a jolt of sudden, electrical tension that rooted me to the spot. I quickly took another step back, snapping out of my brief, confusing trance as the loud chime of the boutique door swung open behind me.

The harsh, ugly reality of my life crashed violently back in at the exact sound of Vittorio’s scratchy, grating voice calling out for me from the doorway. My heart was suddenly racing wildly in my chest, beating a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I looked back up at the tall stranger standing in front of me on the sidewalk. Who the hell was this mysterious man, and why did his simple, steadying touch make it feel like the very ground had just shifted permanently beneath my feet?
